Winner of 14 international awards, this malagueño guitarist studied at the conservatory in the capital and at the Robert Schumann University in Dusseldorf. He has performed in important festivals around the world as well as with prestigious orchestras such as the Neue Westfalen Philharmonic and he has recorded two discs for RTVE and Naxos Classicos.

With this version of Cinderella by Acuario Teatro, which is within the ‘Let’s go to the Theatre with our Parents’ series, they stage a story that is filled with positive and happy feelings.

The vibrant and syncopated melodies and the improvised rhythms of jazz are part of the Las Lagunas programme this month. Throughout seven evenings, diverse jazz bands and orchestras will inundate the Las Lagunas Theatre with the typical sounds of african slaves of New orleans in the mid XIX century.

Abren la segunda edición del festival cuatro jóvenes andaluces que componen una sólida formación instrumental con un fuerte compromiso con el jazz. Enrique Oliver es músico habitual de las sesiones de jazz de Barcelona. José Carra es compositor y pianista con raíces clásicas, además de profesor de composición. Pablo Báez compagina sus estudios con su trabajo como freelance mientras que José Luis Gómez forma parte de la Big Band del Conservatorio de Málaga así como de la agrupación Altramuz.

The second edition of the Festival opens with four young andaluces who form a solid instrumental group with a strong commitment to jazz. Enrique Oliver is a regular musician at the Barcelona jazz sessions. José Carra is a composer and pianist with classic roots, in addition to teaching composition. Pablo Báez combines his studies with freelance work while José Luis Gómez forms part of the Malaga Conservatory Big Band as well as the Altramuz group.

The Mijas Jazz Orchestra is made up of 16 musicians dedicated to giving life to the repertoire of the legendary jazz formations of the swing era. On this ocassion, the musical programme will include arrangements from the bands of Count Basie and Duke Ellington.

Singer and drummer Ana Cisneros presents a show in collaboration with flautist Gareth Lockrane, pianist Phil Wilkinson and counterbassist Marko Lohikari. Under an innovative and minimalist acoustic concept, the formation produce a homage to some of the most representative trios in the history of jazz as well as recorded works of singers who have influenced their style.

La cantante y baterista Ana Cisneros presenta un espectáculo en colaboración con el flautista Gareth Lockrane, el pianista Phil Wilkinson y el contrabajista Marko Lohikari. Bajo un concepto acústico innovador y minimalista, la formación rinde homenaje a algunos de los más representativos tríos de la historia del Jazz así como a trabajos discográficos de cantantes que han influenciado su estilo.

Uno de los atractivos de esta banda es su diversidad instrumental. En ella, instrumentos como el piano, el clarinete o la trompeta se salen del contexto clásico habitual y otros, como el banjo o el helicón, proporcionan ese sonido genuino de la época. Dos generaciones de artistas conviven en esta formación, en la que se mezclan la energía, el empuje y el talento de los músicos más jóvenes, con la experiencia y la solera de veteranos como Geoff (banjo y voz) o Frank (clarinete). Completan la formación Diego Suárez al piano, Rafa Huertas a la batería y Jony Serrano en el contrabajo.

One of the attractions of this band is its instrumental diversity. Instruments such as the piano, clarinet and the trumpet leave behind the usual classic context and others, like the banjo and the helicon provide the genuine sound of the era. Two generations of artists form this group, in which there is a great mix of energy and drive. There is much talent both in the youngest musicians and the more experienced musicians like Geoff (banjo and vocals) and Frank (clarinet). The formation is completed with Diego Suarez on the piano, Rafa Huertas on drums and Jony Serrano on double bass.

Conocida por su gran sentido del humor, The New Orleans Jump Band se ha hecho famosa por sus pasacalles, abandonando el escenario y interpretando su música en contacto con el público.

With a repertoire of original themes composed and arranged by Marcelo Davalos for this formation, a versatile set is presented with Alberto Martin on trumpet, Leonardo la Peruta on saxophone, trombonist Andy Peacock and Jose Luis Gomez on drums.

The Band, which comprise musicians of several different nationalites (Sweden, Britain, Argentina and Germany) offers New Orleans jazz of the purest style. Known for their great sense of humour and impromptu, The New Orleans Jump Band has become famous for their parades, leaving the stage and interpreting their music in contact with the public.

