VitrA: The Total Bathroom

It’s not a minor difference.

Or an empty promise.

It’s a fact: VitrA is the only global brand that totally designs and outfits bathrooms – quite literally from the floor up – with everything from washbasins and ceramic tiles to furniture, faucets and accessories. From the country that perfected the rituals of human cleanliness with hammams, comes the company that creates complete, contemporary Bathroom Culture.

As a result of its 64-year record of innovation, pioneering spirit, and perfectionism, VitrA products now appear in 75 countries on five continents. For public and private bathrooms, VitrA produces 6.2 million pieces of ceramic sanitaryware, 120 thousand bathroom furniture modules, 350 thousand bathtubs, 6 million faucets and mixers, 2.5 million bathroom accessories and 25 million m2 ceramic tiles every year.

VitrA’s quest is to create total bathrooms – complete living spaces that rival all other human environments in comfort, cutting-edge technology and aesthetics. All of which means VitrA turns bathrooms into beautiful experiences.

VitrA Tiles has sales offices and showrooms in Atlanta, Dublin, Arklow, Moscow and Cologne and a wide product portfolio that includes ceramic wall tiles, ceramic and porcelain floor tiles, mosaic and glass mosaic tiles, swimming pool tiles and complementary pieces. VitrA Rezidans offers aesthetic designs and a wide variety of indoor and outdoor tiles for living areas. VitrA Arkitekt offers professional tiles designed primarily for industrial and commercial establishments.

VitrA Tiles has an inhouse design team developing products for all kinds of living spaces, from bathrooms to kitchens and living rooms, terraces and pools. It also works with prominent international designers like Defne Koz, NOA and Ross Lovegrove to create special collections. Always the innovator, VitrA Tiles launched numerous new design concepts in 2006 that reflected global design trends. These included stylish and highly durable porcelain tile series, mosaic tiles for every taste and other new products incorporating advanced surface technologies like VitrAclean, VitrAantibacterial and VitrAprotect.

VitrA Info Centers, the only showrooms offering consultancy services for end-users and professionals, enable customers to view the whole range of VitrA tile products in one location and learn about developments, new technologies and new products in Turkey and global markets. Mission: Creating

Bathroom Culture

Influenced by the culture that gave birth to the sociable, luxurious Turkish hammam, VitrA elevates daily cleansing to make it a welcome ritual.

In essence, VitrA creates contemporary hammams by applying superior aesthetic concepts and sophisticated technology to every touchpoint in the bathroom – while drawing inspiration from the art and craftsmanship of Anatolian traditions in ceramic art. Thus, our relationship with water is constantly refined and redefined, as it was centuries ago with the introduction of the hammam, to create new Bathroom Culture.

Practical, comfortable and high-design, a VitrA bathroom is a complete, contemporary living space. It’s as inviting – though more private – as a living room or kitchen. In it we can restore balance to our lives through rest, recreation, indulgence in personal care and countless other revitalizing activities.

As a result, the often overlooked space of the bathroom becomes a core chamber that improves not only our homes and our businesses, but also the flow of our daily lives.

History:An Utter Success from

the Start

Like most global brands, VitrA’s success story began at a local Ievel.

In the 1940s Turkey faced huge shortages. To satisfy the demand for earthenware products, a ceramic manufacturing atelier was established in Kartal, İstanbul with an eight-man workforce.

Post-war, the company grew and began to focus on ceramic sanitaryware – a novelty in the marble-dominated Turkish market. Ceramic’s versatility and affordability made it a complete success domestically. The first production plant came on line to answer demand in 1958.

Launching the “VitrA” brand in 1966, the Eczacıbaşı Group gradually extended its capacity to include the full range of sanitary products.

VitrA’s first exports were made to Germany in the early 1980s. Soon after, VitrA began to establish itself as a global brand. To better serve its expanding foreign market, VitrA launched a manufacturing plant in Ireland in 1999. The recent acquisition of a plant in Germany is further testament to VitrA’s global outlook.

