museum en tevens de tentoonstelling te bekijken.Het museum en de tentoonstelling zijn toegankelijk na de entreeprijs van € 2,= pp;

Tsunami halts pirate attacksThe tsunami which devastated Indonesia's Aceh province on Sumatra island has halted deadly pirateattacks and kidnappings of seafarers in the busy adjoining Malacca Strait, an official said on Sunday.

"Since December 26 until today there is not a single pirate attack in the Malacca Strait," Noel Choong, regional manager of the Piracy Reporting Centre, told AFP.

The waterway bordered by Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia is used by about 50 000 ships a yearcarrying a third of world trade and half its oil supplies.

Choong said some pirates may have been killed by the tsunami or their boats and weapons could havebeen destroyed.

The presence of numerous warships in the region to aid survivors could also have deterred piratesbased on the Indonesian side of the strait. "The large presence of naval ships off Aceh may be adeterrent factor," he said.

But Choong said security forces from Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore must continue patrols in thestrait and remain vigilant despite the lull.

"It is just temporary. Once the pirates regroup and train new members, they will resume theiractivities. The money is too good to stop their criminal acts," he said.

Choong said he expected pirate attacks to start once reconstruction in Aceh was complete. "Once it isback to normal, and commerce resumes, pirates will again sail the high seas," he warned.

Thirty mariners were killed worldwide last year in pirate attacks including four in the Malacca Strait, thePiracy Reporting Centre - part of the International Maritime Bureau - said in its annual report.

Since late 2003, there had been a steady increase in attacks and kidnappings in the strait and alongthe coast of Aceh, where a separatist revolt is being waged.

CASUALTY REPORTCorrection

The hoto used yesterday of the GENMAR HOPE in this sectionwas made by TERJE MOEN.

Genmar ship 'hit' off EgyptGeneral Maritime's 150,000-dwt Genmar Kestrel (built 1989) has spilled about 6,000 barrels of oil offthe coast of Egypt after colliding with another suezmax, reported to be the Singaporean-flaggedTrijata (built 1990).

Genmar president John Tavlarios told TradeWinds Friday evening in New York that his tanker had beenstruck by the other vessel in open sea about 25 miles outside Port Sayeed. Tavlarios said he had noword regarding possible leakage from the second tanker. He said no Genmar crewmen had beeninjured and he believed no one had been hurt aboard Trijata.

The accident happened about 11:15 pm local time, he said, so responders were about two hours intotheir efforts to limit pollution from the crash. Booms were being placed around Genmar Kestrel,

which had damage to the No. 5 ballast tank. Contrary to initial reports, Genmar Kestrel's engines arestill working, he said.

"Our vessel is drifting now but is fully operational," he said.

Trijata is said to be managed by GBLT Shipmanagement PTE Ltd of Singapore. The tanker was fullyloaded at the time of the collision. Tavlarios said he had no further information about what caused thecollision.

"All I know is that they hit us," he said. Genmar Kestrel had sailed from the Arabian Gulf on 24January and was due to discharge its cargo in Italy. Tavlarios said he did not know whether it wascarrying a full 1 million barrel cargo.

A crew of 26 was on board the double-sided Genmar Kestrel, which is classed by the AmericanBureau of Shipping, he said.

Genmar Kestrel has been inspected five times by the US Coast Guard since August 2003 with noreported detentions, according to the Eqasis database. Only one inspection turned up multipledeficiencies, a total of seven in 18 August 2003 in St Croix. Under previous managers, it had a dozeninspections without a detention since October 1998.

The incident was said to be under investigation by the Egyptian Coast Guard.

The job will take around three months and is the latest yacht revenue to bolster B+V. Late last year itsnewbuilding division secured deals to construct two multimillion-dollar vessels, including a 112-metre,Phillipe Starck-designed vessel carrying the project name Sigma .

B+V, which now sees mega-yachts as a core business, says work on the Ecstasea involves mainly theowner's cabin. The vessel was delivered in The Netherlands only last year by Feadship van Lent.

Hamburg-based B+V declines to identify the owner or what the conversion contract is worth. However,it is known to be one of four yachts in the fleet of Chelsea Football Club owner Abramovich. It evenhas a helipad.

Another of Abramovich's yachts, the 114-metre Pelorus , is also at B+V. It has also won a deal tomodernise yet a third, Le Grand Bleu , which will involve a further several months' work.

Both the Ecstasea and Pelorus are operated by Blue Ocean Yacht Management. B+V is now part ofthe newly merged German shipbuilding and repair group ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems AG, which alsoincorporates Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW).

