Hy is die huis ingedwing. Sy

vrou, Babsie (78), wat toe reeds

onraad vermoed het, is by die

agterdeur oorweldig.

Binne het hulle Smit, wat reeds

bebloed en erg beseer was, bo-op sy

vrou gegooi en geld van die egpaar

geis. Smit is hier verder aange-

rand en sy gesig is in die aanval

so vergruis dat hy gesterf het.

Nadat sy ook erg aangerand is en

verskeie kere met n skerp voor-

werp gesteek is, het die aanvallers

n trommeltjie kontant gebuit en

Babsie is in die kas gedwing.

Daar was ongeveer R2 000 in die

trommeltjie.

Die twee moordenaars het op die

vlug geslaan en Babsie kon haar

seun Riaan Venter bel. Hy het hom

na sy ouerhuis gehaas.

Venter het aan Vista vertel hy

kon onmiddellik sien sy pa is reeds

oorlede en hy het sy ma te hulp

gesnel. Sy het op die vloer gel en

erg gebloei.

Dit is net n wonderwerk dat

haar hart nie raakgesteek is nie,

het Venter ges.

Smit is in die hospitaal opge-

neem waar sy noodbehandeling

moes ontvang.

Sy is nog erg getraumatiseer en

baie emosioneel en was gister

steeds in die hospitaal.

Klagte van moord, huisbraak en

poging tot moord word deur die

polisie ondersoek.

Die polisie het gevra dat enigie-

mand wat iets gesien het hulle in

die ondersoek kan help.

Volgens inligting het n wegkom-

motor in die straat op die aanval-

lers gewag.

THE alertness of members of the Welkom

Flying Squad led to the arrest of three

suspects aged between 42 and 58 and the

seizure of copper pipes and gas cylinders

valued at R50 000.

The suspects will appear in the Welkom

Magistrates Court. They will face a

charge of possession of suspected stolen

property.

On Monday morning members of the

Welkom Flying Squad were busy with

their routine vehicle patrol on the Wel-

kom-Bronville road.

They noticed a suspicious bakkie. The

vehicle was searched.

They found large quantities of copper

pipes and gas cylinders. The three occu-

pants of the vehicle could not provide

documents of proof of ownership.

The three suspects were arrested by WO

Mokete Molibeli, WO Molelekoa Botipe and

Sgt Thabang Tau.

The alertness of members led to these

arrests and seizure, so I am very proud of

these members for ensuring that perpetra-

tors were brought to book to face the

might of the law, said the commander of

the Welkom Flying Squad, Lt Col Nkesi

Tsiu.

The mining companies are losing a lot

of property as a result of theft, so we

regard this as a breakthrough.

THIS past weekend Capital

Sounds, a local international

broadcast company, scooped the

prestigious Airshow of the Year

Award for its involvement as the

event organisers of the Durban

Air, Land and Sea Festival.

I am so thrilled that a Welkom-

based company was not only

awarded the contract to organise

this massive event which took

place along 3 km of Durbans

beach front in March this year,

but that we were also able to bring

the trophy back to Welkom, said

Brian Emmenis.

Many of the major role players

who were responsible for the

success of this great event are

from Welkom.

Beverley Emmenis headed the

team that was responsible for all

of the administrative tasks ranging

from the arranging of the worlds

best aerobatic pilots to participate

in the event, booking hotel

accommodation and co-ordinating

many vital planning sessions that

were needed to ensure that a great

world quality event was presented.

Hentie Odendaal of Odendaal

Marais Inc was the chief financial

officer for this mammoth event

and he meticulously worked

through a budget of millions of

rands.

Griffiths Mosia ensured that the

mega sound system used along the

beachfront was always in tip-top

condition and worked flawlessly.

He was assisted by a very large

team of freelance sound engineers

and technicians from the Gold-

fields who assisted Capital Sounds

on a freelance basis.

The music producer Louis van

Aswegen has worked with Brian

Emmenis Sounds for the past 35

years and is regarded as one of the

finest producers in South Africa.

Brian Emmenis, along with the

American broadcaster Mike

Spankie Galloway, provided the

broadcasting during the three-day

event.

Brian was also responsible for

the television production that was

broadcast across the world.

The event was attended by

200 000 spectators who came from

across South Africa to enjoy the

very first Air, Land and Sea

Festival to be presented in South

Africa.

For me it is a dream come true.

When the tender went out, we

took a chance and I was thrilled

that Capital Sounds was chosen to

host the event. I must, however,

stress that we were a very big

team and that we were backed by

many specialists in their respecti-

ve fields. This enabled us to

present a world-class event in

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). The event

was sponsored by the KZN

Treasury and the Ethekweni

Municipality, says Brian.

EK was op Maandag 3 Novem-

ber by dr. Kahn in Torontoweg vir

Ek het omstreeks 12:45 ingegaan

en het weer omstreeks 13:45

uitgekom. Toe ek my motor wou

aansluit, het ek gesien die

immobiliseerder se liggie was af.

