Home Improvement Projects

It is hard to believe that another year is drawing to a close. It looks like my Mother was right, the older we get, the faster time

flies. At the end of each year, in the midst of the holiday season, we have the opportunity to look back and be thankful for the many good times shared with family and friends. Thank you Vistancia for the memories we have made in our first year together. As we celebrate, during this busy time of year, I want to wish you and your loved ones health, happiness and prosperity in the coming year.

Although we are sad to say goodbye to our Assistant Lifestyle Director, Devin Haggerty, we are excited for her new opportunity at a CCMC managed community in Texas. We will miss her smile and enthusiasm, all the while knowing what great success she will have in her new role. With her departure, we welcome a new smiling face to the Vistancia team. Please join me in welcoming Rudy Bogojevich! Rudy comes to Vistancia from a neighboring CCMC community bringing lots of energy and new ideas for our lifestyle program. When you stop by to say hello, ask our elf on the shelf how he feels about opera.

Welcome to Vistancia!

Dogs bark to communicate. If your dog barks continually, annoying you and/or your neighbors, then you

need to determine why he is barking before you can apply a solution. Below are the types

of barking that can affect your dog and solutions to correct the unwanted behavior that we have learned from an accredited pet trainer.

Territorial barking warns people or animals that they are in the dog’s perceived territory. Examples include children walking by on their way to school, delivery people, loose animals or even your next door neighbor in their own yard. As the children pass and walk away or the delivery person leaves after the delivery, the dog sees his barking as a victory and scared off the intruder, thus reinforcing the behavior.

Solution: Change the dogs environment or routine so that he is not exposed to the things that cause him to bark. You may need to modify your yard in some way to decrease his exposure to the things that trigger the barking. Proper socialization will also help with this problem as well.

Frustration barking occurs when the dog is prevented from engaging in behavior that he wants. He may start barking at a cat atop the fence that he can’t reach or children across the street playing that he wants to join. This barking is often accompanied by pawing at restraints, jumping up, pacing or circling.

Solution: Identify the source of his frustration, modify the environment to eliminate the frustration and enrich his environment.

Protective barking is triggered when someone moves toward a person or animal to whom he is attached.

Defensive barking occurs when dogs feel threatened by other animals, people or noises. Dogs bark defensively when they see or hear neighbors in adjacent yards or in response to things they perceive as threatening.

Solution: Encourage and reinforce quiet behavior. The instant he starts barking, call him to you. Make him sit, lay down or perform a trick he knows. Have him do this several times. Reward him with treats and praise. Over time his automatic response will be to come to you to see what you want him to do to get the treat, rather than barking. Proper socialization will also help.

Excitement barking frequently occurs when you return home or when the dog sees or hears someone he knows. You reinforce this barking by paying attention to the dog and acting excited yourself.

Playful barking covers a variety of different noises when he is playing, including barking, yelping, whining and growling. These sounds are made to get others to play and can be a problem when two dogs are together or if trying to get a neighbor’s dog to play.

Solution: Do not reinforce this behavior by paying attention to your dog, ignore him and reward the quiet behavior. House dogs separately if cause by two family dogs playing. Proper socialization.

Attention getting barking occurs when he is not getting attention from people or other animals. They want attention when there needs are not being met. They are social animals and not adapted to environments with little social contact.

Solution: Enrich his environment and dedicate at least 30 minutes, twice a day, to do things with your dog. Walking, playing, training and socialization are good. Make sure he has shelter from heat/cold, plenty of food and water.

Fear barking occurs if the dog is afraid of something like thunderstorms, fireworks or other loud noises such as garbage trucks and sirens. If he has several frightening episodes in the same location such as the back yard, his fear may generalize and he may bark in the backyard even if the original fear-eliciting stimulus isn’t present.

Solution: Identify the cause of fear, modify the environment to minimize exposure to the stimulus. Bark collars will not help with this type of barking and are not appropriate with this type of dog.

Separation Anxiety barking is a specific type of fear motivated barking. Dogs are social animals and can become anxious or even panicked when separated from their owners or people to whom they are attached. Symptoms include excessive barking, destructiveness, attempts to escape or house soiling.

Solution: Treatment for separation anxiety includes behavior modification to help your dog become more tolerant and relaxed when left alone. You need to change your routine when you leave the house, be low key when you leave and not be lavishing your dog when you go. Do not leave for extended periods and gradually work up to longer periods of time of being away. Upon return, do not excite the dog and allow for him to relax. Start with 30 seconds of being gone before returning. Then try a minute, then two, five, 10, 30 and up to an hour. As you get be gone for longer periods, it will be easier to extend the time so you will be able to be gone for a whole work day. It is time consuming but it is for your dogs health as well as your neighbors.

Group barking may occur when others dogs join one who started the barking. This is the neighborhood bark fest.

Solution: Modify your his environment to minimize exposure to other dogs.

The words “Cut Back” may seem harsh, however when implemented correctly cut backs can greatly increase the health of plants. Constantly trimming plants can promote

a round manicured look, but this practice can be very hard on the overall health of the plants.

