Bancroft Library Pictorial Collections

The Bancroft Library Pictorial Collection, comprising an estimated 3 million items in a variety of media, documents and illustrates the history of California and the American West. While there is representation of the entire geographical area from the Rocky Mountains to Hawaii and from Panama to Alaska, the primary area of concentration is Northern California. Media present include original oil paintings and watercolors, drawings, prints, and photographs in every major format and historical process. The development of photography and the growth of the American West are chronologically parallel, which allows the Pictorial Collection to provide a complete panorama of settlement and expansion. Special emphasis is given to the California Gold Rush and 19th-century images of California transportation. Other major subject areas significantly represented in the collections include Yosemite and other wilderness areas; mining in California, Nevada, Alaska, and Mexico; the lumber industry; portrait of individuals prominent in the history of the West; Native Americans in California; early exploration and geographical surveys; California Missions; the Monterey Peninsula; vacation and leisure activities; scenic views and landscapes; major industrial projects (bridge and dam constructions, shipyards, etc.); World War II in California; Japanese American relocation; Chinese Americans in California; and immigrant labor. The Bancroft Library owns some of the first pictures ever made of San Francisco, Monterey, and countless other locations along the Pacific coast and Hawaii.

Bancroft holdings are chiefly original photographic prints, prints, and drawings (as opposed to study and reference copies of originals). They are, for the most part, rare or unique. While some individual images may be present in other UC collections, these will be the exceptions and not the rule.

Use statistics are collected for Bancroft holdings as a whole, but are not specific enough to give reliable numbers for usage of specific pictorial collections. The collections support a high volume of research use, spanning a very large array of topics. It is very difficult to characterize heavy use, or to categorize ?parts of the collection? in a way that would be meaningful for purposes of comparison to other Visual Materials collections. Portraits of prominent Californians and historic San Francisco Bay Area views are consistently requested, as are the paintings, prints, and drawings from the Robert B. Honeyman , Jr. collection of early Californian and Western American pictorial material. Topical areas with consistently heavy use include railroads, Chinese and Japanese Americans, and the Gold Rush. Also, images by major Western photographers are often requested; photographers such as Carleton Watkins, Eadweard Muybridge, and Timothy O?Sullivan.

Los Angeles Times Daily News Photographs (Coll#1386)

Collection consists of 20,000 contact prints (a 10% sample) from the Los Angeles daily news morgue negatives in collection 1387. 20 boxes (10.0 linear ft.) Arranged in the following series: 1. Subject files in alphabetical order (boxes 1-17); 2. Miscellaneous dating guide information (box 18); 3. Subject index to Daily News (boxes 19-20). Notes: The Los Angeles daily news was originally named the Illustrated daily news by Cornelius Vanderbilt, Jr. when he started it in 1923. He copied the tabloid format of the New York daily news, although he rejected lurid and sensational journalism. In 1926 the paper went bankrupt and was taken over by Manchester Boddy, who changed the name to the Los Angeles daily news. He kept the tabloid format, with its heavy reliance on photographs. In 1954 it merged with the Mirror, the afternoon paper of the Los Angeles times, and became the Mirror-News. It lost reporters, columnists, and its more liberal flavor, and ceased publication in the early 1960s. All

The Chicano Art Digital Image Collection consists of 1,362 images and their descriptions. These were selected as a small cross-section of a much larger collection of more than 14,000 archival slides in the collections of four of California's most important Chicano/Latino cultural arts centers/galleries. The slide archives of those centers are already established in CEMA as permanent collections. Those four centers include San Diego's Centro Cultural de la Raza, Los Angeles' Self-Help Graphics and Art , San Francisco's Galería de la Raza, and Sacramento's Royal Chicano Air Force. Moreover, an estimated 5,000 silkscreen prints of the above-mentioned Chicano cultural centers, as well as of individual Chicano artists, are in CEMA's permanent collections. Moreover, there is an estimated 1,000 photographs from several performing arts organizations, Teatro Campesino and the Asian American Theater Company. Silkscreen prints and slides.

This is a collection of about 4500 8x10 glossy mounted photographs of architecture: residential, commercial and religious. Geographic areas covered are the United States (colonial - modern), Europe (broadly), Mexico, Russia, Canada, "American Inheritance" in a variety of countries as well as specific European architectural influences in the United States. The shots are both exterior images and interior images showing period furnishings.

