F ontana is celebrating its centennial this month. And while I have only been alive for less than half of that time, I’ve witnessed a number of significant

changes in the city, none of them more profound than the shift in racial attitudes that permeated the culture of the area and people who live there. In my opinion, nothing represents that transformation more significantly than the election three years ago of Acquanetta Warren to the office of mayor. As a teenager, I remember my dad telling and retelling the story of the encounter he had with George Pepper, a Fontana resident and well-known member of the Ku Klux Klan. Growing up in the South, my dad was well versed in the habits and clandestine activities of that organization. He would tell us Klan stories, not so much as musings on his childhood, but as cautionary tales or parables. For me, the details of those stories faded soon after he told them. While I knew the landscape of his childhood town of Trenton, North Carolina because of our bi-annual pilgrimages there, the other elements – the unquestioned segregation and the ingrained racial prejudices - were foreign to me. I was a California girl born and raised in the land of sunshine far from the shadows of America’s racist past. Or so I thought. According to my dad, he agreed to meet Mr. Pepper one day at lunchtime at the diner on Sierra Way across the street from Kaiser Permanente where dad was employed in the Personnel Department. The meeting was to be non-combative - a “meet & greet” opportunity between two men with drastically different views on the future of the region and our country for that matter. Both men knew there would be no common ground, except perhaps in the mutual civility of the meeting. While I don’t remember all the details of the meeting, what I do remember is that during the conversation Mr. Pepper pointed out employees of the restaurant who were members of the Klan family. Women who worked as waitresses, women dad saw regularly and had no idea that they considered him inferior simply because of the color of his skin. I could tell by the way he told the story that he was shocked as well as appalled. For those of you new to the area, or too young to know the story, in the 1970’s the Klan was quite active in this blue-collar working class town. They regularly marched down Sierra Avenue fully robed, marched on City Hall, held organized meetings, and burned crosses during rallies held on Klan member’s property. Mr. Pepper, then Klan area director, even ran for Fontana mayor and city council. The city witnessed significant and positive growth during the decades between the highly visible and racially divisive days of the Klan and today. The population has grown into an ethnically diverse community of middle and working class families who share the same vision of a safe, healthy, and vibrant community in which to live, work & play. When Acquanetta Warren was elected mayor, the first African-American to serve in the city’s highest office, it was clear that the Fontana of today was not the Fontana of yesterday. Mayor Warren’s supporters were a coalition of progressive residents and stakeholders who believed in a racially, ethnically, and socially inclusive society and want their city’s leadership to reflect that vision. Congratulations Fontana on your 100th anniversary, you truly are an example of not simply a “city of action” but a city that has made tremendous progress as well.

R ecently the actions of Covered California caught my attention because of a press conference and

press release that came out on a late Friday evening just as everything closed down and citizens were focused on the Memorial Day Weekend. At the press conference, representatives from the organization presented the insurance companies that will be eligible to enroll 5.3 million people in California for health care under the national Affordable Health Care Act, of that number 100,000 are African-Americans. That number is currently in dispute.

The California plans selected are: Kaiser Permanente HMO Blue Shield EPO Anthem PPO Alameda Alliance for Health HMO Western Health Advantage HMO Chinese Community Plan HMO Health Net PPO Contra Health Services HMOVentura County Health Care Plan HMOLA Care HMO Molina Healthcare PPO Sharp Health Plan HMO

According to the Covered California website individuals or families will pay as little as $27 with subsides of up to $600 per month depending on the plan. The companies will have exclusive rights to provide health care services to these 5.3 million people. I did not see any African American providers on this list. I am assuming we have no medical providers as a group in California. If this is the case, Black physicians in private practice may become extinct and have to join one of these groups in order to stay gainfully employed. I also learned that this state agency would be awarding $37 million in community grants to 48 lead organizations for outreach and education. This is for the purpose of reaching people where they live, work, play and pray. These organizations must have a proven reputation of trust with uninsured individuals in the community. The California Black Health Network and California State NAACP with all of its branches were or have been selected for outreach and education services. The NAACP will cover 19 counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Fresno, Kern, Los Angeles, Madera, Merced, Monterey, Orange, Riverside, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San Joaquin,

