A total of $83,815.01 was transferred by UB to Silliman University. This amount represented the earnings for fiscal year 2012 – 2013 from the different Endowment grants held in trust by UB. The different endowments are for student scholarships, faculty scholarships and professorial chairs. UB also receives designated grants from alumni and friends of Silliman University. The designated grants are transferred to Silliman

University on a monthly basis.

DEpArTMENT of forEIgN AffAIrS (DfA) SECrETAry ALBErT dEL roSArIo engaged an audience of around 800 students and teachers as he discussed the country’s foreign policy at a special convocation held June 18, 2013 at the Claire Isabel Mcgill Luce Auditorium. The convocation, conducted under the general Education Integrative Lecture Series and televised live to some 20,000 subscribers of a local cable station, marked the opening of School Year 2013-2014.

In his speech, the Secretary highlighted the three main priorities of the philippines’ foreign policy: promotion of national security, promotion of economic diplomacy and protection of overseas filipino workers. He emphasized how all three reflect the agenda of the philippine government under president Benigno Aquino III, whom he described as the architect of the country’s foreign policy.

Internationally acclaimed theatre actor and outstanding Sillimanian Mr. rUFINo “jUNIx” INoCIAN shared his experience as a filipino performer abroad, during the Albert faurot Lecture Series for Culture and the Arts held November 23, 2013 at the Cyber Lecture Hall.

Mr. Inocian, who talked about “A Life in the Theatre”, narrated how he established a name for himself out of a sheer passion for theatre and a sense of pride as a filipino. He also let his audience, composed mostly of college students, on the challenges that he went through as an artist from Asia working with several nationalities on the international stage. He also presented some videos of his performances in theatre, film and commercials.

He was on campus also as a guest of alumnus Mr. Mariano Lao, benefactor of the Lina rabor Scholarship at the High School Department and speaker of the Department’s Honors Day Convocation.

The story reading activity was part of the week-long celebration of the Annual Book fair running from September 2 to 6, 2013 at the robert B. and Metta J. Silliman Library.

The 4Th ELEMENTS NATIoNAL SINGING-SoNGWrITING CAMp was held November 17 to 21, 2013.Elements is a national camp organized by the Tao foundation, and held annually in Dumaguete with the support of the College of performing and visual Arts of Silliman University. It is being run by renowned music composer maestro ryan Cayabyab, who also serves as a visiting professor at Silliman.

This year’s team of mentors was composed of artists Joey Ayala, Jim paredes, gabby Alipe of Urbandub, Ebe Dancel, gloc-9, Jungee Marcelo, Jazz Nicolas of Itchyworms, Jay Contreras of kamikazee, raimund Marasigan, gary granada, Aia de Leon, Jay Durias, Christina Luna, Aiza Seguerra and Audie gemora.The Camp gathers 60 youth – 30 singers and 30 music composers – in a stay-in personalized training that prepares them for the music industry. one of the participants this year is a sophomore student

SALA shared his reflection and insights on the topic, “The Decisions of Life and How to find the Will of god for Them” at the Claire Isabel Mcgill Luce Auditorium last february 4, 2014.He also gave an inspirational talk to students in the afternoon of february 3 at the Silliman University Church.Dr. Sala authored 40 inspirational books. He also maintains a regular slot, “guidelines - A five-Minute Commentary on Living”, which is translated in over 15 languages and broadcasted over a thousand


radio stations worldwide.

Miss Universe 1973 and Ballet philippines president MS MArGIE MorAN-FLoIrENdo graced Ballet philippines’ benefit production on March 2, 2014 at the Claire Isabel Mcgill Luce Auditorium.

The benefit concert dubbed the “Art of Dance”, was geared towards raising funds for the victims of typhoon Yolanda as part of the University’s CCrp. It also culminated the three-night performance of Ballet philippines at the Luce and concluded the 51st Cultural Season of Silliman University.

Tipon 2013Close to 300 alumni from North America, Canada and other parts of the world registered for the first-ever Tipon Silliman 2013 hosted outside its usual rotation. They added to the hundreds of returning alumni and guests that visited Silliman for the annual founders Day.

Tipon is a bi-annual gathering of alumni and friends, organized by the Silliman University Alumni Council of North America. Hosting moves around the alumni chapters in different states – Chicago (2001), New Jersey (2003), California (2005), Canada (2007) florida (2009) and Alaska (2011).

During Tipon 2011 held in Alaska, the group decided to bring the next Tipon to Silliman, in a grand reunion of schoolmates and friends. The celebrations, which ran from August 21 to 25, lined up a series of activities for alumni and non-Sillimanians alike – an opening dinner overlooking Dumaguete, fun events and guided tours, formal meetings, 12th SUACoNA gala dinner, Sunday service at the Silliman University Church and

a special cultural performance at the Claire Isabel Mcgill Luce Auditorium dubbed Handulantaw.