Ek dink toe dat ek reeds die

sleutel ingedruk het om dit te

deaktiveer en draai toe die sleutel,

maar niks gebeur nie.

Ek het toe my man gebel (ons

bly in Ventersburg) en vir hom

daarvan ges.

Hy het ges hy sal kyk wat hy

kan doen. Ek dink toe by myself

ek sal die radio maar aanskakel

terwyl ek wag. Die radio was

morsdood en ek het toe begin

wonder of dit nie dalk die battery

kon wees nie, want my toeter was

toe ook morsdood. Ek het weer

my man gebel en vir hom ges ek

vermoed die battery het afgeloop

waarop hy toe vir my ges het dat

ek moet hoor of daar nie iemand

is wat my kan help om die motor

met n oorleikabel te probeer

aanskakel nie.

Ek het iemand gekry wat my

kon help, maar groot was my skok

toe ek die enjinkap oopgemaak het

en sien dat my battery heeltemal

weg was. Ek was so stomgeslaan

en verslae. Hoe het hulle dit

reggekry sonder dat iemand

onraad vermoed en dit terwyl dit

nog geren het in die tyd dat ek

in die dokter se spreekkamer was?

Ek kan nie glo dat iemand die

vermetelheid het om jou battery

uit jou voertuig te steel nie.

Ek s net dankie vir die Here

dat hulle nie my kar gesteel het

nie, want dan het ek baie groter

skade gehad as om net n nuwe

battery te koop.

S ek vra maar net dat die

motoriste bedag moet wees op so

iets, want in my wildste drome

het ek nooit gedink dat so iets met

my sal gebeur nie.

Welkom Retirement Village:

THE board of the Welkom

Retirement Village decided to

respond to the host of unfounded

allegations that has been made in

the media recently. We will not

become embroiled in a public

mud-slinging exercise, as it is not

in the interest of the good name of

the establishment or its tenants

and residents. However, we wish

to put certain facts straight.

The land and buildings, that are

commonly known as the Retire-

ment Village, are the property of

the South African Red Cross. The

Welkom Retirement Village, which

is a company, has a long-term

lease agreement with them to this

property for 99 years. This lease is

indeed registered as such at the

deeds office. The company

furthermore has the mandate to

administer the land and buildings

on behalf of the South African

Red Cross. This is clearly set out

in the lease documents. Only a

court of law can make a decision

on this issue. The Welkom

Retirement Village has a sound

relationship with the South

African Red Cross, is fully paid up

until 2018 and foresees no dispute

with the property owners.

During this year, a challenge

was lodged by certain of the

residents as to the legitimacy of

the current board. The facts will

not be discussed here, as it forms

part of a High Court case that is

still pending, hence it is sub

judice. The Welkom Retirement

Village will abide by the decision

of the court in this matter. What

may be divulged, is that the case

was brought on application by the

residents and opposed as such by

the Welkom Retirement Village

and the other respondents.

The case was set down for trial

recently, but as there appeared to

have been a material flaw in the

application against the Welkom

Retirement Village and the other

respondents, the case was postpo-

ned with costs offered for the

court day by the applicants. The

applicants were graciously

afforded time by the Welkom

Retirement Village and the other

respondents to attempt to remedy

the material defect. At the time of

going to press, no such interim

application had been received and

the Welkom Retirement Village

has instructed its attorneys to

apply for a court date to finalise

the matter.

In the mean time some of the

residents have also attempted to

establish a management forum

and board, in contradiction to

their own court application. The

Welkom Retirement Village has

informed them through their

lawyers that the step is not

legitimate. The proposed letting

agents and the proposed auditor

has also been formally informed

as such.

The Welkom Retirement Village

seeks to finalise this dispute as

soon as possible. The tenants and

residents have been traumatised

by this dispute and the pursuing

court case and should never have

been put through a process like

this. The Welkom Retirement

Villages current board will

always look after the best interest

of the tenants and residents.

A BANGLADESH businessman who

disappeared without a trace after being

kidnapped from his tuckshop in Kutloa-

nong, Odendaalsrus, last week, has been

found.

He was returned to his family on

Sunday.

According to a source in the Bangladesh

community, a ransom was paid to secure

his release.

This source tells Vista that numerous

cases of kidnapping involving ransom

monies have been reported this year.

Mossaraf Hossain (34) was attacked in

his Kutloanong tuckshop and taken with

force by three unknown men on 26

October at about 19:00.

It was suspected that he might have

been taken to the East Rand in Gau-

teng.

BARELY two months after

more than 20 policemen were

busted by the Hawks in one of

the biggest clampdowns ever

on corrupt officials, the police

arrested close to 40 civilians

and 23 more arrests will be

made in the next few days. All

of these arrests are related to

illegal gold mining.

Butana Khomphela, the MEC

for Roads, Safety and Policing,

thanked the many men and

women who worked tirelessly

for months to ensure that the

illegal gold mining trade in the

area can be dealt a heavy blow.

The police now believe that

they will make things hot for

the kingpins and main opera-

tors behind this trade.

