VISTA DEL SOLCOMMUNITY UPDATE
Proudly serving the residents of the Vista Del Sol community.
A MESSAGE FROM THE VDS TEAMWinter is here! Well, almost. The holiday season has already begun for sure. Along with the stresses of trying to find the perfect gifts for loved ones and planning out your new year’s resolutions, it is starting to get a little chilly in the desert! Vista Del Sol can help with all your holiday hiccups. Stop by the community center for a warm cup of joe or tea while sitting next to the fireplace doing some online shopping. If you are planning on traveling for the holidays, make sure to stop by the office to fill out an extended absence form. We would also like to remind you that if you are planning to hang Christmas lights or decorations outside, please avoid hanging them on the roof tops and second levels of your home. We wish everyone a happy and safe Holiday Season!
For those staying here, we have wonderful events planned for our residents. Santa and his helpers will be coming to the Community Center December 17th from 5pm to 7pm! Stop by between those times for free professional photos with Santa for the first 100 people. We will have a pasta dinner, crafts and so much more. This is an event that will leave you jolly!

• In the winter, set your thermostat at 60 degrees Fahrenheit when you are sleeping or away. Set the thermostat to 68 degrees Fahrenheit when you are at home. This will save 10 percent or more on your heating bills every winter.• The sun’s energy can have a noticeable effect on the temperature in your home, especially from windows facing south and west. Keep window shades and drapes open during winter months to let in the sun’s radiant heat.• Don’t depend on thermostat settings; go by your own comfort. Keep the temperature where you are comfortable wearing a light sweater.• When the house is cold, don’t “overset” the thermostat for temperature recovery. The house won’t heat any faster.• Use ceiling fans to circulate warm air - reversible ceiling fans are best, as they can circulate warm air without passing a breeze over your skin.• Lowering the thermostat by just one degree Fahrenheit can reduce energy use by 3 percent.• If you are going out of town for the holidays, please unplug your decorative lights and unplug any appliances you are not using. TVs and clocks are really the only things that need to remain plugged in.
JANUARY: Proper Use of Heaters
• Use real dishes and flatware, instead of serving food on paper or Styrofoam at holiday parties. If there aren’t enough to go around, use recycled paper products, or use plastic plates and cups, which can be washed and used over and over again. Cheap cloth napkins are also a great alternative and a bit fancier. Choose darker colors when buying for staining. This can become a year round ritual saving you green and living green.• Send an e-card with a photo of your family and a holiday wish, or an e-vite if you are hosting a party, instead of wasting paper (and stamps!) on traditional greeting cards. • Reduce wrapping by making it part of the present. Put gifts in a basket, terra cotta garden pot, or woven bag. Use ribbon to tie a bow on larger presents.• Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, Americans throw away a million EXTRA tons [900,000 metric tons] of garbage each week, including holiday wrapping and packaging.• If every family reused just 2 feet of holiday ribbon, the 38,000 miles of ribbon saved could tie a bow around the entire planet.• According to one U.S. Department of Energy study, if everyone replaced their conventional holiday light strings with LEDs, at least two billion kilowatt-hours of electricity could be saved in a month. The savings would be enough to power 200,000 homes for a year.
