“This fine new institution is the work of my friend Peter Wright who, within little more than one year, succeeded in gaining Government for this new Idea which promised neither a good interest for the invested capital nor chances for propaganda or any other obvious advantages. Only people who have worked here will understand how great this achievement is in India. Peter Wright is an Oxford Graduate who has come out to India for the purpose of such social and educational work. He lives on a tiny salary – half of what I have and understands it to gain the most conservative people for his plans ”the most conservative people for his plans.

In passing he mentions a “‘friend’ a Persian dealer in antiquities who has the nice name Rustom Hormodiar. He is an arch‐crook, but he has got a few nice things. I am helping him to furnish his hut and I hope in return to get from him a little Persian Miniature of a Bagpiper which I like very much.”

“A f d ft Ch i t Miss Rangarao t B l Sh i th P i i l f th“A few days after Christmas Miss Rangarao came to Bangalore. She is the Principal of the Womens’ College which I am building in Nagpur (Central India). She is very good looking and clever person, ‐ but her friendship sometimes is troublesome, ‐ as she takes too much of my time. The college building means a lot of extra work anyhow and it is difficult to make the g g yprincipal understand that I do not like to see this work increased by personal correspondence, ‐ even if it may be very nice correspondence. I spent New Years Eve outside with her in the jungle. It was pitchdark, and we made a huge fire on a rock in order to keep us warm and have enough light for our food ”enough light for our food.”
