Description

System description VKP 40Ex, VKP 40

The steam trap testing system consists of the data collector VKPN 40Ex or VKPN 40, the measuring transducer VKPS 40Ex andthe software for data management on the PC. The VKPN 40Ex / VKP 40 can check and evaluate all types and makes of steam trapsfor loss of live steam and banking-up of condensate. The diagnostic system detects and analyses ultrasonic vibrations on the trap body caused by live steam flowing through the streamtrap. The ultrasonic vibration is transmitted through the trap body and picked up by the hand-held probe by pressing the sensor tiponto a point of the trap body that is characteristic of the respective trap type. The ultrasonic vibration is then converted into electricpulses and – in the form of digital signals – fed via cable to the data collector VKPN 40Ex or VKPN 40. The display of the datacollector shows the signals received during the test as a standing curve. With this graphical representation one can see at oncewhether the tested steam trap is working with or without loss of steam. The recorded ultrasonic vibration is analysed by the datacollector and evaluated in accordance with certain empirically ascertained limit values that depend on the trap type. During the testthe temperature of the steam trap is measured, too. Provided that a service pressure has been specified (on the PC), the diagnosticsystem identifies blocked steam traps that cause banking-up of condensate. .

If the annual operating hours and the steam costs have been entered in the system, the software can calculate the financial losscaused by faulty steam traps. To quantify the steam loss caused by faulty steam traps, empirically obtained test values are used asreference.

All curves recorded for a steam trap as well as the associated numerical test results and the corresponding analysis by the systemcan be stored and printed out.

For more detailed information on the system and its functions refer to the “Online Documentation” of the TRAPtest PCprogram.

Maintenance notes VKPN 40Ex, VKPS 40Ex

In case of visible signs of damage (e. g. cracks in the casing, faulty display, worn down probe tip, …) do not use theequipment in explosion-risk areas. Please contact GESTRA AG or a GESTRA company in your country. The equipment is provided with a rechargeable battery. To change this battery the equipment must be opened. Only trained personnelconversant with the explosion protection directive is allowed to perform the replacement. Only genuine GESTRA replacement partsmust be used.

Replacing battery unit of VKPN 40Ex

■ Make sure that the data collector is switched off before replacing the rechargeable battery!

■ Make sure that the data collector is not connected via connecting cable VKPA 40 when replacing therechargeable battery.

The rechargeable battery must be replaced when its charging capacity is no longer sufficient for the required test tasks. For thispurpose remove the 6 screws from the bottom of the equipment. Detach the upper part of the equipment from the lower part.Attention: The upper part is connected to the lower part via a ribbon cable. This cable connection does not have to be detached. Therechargeable battery unit is embedded with protective elements on a green board. This unit is fixed to the bottom of the equipmentby means of 4 screws. In order to exchange the battery this whole unit has to be replaced by a genuine GESTRA AG sparepart. Undo the 4 screws and remove the battery unit. Put the new battery unit onto the two centric items of the connector. Insert the4 screws (M 2.5, M 3) and fasten them moderately. Then mount the two halves of the equipment together, making sure that thegasket is properly inserted and the ribbon cable is not jammed between the two equipment parts. Then mount the 6 casingscrews and tighten them with a torque of 0.8 Nm. The battery can now be charged as described in section “Charging batteries”.Note that the full performance of a new rechargeable battery is achieved only after about 5 complete charge and discharge cycles.Environmental regulations have to be taken into account when disposing of rechargeable batteries.

Attention

■■■■■ When opening the equipment make sure that neither the connecting cable VKPA 40 nor the measuringtransducer VKPS 40Ex is connected.

■ Do not open the equipment in explosion-risk areas! To prevent damage to electronic components shield theequipment against electrostatic discharges (e.s.d).

■ Any type of work on the equipment – apart from replacing the rechargeable battery – must only beperformed by GESTRA AG.

When used for its intended purpose the diagnostic system is maintenance-free. However, we recommend that the system should besent to GESTRA AG Bremen every 5 years for a general inspection.

