WITNESS ON TRACK FOR CUP BID Australian raider Star Witness (Aus) (Starcraft {NZ})was sent to work on the July Course yesterday bytrainer Danny O=Brien in preparation for a tilt atSaturday=s G1 Darley July Cup. Partnered by jockeySteven Arnold in the spin, the G1 King=s Stand S.second and G1 Golden Jubilee S. third gave all the rightsignals, according to his conditioner. AThat was verypleasing,@ O=Brien said after the work. ASteven wasreally happy with the way Star Witness felt on thecourse. Obviously, it is a different course from what wewould have at home. Most of our racecourses are fairlyflat. The horse did not appear to have any problemtaking the dips and rises. He was very strong throughthe line on his gallop. It is obviously different when youget under raceday pressure, but it was all positive outthere this morning.@ He added, AAn Australian-trainedhorse has never won the July Cup--a bridge too far forthe Australians in the past--but naturally it is achallenge and we would like to be the first to win it.@ Of how his charge has been doing since RoyalAscot, O=Brien offered, AHe went into the King=s StandS. needing the run--it was part of his preparation for theJubilee--but we were still hoping to win that race. Hecame out of the King's Stand S. in great order andobviously ran very well on the Saturday withoutconditions being in his favour.@

O=Brien continued, AHe has had three weeks since andreally enjoyed the environment here at Newmarket. Hecertainly has not gone backwards.@ The 4-year-old, a two-time Group 1 winner inAustralia, will be retired after Saturday=s race, and histrainer thinks an English Group 1 win on the stallion=sresume would look pretty good. AHe is going to WiddenStud,@ O=Brien confirmed. AHe goes into quarantinestraight from the races here on Saturday. He gets onthe flight with all the shuttle horses and will start atWidden in September. There is never a Group 1 race ina country like England that is going to be easy to win. Ifwe could walk away with a July Cup win on thishorse=s resume, that would be a fantastic thing for himto take into his stud career. There were two deservingwinners at Ascot, and we just hope we get our turn onSaturday.@ As for tactics in Saturday=s race, O=Brien said hehoped to see Star Witness wait longer to make hismove. AWe probably would like to hold him up for a bitlonger on Saturday,@ he explained. AWe got a bitexposed in the Jubilee--we probably went a fractionearly as the horses down the stand=s side rail looked tobe well in front. We were out on our feet in the last100 metres. We need to be running to the post, ratherthan staggering to it. I will leave it to Steven, but I amsure he will be a little bit more patient on Saturday andhold it together for as long as he can.@ Arnold, who rode in this race two years ago when10th on 11-8 favorite Scenic Blast (Aus) (Scenic {Ire}),added, AStar Witness seems to be holding his form well, which is obviously important and, if he runs like he didat Ascot, he will be competitive on Saturday. I wouldn=tbe surprised if it is not quite as testing as Ascot oversix furlongs. The speed in the race will dictate wherewe are--we will probably be just behind the pace. If heperforms up to his best, he will be in there at the finish.Scenic Blast came off winning the King=s Stand S., sohe was in good form as well, but he did not put up hisrun that day for whatever reason, but he was gone wellbefore the rise, so it was not the track.@

BATTER UP: FASIG FIRST We=re less than a week away from Fasig-Tipton July, the inaugural yearling sale of the season, and thoughthere are nearly four weeks between it and Saratoga--also a Fasig sale--the catalogues are now out or onlinefor both. The first thing that hits you when you look atthe books is that the number catalogued is down, inboth sales. Fasig July shrinks to one day from two, with a 26% drop in the number catalogued (407 to303), while Saratoga drops 21%, from 202 to 160 overtwo nights. Combined, there are 463 cataloguedbetween the two sales, down 24% from 609catalogued last year, and down 40% from the 763catalogued between the two sales in 2008. What is worrying about this drop is that the twosales represent first, the middle tier of the market, and

second, the uppertier. When the foalcrop started to shrinkfrom the years ofoverproduction, theidea was that thebiggest drop innumbers would comeat the bottom; butwhat these numberssuggest is that therehas been significant