A plant’s life cycle is as follows: first it is in seed form, then it is sowed, it establishes itself, creates new vegetation for photosynthesis (energy), uses the stored energy to produce flowers and create seeds and then drops them for continued propagation. Every time a plant is trimmed it starts this process over and over again. The plant has to continually try to produce new growth, new flowers and new seed. This takes large amounts of stored energy (carbohydrates) and water from the plant, which in turn makes each plant work harder at surviving. Completing one large trimming during the plants dormancy allows for continued growth throughout the summer, with possibly no trimming being needed. Yearly trimming allows the plant to go through its entire cycle before it is trimmed again. Some plants will bloom several times in a year without trimming. With proper rejuvenation cut backs this allows the plant to spend less time trying to survive and it can go through its natural cycle providing a continued vibrant color each year.

Care To Know - Plants that are sheared every month create what is called a, “witches broom.” When a plant stem is cut, it never grows from the same point. The old growth point dies back and new growth springs up from dormant buds along the sides of the stem. This splitting happens every time the plant is trimmed. If you trim it enough, you can split the growth point several times. These new growth points, now multiplied, begin to interweave themselves creating a mat or broom like thickness that prevents sunlight from penetrating through. With sunlight blocked, leaves only form on the out layers of the stems, reducing a plants ability to create food.

Since the majority of plants growth happens throughout the summer months, we try to complete our trimming during the

winter months. Trimming usually starts during late November and should be completed by the end of April. Any plants that are frost susceptible should be cut back after February 15, this is considered the date of last possible frost.

Remember it is always best to have a plan. If you have any questions, please ask you Caretaker Professional.

DIY Milk Bottle Reindeer By Vanessa Rodriguez Coppola of www.SeeVanessaCraft.com

S ave your old Frappuccino bottles or buy actual milk bottles (which can be found at your local craft store) to make DIY milk bottle reindeer. I filled my bottles with chocolate malt

balls, but anything brown will work. Add a little tag and it becomes an instant and super easy gift for teachers, neighbors and more!

Materials• Clean Frappuccino Bottles• Brown Pipe Cleaners (2 per bottle)• Googly Eyes (2 per bottle)• Small Red Pom Poms (1 per bottle)• Hot Glue Gun• Malt Balls (or another brown treat)

Instructions: Hot glue 2 googly eyes and 1 red pom pom to the front of the Frappuccino bottle. Twist a brown pipe cleaner around the rim and then twist half a pipe cleaner around the ends, trimming off excess to look like antlers. Fill the bottle with chocolate malt balls, chocolate milk or another brown treat.

Jake Monday is this month’s Employee Spotlight. After starting out as Community Patrol in Vistancia in 2010, he was promoted to Maintenance Coordinator in March of 2012.

His eye for detail and his strong work ethic made him the perfect candidate to take over the Maintenance Coordinator position. Jake can be found assisting Michael Brooks, our Maintenance Director with projects throughout the community, maintaining the buildings at the Mountain Vista Club and assisting the Lifestyle department with setup of all the major events.

Born and raised in North Phoenix, Jake graduated from Greenway High School in 2010. From an early age he loved to tear things apart to figure out how they worked. He learned how to fix a flat tire on a bike before most kids knew how to ride a bike. When he was fifteen years old, without any experience, he started working on a 1967 Ford-100 that his Dad had owned since he was in high school. By Jake’s 16th birthday the truck was running like new.

When he isn’t spending his weekends helping with events, helping his friends move, or working on a buddy’s car, Jake enjoys going to country concerts, riding his Harley all over the state, taking trips to his family cabin in Heber and of course cheering on the Green Bay Packers every Sunday.

He is our Jake of all trades and Vistancia is fortunate to have him be apart of this wonderful community.

Meet Jake Monday

Can you guess who the next Employee Spotlight

will be about in next month’s issue?

O ne of the readers of requested this month’s tip. 95% of all golfers cannot or do not line up to hit the ball to their

target. I will watch them practicing and ask one simple question; “where are you trying

to hit the ball?” The answer to me is “I want to hit it out there.” Usually out there is a 100 yard wide practice area. Of the three swing fundamentals, “alignment” is the key to getting the golf ball to go where you want. Practice the following and you will see your going toward the target intentionally:

• During a Tour players’ pre-shot routine you will see them making sure that they pick an intended target to begin their set-up to hit the ball toward the primary target. Usually they will find a spot about six to twelve inches ahead of the ball in line with their target. Next they will draw an imaginary line through the ball and intended spot on the ground.

• Now that the line of flight has been determined, continue with your set-up and address to the golf ball. The club face will be directly on the line of your intended path. Your feet should be lined up on a parallel line target line. This is crucial. If your feet are at your target and the club is at your target the lines will converge upon each other and this will lead to a virtual closed

clubface at impact. With your feet on the proper line, make sure that your knees, hips and shoulders are on the same line as your feet. When practicing, lay clubs on the ground to give you a better visual of this alignment process.

• Finally, when you swing the club, make sure that the club stays long and low on the back swing on the imaginary extended line. When making the downward swing, the hips rotate through first and allow the club to swing back down on the same path and toward the target. Remember to finish the swing with your belt buckle pointing to your intended target. Any swing short of that may not provide the intended results
