A MESSAGE FROM THE COUNTY EXECUTIVE

Soon, the mercury will rise and the cold temperatures and wet weather of winter will be a faded shadow in the springtime sunshine. The warm air, flowers in bloom and tranquil blue skies signal a rebirth in all of our lives, beckoning us to shake off the doldrums and explore our community.

Spring is the best time to reacquaint yourself with – or discover for the first time – our historic Essex County Parks System and the loveliness of flowers, trees and the beauty of nature. From April through June, visitors can experience a marathon blooming season of unparalleled diversity.

There are more than 5,000 cherry trees transforming the canvas of Essex County Branch Brook Park into a canopy of pink and white every April. This display is larger and more diverse than the national collection in Washington, DC, and is accompanied by a two-week festival of activities. The Essex County Presby Memorial Iris Gardens is world-renown for its variety of this elegant flower. Every May and June, the majestic petals create a “Rainbow on the Hill,” rivalling the colors of a painter’s palette. The Rose Gardens in Essex County Brookdale Park are a fragrant and lush display of America’s favorite flower. Coming to life every June, they form a generous exhibition for photographers and painters.

This magazine offers just a sampling of the plentiful offerings of cultural activities that occur every day in Essex County. We encourage you to explore and enjoy a new experience.

Saturday, April 8 to Sunday, April 23The County of Essex has a historic collection of Japanese cherry trees within Essex County Branch Brook Park in Newark. More than 5,000 trees will bloom from mid to late April, creating a pink and white setting that is perfect for picnics and photos. Celebrate the arrival of spring by attending our week-long festival of events or just take a stroll through the groves on a sunny day. The Park is open to the public from dawn to dusk. Visit the Essex County Veterans Courthouse at lunchtime this spring for the “Music in May” lunchtime concert series. Take a break and listen to some of the area’s most talented musicians. A complete schedule will be posted in the spring on www.essexcountynj.org.

“My father was the primary driver behind getting a park for Cedar Grove. And this community center is as much a tribute to my father as it is for my mother – and to all our fathers and mothers – because of what they contributed to making the town what it is today,” he added.

The new Essex County Cedar Grove Park is 77 acres of open space situated along Fairview Avenue in Cedar Grove. It becomes the fourth largest County park, behind Branch Brook Park, Weequahic Park and Brookdale Park. There are about two miles of walking paths through the park with historic lighting, a gazebo, benches and trash receptacles.

On the eastern side of Fairview Avenue is the 15,000-square-foot Essex County Robert J. O’Toole Community Center. The building has a covered portico in front and a covered patio in the back. A daily congregate meal program offered by the Essex County Division of Senior Citizens is hosted in the building as well as meetings and events of other community organizations. Adjacent to the community center are four bocce courts and a playground designed with a farming theme to connect to the history of the Essex County Hospital Center when there was a farm on the site to support the hospital.

Essex County Cedar Grove Park is the fifth new park to be added to the Essex County Park System since 2007. The 11-acre Essex County Kip’s Castle Park in Montclair and Verona was preserved in 2007, the 10-acre Presby Memorial Iris Gardens was preserved in 2009, the 2.7-acre Essex County Veterans Memorial Park in the Essex County Government Complex in Newark opened in 2009 and the 12.3-acre Essex County Riverfront Park was created in 2012.

The Essex County Park System was created in 1895 and is the first county park system established in the United States. The Park System consists of more than 6,000 acres and has 23 parks, five reservations, an environmental center, a zoo, Treetop Adventure Course, ice skating rink, roller skating rink, three public golf courses, golf driving range, two miniature golf courses, three off-leash dog facilities, a castle and the Presby Memorial Iris Gardens.

THE PLAY STARTS HERE!

On December 12, 2016, Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. announced the completion of the Essex County Cedar Grove Park and the Robert J. O’Toole Community Center on Fairview Avenue in Cedar Grove. Developed on the site of the old Essex County Hospital Center, Cedar Grove Park is the first county park in Cedar Grove and, at 77-acres, is the fourth largest and the 23rd park in the Essex County Parks System. It features the Robert J. O’Toole Community Center, named for the township’s retired three-term mayor and 12-year councilman, four bocce courts, a farm-themed playground area, and three fitness stations along meandering walking paths.

