President’s Message

Through a process of community collaboration, innovation and leadership, the VNA & Hospice has again closed 2013, both with a positive balance and with expanded services through your donated dollars. We have increased the effectiveness of communication both internally and externally as measured by improved volumes, retention of staff, and patient/staff satisfaction.

The VNA & Hospice exists to care for our patients and clients. Our managers have provided motivation to our staff and, with your financial donations, the proper tools and comprehensive training to achieve excellence in job performance. Within our available resources, we have provided care to people residing in our service area regardless of their ability to pay. We have maintained our “preferred” status and become the premier community service provider in service and quality patient care. VNA & Hospice has continued to be the most comprehensive regional home health agency and hospice provider in the scope of our service, geography and volume.

Throughout 2013, our staff have achieved positive results through empowerment, creativity, teamwork, quality and accountability. Our patient and family support has grown, our clientele for the Adult Day Center has strengthened, and our business connections for Wellness [at] Work have flourished. This could not have been accomplished without the dedication, loyalty and support of our community and our donors.

Once again, our heartfelt thanks to each of you for your belief in our mission, and to the physicians and other referral sources who connect us with you.

Through our community’s support, the VNA & Hospice and our loyal donors have been able to provide preferred care to our residents, and to extend our services to meet the needs our clients and their family members.

We’d like you to know about some of our larger, extended programs, so you, as one of our donors will know where your money goes and why it is so important to those in need.

Hospice/Home Health ServicesTo better serve our patients as well as their families, the VNA instituted longer intake department hours. This way, if a patient is leaving a hospital on a Friday night, they don’t have to wait two days for a nurse to come to their home and process their admission– VNA provides service within a two hour window. The clinical staff and volunteers provide for as many needs as possible within those first few hours so that the family and the patient can concentrate on each other, and not on care.

Hospice has also started an educational series that provides important medical information to the community. We also provide information to other medical professionals so all understand how to gain access to our medical care and, especially, when to seek that care. VNA has developed key partnerships with Monterey County Public Health, Alzheimer’s Association, Meals on Wheels, United Veteran’s Council, Area Agency on Aging and the Arthritis Foundation. These partnerships mean that families can receive outside resources quickly and efficiently to lessen the burden of everyday responsibilities while caring for a loved one with end of life issues.

Medical treatments that at one time could only be conducted in the hospital are now done in the home of the patient so the patient is more comfortable and has a better outcome. This eliminates the “revolving door” in and out of the hospital and provides a higher quality of life for the patient. A skills lab has been created within the VNA offices so clinicians can practice these skills to keep up on all the new innovations. We are grateful that all the mannequins and accessories were purchased using donated monies from our local donors.

Bereavement services have also been expanded. VNA provides regularly scheduled group sessions all over our service area in locations that are easily accessible to our senior population, as well as one-on-one sessions for those who are more comfortable in an intimate relationship with our spiritual counselors. Thanks to donated resources, if the VNA receives a call that a family member is dying and the family needs some spiritual support, our bereavement counselors answer the call, whether or not this family is on service with VNA. We understand that the dying process can be frightening for family members. They need someone who understands and can guide them through those last few hours. A VNA bereavement personnel sits vigil if the family wishes, as we never want someone to die alone. The bereavement program is sponsored by your donations as well as respite programs so that families can attend important events, and know that their loved one is home and comfortable.

VNA Quality of Life and Good Samaritan ProgramsThese programs are 100% community funded; allowing the VNA to identify needs of our patients and to address them when normally we wouldn’t have the financial ability to help. A good example of this use is captured in this account of one of our patients. After being sick for a long time, and eventually spending a great deal of time in a hospital, our patient was discharged to VNA home health care. Later that afternoon, when the VNA Registered

Nurse arrived at the home for the initial assessment, it was obvious, due to the patient’s illness, that the house needed cleaning. The refrigerator had spoiled food and her bed linens had not been changed while the patient had been in the hospital. The VNA Quality of Life program funded a house cleaning, some initial groceries and a laundry service to get the patient back to normal and able to concentrate on recovery.

VNA Pet TherapyIf you see a pet with a blue VNA jacket on, stop and say hello. The screening and outfitting for these pet therapy dogs are also proudly supported by our local donors. Whether they are walking around a skilled nursing facility or at the VNA Adult Day Center, they are an important link with our clients/patients.

Veteran’s Out ReachThe VNA has been working closely with the VFW, the American Legion and the United Veteran’s Council to attend to the veterans needs and concerns about their health. Our grant funded Veteran liaison and other liaison team members have

brought our educational series “to their backyard” so it is easier to assist and educate the veteran and their families about the choices of care and where to receive services. Through this close partnership, the VNA has been able to move forward in their “We Honor Vets” National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization’s program and became the first local non-profit as a member of the United Veteran’s Council. This has been accomplished through the hard work of our staff and the donated dollars to support this type of outreach in our community.

VNA Community ServicesThe VNA is completing their second (grant funded) successful year of collaboration between Community Housing Improvements Systems and Planning Association (CHISPA) and VNA to provide a comprehensive wellness program within a Latino housing community. This collaboration has been funded through a grant award from the Community Foundation for Monterey County. Residents are working together to create healthy routines and individual healthy choices for their families and themselves. Educational components and exercise/group activities have provided healthier choices and changes in behavior within this community.

Donations have also allowed VNA to provide both DPT and Flu vaccines at reduced rates and sponsored vaccines to provide access to immunizations against preventable diseases. As you may have heard, the Center for Disease Control has requested that everyone from infant to elder be immunized against flu every year. As a result less deaths and severe illness has been reported for the fiscal year.

