1. PurposeThe Blue Medora VMware vRealize Operations (vROps) Management Pack for EMC VNX User Guide describes the primary features of the Management Pack for EMC VNX, including dashboards, views, reports, metrics, and alerts that allow users to optimize the monitoring of VNX File, VNX Block, or VNX Unified storage system resources from within vRealize Operations.

2. Introduction to the Management PackThe Management Pack for EMC VNX is an embedded adapter for vRealize Operations (vROps) that monitors EMC VNX storage systems remotely. The Management Pack retrieves data regarding resources by connecting to each supported EMC Storage device.

2.1 How the Management Pack Collects DataDuring each data collection cycle, the Management Pack opens a connection to the configured storage array and queries it to retrieve metrics regarding EMC VNX resources.

The collection interval for the adapter instance resource determines how often the Management Pack collects data. The default collection interval is five minutes.

The Management Pack supports Autodiscovery and manual discovery of resources. When you enable Autodiscovery for an adapter instance, the Management Pack creates resources in vRealize Operations and collects data after the main collection query runs. If a new resource belongs to a resource kind that does not exist in vROps, the Management Pack creates the resource kind.

2.2 Data the Management Pack CollectsThe Management Pack can collect performance data, relationships (associations), and events for the following EMC VNX resources:

2.3 Inventory Tree (Traversal Spec)The Inventory Tree (Traversal Spec) feature within vROps allows you to easily navigate your environment. The hierarchical structure implicitly shows relationships among resource kinds and enables quick drill-downs to root-cause issues. Figure 1 shows an example of a traversal spec for VNX File resources.

3. DashboardsDashboards are the primary user interface that allow users to monitor EMC VNX resources from within vRealize Operations.

3.1 EMC VNX File OverviewThe EMC VNX File Overview dashboard provides at-a-glance heatmaps depicting the overall health of your VNX File resources (file arrays, virtual data movers, NFS exports, file systems, etc.). Figure 2: EMC VNX File Overview Dashboard


3.2 EMC VNX File Health InvestigationThe EMC VNX File Health Investigation dashboard allows you to select an alert from the list of VNX File alerts, which then populates KPIs, health, and relationships information for the affected resource, as well as health information for its parent and child resources.

3.3 EMC VNX File IOPSThe EMC VNX File IOPS dashboard allows you to select a VMware virtual machine from the heatmap widget to populate its IOPS metrics. You can also select the VM’s related datastore and NFS export(s) to view KPIs for those resources.

3.4 EMC VNX File DetailsThe EMC VNX File Details dashboard allows you to select a VNX File resource from the Environment widget to populate its health, KPIs, metrics, relationships, and alerts.

Note for vROps 6.0.x users: The EMC VNX File Environment widget in this dashboard will show the error message “Widget is not configured” because EP Ops agents are not supported on vROps versions prior to 6.1. Because this widget makes use of these resource kinds, it will not function out-of-the-box.

3.5 Hosted on EMC VNX FileThe Hosted on EMC VNX File dashboard allows you to select a NFS Export and related operating systems, datastore, and virtual machines to populate each resource’s KPIs.

Note for vROps 6.0.x users: The Related Operating Systems widget in this dashboard will not show data, because EP Ops agents are not supported on vROps versions prior to 6.1. Because this widget makes use of these resource kinds, it will not function out-of-the-box.

3.6 EMC VNX Block OverviewThe EMC VNX Block Overview dashboard provides at-a-glance heatmaps depicting the overall health of your VNX Block resources (block arrays, LUNs, storage processor, storage pools, etc.).

3.7 EMC VNX Block Health InvestigationThe EMC VNX Block Health Investigation dashboard allows you to select an alert from the list of VNX Block alerts, which then populates KPIs, health, and relationships information for the affected resource, as well as health information for its parent and child resources.

3.8 EMC VNX Block IOPSThe EMC VNX Block IOPS dashboard allows you to select a VMware virtual machine from the heatmap widget to populate its IOPS metrics. You can also select the VM’s related datastore and LUN(s) to view KPIs for those resources.

3.9 EMC VNX Block DetailsThe EMC VNX Block Details dashboard allows you to select a VNX Block resource from the Environment widget to populate its health, KPIs, metrics, relationships, and alerts.

3.10 Hosted on EMC VNX BlockThe Hosted on EMC VNX Block dashboard allows you to select a virtual machine or operating system and related datastore and LUN to populate each resource’s KPIs.

4. ViewsThe Management Pack for EMC VNX creates views that allow the user to view statistics of metrics for various EMC VNX resources. The views help give a broad picture of the entire system, as opposed to a more in depth view.

To access the Management Pack views, go to Environment > All Objects > EMC VNX <File or Block> Adapter and double-click on the desired Object (resource). Select the Details tab, then Views. The available views for that resource are listed and can be selected.The views available in the Management Pack are:

5. ReportsThe vROps Management Pack for EMC VNX contains out-of-the-box reports, as listed in Table 1. Most reports contain one or more of the views listed in section “4. Views”. These reports can be exported and easily shared with key stakeholders in either .pdf or .csv formats.

