communities in Bloom With lush gardens and colourful flowers proudly adorning city streets and tucked away on hillside terraces, it’s easy to see why Trail is a “5 Bloom” community. This prestigious National Award is granted to communities who show a commitment to beautifying their city, practicing sustainability and creating community spirit. Part of this honourable designation was for Trail’s outstanding work on the Historic Murals Project and their lovingly tended gardens. 2010 is the second time Trail has

won this award (2006), thanks to the dedication of the hardworking volunteers involved in the project. trail.ca | communitiesinbloom.ca photo: Brian Findlow

Participants and spectators are expected from all over BC—and possibly further—as preparation and anticipation grows for this spectacular event.Striving to create an environment where everyone can come together to share laughs and generally have a great time supporting a united cause, the Games are comprised of 26 events, divided between the three cities. Along with athletic sports like tennis, slo-pitch and swimming, the Games will also host activities like card games, darts and one-act plays. These top-level competitions take place annually in a different BC city each year and are recognized as one of the largest Games organized within the province. Highlights for this year’s Games include provincial and world-record holders in attendance, as well as great community buzz and excitement during the week’s events. For Trail’s part, the city will host archery, darts, ice curling and five pin bowling, in addition to a local Italian favourite, bocce ball. outdoor Beauty: Murals, rock Walls & staircasesAdventurous art lovers will love “mural hunting,” “rock wall scouting” and “covered staircase climbing” around the Greater Trail area. With eight large-scale murals painted on various buildings and dozens of carefully crafted retaining rock walls scattered throughout, Trail’s historic legacy is proudly displayed for all to see. Commissioned by the City of Trail and painted by professional muralists Steven Skolka and Tyler Toews of Canadian Murals, these colourful installations tell the story of vibrant industry, dedicated athletes, gorgeous scenery and the close-knit community who celebrate their city’s culture. In addition to these beautiful murals, the city’s rock walls each tell a tale of the hard working hands that lovingly placed each individual stone. Playfully named after foods common to the rock workers’ nationalities, you’ll love spending the day exploring these impressive walls. Trail’s famous covered staircases add a unique European flair to the city and happily protect citizens from the abundant winter snow and occasional rainy days. They are a beautiful part of the city and indeed have been commemorated by numerous local artists. Check out maps 2 & 3 for locations and the Trail Visitor Information Centre for self-guided walking tour maps. 200 – 1199 Bay avenue, trail | 250.368.3144 | trail.ca

living legacy In addition to producing some of the world’s best athletes, the City of Trail is also recognized for producing world-class resources. It’s a little-known fact that the Teck Lead-Zinc Smelter is one of the world’s largest operations of its kind, and indeed Trail’s global impact can be seen all over the world and even in the homes of Olympic medal winners! As the exclusive supplier of the metals used in the production of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games medals, Teck Resources Limited ensured Trail’s spot in Olympic history. Moreover, the Olympic medals were the first to contain metals recovered from end-of-life electronics (“e-waste”) making them part of combined sustainability philosophies, practices and commitments from the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Teck Resources and the City of Trail. Indeed, Trail is rich with history, yet poised for its sparkling bright future.

poised on the brink of an economic boom, Trail is a community geared to action

and boasts a vibrant economy in a naturally beautiful mountain setting. It’s a dream lifestyle, complete with gorgeous summers by the beach and snowy winters on the ski slopes, close to major centres, yet peacefully secluded and serene. And with recent developments in the technology sector, Trail is on the cutting edge and its growth potential is secure. Specifically, projects like the Waneta Dam expansion will create 400 new jobs, bringing over $200 million to the community, directly benefitting residents. Moreover, these new jobs will leave a lasting legacy via an injection of skilled trades people through guaranteed apprenticeship programs. Striving to keep their naturally beautiful location in mind, the expansion project, once completed, will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, protecting the environment for future generations and protecting environmental harmony.

a shining future

MAP 1 - REGIONAL & PROVINCIAL OVERVIEW

Map 1_Overview.indd 2 1/31/11 5:06:36 PM

Discovery loopWelcome to the Discovery Loop, a leisurely drive through the scenic communities of the West Kootenays. Begin your journey in the beautiful “Silver City” of Trail, then travel east along Highway 3B through the communities of Montrose, Fruitvale and Beaver Valley, toward Salmo. Once in Salmo, head north on Highway 6 toward Ymir (pronounced “why-mur”) to enjoy the lush scenery of Nelson, a city bustling with arts and culture and home to over 350 lovingly preserved heritage buildings. From Nelson, follow the Kootenay River along Highway 3A, west towards Castlegar, where you’ll find the year-round Kootenay Gallery of Art, History and Science and the seasonal Doukhobor Discovery Centre. Continuing west along Highway 3 takes you to the Paulson summit and Nancy Greene Park, perfect for hiking and cross-country skiing. Complete the Loop by turning south onto Highway 3B toward the “Alpine City” of Rossland, visiting Red Mountain Resort and the Le Roi Gold Mine, before arriving back in Trail, just in time for a delicious Italian meal and some robust espresso. Perfetto!
