Magazine. Both publications are effective and

INFORMATIVE EDITORIALS Feature editorials focus on Maui lifestyle, history, services and guides to unique places and things to do while on Maui.
ISLAND-WIDE MAPS Detailed Island maps lead visitors directly to our advertisers.
DINING, ACTIVITY & SHOPPING REVIEWSAlphabetical directory listings assist visitors in making their dining, activities, and shopping choices with informative reviews and at-a-glance information such as hours of operation, location and reservation numbers.
A carefully sculpted mound of
ice as soft and fluffy as newly fallen snow is drenched in tropical fruit-flavored syrup, drizzled with creamy sweetened con-densed milk, and served with a spoon in a cone-shaped cup. Sound heavenly? It is. It’s Hawaiian shave ice—the Islands’ quintessential frozen sweet treat.
Every state has its must-try edible: Maine lobster roll, Georgia peach pie, Florida’s conch chowder. In Hawai‘i, it’s shave ice. But make sure you don’t put a “d” at the end of “shave,” or you’ll be immediately identified as a mea kipa (traveler). And do remember…shave ice is not the same as a snow cone. By any means.
Shave ice’s origin is in Japan, where it’s called kakigori, and has been in existence since the 11th century when fro-
zen blocks of ice from lakes were preserved in the winter, then finely shaved and
served with sweet syrup to Japanese aristocracy in the summer. Once ice became widely available in the 19th century, kakigori was introduced to the general public. Nowadays, kakigori is sold virtu-ally everywhere in Japan during
the hot summer months. Although using electric shavers is now the
technique of choice, many Japanese street vendors still hand shave blocks
of ice to produce kakigori. In fact, it was Japanese laborers, imported to Hawai‘i in the
mid-1800s to work on the burgeoning sugarcane plantations, who introduced their traditional dessert to the Islands. During their breaks, these workers carefully shaved ice off a large block with their machetes and drenched it with cane syrup or fruit juice, for a cool respite from the relentless sun. Once these Japanese immigrants began moving away from planta-
by Heidi Pooltion life, many established family-owned grocery stores and snack shops offering, among other things, shave ice.
The reason there’s no “d” on “shave” also dates back to the plantation era. Out of a need for so many different cultures to communicate with one another, Hawaiian Creole English (a.k.a. Hawaiian Pidgin) emerged as a common language that’s still spoken today in the Islands. One of the characteristics of Hawaiian Creole is the dropping of “superfluous” letters and even syllables. In addition to “shave ice,” while visiting Hawai‘i you’ll also see other examples like “smoke meat.”
There are myriad flavors to choose from when ordering shave ice.
You can select just one, or try a combination (usually up to three). Popular tropical es-sences are coconut, guava, liliko‘i (passion fruit), lychee, and mango. For an extra kick of sweetness, try a scoop
of ice cream or azuki (sweet red bean) paste at the bottom.
And that drizzle of sweetened condensed milk on top? It’s called a
“snow cap,” and it’s quite simply divine.Shave ice was even the inspira-
tion for a popular song from 1981. With its decidedly disco beat, “Shave Ice,” sung by Loyal Garner, was a surprise hit for the O‘ahu-born performer.
“Love it when you hear them say / that it hits the spot / love to try it every way / hey, hey, why not?” Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice is featured as “Best Shave Ice on Maui.” Check out their review on page 25, and their ad on page 40. YUM!

A Honolua - Mokule‘ia Bays Marine Life Conservation District - Although Honolua Bay is world-famous for surfing, the calm, clear waters of the protected marine reserve offer some of the finest snorkeling around Maui. Mokule‘ia’s golden sand beach and bay are popular for playing and swimming.
B Napili Bay - One of the most scenic bays on Maui, with golden sand and exceptional snorkeling.
C Ka‘anapali (Dig-Me) Beach to Black Rock -
Three miles of beautiful golden sand and beautiful people with lots of ocean activities.
D Hanakao‘o (Canoe) Beach Park - Outrigger canoe clubs meet here for paddling; nice black sand beach with a lifeguard tower.
E Launiupoko Beach Park - Black sand, shady lawns, and a kids’ swimming pond.
From spectacular sunsets to pristine beaches and clear aquamarine water, the beaches of Maui provide a joyful setting for playing, swimming, relaxing and gazing. Here’s a listing of some of the best beaches along Maui’s shores.
For locations, please see corresponding letters on maps.
F Ho‘okipa Beach - One of the best windsurfing beaches in the world! Great place to watch the professionals.
G Sugar Beach - Sugary white sand (hence the name) great for sunning, swimming and windsurfing.
H Kama‘ole Beaches I, II, & III - More park than beach, but great for swimming, and fun for picnics and parties.
I Keawakapu Beach - Small white sand beach, a favorite of locals.
J Ulua Beach - Extraordinary snorkeling; beautiful beach.
K Wailea Beach - This exquisite stretch of beach runs along the ocean from the Grand Wailea Resort to the Four Seasons Resort. Swimming, sunning and people watching.
L Makena’s Big & Little Beaches - Gorgeous stretches of white sand and crystal water. Exercise caution when waves are big, as break is shallow. Little Beach is a clothing optional (unofficially) small cove just around the rocks from Big Beach.
Remember to bring sunscreen, water, and never turn your back on the ocean. Play Safe!
The diversity of climate and breathtaking scenery
make the beautiful islands of Maui and Lana‘i
a prized destination for golf lovers world-wide.