attrition in all tiers of the market. The freezing of creditthat resulted from the global recession of 2008-09evidently affected more than just the bottom, no doubta function of record stud fees and other highproduction costs. Keeneland doesn=t have a final countyet for their September supermarket sale, but how farthe number catalogued is below last year=s 4,857 is astatistic that will be watched more closely than usual. Traditionally a fall in the numbers cataloguedcorrelates with being able to sustain an average, whichwas $75,780 at Fasig last year, and $277,051 atSaratoga. Fasig=s July sale tends to average in the$75,000 to $100,000 range, so with a smallercatalogue and a market maybe on the rise, there mustbe some optimism for an uptick in average. On theother hand, we are still in the thick of a downsizing inmany other aspects of the business, including on themajor non-slots circuits--California, Kentucky and, atone point, New York--which traditionally supply thebiggest players who spend the biggest money. Butmaybe they=ll be encouraged by the downsizing to thinkthey can be more competitive in the most prestigiousraces as the competition seemingly thins out. Cont. p6

With the move to one day, Fasig has scrapped itsNew Sire Showcase (at least temporarily), but the threestallions with the highest representation arenonetheless first-crop sires. With 10 each catalogued atFasig are Hill >n= Dale=s dual GI Breeders= Cup Sprintwinner Midnight Lute (Real Quiet) and Spendthrift=s TizWonderful (Tiznow), winner of the GII Kentucky JockeyClub S. as a 2-year-old. Midnight Lute had 20weanlings/short yearlings average $46,000 during the2010-11 mixed sales; Tiz Wonderful had 24 average$36,062. His individuals impressed a lot of judges, withthe foals and short yearlings sold averaging almostthree times his entering 2009 stud fee. Beingessentially a conformation sale, having so manyaccepted to Fasig July suggests the stock of bothhorses are continuing to impress at least the salescompany judges. Majestic Warrior (A.P. Indy) was reportedly a veryexpensive purchase by Coolmore after winning the GI Hopeful S. in 2007, but, as fate would have it, henever even hit the board in five subsequent starts attwo and three. Ashford accepted right away he wouldhave to be a mid-range sire and work his way up; hewent to stud for $20,000, itself a far cry from whatthey were no doubt hoping to stand him for when theybought him, and in 2011 he stood for just half that,$10,000. He had 21 weanlings/short yearlings average$33,652, but, in the context of what he now standsfor, having nine yearlings accepted for Fasig July is agood sign. Four other sires with their first yearlings have five orsix yearlings catalogued. Two are sons of Street Cry:Darley=s Street Boss, a dual Grade I winner sprinting inCalifornia as a 4-year-old; and Vinery=s Street Hero, winner of the GI Norfolk S. at two. Three Chimneys= BigBrown was the champion 3-year-old of 2008; he andCurlin (Smart Strike; three at Saratoga) figure to be thetwo >Book 1= North American sires among the siregroup with first foals 2010, first yearlings 2011. BigBrown is by Danzig=s son Boundary, who has a prettysuccessful second-crop sire son already this year inPomeroy. Big Brown has five catalogued at Fasig, asdoes Notional (In Excess). He=s one of three Spendthriftstallions with first-crop representation at Fasig, alongwith Tiz Wonderful (see above) and Into Mischief(Harlan=s Holiday; three catalogued). Another nine stallions have between five and sevencatalogued at Fasig July, of which four have 5-year-olds and up in 2011, and five have their first 2-year-olds, 3-year-olds, or 4-year-olds. Among the olderbrigade, two have seven catalogued each: WinStar=s(formerly Airdrie=s) Harlan=s Holiday (Harlan), who haseight black-type winners this year; and Walmac=sSongandaprayer (Unbridled=s Song), a prolific sire of2-year-old winners, with five already this year includinglast Sunday=s GII Matron S. second, Say a Novena.Cont. p7

“Downsizing the catalogues is the main theme of next week’s season-opening Fasig July Yearling Sale and their top-tier Saratoga Sale next month. Fasig July’s catalogue is down 26 percent to a one-day sale, with 303 catalogued; Saratoga drops 21 percent, from 202 to 160. Fasig July’s clearance rate from the catalogue was around 60 percent last year, so they’ll be hoping to sustain that rate at least. The gross, as you can see, has dropped by half since 2007, and will surely drop more, but the $75,780 - $77,716 averages the last two years are the real target. The 2-year-old market results are a positive.”

