South of Scotland, Border Country & Lothians

Dumfries & Galloway Gems Explore the beautiful, gentle landscape of Dumfries and Galloway, absorbing the region’s culture from historic castles and towns to art galleries and unusual wildlife. Highly accessible from the south, this area which stretches from the border to the Irish Sea is an undiscovered gem.

Day 1 Arrive at your hotel in Dumfries, “Queen of the South” and lively capital of the region. Visit the amazing Camera Obscura, one of only three working in Britain. Learn about the town’s famous connections with Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns: see his former house, favourite pub and final resting place.

Day 2 Familiarise yourself with the wider area with an early morning train from Dumfries north west to Kilmarnock through the Nith Valley, enjoying historic viaducts, tunnels and glimpsing the local mining heritage en route. The coach returns south along the stunning Ayrshire coast with notable attractions such as Culzean Castle and new Robert Burns Birthplace Museum. Return by the inland route through some glorious scenic countryside, stopping to see the world’s oldest post office in Sanquhar, or Britain’s highest village at Wanlockhead, with the option to take a trip on the Leadhills and Wanlockhead Railway, before heading back to Dumfries.

Day 3 Explore the Galloway heartland today, including the Red Kite Trail, Castle Douglas Food Town and the Colvend Coast. The first stop is the charming town of Kirkcudbright, a colourful combination of medieval, Georgian and Victorian buildings with a fine harbour overlooked by MacLellan’s Castle. Also known as the Artist’s Town, it is a magnet for art-lovers with a fine range of galleries. Castle Douglas is designated the region’s Food Town due to its market and farming traditions with an excellent selection of independently owned local shops, delis and cafés. Don’t miss nearby Threave Castle and Gardens. Gatehouse of Fleet, former thriving cotton and shipbuilding industrial centre, is best known for its film connection to The Wickerman. Scenic New Galloway by Loch Ken is Scotland’s smallest royal burgh, favoured by astronomers and enthusiasts alike, due to its clear, unpolluted skies. Finally appreciate the Solway Coast, infamous as a smuggling hotbed, and the Colvend Coast with its attractive villages of Kippford and Rockcliffe. Another touring option is to head south along the Rhinns of Galloway visiting Port Logan, setting of the fictional island of Ronansay in the BBC drama Two Thousand Acres of Sky, with nearby Botanic Garden, before reaching the most southern lighthouse in Scotland at the Mull of Galloway which boasts an excellent visitor centre and fantastic views over to Ireland, our destination for tomorrow.

Day 4 An early start today, heading west for the port of Cairnryan, gateway to Northern Ireland, where we board the fast ferry to Belfast to visit the new Titanic Experience. Located on the site of the great ship’s birthplace, experience the story over nine galleries drawing together special effects, rides, full-scale reconstructions and innovative interactive features. This vibrant city has much to offer from grandiose architecture, superb museums such as the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, magnificent Victorian pubs and splendid new shopping centres. Make the most of this day trip by dining on the return ferry.

Day 5 Time to depart, but the holiday isn’t over yet! Why not visit Gretna Green, its World Famous Old Blacksmiths Shop or Gateway Outlet Village, for a spot of retail therapy en route.

Ayrshire AdventureSituated on the beautiful Clyde Coast, Ayrshire has the essential ingredients for an ideal holiday destination: lovely scenery, fascinating history with links to William Wallace, Robert the Bruce and Robert Burns, not to mention its ancient castles, stunning country parks, bustling market towns and captivating visitor attractions.

Day 1 Arrive at your seaside hotel with time to promenade along the seafront before dinner. Day 2 Time to relax after the journey or browse the nearby shopping centres, before heading for Ayr Harbour to board

the world’s last ocean-going steamship, the Waverley, for an afternoon cruise round Ailsa Craig, a remarkable, natural, cone-shaped island wonder and volcanic plug, the source of granite used to make curling stones. It is also home to thousands of seabirds including a famous gannet colony. Enjoy breathtaking coastal scenery looking across to Arran, over to the Mull of Kintyre and even Northern Ireland on a clear day.

