Before: Network Fencing
Problem
Deploying VMs directly on the network does not provide isolation and will also result in MAC and IP address conflicts with their clones deployed on the same network
Solution
In fenced mode LM creates an additional host-only private LAN segment and subnet—a “fence” which prevents MAC and IP conflicts
Deploying in fenced mode optionally creates a virtual NAT/router that connects the private network to an external network to gain external connectivity
Configuration 2
A B C
Deploy the cloned configuration
“fenced”
Power on Virtual Machines
Connect to newly created virtual net
NAT/route the configuration
to external net

Use MAC and IP network
resources

Lab Manager 3: Single-host Fencing
Limited configuration size
Resource capacity of a single ESX host limits the size of a configuration that may be fenced
Single-host fenced deployment may not be possible
All datastores may not be accessible from all hosts
CPU affinity due to memory state in a heterogeneous ESX cluster may prevent configurations from being fenced
Cannot leverage VC services that require vMotion
Can’t VMotion a group of VMs together
Minimizes effective use of DRS for better resource utilization
HA (and other services) weakened
HA, maintenance mode, DPM: no way to disperse or restart fenced VMs

Host Spanning Private Networks
Host-Spanning Private Networks (HSPN)
A HSPN spans hosts and is represented as a portgroup on a DVS
Both “fenced physical” and “virtual networks” may be deployed on HSPN
Individual HSPNs isolated from each other and from the LAN segment itself
Connectivity to external network via the virtual router remains unchanged
Enabled with a “Service VM” on each host participating in HSPN
Deploy original
configuration unfenced
Power on Virtual Machines
Use MAC and IP network
resources
A B C
Configuration 1
A B CA B C
Deploy cloned configuration
cross-host fenced
VMs connect to cross-host
fenced network and may be
deployed on any host that the
fence spans. NAT/route the
configuration to external net.

Product Unification: What Are Workspaces?
Resource Abstraction
Workspaces can be backed by segregated resource pools
Move a configuration from “Dev” workspace to “Test” workspace → Change resources powering it
User Containers
Users in Orgs can be further sorted into Workspaces
For Example: “Lab Manager” Org can be broken down further into “Dev” and “QA” workspaces
Virtual Machine Containers
More on this in a bit…
Note: The “Admin” role can be assigned at Workspace or Organization level

IT Organization
Product Unification: Multiple Workspaces
The Power of Multiple
Workspaces
Workspaces are also containers
of virtual machines
Default Sharing Behavior
Private: Lab Manager-like
Shared: Stage Manager-like
Far more Flexible than Stage
Manager’s Service/Stage
linear model
One Production Workspace can
be in the same Org as many different
related “Dev” workspaces
With different users in each!