Su disco ‘Mosaico’, editado en 2002, vino a poner en evidencia el renovado y saludable estado de salud del jazz de alta calidad que se hace en Andalucía. En 2005, sale a la luz un nuevo trabajo con una formación más variada, Numen, donde cuenta con colaboraciones de músicos de primera fila y con el que entra a formar parte del Circuito Andaluz de Música. Junto a Pedro Cortejosa, completan la formación Dani Domínguez, José López y Carlos Pino.

His disc ‘Mosaico’, edited in 2002, showed evidence of the renewed and healthy state of jazz of a high quality that is performed in Andalucia. In 2005, Numen produced new work of a more varied form, making use of collaborations with musicians of the first order and thus beginning to form part of the Andalucian Circuit of Music. Along with Pedro Cortejosa, they complete the formation with Dani Dominguez, Jose Lopez and Carlos Pino.

Paco Pérez presents ‘De profundis’, a pictorial display in which he intends to put forward a dreamlike world for the spectator, a pleasant and futuristic world that offers a contemplative experience of the universe. There are spaces of geometric beauty broken up by provocative spots that slide precipitously, all this, supported by a minimalist concept of colour, reminiscent of primitive art.

The combination of Marco Vargas and Chloé Brùle is characterised by a shared vision of understanding dance, as dance. Their principal interest is to tell about and pass on the history of dance, expressing in narrative form movement and its inquietudes. They constantly search for enrichment through their collaboration with other artists. Their journey began in 2005; since then, they have been developing their own artistic language with a great wealth of expression. In Mijas, they will perform ‘Timetable’. Or time inevitable.

Uno de los lugares en que los aficionados a este néctar pueden deleitar su paladar con las diferentes variedades de dicha bebida, no sólo de Málaga, sino de toda la geografía nacional, es el Museo del Vino de Mijas.

La enoteca, ubicada en pleno corazón de Mijas Pueblo, conserva el ambiente característico de las antiguas bodegas andaluzas. Conocida como ‘La casa de la luz’ –antigua sede de las oficinas de Sevillana-, el edificio fue fundado en el año 1839.

Barriles, etiquetas de botella, carteles y estampaciones publicitarias para vino y pasas, así como diversos utensilios usados en el manejo de los envases, como decantadores o descorchadores, son algunos de los elementos que decoran las paredes de este enclave, lo que lo convierte en una auténtica cueva del tesoro para los amantes de la enología.

One of the places where aficionados of this nectar can indulge their palate with the different varieties of this said drink, not only types from Malga, but from all over Spain, is the Mijas Wine Museum.

The wine cellar, located in the heart of Mijas village, retains the characteristic atmosphere of the ancient andalucian wine bodegas. Known as the ‘La casa de la luz’ –former Sevillana head office-, the building was founded in 1839.

Barrels, bottle labels, posters and advertisements for wine and diverse tools used for handling the products, such as decanters and corkscrews, are just some of the elements that decorate the walls of this enclave, which makes it a real treasure trove for all wine lovers.

Cuenta con vinos de todas las denominaciones de origen, cavas, vinos generosos, vinos de mesa, tintos o rosados, así como una selección de ‘delicatessen’ y artículos tradicionales como la sal en escamas, cremas de arrope, cremas balsámicas, mermeladas, aceites de oliva o productos derivados del castaño.

Su personal, siempre atento y experto en enología, aconseja a los clientes sobre las diferentes especialidades que pueden adquirir, dándoles a probar los mejores caldos de su amplia colección, que cuenta con más de 30 tipos diferentes de vinos de mesa. Aproximadamente un 70% de los visitantes suele adquirir alguna de las variedades que ha probado durante su estancia en el establecimiento.

Ensaladas, embutidos y platos exclusivos como tartaletas de pisto con atún, habitas baby en cucharitas chinas, endivias con pastel de cabracho o muslos de pato al vino de Málaga son algunos de los manjares que se pueden degustar en este establecimiento.