Day 3 A local touring day, south along the “Electric Brae” where downhill seems to be uphill! Castles dot the landscape with the highlight splendid Culzean Castle, then onto Turnberry with its famous, landmark lighthouse on the Championship Golf Course. Perhaps stop at one of the excellent farm shops for coffee, then a short hop from Stranraer to the delightful coastal village of Portpatrick in time for lunch, sitting outside one of the many pubs to admire the harbour views. In the afternoon, return by the inland route, including thatched House of Burns at Kirkoswald to buy some local treats or the new Robert Burns Birthplace Museum with trail to Burns’ Cottage, Auld Kirk and Brig o Doon at Alloway.

Day 4 Head north today up to Glasgow, city of style, for a panoramic tour including its Cathedral, nearby 15th century Provand’s Lordship, the oldest house in Glasgow, the University quarter and West End with recently refurbished, award winning Kelvingrove Museum & Art Galleries; or the new Riverside Transport Museum; not forgetting the Burrell Collection or Charles Rennie MacIntosh’s House for An Art Lover - you are quite simply spoilt for choice. In the city centre, there’s renowned shopping at Buchanan Galleries, Princes Square, St Enoch Centre and the Italian Centre. Another possibility is to continue north to Loch Lomond, before returning via the Clyde coastal route and the attractive seaside town of Largs, perhaps stopping for afternoon tea or an ice-cream at Nardini’s art deco café.

Muck, the smallest of the Small Isles, is great for walking and picnicking. Rum, the largest of the Small Isles, is best known for its Edwardian Castle. Eigg is a community owned island rich in arts and crafts, with its characteristic rocky top or Sgurr. This is the best way to appreciate the contrasts of these islands as well as the dramatic mainland coast, not to mention the opportunities for wildlife spotting from whales and porpoises to deer and wealth of sea birds. Savour a nightcap whilst admiring a stunning sunset over the islands.

Day 3 Bidding farewell to the white sands, take the short ferry journey over the sea to Armadale, Skye arriving in lush, green Sleat. Perhaps visit the Clan Donald Centre and Armadale Castle before venturing north to admire the Red and Black Cuillin Hills reaching as far as Sligachan or the attractive fishing village of Portree, which overlooks the small islands of Raasay and Rona between Skye and the mainland. Cross back to the mainland via the impressive bridge for the final leg of today’s journey. The scenery does not disappoint passing Eilean Donan Castle, then north to Achnasheen, the Corrieshalloch Gorge and Falls of Measach, before the loch opens up once again on the approach to picturesque Ullapool, the location of the hotel for the next two nights.

Day 4 Trace the sea lochs south along the coast to Poolewe to reach the gulf stream gardens of Inverewe. Regarded as one of the world’s greatest gardens, it sprang from the realisation of one man’s determination and his taste for the exotic. For many, visiting this beautiful, tranquil place is an unforgettable experience with extensive woodland comprising native and exotic trees; bird hide with extensive views over Loch Ewe; informal ponds surrounded by native and exotic plants; and the newest addition, a contemporary design of sundial. In the afternoon, continue the exploration of the coastal road past Gairloch and Torridon, marvelling all the while at the north west’s impressive mountainscape. Return to the hotel in time to explore Ullapool itself and enjoy a stroll before dinner.

Day 5 After a hearty breakfast, we begin the first leg of our journey south as far as Inverness for a refreshment stop and to see some of this fine City. Then it’s on through Cairngorm mountain country and Aviemore before traversing Perthshire and onto picturesque Perth itself for the last night of the tour. Time to discover this lively and historic town before dinner.

Day 6 Restored from travels and refreshed from this west coast adventure, head for home with fond memories of this remarkable part of the country.

Highland HighlightsA flexible two centre tour to discover the best Scotland has to offer from the Southern Highlands, north to Inverness-shire and the Grampian Highlands, with Perthshire and Royal Edinburgh on the return journey.

Day 1 Journey to the south of Scotland, taking in a short panoramic tour of Glasgow or a visit to Loch Lomond shores en route to Drymen, a delightful, cosy village base for two nights; or Crianlarich at the start of true Highlander country.

Day 2 All directions offer excellent touring possibilities: east to the Trossachs with the opportunity for a steamboat loch cruise; Stirling with its historic Castle, Town Jail and Wallace Monument; west to Loch Awe and the haunting ruins of 15th century Kilchurn Castle; picturesque Inveraray, its fine lochside Castle and Gardens; or north east to Loch Tay, Killin and the Falls of Dochart.

