May 2019: Staying true to our MISSION to EMPOWER

EVERYBODY WITH LAW, we organised a Seminar to review the present Strata Laws. Graced by guest of honour, YBM Senator Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah bin Raja Ahmad (Deputy Minister of Housing&Local Government), the event brought together a number of seasoned speakers who exchanged views on reforms needed in the law. The Seminar was informative, engaging, timely and successfully attracted an eager crowd of building managers, property developers and owners of stratified homes.

March 2019: Following the success of

our inaugural Legal Clinic in Year 2018,

we decided to continue our legal aid

efforts by dedicating the entire

MONTH OF MARCH to similar cause

Apr 2019: Our MANAGING PARTNER, Dato’ Quek

Ngee Meng was one of the speakers during the prominent Summit which saw the attendance of senior politicians from various Asian countries, ambassadors to China, heads of well-known business associations and more than 400 enterprises from China and foreign countries.

BELT & ROAD GUIDE

ON MALAYSIAN INVESTMENT & TRADE LAW

May 2019: Under the guidance of Dato’ Quek who is also the

Head of the MCBC’s Legal & Tax Resource Centre, our Firm became one of the key voluntary contributors to the contents of the Belt & Road Guide. The Guide provides a COMPREHENSIVE RECORD on the policy and legal reforms made by the new Malaysian government, particularly in regard to investment and taxation.

THE MALAYSIA-CHINA BELT & ROAD ECONOMIC COOPERATION FORUM, Kuala Lumpur

Aug 2019: We were one of the co-organisers of this large-

scaled Forum, which brought together more than 500 government officials and delegates, business leaders and entrepreneurs from both Malaysia and China. A Panel Session by our firm during the Forum focused on addressing the growing need for ROBUST LEGAL & TAX COMPLIANCE, as well as strategic use of available mechanisms for dispute management in this era of BRI.

MCILAP: THE MALAYSIA-CHINA

INVESTMENT LEGAL ADVISORY PLATFORM

Jan 2019: Earlier this year, we formed

COLLABORATION with MCBC and the China Construction Bank (Malaysia) Berhad in introducing the MCILAP - a platform specifically designed with investors from China in mind to provide preliminary legal advisory and consultation services to customers of the Bank as well as investors from China in Malaysia.

ASIA ADR WEEK 2019: Carving a New Path towards Holistic Dispute Resolution

AiADR: THE ASIAN INSTITUTE OF

ALTERNATIVE DISPUTE RESOLUTION

Jul 2019: Endorsed by the Asian-African Legal

Consultative Organisation, the AiADR is the first non-profit, member-based institute in Asia dedicated towards promoting and converging global practices on alternative dispute resolution (ADR). As one of the pioneer, CORPORATE MEMBERS of the Institute, Halim Hong & Quek is proud to share its aims and contribute towards the future of ADR practice. During its inaugural Seminar on 25th Jul, Dato’ Quek Ngee Meng (Vice President of AiADR) shared that the Institute will leverage technology to provide flexibly structured courses that will be made accessible anywhere, at affordable fees and in multi-languages to neutrals (mediators, arbitrators, etc.) as well as, courses specifically designed to accredit in-house counsels and private practitioners.

THE INTERNATIONAL MEDIATION SUMMIT CHONGQING, CHINA

Oct 2019: The passing of the SINGAPORE

MEDIATION CONVENTION this year brought about a renewed momentum in the use of mediation as a dispute resolution mechanism in cross border disputes. To further deepen cooperation amongst nations in the use of mediation within the context of BRI, the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) and Chongqing Municipal Government hosted the International Mediation Summit on 16-18 Oct, to which our Dato’ Quek was invited as a representative of MCBC.

ADVISORY COMMITTEE OF THE IIDPS, BEIJING INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Nov 2019: Our Managing Partner, Dato’ Quek Ngee Meng was recently appointed as one of the FOREIGN EXPERTS on the esteemed Advisory Committee of the Institute of International Dispute Prevention and Settlement (IIDPS) of Beijing Institute of Technology. The appointment ceremony was held on 5th Nov in conjunction with the Second China International Import Expo Legal Forum which took place in Shanghai. The IIDPS is an institute committed towards serving the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) by providing think-tank support for national & international organisations in the field of prevention and settlement of commercial disputes, risk control and dispute settlements schemes. Appointment of Dato’ Quek on the Committee indeed serves as an encouragement to our firm’s BRI Team which handles cross-border matters relating to the BRI.

we were privileged to have shared our views on this topic

at various national & regional platforms this year … #ADR

June 2019: Speaking about holistic dispute resolution within the context of BRI during one of the Panel Sessions in this year’s Asia ADR Week, Dato’ Quek Ngee Meng emphasised the strength and practical benefits of the notion of DISPUTE PREVENTION, which is much aligned with Asian values of mutual cooperation.

Nov 2019: Our senior partners at a seminar entitled,

“Malaysia - Gateway to Explore International Market” in Tianjin, China. The event, co-organised by CCPIT TIANJIN & TRICOR RICHFUL DEYONG saw the attendance of more than 100 Chinese enterprises.

To address the growing foreign investments into Malaysia, we collaborated with several

prominent national & regional organisations to provide useful insights on the many legal

implications in the sphere of cross border trade to keen investors from China … #FDI
