Editor’s Note

EXCELLENCE A CONTINUOUS PROCESS Academic excellence has been the routine affair in the annals of the

century-old Islamiah College. Our College is also the hub of skill

development and myriad of extension activities. A number of Society

linked programmes are conducted inside and outside the campus and the

students are actively involved. Two blood donation camps were

conducted in this year itself and nearly 250 units of blood were donated

to Government Hospital. Voters’ Awareness programme, tree plantation

drive, Science exhibition and numerous other useful activities are hosted

by our College units of Youth Red Cross, Rotaract Club, NSS and NCC. The

students are closely monitored by Mentoring system and the personal

and academic shortcomings of the students are readily addressed.

Periodical Parent-Teacher meetings and Alumni meetings are conducted

by the respective departments. Job oriented courses are conducted in the

College to which the leading industrialists and professionals are invited to

share their expertise and experiences with our students. National and

international Seminars in all disciplines are frequently conducted to give

the students exposure to the most recent developments in every field.

Sports activities galore in our College grounds and our students bring a lot

of laurels in inter-collegiate, inter divisional sports competitions. Nearly

1.70 crores have been sanctioned by UGC for developing sports activities

and infrastructure facilities during this period. In the back drop of our

extensive extension activities coupled with our customary academic

excellence we are all set to be adored by the star status by the

Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. Again and again we

prove that “Excellence is a continuous process and not an accident” as

quoted by our former President and great Scientist Dr. A. P. J. Abdul

Kalam.

Quality is the benchmark for the success and survival of any educational institution. Quality of learners depends on quality of teachers who play a vital role in character building of the students and the backbone of the entire education system. Of course, the newsletter is one of our modes that disseminate all the deeds of our staff and students within and outside the campus. This newsletter is a showcase of our academic, research and social activities that not only justify our reaccreditation with ‘A’ grade but also validate the grant of autonomy. Now, this is the time to spread our tentacles to grab the possible funds from all sources to sustain the quality of education. We will declare the forthcoming academic year as a “Year of Academic Review” and uphold the spirit of autonomy and accountability, which are the two sides of the same coin. I take this opportunity to call upon all our teaching and non-teaching staff to regroup to impress upon the members of the upcoming autonomy review committee.

The quality of education in higher learning institutions depends on the caliber and attitudes of students towards learning, the competence and commitment of teachers towards educational process, the flexibility and foresightedness of the governance system and the social responsibility and credibility of the education providers. The autonomy and accountability provides a better frame work for realization and fostering these parameters. No doubt, the 21st issue of this newsletter contains a speck of our growth towards the realization of these basic factors. I take this opportunity to appeal all the stakeholders of this institution especially the teachers and students to hold the reins tight as the visit of the Autonomy review committee is imminent. I also extend my wholehearted thanks to the generous Management for their unstinted support for achieving the spirit of autonomy. With many more facilities and infrastructure development are on the anvil, I strongly believe that our staff members will surely rise up to the occasions demanded by the time.

IC NEWSLETTER | DEC 2014 - MAY 2015 WHAT’S NEW Coaching Classes for CA - CPT to the Minority and Socially Backward Class Students Free Coaching Classes for Chartered Accountancy (CA) Course – Common Proficiency Test (CPT) is scheduled to be organized from July 2015 for Minority socially backward community students in association with MT Educare Ltd., Mumbai. Students will be given scholarships and study materials. Eminent Resource Persons from Mumbai and Bengaluru will engage the Classes.

Placement and Soft skills Training Programme by Mashal Trust Mashal Trust of Vaniyambadi is proposed to conduct free Placement and Soft skills training programme from July 2015. Experts from Chennai and Bengaluru will train the selected students and the entire programme is coordinated by the Placement Cell.

Innovative Students Club (“IGNITE”) An innovative students club (IGNITE) is renewed with new programme like debate, self training and learning, film making and photography etc., for the students and by the students. The activity will be started from the academic year 2015-16 onwards.

Launching of D-space – A revolution in the Digital Library D-space software installed in the digital library is to be launched during the year 2015-16. Which will help the readers to access the Rare books, Theses, Dissertations, Faculty publications etc., with downloading and uploading options from their desktops.

OMR based Objective Type Examinations Department of Examinations proposed to introduce OMR based objective type question papers for Environmental Studies and Value Education for all UG programme as a part of examination innovation during November-2015 / April-2016 sessions onwards.

New Courses Department of Biochemistry is proposed to introduce Ph.D programme during the academic year 2015-16. Department acquired large numbers of sophisticated instruments for this purpose and made exemplary publications in reputed national and international journals for the past few years.

Blood donation camp was organized by Youth Red Cross in association with the Government Hospital, Vaniyambadi. IC NEWSLETTER | DEC 2014 - MAY 2015 SPORTS 96th Sports Meet The 96th Sports Day was celebrated on 9th March 2015 at the College Ground when Mr. R Palani, Inspector of Police unfurled the Tricolour National Flag and Mr.S.Mugunthan, an alumnus of our College and a Silver Medalist in Athletics at All India Inter-University level, presently Superintendent, Central Exercise and Customs, Karnataka, lit up the Symbolic (Olympic) Torch. Other dignitaries seen in the dais are Mr. L. M. Muneer Ahmed, Secretary & Correspondent, Dr. K. Prem Nazeer, Principal, Mr. O. M. Javeed, EC member of VMES and the Physical director Mr. Mohideen. The relatives of Guinness book world record holder, Mr. M. Manjunathan is honoured for his achievement in his ‘Longest Journey by Motorcycle in a single country’ on this occasion.

Anuvigyan Week | 23 - 24 March 2015 Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India joined hands with Islamiah College to commemorate Anuvigyan week on 23 & 24 March 2015. The Regional Director of Atomic Mineral Division, Bangalore. Dr. A. L. Katti addressed and highlighted the importance of Atomic power and its uses. A Two-day Exhibition was also inaugurated on this occasion by Dr. M.A. Jayaraj, RJDCE, Vellore. Thousands of students from the neighboring Colleges and Schools visited the exhibition and attended and participated in the Quiz programme.
