Vladimir Vasil’evich Ustinov, full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Director of the Institute of Metal Physics, Ural Division, Russian Academy of Sciences, the first-rate academic institution of the Ural Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences, cele- brated his 60th birthday on September 9, 2009. The Ural territory, its main metallurgical center— Nizhnii Tagil—is the homeland of V. V. Ustinov. Hav- ing graduated from the high school in 1966 with a silver medal, he entered the physical faculty of the Ural State University. In 1971, having graduated from the Univer- sity with honors degree in theoretical physics, he became a postgraduate at the Institute of Metal Physics. In 1975, he defended a candidate thesis; in 1986, he defended his doctoral dissertation. Since 1997, he is a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sci- ences (Division of the General Physics and Astronomy, subject “Physics”); since 2008, he is a full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Division of Nano- technologies and Information Technologies, subject “Physics of Nanostructures and Nanotechnologies”). V. V. Ustinov has developed the fundamentals of spin-electron kinetics in metallic nanostructures, per- formed fundamental works on spin-dependent surface scattering and spin resonance in metallic nanolayers, constructed a theory of spin-transport phenomena in superlattices with a giant magnetoresistance, which ensured the establishment and a successful develop- ment in Russia of a new field of physical kinetics— spintronics. V. V. Ustinov together with the researchers of the scientific school he headed actively works in the field of the technology of molecular-beam epitaxy of magnetic nanoheterostructures; he is now the recog- nized leader in this field of spintronics in Russia. The Editorial Staff of the Fizika metallov i metall- ovedenie (Physics of Metals and Metallography) jour- nal and the scientific community heartily congratulate Vladimir Vasil’evich with his jubilee and wishes him good health and new achievements in his scientific, managerial, and publishing activity.