Day 3 Move to the second base for this tour in Inverness, perhaps breaking the coach journey with a breathtaking train journey on the Crianlarich to Fort William line. Alternatively, enjoy a dramatic drive through the mountain valley of Glencoe, past Fort William overshadowed by Ben Nevis and up the banks of Loch Ness. Why not enjoy a Loch Ness Cruise into Inverness itself including a visit to Urquhart Castle?

Day 4 A plethora of touring options await: either strike north to the picturesque Black Isle and Dornoch Firth coastline with stunning Dunrobin Castle; or east for a round trip along the Moray Firth and Elgin then into Speyside’s castle and whisky country, returning via the Cairngorm National Park; or west to the spectacular Corrieshalloch Gorge and Falls of Measach en route the pretty fishing village of Ullapool to explore some of Ross and Cromarty. Return by the coastal route past Inverewe Gardens then inland past the shores of Loch Maree before reaching Inverness once more.

Day 5 Begin the southerly journey today passing through the contrasting landscapes of the Grampian Highlands then onto the gentle, rolling countryside of Perthshire for the last night of the tour in Perth. Time to visit Scone Palace before check-in.

Day 6 A final highlight remains in store with a visit to Edinburgh: a panoramic tour to take in some of its highlights such as the Castle, Royal Mile, Royal Yacht Britannia and Palace of Holyrood House, before setting the compass for the homeward journey.

Day 1 Travel to base near Loch Lomond or in Crianlarich for the first two nights of the tour. Day 2 Setting the compass in any direction offers an excellent day’s touring. Day 3 Move on to the second part of the tour with a choice of onward destinations: west to Oban or even the Isle of Mull

If spending the next two nights on Mull, there is time to get to know this bustling fishing port before the scenic ferry over to the island. If opting for an onward base of Fort William why not incorporate the train from Crianlarich; and for Mallaig, the Jacobite Steam Train.

If staying in Fort William or Mallaig, take the short ferry to the Isle of Skye to wonder at its stunning Cuillin Hills, making a round trip back to the mainland over the Skye bridge, past the compulsory photo stop at Eilean Donan Castle then along the banks of Loch Ness back to base.

Western Isles WondersTwo superb island hopping options:

1. Unchained Melody - cross the entire chain of the Western Isles, staying two nights on Barra and two nights in Stornoway, routing outbound from Oban and returning via Ullapool.

2. Over the Sea to Skye and the Hebrides - a wonderful two centre tour combining two nights on Benbecula with two nights in Stornoway, including an outbound journey through Skye and returning via Ullapool.

Option 1. Unchained MelodyDay 1 Today we begin the northward journey, overnighting in Glasgow/Loch Lomond/Crianlarich, an ideal launching

point for this Outer Hebridean adventure. Day 2 Head for the bustling fishing port of Oban to catch the early afternoon ferry to the Isle of Barra. Appreciate some

spectacular coastal and island scenery en route, arriving at the family run Isle of Barra Beach Hotel, the most westerly in Britain, in time for dinner. Take an after-dinner stroll along the beautiful white sands of Tangasdale Beach on the Atlantic West Coast.

Day 3 Brought into the limelight by the TV programme Island Parish, Barra is considered one of the most beautiful small islands in Britain, offering serene, pristine, sandy beaches combined with an enthralling ancient history. Enjoy a gentle day’s exploration after yesterday’s journey and before tomorrow’s island hopping adventure. A memorable sunset is the perfect close to a magical day.

Day 4 Cross seven islands in one day: first of all, an early crossing to Eriskay, famous not only for its ponies but also for the real story behind Whisky Galore. Between Great Todday and Little Todday, the S.S. Politician ran aground in 1941 with 50,000 cases of whisky on board. A few hundred cases were saved by some of the local community before the ship sank, which stood their supplies in good stead for some time - Uisge Beatha! Then cross the causeway to South Uist with its marvellous west coast stretch of non-stop sandy beach and boasting impressive mountains to the east. Another causeway leads to Benbecula, a completely flat island which can hardly be glimpsed from the sea. Yet another links Benbecula with North Uist, an island largely comprising peat bog with low hills and lochans, more than half of which is covered by water making it an ideal bird habitat and ornothologists’ mecca. In the afternoon, cross the sound of Harris from Berneray to Leverburgh on the island of Harris which was made popular by the BBC Castaway programme won by Ben Fogle. After an hour’s pleasant sail, continue up the west coast past numerous breathtaking, white sandy beaches with turquoise water reminsicent of a Caribbean scene! Truly spectacular scenery greets our eyes as we start the final leg of today’s journey to our hotel in Stornoway. Recall some of the today’s wonders over a nightcap after dinner.