San Mateo, Solano, Sonoma and Stanislaus with the Health Network also doing work in Los Angeles and San Diego. Some 20 grants will be specifically targeted to the Asian-Pacific Island communities with 37 outreach grants going to the Latino community. The White community will get 24 grants, 32 grants for African Americans, and 11 grants to reach the Middle Eastern community. The press release announced that Covered California is to pay $12 million to ad agency Weber Shandwick and Ogilvy Public Relations for media relations and community outreach work. They are to prepare creative ads to educate and inform all communities about Covered California. There were no Blacks, Latinos or Asians-owned ad agencies or public relations firms selected, which gives me cause for concern based on past practices for other outreach companies. California has a population of over 38 million with 39.7% being White, 38.1% Hispanic, 13.6% Asian and 6.6% African Americans. In my opinion, with these demographics and no agencies of color represented in the outreach and education process we will come up on the short end of the financial gains of Covered California. We must be granted contracts or subcontracts in order to reach our communities. Doing community outreach, especially for health care services to a diverse population, is something I have personal experience with. Back in 1970 Kaiser Permanente contracted with the federal government to provide prepaid health care services to 500 low-income families in a 7-mile radius of its Fontana Medical Center, known as the Comprehensive Health Care Services Program. We had to develop relationships and build trust between the community and the providers of care at Kaiser. This takes people with specific knowledge, credibility and a history of interacting with the target community over a period of time in order to make this program work. Some of Kaiser’s providers had preconceived ideas of the people that were now coming into its program, until they got to know the people. I am sure this will be no different, however it takes time and understanding outreach to make it happen. I want my community to know health care is big business and we need people to look like the people that are providing care too. We also need other contracts to be granted to Black, Latino, and Asian owned companies as well if we want this to be successful.

A key component of the AAOC annual program continues to be the cancer survivors’ panel that features the experiences of people who live with the diagnosis that most people fear. Sandra Williams, AAOC committee member, organized the panel and featured two women who are cancer survivors (including herself) and their spouses who are caregivers. The cancer journey is hard on the survivor, the caregiver, and on all who are close. The panel spoke openly of trials, struggles, and growth outcomes.

A ccording to a recently released U. S. Census Bureau report, roughly two in three eligible Blacks (66.2 percent) voted

in the 2012 presidential election, higher than the 64.1 percent of non-Hispanic Whites who did so. This marks the first time that Blacks have voted at a higher rate than Whites since the Census Bureau started publishing statistics on voting. In response to the news, Melanie L. Campbell, president and CEO of The National Coalition on Black Civic Participation and convener of Black Women's Roundtable said, “…it's a great day in America for Black People - especially Black women. It is extremely gratifying to see Census data that reinforces what we already knew: despite rigorous systematic efforts to suppress our vote, Blacks voted at higher rates than whites in 2012. A bill to secure $15 million in annual state funding for the UC Riverside School of Medicine was approved last week by

the State Assembly. Assembly Bill 27, authored by Assemblyman Jose Medina, D-Riverside, now goes to a Senate committee. "AB 27 will ensure Inland Empire residents receive access to affordable and basic health care," Medina said. "As chair of the Jobs, Economic Development and Economy Committee, I recognize the medical school will increase economic competitiveness and bring much-needed jobs to the region." The university's inaugural class of 50 medical students will begin courses this fall. More than 2,400 applied.

T he agency tasked with rolling out the Affordable Care Act in California recently unveiled the 13 health insurance plans

it will begin to offer in 2014. At a recent press conference, Covered California executive director Peter V. Lee called the plans, made up of large insurers and other well-known Medi-Cal and regional plans, “a home run for consumers in every region of California.” In total, 5.3 million California residents lack access to affordable healthcare. Covered California worked closely with researchers at UC Berkeley and UCLA to develop the California Simulation of Insurance Markets (CalSIM) report, a micro-simulation model that

estimates the effects of the Affordable Care Act on the enrollment of individuals in insurance coverage. The California-centric report has provided Covered California with eligibility and enrollment estimates by race, ethnicity, income, age, gender, region, English proficiency and current insurance status. The report shows that 2.6 million will qualify for subsidies and possible tax credits. The remaining 2.7 million may benefit from competitive pricing plans through the exchange. African-Americans make up 4 percent of the projected 2.6 million, which equates to 100,000 African Americans uninsured. “California should be proud of how not only health plans in this state, but the doctors,

