Sometimes we played tricks on each other in the cabin. One time while I was in the shower, my friends took all my clothes. Another time, I put toothpaste on my friend’s hand while he was asleep. Then I tickled his face with a feather. When he scratched his face,
he got toothpaste all over.
The night before I left for camp, I packed my
backpack. I packed clothes, pijamas and a bathing suit. I packed
soap, a toothbrush and toothpaste.
My father surprised me with new hiking boots
to wear at camp.
On the day I left for camp,my parents drove me to the bus stop. There were lots of other kids there. I found my group and my group
leader, Jason. Jason was in charge of my group during the two weeks of camp. I waved goodbye
to my parents from the bus.
Last year, my parents said I was old enough to go to summer camp. It was the first time they let me go
away by myself. I was really excited to go to camp.
Once we got to camp, Jason showed us our cabin. We all ran to choose our bunk beds. I climbed up the ladder of the first bed I saw to get to the top bunk. I laid out my sleeping bag and put my clothes
away on the shelves.
Jason showed us around the camp. There were
twenty other cabins full of kids. There was a dining hall for breakfast, lunch and dinner. My favourite thing was the climbing
wall! I wanted to learn to climb right away!

Jack’s Summer Holidayby Rachel Weiss
8 Unit 1
Every day, I asked Jason about climbing. Finally the day came that Jason taught us how to
climb. I used my arms and legs to climb all the way to the top of the wall, Jason told me to sit back and
relax. He brought me down to the ground on the road really fast. It was almost like flying!
Every day at camp, we did different activities with Jason. He took us hiking in the mountains.
He showed us how to stay safe in the mountains. He also taught us about different
plants and animals. Sometimes I felt tired on the hikes, but I always finished.
We also learned how to canoe in the lake. Jason taught us how to paddle. When we got to the middle of the lake,
Jason told us to jump in the water. I had a lot of fun in the lake, but I still wanted
to learn how to climb.

PROJECT22 Summertime moments
Bring a picture to class of you doing an outdoor sport this summer and talk about it with your group. What is special about this picture? What sport were you doing? Where were you? Now, let’s build a magic cube.
Step 1Draw eight crosses of equal sizes on the cardboard and cut them out.
Step 3Now cut three squares of magnetic sheet for each cube (18 squares in total). These should be a little bit smaller than the sides of the cube, so that they fit inside.
Step 5Work with your group to put the cube together.
Step 7Explain your cube and share your summer experiences with your classmates.
Step 2Fold the eight crosses into cubes. Leave one side open to put the magnet inside.
Step 4Stick the magnetic squares inside the cubes. There are lines on the magnetic sheets. Try moving the squares around so that the lines are facing different ways to make sure that they don’t attract each other inside the cube.
Step 6Use the group’s photos to cover the sides of the cube. If you don’t have enough photos, you can cut out pictures of people doing outdoor sports to cover all the sides of the cube.
Materials: double cardboard, magnetic sheet and your photos
