These branding guidelines have been customized to address unique components of direct response. They provide flexibility and breadth of options in how to apply guidelines for the brand essentials, including the logo, the brand architecture, the tagline, color palette, typography, imagery, tone of voice and grid system. The graphic examples presented throughout this document are conceptual to support rationale of specific guidelines and are not necessarily live in-market pieces.

Strong and relevant practices are a necessary driver in creating and maintaining a closer personalized relationship with our supporters. It is recognized that what works today with one segment, may not work tomorrow as preferences and tastes change.

To identify the best balance of certain brand guidelines and response driving techniques for ongoing communications, the Libertarian Party encourages marketers to continue to test the effectiveness of direct response techniques. With the goal of maintaining results and cost efficiencies, tests should be carried out in the smallest, statistically valid quantities that can measure the impact of variations of creative brand elements against the current Libertarian Visual Identity.

For specific questions regarding these guidelines, contact the Libertarian Party Brand or Marketing Communications Manager at: [email protected] or www.lp.org/brand.

This is the new visual identity for the Libertarian Party and should be used for all communications, solicitations and recruiting efforts .

The logo’s size, positioning and color treatment are governed by rules designed to maintain the brand’s consistent identity . It cannot be accurately reproduced with any typeface, or be hand drawn, scanned or modified .

The logo files are available on: www.lp.org/support/logo

New Visual IdentityThe Libertarian Party has revised it’s identity and branding. With the change to this new visual identity, we have also have changed the way we do business.

We have moved toward a more fluid, broad-based recruitment campaign designed with our supporters in mind. The brand architecture is designed to accommodate this shift. Libertarian recruiters and marketers will have opportunities to convey and promote our solutions within this architecture.

These guidelines are simple, flexible and focuses on making Libertarians easier for the outside world to understand.

Formal Logo Usage

When a formal approach is needed, the logo should be used on white background . The eagle head should ALWAYS appear white .

File name: Libertarian_logo_small.epsUse this logo variation for images are are to be reproduced less than 2” wide .

Primary Logo Usage

There are two versions of the logo each one has been adjusted to reproduce best at specific sizes .

For a less formal or everyday use, the logo should be reversed out of the Libertarian Gray background . The same guidelines should be followed when selecting the correct logo to size ratio .

The eagle head should ALWAYS appear white and this logo should align with the left margin .

Clear Space

To maintain the integrity of the identity, a margin of clear space must be kept around the mark . This clear space is based on the X Height and extends around the whole logo . No other graphic elements, such as typography, rules or photography, should infringe in this clear space .

Note: The top clear area starts from the top of the eagle head and not the tip of the wing .

Keep this area between red lines clear .

clear space starts from top of eagle’s head

X Height Measurement

Since the size of the logo might change depending on usage, the best way to measure is to use the X Height of “Libertarian” . This X Height will maintain a consistent measurement throughout the branding and be the basis for the logo’s measurement .

The top and bottom of the torch align with the cap height and baseline of the letters .

Supporting Graphics

These are examples of the Libertarian logo being used with a gray background . These examples illustrate:

The logo should be on the left margin and the gray bar extends to the right .

The gray bar should only contain the logo, tagline and any contact information .

The website and contact information should align with the right margin .

The size of the logo and the clear space determines the width of the gray bar .

The gray bar aligns with the top of the layout .

The yellow background accompanies this alternate logo option . These examples illustrate:

The yellow background is solid Libertarian Gold .

The Statue image is inserted on top of the Libertarian Gold background with a Multiply Effect and an opacity of 50% .

The Statue of Liberty image is taken from www.lp.org/support/images/statue_of_liberty

Approved Colors

Color is an important component of the Libertarian brand and should be used consistently across all forms of print and digital communication .

Gold reflects our belief in capitalism and trust that a free market can generate the best solutions with minimal reprecussions . This color also builds on the equity built in the previous visual identity .

Historically, Black has been used to represent anarchy . The Libertarians don’t beleive that government should be eliminated completely, only lessened . Therefore, we use the color Gray (50% of black) to represent this philosophy .

To deemphasize headline text, the Libertarian Gold color can be used at a 50% tint . There are examples of this later in this guide .

Things to Avoid

Any changes to the shape and color of a logo reduce its impact and, over time, can defeat the entire purpose of an identity and logo program . Therefore, it is imperative that you do not alter logo graphics by applying filters and special effects, or by changing shapes, colors, letters, fonts or spacing .

Do not add effects to the logo Do not change the logo colors

Do not change the logo elements

Do not reverse logo out of alternative color background

DO NOT use this version of the logo anymore .

Do not outline the logo

Additional Photography

Additional photography is an important additional design consideration . The correct selection of photos can convey additional information that can influence the viewers .