Through your donations and grant monies, the VNACS provided an after school health program for one of the lowest income areas in our county. We worked with students, in collaboration with their physical education teachers, to teach variations of exercise for those students with medical conditions such as asthma or weight problems. There were nutrition classes, tours of the local market and homework for the students to engage their parents into healthy eating habits. These sessions culminated in a visit to the Monterey Rock Gym where students now had the ability and confidence to climb a rock wall. Some students had never been out of their home area or exposed to rock wall climbing and were thrilled that they could accomplish this ultimate exercise experience.

VNA Adult Day CenterThe VNA Adult Day Center expanded their hours to better accommodate those families who work and care for a frail senior. With the assistance of the Veterans Association, the Alzheimer’s Association, and dollars donated by our great local supporters, more sponsorships for Veterans and dementia patients are available for our program. Music, crafts, pet therapy and poetry classes have been expanded. The Carmel Foundation has shown exhibits of the art work that these clients have created. If you are in the neighborhood of 800 Cass Street on a weekday, please stop in and see what a great program exists because of the community’s charitable giving. The families that utilize this program don’t have the means to pay for assistance at home, nor do they want to see their loved one in a skilled nursing facility prematurely. This is their only outlet for respite care. It allows family members to grocery shop, spend time with grandchildren, or just rest. VNA is proud of this needed community outreach and hope more will utilize its services.

Whether you purchase a raffle ticket, send in a check from a request for donation, or leave VNA & Hospice a gift or bequest within your estate, you know that VNA is the preferred provider of home health and hospice services in Monterey County. Your money is used to support our community. Bless all of you for helping to keep the VNA & Hospice as a huge source of compassion for those in need.

The VNA & Hospice Casino Night was held at Carmel Valley’s newly reopened Quail Lodge in 2013. Guests were greeted with a glass of champagne and the sounds of the Vibe Tribe. A lovely buffet dinner was served by Quail’s newest Chef Kenneth MacDonald. This major fundraiser raised funds to support all the VNA & Hospice programs from immunizations to the Adult Day Center, and from home health managing cardiac patients to providing hospice services wherever the patient resided.

The VNA & Hospice Casino Night raised $33,665 in cash and $12,016 in “in-kind” gifts. Expenses totaled $18,469 which provided cash profit of $15,195. 40% net profit

Our VNA “Dine Around the Peninsula” Raffle raised $11,320 in cash and $1,604 in-kind gifts. Expenses totaled $137.21 which provided cash profit of $11,183. 98% net profit

Behind the Scenes Darcy Grose, a 14 year RN veteran of VNA & Hospice

Have your ever known one of those people who is always super busy and is always smiling and saying yes to every request? Well, that’s the VNA’s RN Darcy. Darcy began nursing school in 1990, while she and her spouse were stationed in Ft Hood, Texas. A career military family, Darcy, her husband Kevin, and their children Tyler and Emily, received orders to Germany in 1991, temporarily halting Darcy’s pursuit of becoming a nurse. Three years later, Darcy and her family returned to the states, where she discovered a long waiting list to be accepted into nursing school. Darcy did not give up, finally earning her RN after nine years of military moves, and college waiting lists. She graduated nursing school with honors in 1999 from Northern Virginia Community College. Throughout nursing school, Darcy worked as a CNA at Fair Oaks Hospital, VA. Her first job as an RN was on the cardiac telemetry unit, a very busy step-down ICU, at Alexandria Hospital, VA. In the summer 2000, Darcy and her family would receive their last set of military orders, stationing them in Monterey, CA. Darcy applied at the local hospitals but the dayshift positions she was seeking

were unavailable. This led Darcy to the Visiting Nurses Association where she thought she would temporarily work as a home care nurse until something came available at one of the hospitals. Darcy fell in love with home care nursing almost immediately and ended up turning down both hospitals when they offered dayshift positions a few months later. For Darcy, working at CCVNA was the perfect fit for her nursing career. Diverse and complicated, home care nursing is both challenging and rewarding. From admission to discharge, Darcy works closely with doctors and medical staff to ensure each patient is well cared for through the stages of recovery. For 14 years Darcy has enjoyed the one on one patient interaction, autonomy of home care, and sense of community CCVNA brings to the Monterey Peninsula.

Planned GivingIf you are thinking about giving a gift or testamentary bequest to the VNA & Hospice or the VNA Adult Day Center, please make sure you list the gift in your legal documents correctly. There are many organizations with similar names and addresses so check your documents to make sure it reads:

Central Coast VNA & Hospice, Inc. 5 Lower Ragsdale Drive; PO Box 2480 Monterey, CA 93942

VNA Community Services Inc. - Adult Day Center 5 Lower Ragsdale Drive; PO Box 2480 Monterey, CA 93942

Many times we receive wills that state Visiting Nurse Association or just Hospice with our address. These are not legal names and can cause estate problems. So make sure you review your documents with your attorney to verify your last wishes are fulfilled correctly by using the correct organization name and the correct address. The acronym “VNA” for Visiting Nurse Association is imperative to be clear which organization you are donating to in your will or trust. So think VNA to support home service, VNA Hospice for hospice service, and VNA Community Service for the Adult Day Center. Thank you for thinking of the VNA when you are planning your estate gifts.

For 62 years, the tradition of generous giving to VNA and Hospice has sustained its ability to provide charitable care to Central Coast residents who lack sufficient health care coverage or are unable to pay. These funds booster the nonprofit agency’s ability to provide the highest quality care to all who need it. The VNA is enormously grateful to all of its donors who, by their act of giving, affirm the value of the service we provide to those in need and the excellence with which we provide it.