medical groups and hospitals have stepped up,” said Lee. “Because of that, we will be able to deliver exceptional value, low rates and access to healthcare in every region of the state.” Riverside and San Bernardino counties Covered California providers include: Health Net HMO, Molina Healthcare, Blue Shield, Anthem HMO, Anthem PPO, and Kaiser Permanente. Starting this fall, individuals and families will be able to determine the exact amount they would pay, based on family size, age and income. Depending on those factors and taking region into account, plans may cost as little as $27 per month — with subsidies of up to $600 per month depending on the plan.

An Assembly analysis of Medina's bill noted that the preferred ratio of doctors to patients is 80 per 100,000 in any region. The Inland Empire has about 40 per 100,000. Much of the school's start-up funding has come from philanthropic and other sources. The Riverside County Board of Supervisors has committed $20 million since 2010. The UCR School of Medicine will be the first medical school established in the University of California system in more than 40 years. The school's 2013-14 academic year operating budget will be approximately $18 million, and by 2017-18, the budget will be closer to $50 million, campus officials told City News Service. The university is counting on federal research grant funding, philanthropic contributions and student tuition fees to make up the largest part of revenue.

M ost of us hold a special place in our heart for children. Even misanthropes cannot suppress a smile when exposed to the

innocence and honesty of a child. So then, how do we, as a society, allow children to be subjected to something as physically, mentally, and spiritually traumatic as juvenile solitary confinement? California’s juvenile detention centers routinely place youth in solitary confinement. It happens every day in both the state and county facilities. Juvenile Solitary Confinement amounts to total isolation. Youth receive no exposure to other people (except for brief moments with a staff), programming, school, exercise, sound, or voices–except perhaps for an anguished and tortured scream from somewhere down the hall. These deprived conditions occur hour-after-hour and day-after-day. We would not subject animals to these stark conditions, yet we use our tax dollars to allow it to happen to our children.

On many occasions, guards placed Destinni, an incarcerated youth, in solitary confinement for multiple days at a time without a cellmate or property of any kind, not even books or pictures. She was placed in “the camera room,” a 5-by-7 foot room containing only a cot, a sink, and a toilet, monitored by staff through a live video feed. From a remote area, male and female staff observed everything she did, even Destinni’s use of the toilet. What did she do to warrant this type of punishment? She failed to eat, tried harming herself by saving her medication and taking them

all at once, and cried uncontrollably. Solitary confinement only added to Destinni’s problems, because it made her extremely lonely. Yet, she was never given a mental health evaluation or seen by a therapist.

The name for Juvenile solitary confinement varies from county to county but includes monikers like secured housing unit, solitary, camera room, strip room, etc. Regardless of what they are called, these rooms operate the same way and unfortunately yield the same results: mental illness, trauma, suicide, self-harm, recidivism, and violence. In an age of evidence-based research and performance-based standards, why do we continue to subject our youth to something as ineffective and damaging as solitary confinement? Perhaps we defer too much to those who control juvenile detention facilities, the county probation chiefs and the Department of Juvenile Justice. However, they have security and fiscal interests that do not always comport with the health needs of the youth they oversee. In an effort to help keep juvenile facilities safe without compromising the physical and mental health of our children, we must pass legislation to reduce the use of juvenile solitary confinement.

Solitary confinement is exceedingly damaging to youth. 62% of the suicides committed in juvenile facilities are committed by children while in or shortly after leaving Solitary confinement. Senator Yee’s bill, SB 61, seeks to limit the use of juvenile solitary confinement. If passed, the legislation will take the first steps to define

juvenile solitary confinement and limit its misuse. The bill seeks to regulate the amount of time children may be held in solitary confinement and the reasons for which they may be placed in such conditions. The bill also prohibits youth from be placed in solitary unless they pose an immediate risk of harm to themselves or others and all other less restrictive measures have been taken. It also mandates that data are collected and reported to better understand the scope of this problematic practice. SB 61 falls short of eliminating the use of juvenile solitary confinement; however, it is a critical first step toward ending this inhumane practice that has been banned in almost every other country on the planet. Destinni is now serving a sentence of 25 years-to-life. One cannot help but wonder where she would have been were it not for her early experiences in solitary confinement. She could be my sister, my daughter, my friend, but instead she languishes in a place too far from home. At first she was a child, then we called her Juvenile, now what shall we call her?