Asimismo, la enoteca organiza catas y degustaciones de productos, ya sea vino, puros o chocolate. El local también acoge diversas celebraciones, como cumpleaños, despedidas de soltero o reuniones empresariales previa petición.

Los productos más vendidos son los tintos en invierno y los blancos y el vino Málaga en verano.

En cuanto a productos típicos, son muy populares los aceites de oliva y las sales aromatizadas.

Las reuniones de cata para grupos son más frecuentes en invierno. La temporada alta del establecimiento es de marzo a junio.

El museo cuenta con una colección de etiquetas de botellas datadas a partir del año 1920.

El vino más caro que se puede adquirir en la enoteca es un Petit Verdot Abadía Retuerta de 2003 valorado en 130 euros.

El club de montaña Almoradú pone en marcha la III Travesía Sierra de Mijas; toda la prueba se desarrollará a través la sierra mijeña por senderos, caminos y algún pequeño tramo de carretera, con un recorrido aproximado de 21 km. El itinerario tendrá una duración aproximada de entre 7 y 8 horas. El precio de las inscripciones es de 8 euros para los federados y 12 para los no federados.

This stage of the competition, named ‘Top Speed’ Trophy, concludes next November with the G.T. test.

The Almoradú Mountain Club begins the III Sierra de Mijas traverse; The test will take place in the Sierra de Mijas, on footpaths and rural roads as well as a small stretch of highway. VERBENA DE SANTA TERESA

El ecuador del mes de octubre llega hasta La Cala car-gado de aires festivos. Como manda la tradición, los vecinos del núcleo marinero celebran la festividad de su patrona, Santa Teresa. La misa y la procesión en honor de la imagen, el día 15, marcan el inicio de los festejos, que continuarán durante todo el fin de semana con la verbena -viernes 16 y sábado 17- y la romería, que el domingo congregará en la explanada de Los Olivos a todos los devotos de la patrona caleña.

El cortijo del Lagar de Don Elías fue nuestro punto de encuentro. Lo poco que queda del lugar en el que tuvo sus primeras experiencias vitales -vivió allí desde los 2 a casi los 20 años- le trajo muchos recuerdos. Hombres cultivando con sumo cuidado la viña o los olivares en los que jugaba con su hermana Carmen a piratas son ya parte del pasado, pero este espacio nos sirvió de nexo para hablar de historia, presente y futuro.

Viviendo en el campo, ¿cómo encuentras la pintura?La verdad es que tiene su aquel que en ese ambiente tan especial salga alguien con esta vocación y que haya dirigido una profesión. Carecíamos

de casi de todo y había que imaginarse muchas cosas. Cuando era pequeño, Carmen -refiriéndose a su hermana y conocida ceramista-, que siempre ha sido muy vital, inventaba juegos y hacíamos belenes con barro... Creo que cada uno, de manera innata, viene predispuesto a ciertas cosas; recuerdo que en el colegio dibujaba muy bien y cambiaba el dibujo por algo que quisiera de otro chico. Por

otro lado, me escapé un poco de un determinado ambiente, estudié en el seminario y, a partir de ahí, consolido mi disposición hacia el mundo de la pintura, empecé a hacer mis pinitos; era muy vocacional.

Pedro Escalona vive en el Lagar de Don Elías hasta los 20 años. Después se desplaza con su familia a Las Lagunas y en 1972 se marcha a estudiar Bellas Artes a Madrid

The Lagar de Don Elias cortijo was our meeting point. The little that is left of this place provided him with his first vital experiences and he had many memories of this time - he lived there from 2 until almost 20 years of age. Men cultivating the vineyards and olive groves with extreme care whilst he and his sister Carmen played pirates, a part of the past but this area served as a connection to speak about hitory, present and future. Living in the countryside, how did you find painting?The truth is that if you have a talent in this area and you are in such a special ambience, your vocation comes out and you develop the profession.

We were lacking many things so you had to use your imagination. When we were children Carmen - referring to his sister and known ceramist- who has always been lively, invented games and made nativity scenes with clay mud... I believe that everyone, in an inate way, is predisposed to certain things. I remember that at school I drew very well and changed the drawing into something that was wanted for another boy. On the other hand, I did escape from this particualr environment at times, then I studied for a seminar, and from there my disposition strengthened toward the world of painting. I began my first steps; it was very vocational.

