    1/ SCOPE

This specification applies to a Nickel-Cadmium cylindrical rechargeable single cell whichSAFT designate as VNT D. This cell belongs to the SAFT High temperature Ni-Cd cell seriesand has been designed for permanent charge applications at elevated temperature. TheVNT D is designed with a new positive electrode technology (plastic bonded electrode called

PNE) and with a standard negative electrode.

    2/ GENERAL ELECTRICAL CHARACTERISTICS

All the figures listed in the following tables are based on fresh single cells.Tests carried out in accordance with International standard document IEC 61951-1.

    6/CYCLELIFE

Cycle Life duration of a VNT D cell or battery pack depends mainly on the cell or batterypack temperature and overcharged capacity. Minimum life duration of a VNT D cell/battery is4 years with the average operating condition of:

    Temperature: up to+40 +/- 2C

Permanent Charge current: 200 mA constant current (C/20)

Discharge: 1-2 per month (at C rate. Maximum)) (1V/cell cut-off)

The VNT D cell is designed to comply with the normative permanent charge endurancetest described in the IEC 61951-1 standard. This performance is mandatory for use in Emergency Lighting Units to comply with the IEC60598 2.22.

    7/CELLANDBATTERYMANAGEMENT

    Overcharge :

Repeated overcharge out of the specification could lead to leakage and deterioration of thecell.

    Over discharge :

A deep discharge or over discharge can limit the cell performance so it is recommended toturn the switch off at the end of discharge and to avoid letting the cell or battery packconnected to the equipment (luminaire). In addition, during the beginning of the first charge following over discharge, the voltage canexceed the maximum allowed value.

    Storage :

    Normal conditions:

SAFT recommends storing the cell or battery pack disconnected from the equipment within atemperature range of +5 to +25C in a 65 5% relative humidity atmosphere.

Long term storage (up 12 months):

Up to 12 months storage in open circuit at Room Temperature, there is no irreversible loss ofcapacity, up to 5 IEC cycles are allowed to recover the complete initial performance of aVNT D (see section 4).It is recommended to store the batteries cells in state of chargearound 50%.

    Service life :

When a cell or battery pack is used under normal conditions as described above, the VNT D

cell or battery pack will last 4 years. Failure in charging, discharging, storage or temperaturerange can reduce the service life and damage the cell performances.

    Battery assembly :

Consult SAFT for advice in battery assembly.