Have we dehumanized our children to the point that this is tolerable?

The time is now to take action and protect our children from this oppressive practice. Support SB 61 by calling your State Senator and urging a yes vote.

“Daddy,” the boy said, “I don't want to disobey you, but I have made my pledge. If you try to keep me home, I will sneak off. If you think I deserve to be punished for that, I'll just have to take the punishment. For, you see, I'm not doing this only because I want to be free. I'm doing it also because I want freedom for you and Mama, and I want it to come before you die.”

This teenage boy overheard talking to his father by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was one of the hundreds of Birmingham children and youths who fifty years ago decided to stand up for freedom. They stood up to fire hoses and police dogs and went to jail by the hundreds and finally broke the back of Jim Crow in that city known as “Bombingham.” On this fiftieth anniversary of the Birmingham Children’s Crusade it is a time to remember, honor, and follow the example of the children who were frontline soldiers and transforming catalysts in America’s greatest moral movement of the twentieth century – the movement for civil rights and equal justice.

The Children’s Crusade happened at a critical time in the civil rights struggle in Birmingham. In April 1963 the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, together with the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights and its fearless leader Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth, had started a direct action desegregation campaign in the city. There were mass meetings, lunch counter sit-ins, nonviolent marches, and boycotts of Birmingham’s segregated stores during the busy Easter shopping season. Dr. King became one of several hundred people arrested in the first weeks of the campaign when he was jailed for violating an anti-protest injunction on April 12, Good Friday. Four days later he wrote his “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.” As the days went on with little response from city leaders, a new tactic was raised: including more children and youths.

Children didn’t face some of the risks adults might including losing breadwinning jobs, and college students (I had the privilege to be among them) had already proven to be extremely effective activists in cities across the South in

But once it became clear that many of the children volunteering for meetings and training sessions in Birmingham were high school students and some even younger, concern was raised about whether allowing and encouraging these children to protest was too dangerous.

The children’s response “exceeded our fondest dreams.” James Bevel, Andrew Young, Bernard Lee, and Dorothy Cotton helped identify and train the students. For the children May 2 was “D-Day.” Black disc jockeys were key allies in encouraging and deploying their listeners. Class presidents, star athletes, and prom queens from local high schools led the way as hundreds of children skipped class, gathered at the 16th Street Baptist Church, and marched into downtown Birmingham in groups of fifty, organized into lines two by two and singing freedom songs. More than a thousand students marched the first day, and many hundreds were arrested. Segregationist police commissioner Bull Connor’s overwhelmed force started using school buses to take the children to jail. But that first wave of children was only the beginning. When hundreds more returned the next day, Bull Connor directed the police and fire department to begin using force on the child marchers. The decision surprised even those used to his meanness and brutality but it was not enough to stop the determined young marchers. The searing heartbreaking pictures of children being battered and tossed about by powerful fire hoses and attacked by police dogs appeared on front pages around the country and world and helped turned the tide of public opinion in support of Dr. King’s local and the national civil rights movement’s fight for justice.

The same example that buoyed Dr. King should inspire us today. Under Obamacare, children may now remain under their parents insurance through their 26th birthday. This new provision is changing lives for Californians like Stella Brown. Brown, who has been on her mother’s insurance plan “for as long as I can remember,” was diagnosed with pre-hypertension three years ago and has been taking medications to treat it. When she moved to Chicago two years ago to attend law school, she found out that she could stay on her mother’s insurance plan — on the “Away From Home” plan created by Obamacare. Northwestern University, the school Stella is attending, requires all its students to have health insurance, with students having the option of being on a school-provided plan or buying their own insurance with financial aid from the school. For Brown, being on her mother’s health care insurance plan and not her school’s has greatly lessened the debt she will be carrying when she graduates next year. A survey by the Commonwealth Fund, a leading source of healthcare research, shows that 13.7 million young adults between 19 and 25 stayed on or joined their parents’ health plans in the 12 months ending November 2011. This included 6.6 million who likely would not have been able to do so prior to the passage of Obamacare. From Citrus & Hogs to Industrial Town

F ounded in 1913 by Azariel Blanchard Miller (A.B Miller), the City of Fontana developed as an agricultural center producing citrus orchards, vineyards, and chicken ranches. At one time the

city was the leading producer of grapefruit in the United States. Citrus wasn’t the only thing that Fontana was known for. Becoming an industrial town in 1942, the Kaiser Steel Plant supplied steel and iron for seven Kaiser Shipyards located along the West Coast.