“Preservation of this land for passive recreation and a community center fulfills a promise we made in 2007 to minimize development on the old hospital complex. Essex County is one of the most densely populated counties on the East Coast and creating 77 acres of open space will maintain the suburban character of Cedar Grove, provide additional recreation opportunities and enhance residents’ quality of life,” DiVincenzo said. “One of the main features of the Park is the Essex County Robert J. O’Toole Community Center, named for retired Mayor and Councilman Robert J. O’Toole. Mr. O’Toole has served his community for half a century and was a staunch advocate for limiting development on the property. We can think of no more appropriate person after whom to name the building,” he added.

“Thank you for dedicating this building in my honor and thank you, on behalf of the Cedar Grove residents, for this beautiful park. It will be enjoyed by many for generations to come,” Robert O’Toole said. “I call Joe DiVincenzo ‘Mr. Parks’ because of all the improvements he has made to the parks throughout Essex County. We had been trying to create a community center and Joe came riding in on his white horse with this plan,” he added.

“For Cedar Grove to have a county park and a community building like this is unbelievable. We are looking forward to the generations of residents who will gain enjoyment from this. I have become a believer in Joe DiVincenzo, because when he says he is going to do something, he gets it done,” NJ State Senator Kevin O’Toole said.

Kip’s Castle Oral History ProjectThe Kip’s Castle Oral History Project is an ongoing effort to stitch together the narrative of Essex County Kip’s Castle Park, a gem added to the park system in 2007. The Historical Archives of the Essex County Parks System, with funding from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities and in conjunction with the Rutgers Oral History Archives, has assembled stories about Kip’s Castle over the last 110 years. Those interviewed include members of the Kip and Munoz families, as well as later occupants and employees who worked at the Castle.A selection of the interviewees’ observations are now available through an interactive presentation on HistoryPin.org. The arena is open to the public for ice skating, group skating lessons, private skating parties, along with figure skating and ice hockey camps. Many ice skating competitions, including the Figure Skating Winter ESCapade, the New Jersey State High School hockey state games, the Essex County Winter Holiday Hockey Tournament and many other skating events are hosted at the arena. The Department of Parks has long been at the forefront of efforts to provide exposure to, and broaden the understanding and enjoyment of the sport of golf. We provide unique opportunities for both male and female golfers of all ages and abilities. Our mission is to make golf an affordable and accessible sport to anyone who wishes to play.

Our golf schedule introduces anyone and everyone to the sport of golf in an educational, recreational, instructional and competitive environment, or any combination of these formats. All the participant needs to bring is an interest in the sport of golf.

General Golf InformationThe County of Essex requires each golfer to enroll with the County prior to using the automated tee time system. You may enroll in person at all three golf courses Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 4:00pm and on Saturday from 8:30am to 12:00pm.

New registrations The County will accept only a valid New Jersey Driver’s License with current address and one current utility bill (Telephone, PSE&G or Cable only) with the applicant’s name on it. If bills are in a spouse’s name, the applicant must show a copy of a marriage certificate. We will also accept Passports with an Essex County address.

Renewals Golfers must provide proof of residency annually when renewing their Golf ID card. Essex County Francis Byrne Golf CoursePleasant Valley Way West Orange, NJClubhouse Manager: Larry Pallante973.736.2306Essex County Francis Byrne Golf Course dates back to 1926, when it was designed as a private country club course by noted golf architect Charles Banks. Through our renovation project, many of the course features have been restored to their classic roots, making Byrne one of the premiere public golf destinations in the state. A number of holes are based on famous courses from Scotland, including the par five 1st hole that is modeled after the Road Hole at St. Andrews.

Among other classic holes on the Byrne Golf Course are the long par three Biarritz 2nd hole that measures well over 200 yards from the championship tee and the short 11th that is similar to the Eden hole that is also found at St. Andrews, as well as many of the best private clubs in the United States. The back nine at Byrne includes several long par four holes, such as the 12th and 15th, the latter of which champion golfer Bobby Jones considered to be one of the most difficult holes in America.

This beautiful course in West Orange features deep bunkers, hilly topography and rolling greens that combine to create a wonderfully challenging layout that measures nearly 6,800 yards and offers public golfers the rare opportunity to play a course from golf ’s Golden Age of Design.