To access the Management Pack reports, go to Environment > All Objects > EMC VNX <File or Block> Adapter and double-click on the desired Object (resource). Select the Reports tab, then Report Templates.

To run the selected report, click the Run Template icon ( ), then click Generated Reports, to select the report in your preferred format.


6. AlertsThe Management Pack pulls health status, notifications, and events from EMC VNX storage system resources and displays them in vRealize Operations as alerts. Refer to section “10. Appendix II: Alerts, Symptoms, & Recommendations” for the full list of alerts, symptoms, and recommendations.

7. Analysis BadgesUsing the predictive analytics capabilities of the vROps Analysis Badges through capacity definitions, the Management Pack for EMC VNX populates capacity and utilization breakdowns for several File and Block resource kinds. Refer to section. “11. Appendix III: Capacity Definitions” for the full list of resource kinds and capacity definitions.

8. Troubleshooting the Management PackKnown troubleshooting information can help you diagnose and correct common problems with the Management Pack for EMC VNX.

8.1 Troubleshooting an Adapter InstancePerform these general troubleshooting steps to diagnose and correct problems with an adapter instance:

• Edit the adapter instance and click Test Connection to verify the connection to vROps. Refer to section “8.2 Testing Connection Failures”.

• View the collection status and collection state for the adapter instance resource on the Environment Overview page in vROps.

• Check the adapter and collector logs for errors. Refer to section “8.3 Viewing System Log Files”, for details.

8.2 Testing Connection FailuresWhen clicking Test Connection in the Manage Solution window when adding an adapter instance, the following connection errors are possible.

File:Error: Unable to establish a valid connection to the target system. Cannot connect to Primary Control Station. Check hostname, username, and password.Action: Ensure the hostname, username, and password for the Primary Control Station are correct.

Error: Unable to establish a valid connection to the target system. Command not found, nas path may be incorrect.Action: Ensure the nas path is correct.

Block:Error: Unable to establish a valid connection to the target system. Connection failed. Returned: Could not connect to the specified host.Action: Ensure the hostname is correct.

Error: Unable to establish a valid connection to the target system. Connection failed. Returned: Cannot run Program.Action: Ensure the NaviSecCLI utility is installed and that the appropriate path was entered in the adapter configuration window. To manually verify that your connection information is correct and your system is accessible, run the following command from your command prompt:

Windows:C:\Program Files (x86)\EMC\Navisphere CLI\NaviSECCli.exe” -User <User Name> -Password <Password> -Scope 0 -h <hostname or IP address> lun -list -all

Error: Unable to establish a valid connection to the target system. Connection failed. Returned: Invalid scopeAction: Ensure a 0, 1, or 2 was entered in the adapter configuration window.

Error: Unable to establish a valid connection to the target system. User name, password and/or scope incorrect; User name, password and/or scope incorrectAction: Ensure the username and password are valid for the scope specified.

Error: “Library or configuration file for NaviSecCLI is missing or corrupt.”Action: In order to resolve this issue on Windows vROps boxes, complete the following steps.

NOTE: If this error occurs in Linux, you will probably have to su admin and run naviseccli security -certificate -cleanup.

1. Open a command prompt as the SYSTEM user. This can be done in a few ways: • Creating a service to open the command prompt interactively (deprecated, but functional as of Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2)

• sc create cmdsvc binpath= “cmd /K start” type= own type= interact • sc start cmdsvc

• psexec (http://ss64.com/nt/psexec.html) • remote.exe tool as part of the Windows Debugger (remote /c [host] SYSCMD)

2. Run the following command in the SYSTEM-user command prompt: NaviSECCli.exe security -certificate -cleanup.

3. Attempt Test Connection again in vROps. If it fails with the following error, try again: “Connection failed. Returned: Error occurred while trying to connect: ‘[host]’. Message : File does not match signature.”

After performing these steps, Test Connection should pass.

8.3 Viewing System Log FilesYou can view adapter errors in the adapter and collector log files. You can view the adapter and collector log files in the vROps user interface or in an external log viewer.

The adapter log files are in the $VCOPS_BASE/user/log/adapters/emcvnx<block or file>_adapter3/ folder. The collector log files are in the $VCOPS_BASE/user/log/ folder.The logging level is set to ERROR by default. To troubleshoot issues, set the logging level to INFO. To view detailed messages, including micro steps, queries, and returned results, set the logging level to DEBUG.You can set the base log level for the collector via Administrator > Support > Logs > Select COLLECTOR folder > Select Edit Properties icon > Edit Root logger level.

NOTE: If you set the logging level to DEBUG, log files can become large very quickly. Set the logging level to DEBUG only for short periods of time.
