CATEGORY 1
Nationalism
- The feeling of patriotism for your country
• The Olympics is seventy percent driven by nationalism.
Internationalism
- The connection and communication between nations throughout the world.
• Places in the world are becoming more and more alike because of Internationalism.
Humanitarianism
- What makes people different from the rest of the animal kingdom, an unrealistic care for each other.
• Some people believe strongly in humanitarianism while others prefer to live for themselves.
Multilateralism
- Including 3 or more countries
• Multilateralism has caused some globalization itself.
Supranationalism
- The concept of something being beyond one government, being controlled by a group of nations.
• Some territories were controlled under supranationalism.
Symbolism
- Representing something with symbols.
• Symbolism is everywhere in • the media.
Bilingualism- Knowing two languages fluently.
• Bilingualism is very useful and usually required in many countries.
Pluralism
- A coexisting of ideas.
• Imperialists usually don’t believe in pluralism.
Multiculturalism
- Having more than one culture
• Canada is a lot more multicultural than European countries.
Separatism- Separating from something, usually pertaining to a
church or to politics
• Separatism is cause by a huge clash of values.
Ultranationalism
- Nationalism to the extreme.
• Ultranationalism will cause some people to do pretty scary things that they think are right.

Nation- A large group of people the usually share a culture
and history and have a government of some sort.
• Gary was ashamed of his cannibalistic nation.
Nation-State
- A specific state (province, territory etc…) that is made of only one nation.
• Gary moved from his cannibalistic nation to a smaller, more peaceful neighboring nation-state. (not Quebec)
Identity
• Who you are, as an individual• Gary looked at his identity, was not content and
decided to change it.
Patriotic
• Being nationally loyal.• Gary was feeling particularlypatriotic about his new home.
That’s not Gary.
Non-nationalist
• Someone who feels no loyalty to their country• Gary could not understand the non-nationalists of his
nation-state, it was just so great.
National Interest
• To the advantage of one’s country.• Gary looked at every event to see if it had weight in
his nation-state’s national interest.
Foreign policy
• The policy of a nation when dealing with other nations.
• Gary wrote his nation-state’s foreign policy because they didn’t have one and he thought it would be important.
Quebecois
• The term for someone who is part of in Quebec.• Gary did not like the Quebecois, they spoke French
and French confused him.
Conscription• The act of making someone join the army.• Gary thought conscription was a weird idea for the
defense of his nation-state. Oh, and by the way, the name of his nation-state is now Goborinthia.
Self Determination• The trait of being able to make your own decisions
and act on them without the influence of others.• Gary had tons of self determination, that’s how he
became head of military defense for Goborinthia.
Successor state
• A state created when an old state was divided up.• Gary discovered Goborinthia was originally a
successor state after the Bikilafrita war.
Sovereignty
• A ruler with complete authority.• Gary was severely against Sovereignty because of his
terrible memories of King Quantaluwazaza(who was evil) of his old nation.
Self Government• A democracy, control of the government by the
people.• Gary liked the idea of self government because more
people would be happy if they had a say in politics.
Institutions
• An establishment dedicated to a certain cause.• Gary thought people from institutions were very
narrow minded.
Human rights
• Basic rights that need to be respected by other people if there is to be peace.
• Gary read the human rights and make the council of Goborinthia teach them to every citizen.
International law and agreements• Rules outside of a nation, of the world.• Gary wrote an international law and agreement that
would severely discourage cannibalism.
Land claims
• The declaration of control over a certain piece of land or water.
• Gary thought his government should give up some of their land claims to the people to gain trust.
First Nations treaties and the Indian Act
• Rules that separated the settlers and first nations (gave them reserves etc…).
• Gary heard about the first nations treaties and the Indian act up in Canada and he thought it was racist.
Peace making
• The process of bringing and introducing peace.• Gary decided to go into the business of peace making
because he thought it was more productive than militarism.
Peacekeeping
• The job of steadying and holding peace after bringing it.
• Gary went into the business of peacekeeping after he had brought peace to his old nation.
• Gary ended up:– becoming head peacemaker/keeper
on behalf of his nation-state Goborinthia, created a charter of equality for all, converted everyone in his previously cannibalistic nation to become vegetarian, tamed all the wild beasts with his amazing animal speaking powers and saving the world by inventing world peace.
… and that concludes the story of Gary.
