MANY LENDERS OFFER LOANS FOR PEOPLE or businesses with poor credit. "Bad creditlenders" can be banks, credit unions, subprime lenders, private finance companies, hard moneylenders, debt consolidators, payday loan lenders, car financing companies and more. However, onlya portion of each type of lender offers bad credit loans, and each has its advantages anddisadvantages.
WHAT IS BAD CREDIT? Although the numbers vary slightly from one source to the next, creditscores of less than 620 are generally considered poor. Scores of less than 550 are considered verypoor.
PEOPLE WITH POOR CREDIT CAN OFTENTIMES GET RELIEF from high debt, highmortgage payments and high interest payments by getting a bad credit loan. In some cases they caneven get a credit card balance reduced.
PEOPLE CONSIDERING A BAD CREDIT LOAN need to choose a smart, safe route beforetaking on such a loan. Here are a few steps that can help borrowers avoid problems:
1. Become educated about the bad credit loan options available from a number of lenders2. Investigate each lender and its loan programs. Shop around for the best deals3. Obtain any materials the lenders can provide on their bad credit loan programs4. Read the materials carefully, watching out for any potential trouble spots-such as upfront
fees, extremely high interest rates or a lender who seems to be in a rush to make the loan5. Try talking to some of the lender's customers-you might have friends or family who've
used the lender in the past6. Steer clear of payday loan companies. It's unlikely a good deal could be found there.7. Check the lender's profile and rating with the Better Business Bureau (Web site:
www.bbb.org)8. Above all, DON'T PAY FRONT MONEY for any loan.
DEPENDING ON THE LENDER, THE PURPOSE OF THE LOAN (for example, mortgage,refinance or debt consolidation) and the size of the loan being sought, a lender might charge alegitimate application processing fee. But not everyone agrees on what is a legitimate fee.
A PROCESSING FEE OF $500 OR SO is deemed excessive by many lending experts. Legitimateprocessing fees may be needed to cover necessary expenses incurred by the lender, including suchthings as preparation of property appraisals, documentation and agreements. If you're using a loanbroker and the processing fee seems excessive, tell your broker you won't agree to the loan when theprocessing fee is so high.