Production: Full Capacity and High

Technology

Worldwide, VitrA is the sixth largest manufacturer in its sector. In fact, its output of 6.2 million pieces of ceramic sanitaryware a year is greater than that of the entire ceramic sanitaryware industry of Germany.

However, output alone is not the only reason VitrA’s manufacturing capabilities are significant. While answering growing global demand, these cutting-edge factories and plants allow VitrA to produce sophisticated designs and maintain extremely high standards.

KARTAL, İSTANBULAnnual production capacity: 1,600,000 pieces of ceramic sanitaryware. VitrA’s first production plant is also one of its most technologically advanced. Equipped with CAD-CAM technology for product development, it also boasts robot glazing and computer-aided warehouse management. In 1992 it began producing complementary products, and in 2004, bathroom furniture.

BOZÜYÜK, BİLECİKOver 4,600,000 pieces of ceramic sanitaryware, 6,000,000 faucets and 18,000,000 m2 of tiles produced yearly.Established in 1977 but completely overhauled in 1995, this mega-complex is one of the world’s top sanitaryware production facilities in capacity, technology and quality. Advanced technology includes: high-pressure casting, rapid-drying moulds, fettling robots in casting shops, and barcode follow-up. The Bozüyük tile plant produces wall and floor tiles, porcelain floor tiles, swimming pool products and complementary pieces. A separate plant in the complex produces building chemicals.

TUZLA, İSTANBUL3,000,000 m2 of tiles and 2,500,000 bathroom accessories fabricated annually. ARKLOW, IRELANDAnnual plant capacity: 1,750,000 m2 of tiles. In operation since 1999, Arklow is Ireland’s sole ceramic tile factory to date. The plant produces large-scale wall tiles.

Philosophy: It’s all about

inspiration

Everyone needs bathrooms.

VitrA’s quest is to create complete, satisfying bathroom environments. This means transforming often overlooked spaces into something more than a necessity of modern life. It’s about creating an enjoyable experience by changing our perception of (and thus our interaction with) the bathroom. To realise this ambition, VitrA employs a large inhouse design studio and collaborates with a world-class array of acclaimed industrial designers. These talented individuals not only improve bathroom aesthetics, but functionality as well.

In 2006 alone, VitrA garnered four prestigious design awards. The İstanbul Collection by Ross Lovegrove won the Wallpaper Design Award for Best Bathroom, a Good Design Award and a Red Dot Design Award. Distinguished designer Defne Koz and her stunning Iznik Collection were also recognized with a Red Dot Design Award.

MATTEO THUN + PARTNERS (top left)Milan-based Matteo Thun + Partners is a studio of architecture, design and communication that refuses to be categorised in stylistic terms. This is the reason why the studio can approach such a wide variety and scale of work, ranging from hotels to coffee cups, with endless originality and vitality.

ROSS LOVEGROVE (top right)One of the most fascinating designers of the 21st century and recipient of countless awards, Ross Lovegrove creates sculptural and organic shapes using sophisticated technology and materials. His design concept ‘organic essentialism’ is inspired by elements from the natural world which are then reshaped into futuristic forms.

NOA (bottom left)The German Design studio NOA specialises in designing new products, technologies and communication strategies. NOA’s fruitful collaboration with VitrA has created the highly popular Matrix, Retro, Nuova, Mona and Espace collections.

DEFNE KOZ (bottom center)From her studio in Milan, Turkish designer Defne Koz works with world famous brands. Creator of the Calm and Sense lines as well as of numerous tile collections for VitrA, Koz regularly participates in design exhibitions all across Europe, while her work regularly adorns the pages of prominent international publications.

İNCİ MUTLU (bottom right)Designer of VitrA’s Juno, Softcube, Think Hepi and Piu Due collections, Inci Mutlu creates uplifting environments with her bold, fluid style. Based in Milan, this Turkish designer regularly participates in internationally acclaimed design exhibitions, while her work for leading global brands regularly appears in highly respected trade publications.

PILOTS DESIGN Award-winning industrial design engineers at Pilots Design define their work by placing themselves in the often opposing roles of designer, client, user, manufacturer and supplier.