The festivities included a 3-day carnival, the 58th annual Fontana Days Run and Fitness Expo, and a Centennial Parade with Fontana native, international rock and roll entrepreneur Sammy Hagar, who served as Honorary Grand Marshal.

The city’s present population is now estimated to have reached 196,069. It is the home of the Auto Club Speedway of Southern California a major NASCAR track, operates over 13 community centers, maintains over 40 parks, sports facilities and its 44 schools from 5 school districts serving students from preschool through adult in a diverse urban/suburban environment.

From Steel to Health care City After its founding the town grew into a significant city of agriculture. At one time it was covered in orange orchards, grape vineyards, poultry plants, and hog ranches. That was until Henry J. Kaiser arrived. In 1942, Henry J. Kaiser built a Steel Mill in Fontana, during the middle of World War II when steel materials were especially needed. This steel plant produced steel that would later be

manufactured into ships, cars, planes and other goods. This was one of the biggest steel mills in the United States at the time, and it was the only steel mill west of the Mississippi River. Many workers were needed to fulfill the large demand for steel back in the 1940s. At the time, there weren’t many houses built in Fontana. Most people lived in “temporary homes” that were old chicken coops which were converted into small houses. These were used until the area around the steel mill was more fully developed and houses were later constructed. As production was continuing, the need for a stronger community became evident and eventually Kaiser provided a hospital near the mill in 1943 that served workers and their families only. Over time the community was getting even larger and needed a bigger hospital. Kaiser then built an even bigger hospital on Sierra Avenue in

Originally Fontana Drag City, then Mickey Thompson International Drag Way, from 1955 until 1972, Fontana was home to the famous drag racing strip that was a significant venue in the NHRA circuit. It was the first SoCal strip to have lights and run night drags.

Building on the region’s history of racing and located in an unincorporated part of Fontana, on Cherry Avenue, the California Speedway was built on the former site of the Kaiser Steel mill, after the mill was closed in the early 1980s and the land was sold to Penske Motorsports.

Now known as the Auto Club Speedway, it is Fontana’s largest economic engine. Located just outside the city limits, with a grandstand that seats over 92,000 spectators, the speedway plays host to a number of races each year, the most widely watched is the NASCAR Sprint Cup.

Fontana’s Car Heritage

1954; the hospital would eventually become known as Kaiser Permanente, which still serves the community to this day. Earlier this year, Kaiser Permanente celebrated their 70th Anniversary with the opening of a new state-of-the- art hospital with more than 490,000 square feet and 319 hospital beds. Kaiser Permanente is now the largest health plan in the country. After the closure of the Kaiser Steel in 1984, the mill was eventually replaced by the Auto Club Speedway in 1997. The iconic steel mill tower can be seen near the track today. With the Speedway’s national stature, the site remains Fontana’s largest economic engine. Even after 100 years of growth, the city is still unified by a strong sense of community. That sense of community is what AB Miller saw, back in 1913, when he brought people to Fontana during Fontana Days to celebrate the first Fontana Days Festival, and what continues today in the diversity of its residents and vibrancy of its economy.

By the time Kaiser Steel closed its Fontana steel mills in 1980, it had left a lasting legacy, not simply in the foundations, structures, and infrastructure of much of the west but in the future of health care in the United States with the development of Kaiser Permanente, now the largest health plan in the country.

Founded by industrialist and shipbuilder Henry J. Kaiser to provide steel plate for the Pacific Coast shipbuilding industry, Kaiser Steel was noted for making the most of its costly steelmaking inputs, and it captured much of the Pacific Coast steel market by the late 1950s.