Pedro Escalona lived in the district of el Lagar de Don Elias until he was 20 years old. After moving with his family to Las Lagunas he went to study fine arts in 1972 in Madrid

¿Recuerdas tu primer cuadro? Sí, creo que era el cortijo. Tengo por ahí, no sé qué edad tendría, una pintura -que guardó alguno de mis hermanos-, era el cortijo en papel, muy básico; puede que lo hiciera con Carmen, también le gusta pintar, y seguramente los primeros colores los comprara ella porque yo no tenía dinero. ¿Cuándo se traslada tu familia a Las Lagunas? A principios de los ‘70 empezó el turismo a mover la economía y mi familia decide trasladarse a calle San Mateo, donde hace una casa. Habría entonces una docena de viviendas en construcción. Aquí, una de mis hermanas, Aurelia, ejerció de maestra rural -también lo fue en el cortijo-, cumpliendo una importante función social. Prácticamente no había nada, olivares y huertas. ¿A qué edad comenzaste?Aquí estaba limitado, mis primeros cuadros eran muy intuitivos pero quería crecer y me fui a Málaga al Museo de Bellas Artes y estuve copiando maestros casi un año, fue mi primer contacto con la pintura real. Conocí a gente que

me animó a estudiar Bellas Artes; necesitaba una formación porque me daba cuenta de que esto iba mucho más allá del capricho o la habilidad. Fui a Madrid, que fue una enorme osadía, pasé del campo a la gran ciudad y fue renacer, una de las cosas más importantes que me han pasado en la vida; estuve allí casi diez años. A partir de ahí, lo entiendo como profesión: la apuesta y el proyecto de vida es ser pintor, con lo bueno y lo malo. Ya que he llegado aquí tengo que decir que no iba descaminado, aposté por algo que da sentido a mi vida. ¿Cómo lo veían en casa? Raro, era curioso que el niño pintara. Tuve que buscarme la vida para hacer la carrera porque era una época donde era complicado subsistir. Desde el primer momento, tuve que combinar estudios y trabajo.Y cuando vuelves de Madrid... Regreso a casa de mis padres.Viví en lo que era la escuela que se convirtió en mi casa, después en mi taller, y empiezo a pintar el barrio, es mi época de Las Lagunas, una serie que

muestra lo caótico de este núcleo en construcción. En los ‘80, los barrios estaban más adelantados pero todavía eran caóticos, pinté paisajes del extrarradio, que a mí me encantaba, también lo que veía desde mi terraza, luego empecé a pintar objetos cercanos, lo inmediato, como un zoom. También impartí clases en la Universidad Popular, cuando ésta se iniciaba, en Las Lagunas.¿Ha influido Mijas en tu obra? Todo el tiempo que he estado aquí, he estado pintando Mijas. Pinto mis grandes pasiones y lo cercano, es mi ecosistema. Tengo necesidad de contar lo que tengo a mi alrededor porque es lo que mejor conozco y le puedo dar un determinado sentimiento. ¿Cómo se lleva el tener una hija que se dedique al arte? (Risas) Me parece muy bien, es la persona que mejor te puede entender dentro de la profesión, pero no le puedo engañar, ni ella se puede engañar, es un mundo complejo y lo único que puedo hacer es transmitirle mi experiencia, ser su tutor, después, queda todo por hacer.

Do you remember your first picture?Yes, I believe it was the cortijo. I found a painting there that my brothers kept, I don’t know what age I did it. It was the cortijo on paper, it was quite basic; it’s possible that I did it with Carmen as she liked doing things like this and for sure she bought the colours as I had no money.When did your family first move to Las Lagunas? At the beginning of the 1970s when tourism started to improve the economy and my family decided to move to calle San Mateo where they had a house. At this time there would have been only a dozen houses consturcted. Here one of my sisters Aurelia, was a rural teacher - also in the cortijo - fulfilling an important social function. There was hardly anthing here, just olive groves and orchards.At what age did you get started? Here, I was limited, my first paintings were very intuitive but I wanted to grow so I went to Malaga to the Museum of Fine Arts and I copied the maestros for almost a year, this was my first contact with real painting. I met people who encouraged me to study Fine Arts; I needed training as I