Day 5 Lewis, the largest of the Outer Hebridean islands, offers a wealth of fascinating touring. To the north is the Butt of Lewis Lighthouse and Port of Ness; on the west coast, visit the Blackhouse Village, Doune Carloway Broch and the magnificent Neolithic Callanish Stone Circle, reminiscent of Stonehenge and predating even the Egyptian Pyramids.

Day 6 A leisurely start with time to explore the town of Stornoway, before catching the early afternoon ferry to Ullapool, the perfect way to appreciate beautiful panoramas of Skye and the mainland with its characteristic mountain profile. Disembark and head south east towards the Grampian Highlands for the last overnight of the tour. Time to reminisce over the highlights of this remarkable tour which many will make only once in a lifetime.

Day 7 Bid farewell to the Highlands and continue on the homeward journey south through picturesque Perthshire, on through the Central Scotland, Stirling and into the Borders before heading for home.

Option 2. Over the Sea to Skye & the HebridesDay 1 Strike north en route for Fort William, the ideal

launching point for this island adventure to Skye and the Hebrides. Travel through some splendid countryside, up the Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond, then on through Glencoe before loch vistas open out on the approaches to Fort William.

Day 2 Head over the sea to Skye today, first travelling up by Loch Lochy then west past picturesque Eilean Donan Castle before crossing the Skye Bridge and onto the island with its magnificent Cuillin Hills. Time for a short refreshment stop in Sligachan or Portree before continuing north to Uig to catch the mid-afternoon ferry to Lochmaddy in the Outer Hebrides, a chain of islands stretching approximately one hundred and thirty miles. Make the short half hour drive to The Dark Island Hotel for the next two nights on the island of Benbecula.

Day 3 Explore Benbecula, North and South Uist today: first, travel through South Uist with its miles of white shell beaches and dunes. Hebridean traditions such as peat cutting, wool dying and seaweed gathering endure here as part of everyday life. From here, a short causeway leads to the tiny Isle of Eriskay, famous for its ponies and as the inspiration for the novel and film Whisky Galore. Enjoy the contrasts in the scenery of this world apart.

Day 4 A leisurely start before heading north to take the early afternoon ferry across the beautiful Sound of Harris from Berneray to Leverburgh. This area was featured on the BBC TV programme Castaway with its Caribbean turquoise seas and white sandy beaches. An hour later, arrive on the Isle of Harris with its dramatic mountain landscape before the final leg of the journey to Stornoway and the base for the next two nights at the island’s best known hotel, The Cabarfeidh overlooking Lewis Castle and set in its own grounds.

Day 5 – 7 As Option 1.

3★ Isle of Barra Hotel, Tangasdale, BarraThis family run, 39 bedroom hotel enjoys a uniquely idyllic west coast, island location. Royal Deeside, Grampian & Northern Highlands

Gateway to the Northern Isles Combine the lesser visited North West Highlands with the other-worldly Northern Isles for a tour of Scotland’s unspoilt, wildest regions.Day 1 Set the compass to north, reaching as far as travel time allows for the outbound overnight, ideally the

impressive Grampian Highlands or Inverness area. Day 2 Continue due north past the unspoilt beauty of both Moray and Dornoch Firths, perhaps visiting renowned

Glenmorangie Distillery en route. After refreshments, make a short detour to the Falls of Shin before continuing the final leg of the northbound journey past impressive cliff and coastal scenery, through the wild beauty of Caithness, perhaps glimpsing the characteristic profile of the west coast mountains in the distance. Time permitting, don’t miss a tour of the Old Pulteney distillery, Wick, which has some interesting stories to tell, then onto Thurso for the next three nights.