This may be unique within the UC system, though correspondence with Wayne Andrews indicates another UC as a purchaser of his images as well

Alas, this collection is NOT being used primarily because there is no bibliographic record in either the local online system nor in Melvyl. There is, however, a d-base database of the individual mounted images numbered 1-4527. This db needs to be ported to another platform; ideally this should be web-accessible. Even more ideally, it should be digitized and web accessible.

Aerial Photo Collection, Map Room, UCSC

The Map Room holds the region's largest and most comprehensive collection of aerial photographs of the five-county Monterey Bay region. The collection includes approximately 33,000 photographs, the earliest of which date from 1928. Most of the photos are black and white, but several flights are in color. The collection is most heavily used by earth science and environmental studies faculty and graduate students, by local geologists and hydrologists, and by local history researchers. The aerial photos document growth and change in the Monterey Bay region over the last 80 years. They document urbanization, agriculture, and environmental change such as coastal erosion and flood damage.

Many (perhaps most) of the flights are unique to UCSC. We are often told by patrons (especially those from outside our area) that we are the only known source for many flights. There is almost no overlap within the UC system. Some flights are also held at the US Geological Survey library in Menlo Park, and at the National Archives in Washington DC.

Most of the collection is used heavily. It is easier to say that there are some flights that only cover the Santa Cruz harbor, and these are the least-used flights. There are approximately 8 of these, out of 223 flights.

This collection contains 3,056 colored 35mm slides of Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps of the 5-county region for which UCSC is responsible under the UC/Stanford Map Libraries Group agreement. The slides depict over 1600 maps. Each map was filmed once at full size, and some early maps were filmed in four sectional exposures to provide an enlargement to show as much detail as possible for easier readability. The original project of photographing the maps took place over four years in the early 1970s, and is estimated to have cost several thousand dollars. In the early days of fire insurance underwriting, it was the custom of companies to have an agent inspect each property before accepting liability for loss by fire. When it became obvious that this practice was not

efficient, detailed maps were created that enabled the insurance underwriter to read and interpret the printed map in his office, and issue the fire protection coverage accordingly. This demand for maps created the Sanborn Map Company of New York in 1866. The maps show details of construction, including materials in walls and roof, street information such as width of the street and location of water and electrical lines, the dimensions of the property, etc. In commercial areas the name of the business is usually given. These maps provide an invaluable detailed record of the growth of towns, and of the businesses that came and went over the years. They also document changes made to natural resources such as creeks and woodlands. The earliest maps are of1883 Santa Cruz; the earliest maps of Monterey are 1885. UCBBancroft Library Pictorial Collections

Selected Bancroft collections and single images, primarily of historical California subjects. Most were digitized through the California Heritage project, with significant additional projects to digitize Western paintings, prints and drawings as well as early photographic works (daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, and tintypes.)

Since most of our holdings are rare or unique historic images, there is not likely to be extensive or significant overlap with other UC collections.

The Japanese American Evacuation and Relocation collection, the Honeyman collection of early Californian and Western American pictorial material (paintings, prints, etc.), portrait collections, and images of early San Francisco and California transportation from the Roy D. Graves collection.

UCSB

California Ethnic and Multicultural Archives, Department of Special Collections, University Libraries

This project has made available to the general public and to schools a collection of rare visual images in the Chicano cultural arts. These cataloged images were drawn from the archives of four of the largest Chicano/Latino cultural centers in California. The centers' unique collections were established earlier in CEMA so that they could be preserved and made accessible for research and study. These centers include San Diego's Centro Cultural de la Raza, San Francisco's Galeria de la Raza, Sacramento's Royal Chicano Air Force, and Los Angeles' Self-Help Graphics and Art. The Chicano Art Digital Image Collection is the name given to this project that has made a Chicano visual arts digital image collection accessible to Internet users. This digital image collection now amounts to close to 1,400 visual arts images that were selected from the vast slide collections in the archives of the four cultural centers. The selections represent many different facets of Chicano cultural arts and include art work by well-known and not-so-well-known Chican(a)o artists. Included are images of silk screen art, murals, installation art, cajas and nichos, paintings, drawings, sculptures, and cultural processions as in Dia de los Muertos. A taxonomy is included that defines the terminology used.

A very small percentage is expected to be held by other UC campuses; no other campus is the repository for these organization's archives. No survey has been attempted yet.
