The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey is an extraordinary educational and artistic community. We carry on a tra-dition that began in 1933 with classes and an exhibit space in a second floor loft on Summit Avenue. Because of the dedication of artists and art lovers, the Art Center grew and in 1973 we moved to our current home on Elm Street. By 1980 we had become accredited as a museum of contemporary art by the American Alliance of Muse-ums, and we are still one of only eight accredited museums in the state of New Jersey. Today our staff, faculty, and students bring the Art Center’s vision to life: to create an inclusive and welcoming community where lives are transformed and enriched through the shared experience of art.

We’re very excited to welcome our new Director of Studio School, Libby Clarke, who assumed the position in July. Please enjoy this newly designed catalog, which was her first labor of love here at the Art Center. Libby is creative, delightful, and open to your input. And as always, I also welcome the opportunity to hear from you by phone (908) 273-9121 x212 or email [email protected]

Impact of the Art CenterCynthia McChesney Director of Development and Marketing

With the help of donors, we provide community programs in all shapes and sizes. A few examples:

• Seniors in the SAGE Eldercare Spend-a-Day Program enjoy art classes with an Art Center teaching artist, every week, 52 weeks a year.

• Children in Elizabeth, NJ, participate with our museum and studio school staff as they work on arts enrichment projects throughout the school year.

• Students from low-income families, but who have a passion for art, are able to participate in Art Center classes through our scholarship program.

These community programs are only possible because of our donors. Consider donating today! Your tax-deductible gift brings art to seniors, children, and students who otherwise might not have access to professional art programs. For more information or to donate, please contact me at 908-273-9121 x 241 or [email protected].

Curator’s StatementMary Birmingham Curator

Art can be transformative—it has the power to inform, inspire, and enrich our lives. Our exhibition program creates meaningful contexts and conversations by connecting artists with the public and vice versa. It brings provocative and enriching contemporary art to our community and the public at large.

With artists at the center of everything we do, I see the Art Center as a place where diverse audiences can find meaning, inspiration, and pleasure in art and interact with the artists who create it.

This fall season, the museum will present three exhibitions exploring contemporary sculpture: an immersive installation by Ted Larsen; Renée Stout’s assemblages incorporating hand-made and found objects; and the large-scale painted abstract sculptures by Rachel Beach. All three exhibitions will inspire audiences and invite them to examine the complex relationship between two-dimensional images and three-dimensional forms.

Vision for the Studio SchoolLibby Clarke Director of Studio School

I am honored to have been chosen to come into the Art Center and develop the Studio School’s ongoing mission. For over eighty years we have woven art in all its iterations into the lives of our students, instructors, staff, and community.

The Visual Arts Center exists to serve all levels of student and its instructors strive to develop each person‘s talents through concerted attention, cogent lessons, and a deep love of art. We are fortunate to have an institution in which every facet of the art making process can reside: we house the most introductory of classes all the way to a museum space exhibiting contemporary art.

My charge this season is to fully understand and support the students, staff, and faculty of the Art Center. I look forward to the continuous and delightful surprises that I am finding inside each classroom.

Growing as an Artist“My work is inspired by nature—how seemingly disjointed or contrasting objects fit together so gracefully. I try to express this simplistic beauty in my jewelry. I like to keep it fresh, so I am constantly experimenting with different techniques and materials.”

“Years ago, my daughter took classes at the Art Center and six years ago I came back to start metalsmithing classes with

Thea Clark. I did not have any previous experience and Thea has taught

me so much, everything from technical skills to design conception.”

“I love the warm, creative atmosphere of her classes. The Art Center

has so much variety in courses, workshops, and

flexibility with open studios it has helped me grow as an artist

and as a person.”

