Home Improvement Projects

With the cooler temperatures of fall many of us are energized to do home improvement projects.

Thank you to all the residents who joined us for our most recent Home Improvement Expo in October. At this years event we were joined by more than 20 local contractors who assist with landscaping improvements, pool upgrades, interior remodeling and painting. A special thank you for all the door prize contributions from our exhibitors. Nearly everyone who came went home with a prize, and two lucky owners took home new televisions! The money booth was especially popular, and four lucky individuals who completed the Expo Bingo got a 30 second chance to get rich. The booth was especially popular with our little people, but they were more interested in the monopoly money. All leftover money not claimed in the money booth was donated to the local charity Billy’s Place an organization offering support for grieving children and families. For more information check www.billysplace.me. For those of you who couldn’t join us, all exhibiting vendors are offering special discounted pricing for Vistancia residents. If you have been thinking about giving your home a boost for the holiday season, now is a great time to paint. Contact us at the office for a list of exhibiting paint

contractors and the special Vistancia only pricing. Fall is also an excellent time to replace missing landscape items. The cooler temperatures cause the plants to save their energy for a burst of growth in the spring. In conjunction with this year’s Garage Sale and Craft Fair, Caretaker Landscape will be on site with dozens of beautiful plants for sale. How convenient right here in your own neighborhood.

We wish you a safe and Happy Thanksgiving with your family, and hope to see you at all of our great events this month.

Summer is over, fall is in full swing and soon winter will be upon us. With winter comes the holidays, as you have

probably have noticed from all the holiday decorations marketed at the stores since

September. Residents are encouraged to celebrate and decorate! There are some restrictions to prevent any disturbances either by excessive light, sound or spectator traffic. Sorry Mr. Clark W. Griswold but you will not be able to put up your “250 strands of light... 100 individual bulbs per strand for a grand total of 25,000 imported Italian twinkle lights.” (National Lampoons Christmas Vacation)

Here is what the CC&R’s say about Holiday Decorations:Owners may display holiday decorations which are visible from neighboring property, only if the decorations are of the kinds normally displayed in single family residential neighborhoods, are of reasonable size and scope and do not disturb other owners and residents by excessive light or sound emission or by causing an unreasonable amount of spectator traffic. Holiday decorations may be displayed in season only from November 1 to January 31, during other times of the year, from one week before to one week after any nationally recognized holiday. (Article IV, Section 4.2, sub-section CC. Holiday Decorations)

Please have fun and be safe on your roofs.

According to Nate Nathan, President of one of the leading commercial and residential land brokerage firms, the

West Valley has some of the last available raw land in the region and at the rapid rate land is

being acquired; lot inventory will be sparse by 2017. Arizona is a pro-growth state and one of the most affordable places to live. Along with population and job growth ranking in the nation’s top 10, Vistancia plans to capitalize on the West Valley’s continued expansion with the evolution of the 550-acre commercial core at Vistancia.

Given the current development and future growth projections, the community’s next step is to support creating jobs for the northwest area. Around 93 percent of Peoria residents commute out of the city for work, we have an optimistic outlook about the Northwest Valley and during the next 10 to 20 years, we believe it’s going to be the metro area’s regional hub and leader in growth.

Already planned for the 550-acre commercial core is land that has been set aside for a future PUSD high school site and City of Peoria park. We are currently in communication with multiple companies considering the commercial core as a site for future development, but do not have anything official to announce at this time. The 550-acre commercial core is envisioned to eventually feature a wide range of uses including healthcare, office, higher education, retail, sports and entertainment, hospitality and urban residential.

Together, with the City of Peoria we have a vision and priority to develop the commercial core at Vistancia as a one-of-a-kind modern and unique mixed-use regional center. For more information about the commercial core at Vistancia visit www.vistancia.com or call 623-933-6233.

There is a gigantic reason to get excited about this year’s Harvest Daze. We have partnered with Vistancia Elementary School to literally double the fun. When we

say this will be a big event, we mean BIG! Here is a lengthy list of what kind of whopping amusement you will encounter: Let’s just start with this, when you enter you will be chanting Kong! At every turn there will be excitement including a hay ride, a petting zoo, 6-ring pony ride, spin cycle ride, too many bounce houses to list, photo booth, putt putt, ring toss, cake walk, face painting, fire truck, food trucks and live music performed by The Big Zephyr.

We would like your contribution to this enormous event. Your family, class, business, or group is invited to create a Scarecrow to be displayed at Scarecrow Alley, the entrance to our Harvest

Daze event. This is a contest. Residents will be the judges and the best Scarecrow designer(s) will win a prize. Scarecrow themes can be endless. Consider traditional, contemporary, or silly. Make it represent your business or school, celebrate your favorite sports team, maybe a book or movie character, be creative. If you would like to participate and enter your Scarecrow contact Neal at [email protected] or call 623.455.4401.Deliver your finished Scarecrow to the Association Office by Thursday, November 13.

The sheer size of this Fall Festival will be like nothing you have ever seen. Wristbands can be purchased for $5 at the Association Office. Wristbands purchased the day of the event will be $8 so be sure to pick them up ahead of time.

