CF Case: N’dumberi
Dairy Supply Chain Management, Electronic receipting and traceability
Farmers registered on the system can receive valuable information
and communication from the dairy and providing support services is
easier.
Capture daily milk deliveries by 2 000 farmers at 15 collection points
Daily delivery SMS notification to farmers indicating the total
delivered for that day and the cumulative for the month
Android application used by Store Clerks to check credit worthiness
of a farmer and order products the farmer wants to buy on credit.
Bulk messaging to groups of users, including groups of farmers
belonging to sub routes of the collection point routes.
Farmers get daily updates on delivery volumes and can handle
wrongdoing or mistakes immediately - builds trust between Dairy and
farmers. (The farmer seldom deliver the milk personally)
By marking the milk cans and recording this, quality of milk and
problem can be traced back to the specific collection point. The milk
grader should do a quick QC test for each delivery.

months of May to Sept - all in cash at buying centres in
rural areas within walking distance of SHF's.
• First phase with 1 500 coffee and cocoa farmers, to
scale to 30,000 (incl. cotton) : • Good agronomic practice content via text message
• Notifications about upcoming training sessions and events
• Real-time information about changes in market prices
• The introduction of mobile money transfer using Vodafone’s M-Pesa
service in place of cash from December 2014 onwards, giving

• Primary objective is to improve the inputs delivery systems in Kenya to reach more smallholder
farmers efficiently and effectively.
• Register and "vet" 1.2 m SHF in 2015 across coffee, tea, sugar, food crops sectors in Kenya; to be
scaled up to ~3.5m farmers in the next 3 years.
• Farmers qualify for subsidy based on business rules e.g. size of crop land, budget available per
fertilizer type, area of farm, recommended amount of fertilizer per hectare etc.
• The farmers who qualify will then get a voucher via SMS to buy fertilizer from accredited stores at a
discounted price
• Farmer pays Agro dealer for fertilizer using C2B M-Pesa and Agro dealer gets the subsidized
amount from MoALF.
• Communication to farmers of GAP guidelines and best practice for fertilizer application.
