Linda Brown1950, Linda Brown was a third grader living in Topeka, Kansas. Because she was African American, Linda Brown was forced to walk a long distance to catch a bus that took her to a school even farther away. She was not allowed to attend the elementary school that was only a few blocks from her home. Only white children could attend that school. African American children around the country had to attend different schools from white children. Separating students because of their race is a form of segregation. Segregation is the separation of people based on race or religion.

Brown v. Board of Education
Thurgood Marshall presented the case before the United States Supreme Court. The decision in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas called for an end to school segregation. The Supreme Court reached its decision on May 17, 1954. Chief Justice Earl Warren stated in the reading of the Supreme Court's decision that "in the field of public education . . . 'separate but equal' has no place." Not every state followed that order right away. In time, however, segregation in schools came to an end.