National Homemade Cookie Day

1st Place – Brandy RutledgeBanana Fosters Whoopee Cookie • 2C all purpose flour• 1 and 1/2 t baking powder• 1/2 t baking soda• 2 lightly beaten eggs• 1&1/2C mashed bananas (about 5 med bananas)• 1C sugar• 1/2C melted butterCombine flour, soda, and powder in a bowl, making a well (or hole) in the center. In Separate bowl, combine beaten eggs, bananas, sugar, and butter. Pour this mixture into the well of flour and beat until just moist. Drop batter by teaspoonfulls onto a greased cookie sheet, baking at 375 degrees until edges are crisp and golden. Cookies will be soft to the touch on the top. Remove from the cookie sheet onto waxed paper to cool while you prepare the butter cream frosting.

Butter cream Frosting• 1lb box confectioners sugar• 1/4 cup milk• 1t rum extract• 1t caramel extract • 1 stick sweet cream unsalted butterBeat ingredients until creamy, scraping bowl often.

Frost each cookie bottom with buttercream and add another cookie to top (as a sandwich cookie) you can add many variations to this by adding caramel sauce instead of caramel flavor and obviously using real rum for a special zip instead of flavoring. You can also make the buttercream thinner or thicker by modifying the amount of milk used. This recipe should yield you about 40 cookie patties (about 20 sandwiches) Refrigerate cookies as the butter cream will soften(and possibly spoil) in this az heat.

The Rose Family has lived in Vistancia since 2006. Their oldest daughter, Adalyne (Addy), was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when she was 2 years old. Type 1 Diabetes is

an autoimmune disease in which the body’s own immune system attacks the insulin producing cells in the pancreas. Over the past nine years, Addy has poked her fingertips more than 30,000 times in order to monitor her glucose levels. That’s roughly 10-12 times

a day, or about every 2-3 hours around the clock, day in and day out. With each finger poke, Addy and her parents must factor together an endless list of variables and then make a decision about insulin dosages. Addy wears an insulin pump 24/7 to infuse the insulin her body needs to survive.

Last July, Addy was selected for a rare opportunity to wear a closed-loop artificial pancreas for five days as part of a clinical trial while at summer camp. The Bionic Pancreas utilizes a continuous glucose monitor, a sophisticated algorithm embedded in an iPhone, and two infusion pumps – one for insulin (to lower glucose levels) and the other for glucagon (to raise glucose levels). The device senses glucose levels every five minutes and automatically makes a decision about how to respond 288 times a day with minimal input from the user. When compared to her current regimen of testing and responding to her numbers 10-12 times a day, 288 times a day makes a huge difference in overall glucose control! Improved control decreases the long-term risks of blindness, kidney failure, stroke, heart disease, and a myriad of other life-altering complications.

The results were outstanding. For the first time since her diagnosis, Addy was able to eat without thinking about how many carbohydrates were on her plate. She played without worrying about a low blood sugar. She slept without the fear of nocturnal hypoglycemia. For five days, Addy experienced a sense of freedom that has been unparalleled by any other technology that currently exists.

The Bionic Pancreas is on track to come to market in 2017. It will be a game-changer for Addy, and the millions of other people like her who are also living with Type 1 Diabetes. November is Diabetes Awareness Month, and the future looks bright! For more information on the Bionic Pancreas please visit http://sites.bu.edu/bionicpancreas/

W hile watching the Tour players at the Frys.com Open this past month I watched with great interest the

way they stroke putts on the practice putting green and they all had one thing in common;

how solidly they made contact with the golf ball. With this in mind I wanted to come up with a training device that any golfer could use to feel and hear what a solidly struck putt is like.

• First get a 2x4 stud and cut off a 12 inch piece, cut a few extra for your playing partners. Lay the stud down on the green about two feet from the hole lengthwise. The object is to make solid flush contact with the end of the board.

• Address the back of the stud so the putter face is flush against the end of the stud. Watch where your hands are when your putter face is flush. They should be ahead of the face at the impact position.

• Next, make your putting stroke back and through so you make contact with the stud so that you feel the face of the putter make solid contact. You should hear a click rather than a thud at impact. At impact you want to follow through so the stud is actually pushed toward the hole with your hands and

Be A Stud By Greg Ellis, General Manager, Trilogy Golf Club at Vistancia

arms doing the work. If you flip your wrists and the leading edge makes contact first the stud will rise off the ground and it will sound like a thud and the stud will not move as much. Just like a putt, the more solidly you contact the ball at impact the better ball will roll.

• Finally, after practicing with the stud, leave the stud on the ground and place a ball in line with the back of the board and stroke a putt to the hole. Once again, watch your hands through impact. Your hands must go past the ball prior to impact to strike the ball solidly, just like hitting the stud.

So be a stud and practice with the 2x4 and watch your putting improve. Remember, if you need help with this tip or any other, feel free to email me at [email protected] or call me for a lesson at 623.328.5107.

Filling: Add cream cheese to a mixing bowl and mix on low speed. Add white chocolate and eggs to cream cheese and mix on low speed for an additional minute. Add the pumpkin purée, brandy, spices and syrup to mixture and mix on low speed. Add batter to prepared pan. Place cheesecake in pre-heated oven for one hour. Turn oven off and leave cheesecake in oven for 1 more hour to prevent the cheesecake from cracking. Remove cheesecake from oven and cool to room temperature. Once cool, place cheesecake in refrigerator overnight.

Whipped Cream: Add heavy cream and maple syrup to mixing bowl. Whip on high speed until cream begins to form. Add powdered sugar and slowly mix in on low speed until all powdered sugar is incorporated. Serve cheesecake chilled with a dollop of whipped cream. Recipe serves approximately 12.