Day 3 The tour highlight today is a day trip to the Orkney Islands. At John O’ Groats, board Pentland Venture for the short crossing to the islands where a coach with driver/guide awaits for a fascinating tour featuring Scapa Flow, Stones of Stenness, Ring of Brodgar, Churchill Barriers, Italian Chapel and Skara Brae, the five thousand year old Stone Age village, plus free time in the island Capital of Kirkwall. A day to remember indeed!

Day 4 A quieter day’s touring with a visit to the Castle of Mey, the Queen Mother’s favourite and most northerly inhabited castle on the British mainland. She first saw former Barrogill Castle in 1952 while mourning the death of her husband, and, falling for its isolated charm decided to save and restore it as her summer retreat. Return to the hotel with time to pack in preparation for the next leg of the tour.

Day 5 Head west to Sutherland and Wester Ross via Durness with local attractions such as the Wax and Wine Shop which makes its own liqueurs and candles, or Balnakiel Craft Village, an outlet for local artists and craftspeople. Nearby are Cape Wrath, Scotland’s most north westerly mainland point, Smoo Cave and numerous dream-like pink sandstone bays. The area has a rare quality of untouched beauty. Trace the coast southwards past Scourie, glimpsing the Handa Island nature reserve with abundant seabird colonies. Nearing Ullapool and the hotel for the next two nights, marvel at the prominent mountain profiles such as Stac Pollaidh and Suilven to name but a few.

Day 6 Visit the gulf stream gardens of Inverewe, renowned for its exotic plants, or take a wildlife cruise from Ullapool in the beauty of Loch Broom to the Summer Isles to spot a variety of marine wildlife from seabirds to whales.

Day 7 Bid farewell to the North and begin the southbound journey, enjoying the spectacular Corrieshalloch Gorge and Falls of Measach en route. Continue south along the banks of Loch Ness, through Glencoe and past Loch Lomond before arriving at the last overnight of the tour on the Scottish border.

Day 8 Head for home having relished a truly different view of Scotland in all its unspoilt splendour.

the next four nights. Day 2 Spend a relaxing day exploring the local countryside and attractions: Blair Atholl Castle; the delightful town of

Pitlochry, its Festival Theatre, woollen mill and remarkable Salmon Ladder; the smaller villages of Blairgowrie, Dunkeld with historic Cathedral and Killiecrankie with its famous Pass. Dotted along the coast are picturesque fishing villages set in gentle rolling countryside.

place of study. Day 2 Explore the Kingdom and north to visit Glamis Castle near Forfar. Fife, although barely fifty miles wide, is a proud

region encompassing different areas with their own distinct identities. Always at the heart of the nation’s history, evidence lives on in its wealth of castles, cathedrals, and historic landmarks. Natural history thrives on the coast’s special environment and its offshore islands are home to protected seabirds. Dunfermline is a former capital of Scotland and the ‘Lang Toun’ of Kirkcaldy is Fife’s largest town. Other highlights are the historic village of Falkland with impressive ruined palace and charming market town of Cupar. In the northeast, the landscape varies from gentle rural hills to windswept cliffs, rocky bays and sandy beaches where scenes from Chariots of Fire were shot. The Royal Burgh of St Andrews, with its old fashioned ambience and home of world-famous Royal and Ancient golf club, draws most visitors. To the south are the tiny stone harbours of the East Neuk’s fishing villages. This Kingdom will live long in the memory.

Day 3 Enjoy a sight-seeing packed day in the Capital: Edinburgh Castle, Palace of Holyrood House, Royal Yacht Britannia, National Gallery, Royal Mile plus superb shopping in Princes Street. Why not combine this tour with a trip to the Military Tattoo?

Day 4 Uncover the delights of Perthshire and the Central Southern Highlands with visits to Scone Palace, once the crowning place of Scottish Kings and rightful home of celebrated national treasure, the Stone of Destiny; or the Royal stronghold of Stirling Castle, with its turbulent history associated with great figures such as William Wallace, Robert the Bruce and Mary Queen of Scots; other nearby touring options are the Trossachs, Crieff’s Famous Grouse Experience at Glenturret Distillery or the Falkirk Wheel, a splendid feat of canal engineering.