At Kaiser Shipyards in Richmond, California, Mr. Kaiser implemented the pioneering idea of Dr. Sydney Garfield, Kaiser Permanente HMO. By August 1944, almost all Richmond shipyard employees had joined Kaiser Permanente, the first voluntary group plan in the country to feature group medical practice, prepayment, and substantial medical facilities on such a large scale.

After the war ended, the Health Plan was expanded to include workers’ families. To serve employees at his diverse businesses, Kaiser opened Permanente facilities in Walnut Creek, California, in Hawaii, in Southern California, and eventually in many other locations. The HMO idea filled a big need, and decades later, Kaiser Permanente is still the country’s largest nonprofit HMO.

S heriff Stan Sniff recently appointed Captain Patricia Knudson to the rank of Chief Deputy. She is the only Latina to reach the executive rank in the

department’s 120-year history. She is currently serving as the commander of the Robert Presley Detention Center (RPDC). She will begin her new duties overseeing one of the patrol divisions officially in late July. Chief Deputy Knudson is a 24-year veteran of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. She began her law enforcement career at the Robert Presley Detention Center (RPDC). In 1993, Chief Deputy Knudson was transferred from Corrections to Patrol and was assigned to the former Riverside Station. Chief Deputy Knudson worked in patrol and community policing in the community of Highgrove. While assigned as the deputy for the Highgrove area community-oriented policing program, Chief Deputy Knudson fostered relationships between the community and the Department. In 1998, she was awarded the Sheriff's Department Meritorious Service Award for her work with that community-oriented policing program. In 1999, Chief Deputy Knudson was promoted to the rank of Investigator and assigned to the Administrative Investigations Unit (Internal Affairs). In 2000, she promoted to Sergeant and was assigned to the Robert Presley Detention Center (RPDC). Chief Deputy Knudson was then transferred to the Perris Station in 2003 where she served as a patrol Sergeant there for 2 years. In 2005, Chief Deputy Knudson was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the Southwest Detention Center (SWDC) before transferring to the Hemet Sheriff's Station. Chief Deputy Knudson served as the tribal liaison for the Soboba, Santa Rosa, Cahuilla and Ramona Tribes within the Hemet Sheriff's Station jurisdiction and was instrumental in forming cohesive relationships with these tribes. In 2009, Chief Deputy Knudson was promoted to Captain by Sheriff Sniff and oversaw the department's Internal Affairs Unit (IAU). In 2011, she was transferred to command the Robert Presley Detention Center (RPDC) in downtown Riverside where she has served since. Chief Deputy Knudson is active in her

community, volunteering with God's Kitchen, a local nonprofit organization feeding those in need. Chief Deputy Knudson serves as the Board Secretary for the Riverside Area Rape Crisis Center and serves each year on their committee for the Annual Auction Gala. Chief Deputy Knudson founded "Life Path Vision", a youth mentoring group that currently works with the Riverside Police Foundation's "Opportunity with Education". Chief Deputy Knudson firmly believes that it is everyone's responsibility to mentor youth to be successful adults. As well as these organizations, Chief Deputy Knudson is a member of the Inland Empire Hispanic Leadership Council (IEHLC). In 2011 and 2012, she was nominated as Woman of the Year for the 1st Supervisorial District for the Riverside County Commission for Women. Chief Deputy Knudson is also a past Vice-President of Education for Toastmasters

International in Riverside. Chief Deputy Knudson is a graduate of the 2005 Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute (SLI). She obtained a B.A. in 2007 from California Baptist University. Chief Deputy Knudson was born in Los Angeles as Patricia Ortiz, and raised in the city of La Puente. She and her husband, David, reside in the city of Riverside. Chief Deputies in the Riverside County Sheriff's Department are at-will employees of the Sheriff and oversee various divisions within that agency (patrol, courts, coroner, administrative functions, and corrections). Their primary responsibility is to oversee personnel matters, personnel investigations and disciplines up to and including terminations, tactical issues, promotions and transfers, and arbitrations. Their typical spans of control range from 300 personnel to over a 1,000 depending on the assignment.

Abeinsa EPC, the constructor for the Mojave Solar Project is seeking qualified and certified

diverse firms (minority, woman, disabled veteran-owned, and disadvantaged small businesses) interested in submitting bids for ongoing construction service and product

needs.