Photography must:be over 300 d .p .i . when used at actual size

be in color

be less than 1/3 the size of the Statue of Liberty

not have a transparent effect applied

be well lit and color corrected

not use a border

If possible, the photography should:show Libertarian supporters

tell a story

convey an exhuberence and optimism

Statue of Liberty Images

The image of the Statue of Liberty has been associated with the Libertarians since our founding . The statue symbolizes our belief in freedom, strength, enlightenment and determination .

To reinforce these beliefs, the image of the Statue of Liberty should be used on all less formal communications . These communications are typically used to target mass gropus of potential supporters and voters .

The image of the Statue must:be used on the Libertarian Gold background

be placed in the lower portion of the layout

be inserted with the “multliply effect”

have an opacity / transparency of 50%

the face of the statue must face inward and not looking off the edge of the page

be the largest element on the layout

bleed off the edges of the layout

Use the image files provided at: www.lp.org/support/sol-photos

These images have been color balanced and converted to grayscale . They are also at sufficient resolution to be used on most promotional materials . However, if in doubt check with you printer first .

Facts

In order to substantiate claims that the Democrat Party and the Republican Party have become corrupted, the Libertarian party needs to incorporate important facts into their solutions .

The incorporatiion of charts and graphs that illustrate the claim is highly encouraged, but all sources must be creditable and listed . By listing the sources for our information, the Libertarians are giving an impression of openness and legitimacy .

Typical LayoutWhen designing the chart, match the approved layout and typefaces .

The Facts:While federal revenues are recovering from the recent recession, spending continues to grow sharply, resulting in four consecutive years of deficits exceeding $1 trillion . This results in increased borrowing and debt .

Backing up claims with facts and statistics from creditable sources is be the best way to educate and enlighten potential voters and supporters.

The Libertarians can correct the damage caused by Democrat and Republican politicians.

PersonalityThe Libertarian personality embodies that way of thinking through seven distinct characteristics:

Cultured: We are a worldly and sophisticated lot; we are not content to stay in our own backyard . We are willing to encourage other nations

Balanced: Our constant goal is to be fair, equitable and impartial to everyone regardless of gender, religion or sexual orientation .

Hopeful: The Libertarians recognize that the Democrat and Republican parties hae become greedy and corrupted . The solutions we propose are grounded in our Constitution and will make the United States a better place for everyone .

Perseverant: We are steadfast when pursuing our goals, despite difficulties or obstacles . We recognize that the political system is against us . Therefore, the change we seek must come from the bottom - up .

Visionary: We think beyond our political party and do what is right for the public .

Catalytic: We are agents of change .

Direct: We use a simple tone that is easy to understand without talking down to people . We don’t use abstract terms like “Hope and Change” that are misleading and open to imtrepretation .

Our personality helps our audiences relate to us . It should come across in every communication — visual, copy, even speeches . It should be present in everything we do, although the extent to which individual personality traits are used should vary by audience . How we speak to an audience of non-supporters, needs to feel very different from what we say to an audience of our supporters .

Message and Tone

Libertarians are optimists who believe anything is possible and frequently prove it . This message is achieved not only through words and images, but through tone . In copy, tone is crafted through word choice, sentence structure and point of view . And, of course, while the tone of your communication should vary according to the specific audience you are addressing-whether it’s advertising, email, a press release or any other form of communication—always keep the Libertarian brand in mind .

And in any shape or form, Libertarians copy tone should reflect the sentiment of the optimist . Bright, upward-looking and energizing . The message should be empowering, uplifting and backed-up by facts .

Grid System

To aid in the uniform layout of all marketing material, the Libertarians uses a grid system . This system establishes a solid visual and structural balance of the design elements and creates a structured layout .

This grid system enhances the visual experience of the viewer by making the page easier to navigate . It also aids in the deisgn and layout stages by forcing a priority to the presentation of information .

For consistancy with the grid, use the template files provided at: www.lp.org/support/print

Tired of being betrayed by the Democrat and Republican parties?

Join us for a new vision for America.

The answer to America’s political problems is the same commitment to freedom that earned America its greatness: a free-market economy and the abundance and prosperity it brings; a dedication to civil liberties and personal freedom that marks this country above all others; and a foreign policy of non-intervention, peace, and free trade as prescribed by America’s founders .

There are two major factors that immediately threaten the future of our nation .

Government Finance and SpendingWe call for the repeal of the income tax, the abolishment of the Internal Revenue Service and all federal programs and services not required under the U .S . Constitution . Government should not incur debt, which burdens future generations without their consent . We support the passage of a “Balanced Budget Amendment” to the U .S . Constitution, provided that the budget is balanced exclusively by cutting expenditures, and not by raising taxes .

