Bucket Brigade Community-Based Air Sampling

Primarily used to determine the source of fugitive air releases.

Has been successfully used to call attention to air pollution violators.

TSUs approach will determine the effectiveness of the Bucket Brigade device in detecting local TRI releases.

*Note: Official Bucket Brigade service provided by Global Community Monitor (http://www.gcmonitor.org/) is $7,500.00

Study Area: Cayce Homes and Environs Nashville, TNNashvilles largest public housing community with 710 units and over 2,400 residents on 63 acres. 88% of the population is African American with 89% of households are headed by a single parent. 57% of the residents are children under the age of 18

Residents suffer from above average asthma rates, especially children.

Community is impacted by a variety of air pollution sources, including TRI facilities, Interstate highways, and small businesses.

No government air monitor is located within two miles of the community.

Community PartnersThe Martha OBryan Center at Cayce Homes, Meharry Medical College, and the Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance

September 2014 - Completed Fall 2014Objective: Train TSU student team in the use of GIS, GPS, and TRI mapping tools in air quality assessment