Being constructed by Abeinsa EPC, the Mojave Solar Project is a solar thermal power facility on 1,755 acres of land near the city of Hinkley, CA in the Mojave Desert. The project

is being constructed for Abengoa Solar, a global leader in planning and designing high-capacity solar energy facilities for municipal

and private energy service providers. The 250 MW plant should complete construction

in 2014. The facility will generate steam in solar steam generators, which will expand

through a steam turbine generator to produce electrical power from twin, independently

operable solar fields, each supplying 125-MW (net) power islands. Once operational the

plant will generate enough power for more than 88,000 households and will prevent the

emission of over 350,000 metric tons of CO2 a year.

Bishop Craig W. Johnson, Cathedral of Praise International MinistriesAs told to Natasha Simone FergusonA purple and white banner declaring, Decade of Destiny 2003-2013, is proudly displayed on the wall behind the pulpit as the congregation — a blend of both young and old — praises and worships God collectively. With authority and conviction, this spirit-filled church’s anointed leader Bishop Craig Johnson preaches his message on this first Sunday of June entitled, “A Blessed Life” as his congregation listens intently to his spirited sermon. Bishop Johnson is senior pastor of Cathedral of Praise International Ministries (COPIM) a ministry that started in Rubidoux over 18 years ago and relocated to a larger facility in Rialto in 2003. Now they are preparing to expand again and move the facility to North San Bernardino. The CallI was attending a Thanksgiving conference in Ventura, CA in 1976 when I first felt the calling to ministry. While sitting in a church service, I felt God was telling me, “You ought to be preaching.” For many years I had the actual notes where I wrote that down. Upon my return, I was met at the front door by my mother, who asked what occurred on that specific day – at that specific time. When I shared that I felt a calling to preach, my mother blew a sigh of relief and stated, “Oh, God told me when I was pregnant with you that you would be a preacher.” After discussions with my Pastor at the time, I preached my first message and was licensed in ministry on January 8, 1977. The VisionThe vision for COPIM came while praying in church at the age of seventeen. In the vision, I saw myself in miniature form standing before thousands of people of diverse races. The Spirit was very active in the service and everyone was worshipping in their own way. At COPIM, I attempt to make our services open and comfortable for any race of people. Our focus is to attract true worshippers. The Full Gospel Baptist Church is a fellowship of churches and COPIM continues to be a Nondenominational Church, but have been a part of the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship since 1998. Bishop Paul S. Morton serves as my Apostolic covering and a mentor in

ministry. Enlarging Church BordersCOPIM started in Bloomington eighteen years ago and moved to West Riverside shortly thereafter. We outgrew our Jurupa Campus in 1998, and finally settled in Rialto in 2003. After attempting for ten years to purchase the mall where we are presently located, God opened up an AWESOME opportunity in North San Bernardino. We are in the final stages of purchasing a building consistent with our original plans for Rialto. We will maintain our present sanctuary seating capacity while gaining 14 classrooms, a bookstore, café, commercial kitchen, and fellowship areas. Our plans are to upgrade and beautify the facility over the summer with our Opening and Dedication Service scheduled for the first weekend in October. It is our plan to immediately begin a 5 Year Strategic Plan of purchasing properties and lots surrounding our new campus. We have plans for a Transitional Living Center (to assist the homeless and former foster youth), a Community Development Center (to address community needs and issues), a Senior Citizens Complex, and to build a 5,000 seat sanctuary. It is our belief that this will be the final move for COPIM. PastimesPeople think I’m joking when I tell them that my hobbies are “peace & quiet”. Compared to others, I probably live a boring life. I love to read and to dine at fine restaurants. I also play Madden Football on Play station at least once a week. It sounds funny, but it keeps me sane. Today’s Church & Modern TechnologiesI recently stated during a message that, “we cannot do ministry in 2013 the way they did it in 1973.” That said, modern technology has a place in modern ministry. However, UStream is NOT intended to replace gathering for worship. Virtual Worship is offered for those who are unable to attend due to employment, ailment, travels, or remote locations. I encourage the members of COPIM to make church attendance a priority. We are currently on KPRO – 1570 AM every Sunday night at 8 p.m. and every Saturday morning at 8 a.m. Our UStream services are live every Sunday morning at 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. Previous services can be watched on demand.
