Sunday in Ordinary Time

Can you imagine opening your front door to find Jesus on the sidewalk, chatting with His disciples? So, if Jesus

were out front, would you have the forethought to invite Him in for dinner like Martha did? Would you worry

about the curtains? Or your dusty wood floors? Or the dog hair covering the pillows? It doesn’t seem that Martha

was too worried. She eagerly invited Jesus in and showed Him the kind of authentic hospitality that throws the

door wide and serves the best I have. Come to think of it, we can all learn a few things from Mary and Martha.

Talk about being put in your place! “Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.” Poor Mar-

tha. This begs the question from these words of Jesus, “What is the better part? What does the better part look

like, and what doesn’t it look like? What is the part that Jesus recognizes as being better for Mary rather than

what Martha is doing around the house?

It’s a somewhat funny, instructive contrast between the 2 sisters; one sitting at the feet of the Lord, looking up at

the face of Jesus. The other running circles around both Jesus and Mary. I’m sure we all know which one we

would prefer, knowing also there are times when being a little of both is a good balance in life and in our faith.

What is the better part?

First, the better part is possessing the virtue of prudence as part of our repertoire of virtues. Prudence being

good judgment as connected to our faith in Christ. What are the things we may say or do in a given situation, or

what do we avoid? Mary’s good judgment to sit down and spend time with the Lord by way of focusing her entire

attention on Jesus is a prudent decision at the time.

Spending no time in the presence of the Lord in prayer, or not having a prayer life, is unbalanced for any pro-

fessed Christian. There’s no feeding the spirit and soul. So when the soul becomes thirsty and hungry, it turns to

the world for answers rather than our faith.

Yours in prayer,

David Caraway

CHILD CHURCH is a religious program designed to instruct the very young (ages

3-6 years old) about Jesus and his teachings through Gospel stories, crafts and

songs. Classes are held during the 10 a.m. Mass in the St. Matthew & St. Mark

Rooms and usually begin in September and last until April. Snacks are provided.

Please check upcoming bulletins for a start date and a contact number if you are

interested in volunteering.

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD is a special program celebrated for the

children of our parish (usually ages 6 through 2

nd

grade) during 10 a.m. Sunday

Mass from September to May. Just before the First Reading at Mass, the cele-

brant calls for the children to gather together and dismisses them to a classroom in

the Fatima Building to hear God’s word in a simpler and more child-friendly and

focused way. Volunteers are always needed to help out. Please check upcoming bulletins to check on start

date and a contact number to volunteer.

The Substance Addiction Ministry meets on the 2nd and

4th Wednesday of every month at 7pm in the St. Matthew

Room.

SPECIAL EVENT BABYSITTING

We are looking to create a list of adults, 18 and older, to provide babysitting services during events at St. Charles Borro-

meo. Each event requires adults for babysitting, but teens are welcome to help as well. This is also a great opportunity for

them to get service hours. Adult babysitters will be reimbursed accordingly based on our attendance. Events may range

from one to several hours. Please contact Brandi Leblanc at (504)931-3306 if you would like to be added to our list of

babysitters. Interested adults need to be current on their Safe Environment Training.

RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY

Free Indeed Home is a safe house for young ladies aged 10 to 17 who have been rescued from

sex trafficking. Free Indeed Home provides housing, education, therapy, and most importantly, a

safe haven from the streets that victimized them at such a young age. The Respect Life Ministry

will be sponsoring a big box store (Walmart, Costco, Sam's, etc) gift card collection until July 31.

You can place a gift card in the collection basket or drop it off to the Parish Office. Please label it

Free Indeed Home. Thank You!

ST. CHARLES BORROMEO

The purpose of the Pastoral Council is to consult and to advise the Pastor in the development, coordination and oper-

ation of all the ministries of St. Charles Borromeo Parish and to aid the Pastor in implementing programs as he

deems necessary or appropriate in order to accomplish the mission of St. Charles Borromeo Parish Family.

Its duties are to promote, evangelize and provide services to bring the expression of the Catholic Faith to our commu-

nity at large. Other duties include the development and enhancement of the ministries of Spirituality, Community,

Education, and Administration so as to proclaim God’s Word, build up His Community, celebrate the liturgy, and

serve His People. Also to set goals and objectives that can be implemented by encouraging the use of gifts and tal-

ents of each member of our St. Charles Borromeo Parish Family.

The council membership consists of 10 lay members of the parish; all the parish ordained ministers: Fr. Mixie, Fr.

Jude & Deacons Harry, Mike and Jeff; the parish administrative assistant, Ronald Rodrigue, the school principal, Ra-

chel Hafford & youth director, Janeen Rodrigue. Current lay members of the council are Ryan Saucier, Donna Mah-

ler, Cliff Buller, Bob Oster, Lauren Bosco, Jane Chauvin, Raleigh Benoit Poche, David Caraway, Bill Bourgeois and

Bob Ory.

The lay members of the council are elected by the parish membership to serve a three- year term on a rotating basis.

This summer we will begin the process to elect three new members. If you have an interest in serving on the Pastoral

Council, we encourage you to speak to any of our current members. Applications to nominate yourself or someone

you believe appropriate are available in the church office or on the table at the rear of church. Nomination forms can

be returned to the church office or placed in the collection basket by July 31st.

In this world of turmoil, there is one sure way to combat evil that lurks all around

us—Prayer! The ironic aspect of evil is that you cannot truly recognize it unless you

constantly pray for the gift to see it. One of our important ministries of our parish,

The Monday Night Prayer Group, has been offering countless prayers for all of us

over the past 39 years. There comes a time in life when we must be responsible for

ourselves—that time is NOW! Everyone is cordially invited to attend our Prayer

Group each Monday at 7:30 p.m. “Be prepared for you know not when the master

is coming!” If you have any questions please call the Parish Office at (985) 764-

6383.

Black and Indian Mission Collection

This weekend, July 20-21, 2019, the Archdiocese of New Orleans will take up the annual Black and Indian Mission Col-

lection, which has a direct impact in our own archdiocese as we benefit locally from grants funded by the collection.

Your generosity to this collection reflects the depths of your faith and your willingness to help our brothers and sisters in

need; it is an opportunity to evangelize and further the missionary cause of bringing the Gospel to our African American

and Native American family.