Health CareWe favor restoring and reviving a free market health care system . We recognize the freedom of individuals to determine the level of health insurance they want (if any), the level of health care they want, the care providers they want, the medicines and treatments they will use and all other aspects of their medical care, including end-of-life decisions . People should be free to purchase health insurance across all of the state lines .

THE

UNITED

STATES

Our proposals can improve your life and our nation.

We stand by you on liberty.

Personal LibertyIndividuals should be free to make choices for themselves and to accept responsibility for the consequences of the choices they make . No individual, group, or government may initiate force against any other individual, group, or government . Our support of an individual’s right to make choices in life does not mean that we necessarily approve or disapprove of those choices .

Expression and CommunicationWe support full freedom of expression and oppose government censorship, regulation or control of communications media and technology .

Personal PrivacyLibertarians support the rights recognized by the Fourth Amendment to be secure in our persons, homes, and property .

Personal RelationshipsGovernment does not have the authority to define, license or restrict personal relationships . Consenting adults should be free to choose their own sexual practices and personal relationships .

AbortionRecognizing that abortion is a sensitive issue and that people can hold good-faith views on all sides, we believe that government should be kept out of the matter, leaving the question to each person for their conscientious consideration .

Crime and JusticeWe oppose reduction of constitutional safeguards of the rights of the criminally accused . We assert the common-law right of juries to judge not only the facts but also the justice of the law .

Self-DefenseWe oppose all laws at any level of government requiring registration of, or restricting, the ownership, manufacture, or transfer or sale of firearms or ammunition .

Economic LibertyAll members of society should have abundant opportunities to achieve economic success . A free and competitive market allocates resources in the most efficient manner . Each person has the right to offer goods and services to others on the free market . The only proper role of government in the economic realm is to protect property rights, adjudicate disputes, and provide a legal framework in which voluntary trade is protected . All efforts by government to redistribute wealth, or to control or manage trade, are improper in a free society .

Property and ContractProperty rights are entitled to the same protection as all other human rights .

EnvironmentWe support a clean and healthy environment and sensible use of our natural resources .

Energy and ResourcesWhile energy is needed to fuel a modern society, government should not be subsidizing any particular form of energy .

Money and Financial MarketsWe favor free-market banking, with unrestricted competition among banks and depository institutions of all types .

Monopolies and CorporationsWe oppose government subsidies to business, labor, or any other special interest . Industries should be governed by free markets .

Our proposals can improve your life and our nation.

As part of a European tour, U.S. Libertarian Party Chair Geoffrey J. Neale will be the featured speaker at a conference hosted by the Individual Freedom Party (P-LIB), the Spanish equivalent of the U.S. Libertarian Party, on JAN. 6 in Madrid.

Neale’s tour, which will include stops in Russia and Germany, coincides with the emergence of a new pan-European party — the European Party for International Liberty (EPIL) — which aims to advance libertarian policy in Europe.

A distinguished panel of libertarian leaders will speak at the conference and will pose questions for Chair Neale, followed by an open discussion with conference participants. The panelists are:

Juan Ramón Rallo, an Austrian school economist and media pundit who writes for several newspapers and regularly appears on radio and TV. He is the director of the Instituto Juan de Mariana, the main Austrian school think tank in Spain.José Carlos Rodríguez, chief editor of The Gazette International (La Gaceta) daily newspaper. Roald Schoenmakers, secretary of international relations for P-LIB and provisional chair of EPIL.

Libertarian Party calls for permanent government spending slowdown, defunding Obamacareby Jennifer Paul Monday, October 25, 2013

There is no impending government shutdown — only a government slowdown. The threat of a “shutdown” is designed to scare voters while avoiding scrutiny of reckless government overspending.

If federal lawmakers do not pass a budget or a “continuing resolution” (CR) by Oct. 1, a government spending slowdown will take effect. This could halt almost $1 trillion in annualized spending that the CR would authorize, which is the size of the current federal deficit. If made permanent, this would cut annual federal spending by approximately 27 percent to $2.7 trillion — the current level of revenues coming in.

Are drone strikes in Yemen convincing its civilians that the U.S. government is the most dangerous terrorist?by Cedric de Losta Friday, October 21, 2013

“Yemenis perceive the U.S. drones strikes, which are killing peaceful citizens, to be acts of terrorism,” said Geoffrey J. Neale, chair of the Libertarian National Committee. “At least in some respects, they are.”

“Terrorism” refers to acts of violence that are intended to instill fear and that deliberately target or disregard the safety of civilians.

“While instilling fear among the Yemeni population at large may not be President Obama’s goal, it is well known that drone strikes terrify civilians,” said Neale. “His drone war in Yemen is blatant disregard for human life.”
