Diversity Today – Being More Inclusive TomorrowMauricio Velasquez, MBA, PresidentThe Diversity Training GroupHerndon, VA

The best medical practices understand and value the diversity of all their patients and

talented staff – are inclusive of difference. When “diversity issues” surface in employee relations issues or patient care issues, it can be costly – lawsuits, bad press, reputation of your practice can take a big hit.What is diversity, what does it mean to be inclusive will be presented. A framework for looking at these issues, a template for anticipating and being proactive around emerging diversity issues will be presented.This will be a highly interactive – participant centered workshop.

Toxic Employee – Toxic Workplaces: What You Don’t Know You Don’t KnowMauricio Velasquez, MBA, PresidentThe Diversity Training GroupHerndon, VA

We all have a toxic employee, a very negative employee who tries (intentionally or unintentionally) to recruit others to create a toxic workplace. What is a toxic employee and how to address them and their toxic behaviors before they “poison” the whole workplace will be presented and discussed.We will build a “skills kit” to minimize or neutralize these toxic issues. As an added bonus – how to deal with toxic family members will also be included. No really, same toxic behaviors – we do the same thing at home. We ignore the toxicity and hope it goes away by itself but it actually grows.

Navigating Virginia’s Fraud and Abuse LawsMichael Newby, DirectorHancock DanielGlen Allen, VA

While many physicians are generally aware of the federal Antikickback Statute, the False Claims Act and the Stark law, Virginia’s fraud and abuse laws

should not be overlooked. This session will review some of the more noteworthy fraud and abuse laws affecting physicians under Virginia law (e.g., Virginia Practitioner Self-Referral Act) and their interplay with federal fraud and abuse laws. We will also review some fraud and abuse enforcement activity involving physicians that has been in the news.

Getting Started with TelemedicineRob Warlick, Co-Founder & Managing DirectorSimpleVisit.comCrofton, MD

As healthcare continues to embrace the digital age, more and more clinicians are using telemedicine as a tactic to provide care in an

innovative way. This session will cover how your practice can successfully implement virtual visits, how to identify patients that would best benefit from telemedicine, understand billing and documentation requirements and acquire strategies for how clinicians can adjust their style of practice for delivering care virtually rather than in person.

Documentation Issues in The Era of EMR – What’s So Bad About Cutting and Pasting?Tanner PilcherTanner Pilcher Law PLLC Richmond, VA

The EMR can be an amazing tool that improves communication among providers, quality of care, and creates a comprehensive medical record. It can also create unforeseen headaches and unintended consequences if it is not used correctly. This talk will cover some of the basic tenets of documentation in the era of the EMR (hint – they are not so different from the “old” way) and how to help providers get it right. We will talk about the benefits and pitfalls of the EMR and have some fun looking at common and not-so-common mistakes using real life examples Ms. Pilcher has seen and understands how those mistakes can and are used against providers in professional licensing complaints and lawsuits.

Handling Professional Licensing Board ComplaintsTanner PilcherTanner Pilcher Law PLLC Richmond, VA

This session will cover the nuts and bolts of a professional licensing board complaint and why, no matter how tempted you may be to respond on your own, legal guidance is essential. We will go into detail about how to communicate with the Board and how to effectively use counsel throughout the process – from investigation through final determination.

The Risks of Distracted Practice: The Link Between Distraction and BurnoutShelley Rizzo, RN, MSN, CLNC, CPHRM, CPPSPatient Safety Risk ManagerThe Doctors CompanyColumbus, OH

This educational seminar will focus on two distinct but related topics that place patients, physicians and staff at risk: Distracted Practice and Provider Burnout. Distracted practice is now recognized as a significant threat to patient safety and provider well-being. While all healthcare distractions are of concern while providing patient care, distractions from medical technology and personal electronic devices have particularly severe patient safety and risk management consequences. Awareness of this serious problem and the risk mitigating steps to decrease distractions is critical. Sharing this information with physicians and all healthcare personnel is an important risk reduction strategy.Physician burnout is also becoming a major issue with practicing physicians. It also impacts all healthcare personnel. The literature is abundant from multiple resources. Experts are indicating that a tipping point is here, affecting care of patients, diagnosis issues and the well-being of physicians, as well as, other healthcare personnel. Awareness of this problem and review of steps to reduce burnout and enhance work-life balance should be shared.We will examine strategies to mitigate risk, enhance patient safety and to address provider well-being and work-life balance.

Burnout / Work-Life BalanceLynne Hughes, FounderComfort Zone CampRichmond, VA

This session will focus on what a life in and out of balance looks like, the “balance continuum” and strategies to avoid becoming burned out and address the unique

challenges that healthcare professionals face. The session will include interactive activities and provide resources and daily coping strategies.

• Understand what life in balance and out of balance looks like;

• Develop strategies for leading balanced life; • Identify symptoms and provide tools to help avoid

burnout.

Nate and Lucien will step into the real world during this hands-on workshop and share examples of how a local medical practice uses pivot tables to get what its PM/EHR cannot deliver. We request every attendee bring an electronic device, as we will provide a thumb drive containing de-identified practice data to each attendee. We want attendees to be able to build pivot tables by the end of this session and will share “step-by-step” how pivot tables can be built to track no shows, E&M coding, referring physicians and other valuable and actionable data. We will delve into the creation of dashboards and how they can be used to improve the performance of staff and the productivity of providers. Dashboard examples for better-performing practices across the country will be shared. Learning Objectives:

• Show real world examples of how pivot tables and dashboards have improved the performance and productivity of Lucien’s practice;

• Create your own pivot tables, using a de-identified data set provided to each attendee;• Compare examples of practice-changing dashboards for medical practices nationwide;• Appreciate the limitations of standard PM/EHR reporting.