–Tanya, a student at VACNJ for six years

Rachel Beach: TouchstoneMain Gallery | September 25 – March 19 Rachel Beach is a NY-based artist whose sculptural work explores the precarious balance of form as well as mean-ing. Her exhibition, Touchstone, utilizes freestanding ab-stract sculptures, video, and large-scale photographs to

examine the interplay between image and object, volume and void, lightness and mass, surface and structure, gesture and monument. The installation, which also includes images of hands, painted symbols, and stone-lifters, explores the interactions of these elements and challenges viewers to be aware of their own bodies in relation to the objects and space in the gallery.

Ted Larsen: Lined OutStudio X: September 25 – January 2Santa Fe artist Ted Larsen will create an immersive installation in Studio X comprising a network of horizontal and vertical linear elements attached directly to the gallery walls. Fabricated from steel rods covered with salvaged

automotive metal, the individual units combine to make patterns suggestive of Mondrian. It will generate for the viewer the experience of walking into a colorful three-dimensional drawing. While the term “line out” has multiple meanings, Larsen is most interested in the concept of lining out as arranging an extended line or lining out a route. In some areas of his installation, the extended line will literally extend into the physical environment of the gallery.

Using pre-painted materials allows Larsen to acknowledge

and incorporate past history. He explains, “The installation makes direct reference to the history of wall painting and yet offers new ways to see it. I have ‘lined out’ both the new and the old.”

Renée Stout: At the CrossroadsEisenberg Gallery: September 25 – March 19Washington, DC artist Renée Stout is well known for her handmade assemblages that combine African-American customs, vestigial religions, and popular culture with personal history and politics. The work explores Stout’s belief that humanity is at a vital crossroads, in need of guidance to navigate through a storm of conflict and inequality. According to the artist, “The crossroads is a place of chance, choices and decision making. Everyone has ancestors, and the way I see it, they’re all watching, waiting and wondering if we’ll make the right choices to bring the world to a more enlightened place, so that everyone has the ability and conditions in which to grow and flourish.”

Made from a variety of found objects and materials, Stout’s assemblages can suggest old-fashioned communication instruments. She positions each element in the show as a metaphorical device for receiving and harnessing spiritual power and wisdom from the past, enabling viewers to imagine a new world of possibilities for the future.

WHAT DOES S T UDYING ART DO FOR A PERSON? JOHN RUSK IN WEIGHS IN! Let two persons go out for a walk; the one a good sketcher, the other having no taste of the kind. Let them go down a green lane. There will be a great difference in the scene as perceived by the two individuals:

The one will see a lane and trees; he will perceive the trees to be green, though he will think nothing about it; he will see that the sun shines, and that it has a cheerful effect, but that the trees make the lane shady and cool; and he will see an old woman in a red cloak; — et voilà tout!

But what will the sketcher see? His eye is accustomed to search into the cause of beauty, and penetrate the minutest parts of loveliness. He looks up, and observes how the showery and subdivided sunshine comes sprinkled down among the

gleaming leaves overhead, till the air is filled with the emerald light... retiring shadows of the inner tree, where the white light again comes flashing in from behind, like showers of stars; and here and there a bough is seen emerging from the veil of leaves, of a hundred varied colours, where the old and gnarled wood is covered with the brightness, — the jewel brightness of the emerald moss, or the variegated and fantastic lichens, white and blue, purple and red, all mellowed and mingled into a garment of beauty from the old withered branch...

Is not this worth seeing? Yet if you are not a sketcher you will pass along the green lane, and when you come home again, have nothing to say or to think about it, but that you went down such and such a lane.

John Ruskin (1819–1900) was an English artist and a leading art critic of the Victorian era Quoted in The Art of Travel by Alain de Botton, edited slightly for effect

Exploring the Human SpiritOur sculpture students produce amazing works. Jarrett Goldberg is currently taking classes with Katie Truk and shared her work with us.

“My work celebrates the enormous range of human feelings including, but not limited to, the rage and anguish exhibited in these pieces. I work in terra cotta since I have found this very fluid medium lends itself to the abstract quality of my work were I am free to explore the depths of the human spirit.”

– Jarret is an Art Center Member and has been taking classes for about ten years.