Data Exchange between PC and Data Collector VKPN 40Ex or VKPN 40

The menu Data Collector enables the communication between the data collector and the PC and the organization of the datacollector via PC. For more information refer to section “Transferring test tasks to data collector”, “Deleting test tasks for datacollector” and “Transferring test results from data collector to PC” in the Online Documentation of the PC program.

Make sure that the data collector is connected and ready for use and then select the submenu “Data exchange” of the main menu ofthe data collector (“Connecting and Commissioning” see pages 10 – 12).

When selecting the menu “Data exchange” the following display appears:

During the data transfer the following display appears:

During a data exchange information on the transferred data is also indicated:“Tasks to VKPN” (if test tasks are transferred to the data collector) or“Delete task” (if test tasks are deleted on the data collector).

■ If the power supply unit is not connected the data collector cannot communicate with the PC.

Attention

■ A safety protocol is created in order to prevent any loss of data during the transfer.Consequently, the transfer rate can vary between 30 seconds and 1.5 minutes for 100 steam traps.

Once the data transfer is completed the display “Waiting for data” appears.Press the ENTER key to return to the main menu of the data collector.

Note

Connect the measuring transducer VKPS 40Ex with the data collector (“Connecting and commissioning” see pages 10 – 12).When the data collector is ready for operation select the submenu Test. The display will show the test tasks transferred from the PC to the data collector as well as their counting numbers, the associatedplant designation and the designation of the plant section.

■ During a test the measuring transducer VKPS 40Ex also measures the surface temperature of the steam trap. If theservice pressure prevailing at the place of installation has been specificied, the diagnostic system will be able toidentify the steam trap that causes the banking-up of condensate by comparing the boiling temperature associatedwith the service pressure and the temperature measured at the steam trap.(For more information see Online Documentation / Menu Test Objects / Creating Test Objects).

Attention

■ For a correct temperature measurement it is important that the surface of the reference point on the trapwhere the tip of the measuring probe is applied is smooth and metallically bare. Otherwise considerabledeviations between the temperature reading and the actual temperature will be the consequence, resulting infaulty analysis and incorrect evaluation.

Use the arrow buttons , to mark the test task in question and press the ENTER key. The cursor position is indicated by .The display shows the task number, the plant designation and the designation of the plant section as well as the task list of thesteam traps to be checked (test objects) and the individual traps with their places of installation.

■■■■■ The connection between the data collector and the measuring transducer must not be undone during thisoperating condition.

■■■■■ The rechargeable batteries of the data collector supply the measuring transducer with power. Avoid longinterruptions between selecting the steam trap for testing (graphical representation on the display) and thetest start so that the battery can hold charge for a longer period of time.

Note

■ As soon as the graphical representation is displayed by the data collector, the measuring transducer will beautomatically switched off. (The LED of the measuring transducer lights up when the test starts).

Press the tip of the measuring probe at various points in the close vicinity of the steam trap (supports, uninsulated pipes upstream anddownstream of the trap) to detect the respective sound levels.By comparing the MEAN VALUE with the MEASURED VALUE the influence of foreign noise on the test can be confirmed or ruled out.

If the detected sound level is below the mean value of the trap test (MEASURED VALUE < MEAN VALUE), an influence of foreign noisecan be ruled out.In this case use the arrow buttons , to mark FOREIGN NOISE: NO.

If the detected sound level exceeds the mean value of the trap test (MEASURED VALUE > MEAN VALUE), the place where the steamis installed is influenced by foreign noise. In this case use the arrow buttons , to mark FOREIGN NOISE: YES.

Press the ENTER key to show the recorded sound curve and its evaluation on the display.

Checking Steam Traps -continued-

■ Make sure that the measuring probe is applied to the same points on the trap bodies of steam traps of the same type sothat the test results of the steam traps can be compared and changes can be ascertained when repeating the tests.

■■■■■ Provided that the upstream pressure has been specified on the PC, the temperature of the steam trap body will also bemeasured and used for the analysis. In this case the surface of the reference point on the trap where the tip of themeasuring probe is applied has to be smooth and metallically bare. Otherwise considerable deviations between thetemperature reading and the actual temperature will be the consequence, resulting in faulty analysis and incorrectevaluation.

Note that the probe shall be applied at right angles to the trap surface.

Reference points for measurement
