IBM Software Support Statement for VMware

“Customers who are running the IBM software on VMware ESX Server must have an IBM VMware SupportLine agreement through IBM SupportLine or IBM equivalent and a current software maintenance agreement in order to receive support for the IBM software products in this environment. Individual IBM software may announce a level of customer support beyond that level described above. If applicable, information about the added level of support will be included within the specific product announcement letter.”

“The VMware software is designed to be transparent to the middleware and applications that operate above the VMware guest operating system. If an IBM software problem occurs only within a VMware ESX Server environment it will be considered a transparency problem and will be directed to VMware for resolution. IBM VMware SupportLine is available to provide assistance in working with the customer and the VMware business partner to resolve this type of problem.”

“Customer implementations that are not covered by an IBM VMware SupportLine agreement will be required to recreate the problem in a native environment (without VMware) in order to utilize software maintenance support services for the IBM software experiencing the problem.”

What Does This Support Statement Mean?

When a customer calls in with a standard usage/defect-related SWG IPLA middleware service request, and indicates that they are running on VMware ESX Server, we will make best efforts to resolve the issue. We will assume that the problem is common to both native and VMware environments, and we will only require the customer (or the VMware SupportLine team) to recreate the problem if there is an indication that the problem may be unique to the VMware environment.

What Does This Support Statement Mean?

This applies to service requests within scope for Passport Advantage support. If the question is about performance or scalability issues, the VMware SupportLine Team will make best efforts to determine if the problem is caused by the VMware environment. That determination will then guide the subsequent ownership for working the problem. This VMware support statement applies to any VMware ESX Server deployment, whether it is on xSeries servers or competitive Intel-based hardware (e.g. Dell). The VMware SupportLine offering covers all Intel-based hardware platforms running under Linux or Windows.

How Does VMware Fit in with Other IBM Virtualization Technologies?

Systems Edition layer tools in the model are provided by VMware ESX Server for xSeries and BladeCenter hardwareThe Storage Virtualization and Virtual Management and Access technologies work for VMware environments, tooIBM Virtual Machine Manager is an extension to IBM Director that allows it to manage virtual machines as well, plus connects it to VMware VirtualCenterThe benefits of using VMware ESX Server with IBM Software are the same ones one receives from Systems Edition tools on other (non-Intel) platformshttp://www.pc.ibm.com/ww/eserver/xseries/vmware.html

What Are the Benefits of Using IBM Software on VMware?

Allows multiple images with different OS to share hardware resources (Hypervisor)Allows separation of network infrastructure from images for ease of redeployment (VLAN)Allows dynamic reallocation and dedication of system resources to images (Virtual I/O)