Group Golf The Group Golf program is for all groups interested in an 18-hole event with 20 golfers or more. Open to all organizations. Limited dates, courses and times available. Please call the Director of Golf Operations to schedule available times at a select course.

Junior GolfThe Essex County Parks Department believes it is important to grow the game of golf and we believe there is no better place to start than with the Junior Golfers. We have special Junior golf rates and have developed a relationship with The First Tee program promoting leadership initiatives and positive life skills in our community’s youth. Children between 11 years of age and 15 years of age are required to have a parent or guardian supervisor over the age of 18 years.

USGA Handicap System The Department of Parks, in cooperation with the NJSGA, offers the USGA GHIN handicap program. Computers are available at all three golf courses. We encourage interested individuals to subscribe to the service for a nominal fee and receive handicap updates every two weeks.

Designed by architect Charles Banks, Essex County Hendricks Field Golf Course features well contoured putting surfaces and many interest-ing holes. Opened in 1929, renovations at Hendricks have included the reconstruction of tees and bunkers, as well as extensive upgrades in drainage that have significantly improved playing conditions.

Hendricks has a number of classically designed holes, such as the par four 4th hole that has a cluster of Principal’s Nose bunkers in the center of the fairway that present strategic decisions, and the exacting par three 6th hole with a green that is almost completely surrounded by bunkers. Among the best holes on the back nine is the par five 10th where golfers must negotiate a stream that crosses the fairway to reach the green. The narrow fairways and well-guarded greens at Hendricks require both accurate and thoughtful play to add to golfers’ enjoyment at this hidden gem in Belleville.

Essex County Weequahic Park Golf Course is set on a beautifully rolling property. New bunkers have been added to the course through our renovations process that have greatly enhanced its strategic and visual appeal. Tucked in the corner of historic Essex County Weequahic Park, this is the first public course in New Jersey, having been designed by Baltusrol Golf Club professional George Low in 1913.

While Weequahic measures slightly less than 6,000 yards, the course offers an ideal golfing landscape and its small greens make low scoring difficult. Among the best holes on this lovely course are the uphill par five 3rd with two large bunkers carved in the hillside, as well as the long par four 16th that plays to the crest of this same hill and down to the green that is set in the base of its long slope.

The Essex County Environmental Center at Essex County West Essex Park is situated in a wooded wetland habitat with access to the Passaic River. This interesting and affordable education center offers naturalist-led field trips for school groups, scouts and community groups, as well as birthday parties for children and after school special interest clubs. The state-of-the-art facility also is available for booking community/family events and corporate business outings.

The Center’s environmental educational programs are carefully designed, with either a structured or unstructured format, to create opportunities for families to get outside and into the parks while having fun and learning in multiple subject areas. All Center programs encourage participants to think about environmental stewardship and natural habitats and, with this in mind, foster an appreciation for the natural world — parks, outdoor recreation, and ecological conservation. The Center offers nature- and science-based programming for toddlers through senior citizens, school groups, scout organizations, and the general public.

Three-Part Series: Stress Release Using Emotional Freedom Techniques Mondays, April 10, 17, 24 6:45pm-7:45pmFor adults. Most individuals feel stress in one or more areas of life. Relationships, work, health, spirituality, and finances commonly contribute to stress. Regardless of the cause, stress has serious effects on the body, and reducing it can lead to a healthier, happier experience of life. Participants will learn and use EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) to de-stress and to gain new perspectives and insights. Participants will use acupressure points to tap into areas of emotional stress. This modality is easy to learn and use and, once learned, can be used any time day or night. This class is suitable for beginners and those with no prior knowledge of EFT as well as those who know EFT and would like to benefit from the group dynamic. Essex County Riker Hill Art Park is a former United States Army Nike Missile Tracking Base. The 42-acre complex was purchased from the federal government for one dollar in 1974. The buildings, which once housed army facilities, have been transformed into 38 artist studios. Artists-in-residence work in various disciplines such as painting, fine metal jewelry, ceramics, pottery, glass-blowing, fine prints, photography, and sculpture.

Hours of OperationThe grounds at Riker Hill Art Park are open from dawn to dusk seven days a week.

Studio RentalsRates are set annually by county ordinance. In County residents may rent studio space on an annual basis for $6.00 per square foot. Out-of-county residents may rent studio space on an annual basis for $7.50 per square foot.
