Common Reasons Why Data Management Isnt Used

Data management costs too much and is hard to use. We make one of a kind parts and data managementcant help us.

Management will never buy off on a new system sincewe have a process that already works.

We tried data management once and it failed. It just isntfor us.

We have a shared drive and we do ECOs, so we dontneed a data management program.

It will take to long to setup and go live. We save PDFs for the shop and vendors. Since wedont share CAD data we dont need data management.

We already went through a process of installing a MRP

system so that is all we need for our business. A datamanagement system is redundant and we dont want to

Common Reasons Why Data Management Isnt Used(Continued)

We are already short staffed and I have to do the work oftwo people. I cant afford the downtime to learn anothernew software and fall further behind.

Every time we look at data management software IT triesto use a free open source file storage system to save

the company money. Data management is only for big companies. This is the way we have always done it and it works. Data management will add another layer to the design

process and take longer to design my products. We have been making the same product for years and itnever changes. Data management isnt needed sincenothing ever changes.

We tried Workgroup PDM and EPDM is essentially

    Acme Company

Acme Company Overview 2 current CAD users

Both users create CAD data in 2D and 3D.

1 office person that does all purchasing and order entryThis person creates all purchase orders and enters information into the MRP system to

keep a record of all parts, material, and payments with vendors

1 quality person in charge of inspection, shipping, and all certification documentation

All the material and process certifications are kept in check by this person as well as allthe first article inspections related to the customers design criteria

5 machinistsThe machinists view the print via PDF as well as import the programs related to the

    work order.

$1795.00 per seat. $495.00 subscription per year

1 office person that does all purchasing and order entry$1295.00 per seat. $395.00 subscription per year.

1 quality person in charge of inspection, shipping, and all certification documentationThis person could actually share the previous license depending on the amount of timeeach user is logged in. (For our example we will add the a new seat for this person.)

$1295.00 per seat. $395.00 subscription per year.

5 machinistsThe viewer comes in 5 pack licenses. (They could also borrow a license from above,

however; for this exercise we will add the viewer seats.)$2995.00 per 5 pack viewer. $995.00 subscription per year

Implementation:Depending on the level of implementation, cost and time will vary depending on the

complexity of automation and the vendor used for the implementation and training. For this example we will use a standard 5 day quick start with a cost of $1495.00 per

    day.A typical quick start includes:

Installation of software Training for users and administrators Basic setup and instruction to automate the basic processes. (i.e. Workflow, PDF printing etc.)

    Myth #1 Finding Files

Searching On average 3.5hours are spent each week on searches that dont bring up the correct

information due to bad searches or incorrect data to search on. (Susan Feldman VP contenttechnologies IDC)

Based on a 60,000 salary that is $5251.00per worker per year.

As much as 10% of a companies salary costs are wasted on ineffective searches. (TheButler Group)

EPDM allows you to create customizable searches based any properties you would like tokeep track of for any file type you want to store in the vault.

Myth #2 We dont need a process

Workflow Workflow can be specified by a current manufacturing process (i.e. Lean Manufacturing,

ISO, Six Sigma, etc.) If you dont have a pre-defined process then you can create a workflow that mimics your

current process or start a new process to capture the flow of your product throughout thedesign process.

Partners & Napierad agency adopted a workflow process based on ISO 9000 at therequest of Kodak. Identifying a workflow they were able to save 40% on the job andincrease productivity by3.5%.

Based on the workflow, Partners & Napier were able to grow billing by500% over five yearsbecause they are able to win business by jumping on opportunities they previously passedon due to time constraints. (fastcompany.com by Linda Tischler)

Myth #2 We dont need a process

Workflow The workflow in EPDM can be tailored to any companies specific needs. You can create

multiple workflows and automate multiple time consuming functions. (i.e. Emailnotifications, bulk printing, converting files to other formats, Checking the designwith company standards, etc.)

Myth #3 The Order entry method works fine

Data Entry Manually retyping data from the BOM into a ERP or MRP system is time consuming and

often results in errors during data entry. In many companies, valuable hours are spent manually re-keying metadata from CAD into

ERP. By virtually eliminating the need for redundant multiple data entry, the technologytypically pays for itself in 60-90days. (Elmo Solutions Inc. http://www.elmosolutions.com/Documents/Elmo_CAD-ERP_Connectivity-EN.html )

EPDM allows you to automatically export the BOM data into another system using XML. Itcan be triggered using a specified workflow state.

Myth #3 The shop floor always returns the drawings withthe changes needed for the next time we make this part.

    Markup

When a change on the shop floor is needed does theengineer get contacted to make a change on the model? When do you see the issues with the design? During theprocess or after it happens?
