GREENINGEach year, our enthusiastic Communities in Bloom volunteers partner with the City and TECK, to undertake community heritage projects as well as plant stunning fl owerbeds and pots. Not only were we the overall winner for our population category, but the community also received National recognition for its historic mural venture.

A PROSPEROUS FUTURE � e foundation of Trail’s vibrant economy is the TECK Lead-Zinc Smelter complex. Firebird Semiconductors Ltd is another component of Trail’s stable economy. In 2010 this global technology company broke ground on new 40,000 sq. ft. facility. Other local corporations in our area have partnered in a project to construct a second powerhouse at the Waneta Dam. � is $900 million expansion will see the addition of 400 jobs and is expected to inject $200 million in direct wages into the region. 50th anniversary 1961 smoke Eaters 2011 is a special year for hockey in Trail, marking the 50th anniversary of the Trail Smoke Eaters winning the World Championship in 1961. This legendary team won the World Championships twice (1939 and 1961) and to this day, continue to be the most recent Canadian amateur hockey victors to date, earning a special place in both global hockey history and the hearts of Trail sports enthusiasts. Mark your calendar for March 12, 2011 when a special celebration of this historic event will

gyro park Just a short 10-minute walk from downtown Trail is the hidden gem of Gyro Park along the banks of the Columbia River. With picnic tables, spacious grassy areas, abundant rose gardens and gorgeous sandy beach, this park is great in summer for the whole family or romantic dates just for two. The kids will love the water spray park and outdoor playground and the river offers plenty of great catches for the fishing enthusiast. At the end of the day, unwind with some tasty treats from the concession stand and curl up on a blanket to enjoy live music during the weekly concert series. teck interpretive centre Located inside the Trail Visitor Centre, the Teck Interpretive Centre illustrates the importance of the Teck Smelter facility and how the metals refined there are used in our everyday products. The whole family will learn about the plant’s fascinating history, as told by “Tracozile,” the friendly, artificial-intelligence talking mascot who has tons of knowledge to share. 2011 Bc seniors games If you’re travelling to the West Kootenays in the summer of 2011, be sure to plan a stop in Nelson, Trail and Castlegar during the week of August 16 – 20 for the highly anticipated BC Seniors Games. These exciting Games will host 3,200 competitors, aged 55+ in a fun-filled week of community spirit, great friendships and good-natured challenges. Participants and spectators are expected from all over BC—and possibly further—as preparation and anticipation grows for this spectacular event.Striving to create an environment where everyone can come together to share laughs and generally have a great time supporting a united cause, the Games are comprised of 26 events, divided between the three cities. Along with athletic sports like tennis, slo-pitch and swimming, the Games will also host activities like card games, darts and one-act plays. These top-level competitions take place annually in a different BC city each year and are recognized as one of the largest Games organized within the province. Highlights for this year’s Games include provincial and world-record holders in attendance, as well as great community buzz and excitement during the week’s events.For Trail’s part, the city will host archery, darts, ice curling and five pin bowling, in addition to a local Italian favourite, bocce ball. Expected to generate huge interest is the new sport of “pickleball,” which is similar to badminton, tennis and table tennis, all rolled into one tension-filled game! So whether you’re two years old or 102, this is going to be the event of the summer and you don’t want to miss it! galleries & Museums From fine art to folk art, and everything in between, Trail’s natural landscape and European lifestyle have fostered a truly unique cultural scene. This artistic community is celebrated through organizations like the local VISAC Art Gallery and Trail Museum. The VISAC Community Art Gallery and Creative Arts Centre in Trail holds local and touring exhibits and works in co-operation with Community Education, conducting workshops in the visual arts. This

year-round facility captures the passions of local artists and features diverse exhibits including metal sculptures, historic portraits, and fibre and woodworking collections. The Trail Museum is open on a seasonal basis from June to August, displaying local artifacts, photos and unique items depicting the diverse culture and history of Trail. In addition, the annual ArtWalk celebration provides the perfect opportunity to discover local talents while exploring the hidden shops and treasures of the downtown core.

outdoor Beauty: Murals, rock Walls & staircasesAdventurous art lovers will love “mural hunting,” “rock wall scouting” and “covered staircase climbing” around the Greater Trail area. With eight large-scale murals painted on various buildings and dozens of carefully crafted retaining rock walls scattered throughout, Trail’s historic legacy is proudly displayed for all to see. Commissioned by the City of Trail and painted by professional muralists Steven Skolka and Tyler Toews of Canadian Murals, these colourful installations tell the story of vibrant industry, dedicated athletes, gorgeous scenery and the close-knit community who celebrate their city’s culture. In addition to these beautiful murals, the city’s rock walls each tell a tale of the hard working hands that lovingly placed each individual stone. Playfully named after foods common to the rock workers’ nationalities, you’ll love spending the day exploring these impressive walls. Trail’s famous covered staircases add a unique European flair to the city and happily protect citizens from the abundant winter snow and occasional rainy days. They are a beautiful part of the city and indeed have been commemorated by numerous local artists. Discovery loopWelcome to the Discovery Loop, a leisurely drive through the scenic communities of the West Kootenays. Begin your journey in the beautiful “Silver City” of Trail, then travel east along Highway 3B through the communities of Montrose, Fruitvale and Beaver Valley, toward Salmo. Once in Salmo, head north on Highway 6 toward Ymir (pronounced “why-mur”) to enjoy the lush scenery of Nelson, a city bustling with arts and culture and home to over 350 lovingly preserved heritage buildings. From Nelson, follow the Kootenay River along Highway 3A, west towards Castlegar, where you’ll find the year-round Kootenay Gallery of Art, History and Science and the seasonal Doukhobor Discovery Centre. Continuing west along Highway 3 takes you to the Paulson summit and Nancy Greene Park, perfect for hiking and cross-country skiing. Complete the Loop by turning south onto Highway 3B toward the “Alpine City” of Rossland, visiting Red Mountain Resort and the Le Roi Gold Mine, before arriving back in Trail, just in time for a delicious Italian meal and some robust espresso. Perfetto!