Three Chimneys= Exchange Rate (Danzig) had a 2.41APEX A Runner Index at the end of last year from hisFlorida crops. His first Kentucky crop includes lastweekend=s GIII Bashford Manor S. winner Exfactor. Hehas six catalogued at Fasig, as does the now-Turkishstallion, Lion Heart (Tale of the Cat). Adena Springs= Ghostzapper (Awesome Again),among the top five third-crop sires this year (click hereto see the year-to-date third-crop sire list), has fivecatalogued at Fasig. Among second-crop sires, Darley=sRockport Harbor (Unbridled=s Song), fifth on the 2011second-crop sire list (click here), has six in the book, while WinStar=s Bluegrass Cat (Storm Cat), who is10th, has five catalogued. Among freshman sires, withtheir first 2-year-olds, Gainesway=s Corinthian (Pulpit)and deceased (was Stonewall) Lawyer Ron (Langfuhr)each has six catalogued. Saratoga is a different ball game; as you=d expect, adifferent group of sires has the biggest representationthere. Darley=s top-three second-crop sire Bernardini(A.P. Indy) tops all sires with 16 catalogued atSaratoga--fully 10% of the catalogue, in fact. Last year,Bernardini ranked third among freshman sires byprogeny earnings and had four graded/group stakeswinners, two of them Grade I/Group 1 winners, and itjust seemed a question of when, not if. He=s runningsecond to War Front in 2011 progeny earnings, withBellamy Road right behind him in third, and you justwant to say, would you get on with it, please?Bernardini has just two black-type winners this year, though he=s had five different 3-year-olds place in aGrade I. Surely, with the number of his runners that areplenty more than useful, a >big horse= is imminent. Seven other sires have six to eight yearlings eachcatalogued to Saratoga, only one of which, Darley=spromising freshman sire Hard Spun (Danzig, 6catalogued) is not a proven sire. Leader among these isanother Darley stallion, Medaglia d=Oro, with 11catalogued. He is one of three F2006 sires (first foals2006, first 5-year-olds 2011) among the seven; theother two are Gainesway=s 2011 Leading NorthAmerican sire (by progeny earnings), Tapit, and Lane=sEnd=s equally exciting Candy Ride, with seven and sixcatalogued, respectively. With eight each at Saratogaare Taylor Made=s perennial top 15 sire (and verypromising broodmare sire) Unbridled=s Song andSpendthrift=s Malibu Moon, North America=s newest top10 sire. Airdrie=s Indian Charlie, sire of 2010 2-year-oldchampion Uncle Mo (remember him?) has sevencatalogued.Click here for a list of all sires represented at Fasig-Tipton July and Saratoga, with a breakdown of first-crop sires.

BAPAK CHINTA HAS NUNTHORPE AIM BapakChinta (Speightstown) is being aimed at the G1 Nunthorpe S. at York, connections announcedyesterday. Successful inthe G2 Norfolk S. over fivefurlongs at Royal AscotJune 16, the Kevin Ryantrainee will warm up forthe Aug. 19 highlight inthe G2 Prix Robert Papin atMaisons-Laffitte July 24.AHe goes to France nextfor the Papin and then for the Nunthorpe,@ Ryan told PASport. AIt=s 5 1/2 furlongs, but they go a different pacein France. I wasn=t tempted to go straight to York, Iwanted him to gain some more experience first. I=d loveto see him dropped in in a race, but that probably won=thappen in France because of their style of racing and hehas such a high cruising speed.@

LOVE OF MONEY

Two-year-old Jack’s in the Deck, from the second crop of graded stakes winner Love of Money, broke his maiden in his second start by posting a dominating 4-length score in the historic $150,000 Futurity S.-G2 at six furlongs on Sunday, July 3 at Belmont Park.

The Skeedattle Stable-owned runner has “been getting better as he’s trained, and we all felt like going longer would be better for him,” said winning conditioner Robin Graham. Out of the Partner’s Hero mare Thracian, and closely related to multiple stakes winner Spirited Game, Jack’s in the Deck was entered in the Futurity off a second-place finish in his debut at Delaware Park on May 25.

Jack’s in the Deck is the second stakes horse for Love of Money from 17 starters. A quality miler, Love of Money was able to extend his speed in his stakes debut by blasting to the front of the 1 1/8 mi. Penn syl vania Derby-G2 and drawing off to win by nearly 9 lengths. The son of Not For Love won four times in 10 starts, from 6 fur. to 1 1/8 mi., by an average margin of nearly 7 lengths, earning $602,705.