realised that this was far beyond caprice or skill. I wnet to Madrid which was very brave, coming from the countryside to the big city but here I was reborn. It was one of the most important things to happen to me in my life and I was there for ten years. I began to understand it as a profession, the opportunity, the life project of being a painter. My decision was not misguided I took a chance on something that gave meaning to my life. How did they see it at home? As unusual, it was curious that a child was doing this. I had to race to make a living beacuse it was in a time when it was difficult to survive. From the outset I had to combine study and work. And when you returned from

Madrid.. I returned to my parents house. I lived in the school which converted into my house, later in the workshop I started to paint the neighbourhood. It was my era of Las Lagunas, a series that illustrates the chaotic construction of the nucleus. During the 1980s the neighbourhoods were more advanced but were still chaotic. I painted scenes from the outlaying districts which I loved and could always see from my patio, then began painting nearby objects, as if I had zoomed in on them. I also gave classes at the Popular University when it first started in Las Lagunas.Has Mijas influenced your

work? All the time I have been here I have been painting Mijas. I paint my great passions and things nearby, it’s my ecosystem. I need what I have around me because that’s what I know best and I can give a particular feeling . How does it feel having a daughter who is dedicated to art?(A little laughter at this point) I like it very much, she is the best person to understand me within my profession. I cannot deceive her, nor can she deceive me. It is a complex world and the only thing I can do is convey my experience, to be her tutor, this remains to be done.

El pintor -que estudió en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Fernando (Madrid), entre 1972 y 1977, año que obtuvo una beca en el Paular de Segovia- frente a su primer taller. Recuerda la curiosidad que despertaba en los niños que acudían al colegio y que se asomaban a la ventana, entre ellos, un jovencísimo Juan Manuel Reyes, artista muy vinculado a Escalona. Este espacio, en calle San Marcos (Las Lagunas), antes lo ocupó la escuela rural de su hermana Aurelia y también fue su casa. Ahora es su hija María la que tiene su estudio en la segunda planta. The painter - who studied at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts (Madrid), between 1972 and 1977, won a scholar-ship at el Paular de Segovia - set against his first workshop. He recalls the curio-sity his work in children looking through the window, among them a very young Juan Manuel Reyes, an artist very close to Escalona. This exterior , in San Mar-cos street (Las Lagunas), was before he occupied the rural school of his sister Aurelia which became his house. Now his daughter Maria has the studio on the second floor. Pedro has live in Alhaurin for the past 12 years.

Próximos proyectos...Lo más inmediato es una exposición en la galería Ansorena de Madrid este mismo mes y a final de año vuelvo a exponer en la Casa de la Cultura de Fuengirola, después de muchos años. Para el año que viene tengo un par de fechas en Holanda... Hay muchos proyectos. En Málaga, por ejemplo, cuando pasen cuatro o cinco años me gustaría hacer una exposición antológica, porque 40 años de profesión dan para mucho.¿En qué estás trabajando ahora?Estoy completando la colección sobre arqueología para próximas exposiciones y, a la vez, estoy trabajando en un tema nuevo con la cama como protagonista: el mundo de la intimidad, los pliegues, una figura que se insinúa, me gustaría volver a la figura por medio de este tema. Seguramente tarde 5 o 6 años en desarrollarlo porque un tema nuevo hay que asumirlo, ver cómo funciona, tratarlo con mucho mimo. También estoy haciendo muchos paisajes que me gustan de la huerta.¿Cómo te sientes en esta etapa de tu vida?Creo que es un buen momento de síntesis y madurez, que hay que aprovechar y disfrutar al máximo. Pienso que cada etapa hay que exprimirla para ver lo que te puede dar. Ésta es una profesión muy vital.

Next projects... The most imminent exhibition is in the Ansorena Gallery in Madrid this month and at the end of the year I am back again in the Cultural house of Fuengirola after many years. For next year I have a couple of dates in Holland... There are many projects. In Malaga, for example, in four or five years I would like to do a retrospective exhibition as 40 years in this profession is a lot. What are you working on now?