Some very big fishes were

caught and the public will soon

see how luxury cars and

houses will be confiscated by

the state, Lt. Col Thabethe

Mpembe said during a media

briefing on Tuesday.

The suspects will appear in

court from today and will

mostly be charged on contra-

ventions of the act on organi-

sed crime.

Many of the civilians who

were arrested are foreign

nationals, mainly from Lesotho

and Zimbabwe, Mpembe said.

The police have so far

confiscated eight vehicles and

R93 000 in cash.

Most of the vehicles are

expensive makes, including

BMW and Mercedes. Some of

them are still brand new.

Many are registered in

Gauteng, while others are

locally registered. The cash

was mostly used to buy gold

from illegal operators.

According to Mpembe, the

suspects were kept under a

microscope over a period of

months to watch their move-

ments before the police moved

in. About 30 members of the

Hawks were involved in the

whole project while local police

assisted in the final operation

of arresting the suspects.

All the suspects were

arrested on warrants of arrest

which had already been

obtained. The whole action will

end tomorrow and the police

firmly believe that they have

managed to make a huge dent

in the illegal industry.

Rugbyunie (VRU) moet Cronj se

Die skoolhoof, Len Kleynhans,

en van die onderwysers hou

egter n wakende ogie om die

leerlinge se veiligheid te verse-

ker.

Ons het gerel dat die ses

matrieks in Bothaville eksamen

kan skryf en oorslaap. Sodoende

kan ons verseker dat hulle die

vraestelle betyds ontvang, het

Kleynhans ges.

Hy meen selfs skoolbusse sit

in die sand vas en n kind is al

beseer toe n kombi omgeslaan

het.

Wanneer dit ren, is dit nag.

Klagtes is al by die departement

Bids teachers farewell

THEBedelia PrimarySchool inWelkombids farewell to twobrilliant

teachers. Lynette Nieuwoudt has been teaching for a total of 41

years, the last 18 of those spent at Bedelia. Willie Nel has been

teaching for 30 years and has spent the last 22 years at Bedelia

Primary. They have spent a lifetime teaching, and the knowledge

they have imparted to their learners and the huge number of learn

ers who have passed through their hands is indescribable. The

school wishes them the very best for the new chapter in their lives

and the hope is that their "retirement" will be just as fulfilling as

the days they spent teaching.

Marietjie Pretorius, die

deel van die kerk se 50ste

bestaansjaar te bak en te

versier.

Die koek moes nie net

mooi wees nie, maar ook

baie lekker. Ons wou nie

afskeep nie, s Marietjie.

Koppe is bymekaargesit

om dit te beplan.

Ernie Halberg, n gemeen-

telid, het die raamwerk

gebou. Dit het sowat n

maand geduur. Toe het

Marietjie, Melanie Halberg

en Hantie Snyman binne

drie dae die koek aanme-

kaargeslaan en versier.

Ons het verlede Saterdag

tot 02:00 gewerk. Daarna het

ons, die vasbyters, die

eindproduk met n glasie

Nagmaalwyn gevier.

Koeke is in 82 oondpanne

gebak. Altesaam 24 koeke

(45 cm x 75 cm) is van n

bakkery bestel.

Daarby is onder meer

50 kg versiersuiker, sowat

600 eiers, 42 kg plastiekver-

siersel, 75 kg bruismeel en

25 kg margarien gebruik.

Ons het klein probleem-

pies gehad, maar dit was

baie pret, s Marietjie.

Gemeentelede en besoe-

kers het na hartelus aan die

koek gesmul.

Dit wat oorgebly het, is

aan skole en kinderhuise

geskenk.

A RIGHT TO SIGHT CAMPAIGN, in partnership with both the public and private sectors, was held at the

StHelena PrivateHospital inWelkom. This project enabled 12 patients to undergo successful cataract surgery.

A wide range of investors, partners, sponsors and medical specialists contributed towards the overall goal

bied word. Lourens was die hoof

leier vir 2014 en het Springbok

biathle en duathlon behaal. Hy is

ook in die Vrystaatspan vir Lands

drieplek in gr. 12 en het ook on

langs keuring gekry om volgende

jaar medies te studeer.

DIE eindronde van die eerste liga van die Curriebeker-rug-

bytoernooi tussen die Griffons en die Valke wat in Welkom

in die Noordwes-stadion gehou is, was n reusesukses. Die

paviljoen aan die westekant was stampvol en die aanmoedi-

ging wat die Perstruie van die skare ontvang het, sal lank

onthou word.

MICHAEL MOFOKENG can hear properly for the first time in his life. During his preschool

years, he complained about his hearing, but his parents did not think that it was a serious

problem.When the school called his parents in his gr. 5 year, there were no funds available

for a hearing test or hearing aids. Michael does scholastically well, despite his severe hea

ringloss. He lipreads. He wants to become an electrical engineer. His favourite subjects

are Science and Economics. Michael does not participate in sport as he has to learn very

hard to keepupwithhis hearingpeers. Hismother passedaway in 2009.Michael is determi
