A SHOCKING discovery wasmade in an open veld inSeemeeupark on Monday (18/05).

Welkom resident AlexanderBongani was walking throughthe park between Lindsay andStarford Road when he saw atransparent plastic bag withwhat seemed to be the tiny bodyof a baby inside.

Bongani told Vista he hadbeen so shocked and upset, thathe had at first fled the scene.But he then stopped and calledthe police, as well as emergencyservices.

The body of a baby boy withthe placenta still intact wasfound in the plastic bag.

Marchant Jacobs, a paramedicwith the Department of Health,confirmed to Vista that the babyhad already been dead whenemergency services arrived atthe scene.

The police are investigating acase of concealment of birth.

It is alleged that a woman andlater a man were seen in thearea shortly before the body wasdiscovered. The man hurriedfrom the scene when the policeand ambulance arrived.) New-born babies represent

about 65% of the abandonedchildren in South Africa.

Only about a third (of aban-doned new-borns) survives beingleft unprotected in places suchas toilets, the open veld, dust-bins and even dumping sites.

THE Matjhabeng Municipality hasdisconnected the electricity supply to 72public schools in the area because theirelectricity accounts are in arrears.According to the municipality, a total

of 79 public schools in the area owe themunicipality about R11 million inoverdue fees.“Considering that the municipality

owes Eskom R600 million, the R11 milli-on owed by public schools is reallyminimal,” says David van Vuuren, theDA’s chief whip in the Free Statelegislature.“The provincial Department of Public

Works is responsible for the payment ofbulk services to these no-fee schools andit has failed to make timely payments.”

According to Sam Mashinini, PublicWorks MEC, the department has ashortfall of more than R265 million forthe payment of municipal servicesacross the province.Maditse Seoke, head of the Free State

Public Works Department, said he wasnot aware of the electricity supply tothe schools being cut.“Until now the municipalities have

been patient, because they knew thebills would be paid eventually,” saidLeona Kleynhans, member of theprovincial legislature (MPL) andmember of the portfolio committee onpublic works.“But their own debt is running into

the millions, with the result that theyare under pressure to get the moneyowed to them.”

ESKOM Wednesday (20/05) confirmed to theMatjhabeng Ratepayers Organisation thatthe municipality’s payment plan has beensubmitted to Eskom and accepted.The debt of R601 million will be paid to

Eskom over a period of 30 months, startingthis month. Eskom said it would only goahead with the interruptions if the munici-

pality did not honour the agreement.Although Eskom is aware of the inconve-

nience caused to individual households, theentity said it could not separate goodpayers from bad players when electricitywas supplied in bulk.Eskom also urged the municipality to

avoid such a situation.

Die gee van name aan hierdiestrate moet dus voorkeur geniet bo dieverandering van bestaande straatname.Die verandering van straatname en die

gepaardgaande uitwerking daarvan opskole, instellings, padaanwysings, huise enondernemings, gaan miljoene kos.Hierdie koste word gedra deur diegene

wat belasting betaal – dit is daardie deelvan die inwoners wat juis nie ten gunstevan die naamsverandering is of dit aange-vra het nie. diate course and are close tocompleting the advanced course,which is another ten week course.These women will be using their

Summer Gap as a facilitator, whileTersia is off to work on a cruiseship.

eienaar van vyf plasies en het hy’n groot verskeidenheid wild – vanskilpaaie tot kameelperde. Al watkort is die Groot Vyf.Inus se vrou, Delia, sê die plasie,

Del-Ingwe, wat Gees van dieLuiperd beteken, is 75 ha groot.“Toe ons dit gekoop het, was dit

net ’n stukkie swart afgebrandebos, ’n regte oerwoud.”Sy self het gehelp om takke af te

saag om plek vir ’n paadjie temaak.“ ’n Landmeter het die grens

afgebaken. Ons het grensdradegespan en vir water geboor.Ongelukkig is die enigste boorgat

ver van waar ons die huis woubou. Ons moes water met drommeaanry.”Die eerste wild wat die Van

Aswegens gekoop het, was tienspringbokke, drie gemsbokke envyf takbokke. Nou is daar ondermeer 15 wildboksoorte, kameel-perde, sebras, skilpaaie, ’n nagaap,volstruise, vlakvarke, emoes,ouvolk, ystervarke en plaasdiere.Van die wild moes al uitgedun

word.Die eerste boorgat wat naby die

huis geboor is, was 84 m diep. Ditis nou ’n netjiese long drop.Aanvanklik is drie rondawels

opgesit waar hulle gebly het.“Ons het toe oor ’n huis begin

droom.“Ons het alles so ontwerp dat

die huis in die somer koel en indie winter warm is. Ons het diehuis self gebou.”Die Van Aswegens het later nog

vier plase in die omgewinggekoop.

Delia het ’n spogtuin. In haarroostuin is sowat 100 verskillenderose en sy ken elkeen se naam.Sy het ook ’n groentetuin

aangelê en daar is verskeievrugtebome.Die verhitte swembad is ’n

aanwins. Ná ’n motorongeluksukkel Delia met ’n rugprobleemen swem sy gereeld.Inus was van 2007 tot 2009 die

Suid-Afrikaanse siertuigkampioen.Twee sebras het hulself al as die

oppassers van die klein kameel-perdjies aangestel. Die ma’s vandie kameelperdjies aanvaar ditmaar.Gelukkig laat die sebras darem

toe dat die kleintjies aan hul ma’ssuip.Inus boer ook met mielies.Iets wat besoekers op die plaas

se verbeelding aangryp, is ’nvolstruis wat op die tuinier Slow(Joseph Swart) verlief is. Wanneerhy hom sien, voer hy ’n liefdes-dans met mening uit.