The fledgeling alliance, which embraces Hellenic Shipyards SA of Greece, has combined annual sales ofaround EUR 2.2bn ($2.88bn) and employs at least 9,000 people. Some 800 jobs are to go in the nextcouple of years to achieve savings of up to EUR 150m.

B+V's success in the yacht market comes as Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri is also chasing suchcontracts. It has formed a partnership with luxury-yacht builder Benetti to design, market and buildmega-yachts.

V Ships, the world's largest shipmanager, announced last year that its passengership-managementarm, V Ships Leisure, had also forged a partnership with Benetti to acquire yacht broker and managerFraser Yachts Worldwide.

Meanwhile, the crown prince of Dubai is said to have ordered a luxury yacht twice the size ofAbramovich's Ecstasea . It is said to be costing more than $225m, roughly the equivalent of two VLCCnewbuildings.

Heerema Marine Contractors installs firsttruss spar to use polyester mooring system

Heerema Marine Contractors (HMC) has successfully installed the first truss spar ever to use apolyester mooring system.

The Mad Dog spar which is located in Green Canyon Block 782 in a water depth of approximately1,348m is the first permanent polyester mooring system to be installed in the Gulf of Mexico.

It has the largest diameter polyester rope ever made, with a jacketed diameter of 270mm and requiredthe largest quantity of polyester mooring tethers ever produced for a single offshore mooring project.

Using its Deepwater Construction Vessel (DCV) Balder, HMC installed several chain/spiral strand wiremooring systems. However, this was the first installation of a polyester mooring system. The Balder'sunique large mooring line deployment winch was used to handle the extensive quantity of polyesterrope required for this project.

In preparing the installation, the HMC project team took both the similarities and differences ofinstalling a polyester system to a sheathed spiral strand system into consideration. Since polyesterropes may not come in contact with the seafloor, HMC developed procedures to keep the polyester offthe seafloor during all phases of the installation.

Another area where differences applied in the approach is the vulnerability of polyester rope forcontact with sharp edges, steel wires and heat. Snagging or tearing of any of the fibres could reducethe efficiency of the ropes strength in the future.

Yang Ming set to order five shipsin Taiwan

Taiwanese box carrier Yang Ming Line is poised to order five 8,000-teu ships, probably at Taiwan'sChina Shipbuilding Corp (CSBC), although it has also been making enquiries at Korean and Chineseyards.

Yang Ming is seeking early deliveries for the newbuildings but sources say all shipyards are only able tooffer 2008 dates at prices of between $120m and $130m each.

Korean shipbuilding sources confirm that Yang Ming is enquiring for five 8,000-teu post-panamax shipsat the country's major yards and has also approached Chinese shipbuilders, including Hudong andDalian New. But most market observers believe CSBC will win the order in the end.

"In the past, when Yang Ming sent out its enquiries, the contract eventually landed with CSBC. So weare expecting that for this round of orders, it will do the same," said one shipbuilding source.

An order for five 8,000-teu ships suggests Yang Ming is looking at deploying the newbuildings in thePacific.

In late 2003, Yang Ming teamed up with alliance partner K Line of Japan to order four 8,000-teuvessels each to be deployed on a joint Asia-Europe service starting in 2006.

More boxship orders in China forWagenborg

Leading Dutch shipowner Wagenborg is back in China for more newbuildings. The company, whichalready has at least five multipurpose (MPP) ships on order there, is said to have signed up for two1,118-teu container vessels at Qingshan Shipyard.

Delfzijl-based Wagenborg says it is negotiating with two different yards but a spokesman could notconfirm a deal.

The feeder containerships are said to be costing $23.4m each and will be delivered in 2006.

It is said that Qingshan has agreed to accept payment in a combination of US dollars and Euros, minimising currency-exchange risks linked to the purchase of European equipment.

Other owners building at Qingshan include Everard, Hanseatic Lloyd, and Wagenborg compatriotRederij C Vermeulen. Wagenborg is also talking to Chinese yards about further MPPs.

It still has options awaiting negotiation.

Existing firm Wagenborg contracts involve approximately 17,500-dwt MPPs at both Hudong ZhonghuaShipyard and Mawei Shipyard.

It was reported towards the end of last year that Wagenborg, which has a fleet of around 140 ships, had already ordered more MPPs, each costing an estimated $23m.

Wagenborg also has several newbuildings on order at shipyards in The Netherlands, including at FerusSmit in Groningen and Royal Niestern Sander in Delfzijl.