A Star is born… Gourmet noodle restaurants are the lat-est culinary rage and STAR NOODLE takes the spotlight. Traditional Asian noodles and Asian specialties are offered in a sleek, modern, elegant and casual ambiance with an emphasis on natural wood and stone. Fresh house-made noodles, small plates and desserts are prepared daily. The extensive menu includes a variety of signature noodle dishes, Steamed Pork Buns, Miso Salmon, ‘Ahi Avocado, Sizzling Ribeye, Shrimp Tempura and much more. Uniquely located at the top of the Lahaina Industrial Area. Try something differ-ent, delicious, affordable and fun. 808-667-5400
BEST: PIES • page 37
Decadent and sinfully deli-cious, the pies at LEODA’S KITCHEN & PIE SHOP are true perfection. Their specialty pies include a classic Banana Cream, Chocolate Caramel, Apple Crumb, Fresh Fruit and much more, including a few hand held pies. You’ll want to try them all! For those in the mood for savory, there’s also a Meat
‘n’ Potatoes and a traditional Chicken Pot Pie. Along with the pies, they bake four different types of bread daily for hearty deli-style sandwiches, burgers and hotdogs. With 90% of the products farmed and raised on Maui, Leoda’s is dedicated to using the freshest ingredients possible. Open daily for break-fast, lunch and dinner from 7am to 8pm. 808-662-3600
BEST: PIZZA • page 38
Located upstairs in the former home of the leg-endary Blue Max, this landmark restaurant is a true local favorite. Great views of the ocean and Lahaina Harbor combined with their award-winning pizza make LAHAINA PIZZA COMPANY a fun spot to be (kids love this place!). Their pastas, sandwiches and signature salads
are also worth consideration. Perhaps the best Mai Tais and Buffalo Wings on Maui add to the very affordable, good-time, casual atmosphere. 808-661-0700
BEST: SEAFOOD • page 39
Famed Chef Mark Ellman and his wife Judy, the magicians behind several popular Maui restaurants, have created yet another dining sensation with HONU SEAFOOD & PIZZA. Situated right on the ocean (next door to their Frida’s Mexican Beach House) with spectacu-lar sunsets and surf-ing turtles, Chef Mark and Judy have a well-deserved reputation for creating what is missing on our little slice of Paradise. Well sourced produce from local farmers, the freshest seafood from where we live, and eclectic recipes found nowhere else. You may feel like you are in the heart of San Francisco or maybe New York, but no, you are at a Mark and Judy Ellman restaurant at ocean’s edge on Maui. Free Valet parking. Reservations suggested. 808-667-9390
BEST: SHAVE ICE • page 40
There’s no shortage of shave ice on Maui. But, if you’re planning on hav-ing one, why not have THE BEST? As they say at Ululani’s, “All Shave Ice Is NOT Created Equal.” This is a must-do when in Hawai‘i. Be sure to stop into one of ULULANI’S HAWAIIAN SHAVE ICE’S six locations island-wide. It’s powdery soft, and if you’re trying a tropical fla-vor, it literally tastes like biting into ice-cold tropical fruit! You’ll find yourself wanting to come back time and time again. From the superior quality to the friendliest staff around, everything they do is special. Their signature recipes use only the highest quality ingredients including premium fruit purees, fruit juices, extracts, and time-tested concentrates. 100% of their syrups

BEACHESEvery beach on Maui has its own character, its own sand, its own kind of waves. And every beach is open, free of charge—even if, at first glance, it seems to be surrounded by buildings. The guarantee of free beach access is a bedrock fixture of Hawai‘i state law. Parking can be a bit of a game, but it’s a game Maui wants you to win! Go out and find the beaches you haven’t yet discovered. Be safe and find the beach just right for you. Take a look at pages 14-15 for descriptions of our favorites, and our maps on pages 16 thru 20 for locations. Natural beauty is the best free attraction on Earth!
HIKINGMaui is a showcase of natural wonders, where stunning coastlines, lush rainforests, plunging waterfalls, and even a dormant volcano abound. One of the best ways to experience Maui’s unspoiled beauty is on foot. Before setting out, make sure you’ve got plenty of water and sunscreen, proper footwear, and a working cellphone. It’s also a good idea to let someone know where you’re headed. Better yet, consider going with an accredited hiking company like Hike Maui that will ensure your safety and enjoyment every step of the way.