The celebration’s theme this year was “one god, one World, one Silliman!”

Tipon Silliman 2013 was organized by a core group composed of Tipon co-chairs Mrs. Betsy Merto-Engle, president of the Silliman University Alumni Association of Alaska, and Dr. Betsy Joy B. Tan, vice president for Academic Affairs of Silliman University; Dr. gideon Alegado, SUACoNA Chairman, and local coordinator prof. Jocelyn S. Dela Cruz, who was the University’s past Director of Alumni and External Affairs.

Center for Tropical Conservation StudiesThe Center continues to conduct researches independently and through collaborative efforts with other departments and institutions of the University. This year, CenTrop was part of the following five researches: 1. The physico-chemical, hydrological, Biological and Socio-Economic Assessment of the Binalbagan river in Negros Island,


which is funded by the foundation for the philippine Environment (fpE) and the final report was submitted last April 2014.

2. The Annual Environmental Monitoring of Bayawan City Wastewater Facilities, in partnership with the LgU of Bayawan City conducted by the reseach Apprenticeship (oJT) students enrolled in Biology 66S during the summer term of SY 2013-2014. This endeavor boosts the students’ confidence in handling actual research and conducting fieldwork and data gathering activities since the results will be considered by the LgU as credible scientific data and material to support LgU thrusts and projects in environmental sanitation and monitoring.

3. The Coral reef Carrying-capacity Monitoring Study in panglao Island Bohol which is spearheaded by the SUAkCrEM. Although, the study departs from the terrestrial area of specialization of CenTrop, the marine environment is still part of tropical ecosystems, hence the Center’s participation and capabilities is an important part of the study.

4. The development of a Conservation program for the Irrawaddy dolphins (orcaella Brevirostris) in the Visayas in Line with the Coral Triangle Initiative National plan of Action, which is funded by the Deutsche gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (gIZ). The final report was submitted last february 2014.

5. The protected Area Management Enhancement (pAME) in the philippines, regions VI, VII, and VIII which is also funded by the Deutsche gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammernarbeit (gIZ). The final report was submitted last November 2013.

CenTrop has also continued in its endeavor to prepare and write relevant research publications. Being the terrestrial research arm of the Biology Department, new studies are being explored in the fields of molecular biology, biodiversity conservation and management, climate change, curriculum development in the biological sciences for high school, information education and communication advocacies as well as in the captive breeding

management. The following are some of the research publications submitted this year:

5. physico-chemical, Hydrological, Biological, and Socio-Economic Assessment of the Binalbagan river in Negros Island, philippines

The Center’s continued advocacy for conservation and environmental awareness is one of the reasons why it was invited to sit in the protected Area Management Board (pAMB) of the Balinsasayao Twin Lakes and Natural park (BTLNp). It is one of the non-government organizations involved in the establishment of the park as a protected area. Aside from attending the regular pAMB meetings, the Center is part of the policy-making and permit-granting body of the BTLNp and its buffer zones.

Another area of the Center’s advocacy is the continuing operation of the University’s A.Y. reyes Zoological and Botanical garden. The garden is a favored destination of students and tourists seeking information on our country’s bio-diversity and the conservation efforts being done towards protecting its natural resources, especially that of Negros Island. This year, a total of 5,792 individuals visited


Negros occidental; and the foundation for the philippine Environment.

STACy dANIKA S. ALCANTArA, who obtained her degree in Mass Communication summa cum laude in 2009,

led this year’s passers of the foreign Service Examinations (fSE) of the Department of foreign Affairs. The fSE is one of the toughest exams administered to those aspiring to become diplomats. for this year, there were only 30 examiners.

Students were exposed to the various terrestrial field research methods and were able to experience actual living conditions of researchers in the tropical forests and terrestrial habitats.The captive breeding program of the Center continues this year with six (6) species of mammals and the three (3) species of birds. The single remaining individual of the philippine freshwater Crocodile in the garden remains as an educational instrument for the Center’s environmental education and advocacy program. There was also an increase in the population of the visayan Spotted Deer; the visayan Warty pig; the Negros Bleeding Heart pigeons; and the visayan Tarictic Hornbill.

With the continued increase in the population of the visayan Spotted Deer at the garden, the Center is now planning to expand its area with the University’s acquisition of a 19 hectare lot in palinpinon, valencia Negros oriental. Its most recent development was the involvement of Bristol Conservation and Science foundation (BCSf) and Bristol Zoological gardens of the United kingdom in the planning as well as in the implementation of the proposed expansion.The Center has also fostered partnerships and linkages with the provincial Environment and Natural resources office (pENro) in Negros oriental; the Bristol Zoological gardens and Bristol Conservation and Science foundation of the United kingdom; LgUs of Binalbagan, Moises padilla, and Isabela in
