Spectacular weather and our gorgeous season is here! The golf courses, COVID and all, are seeing a 25%

increase in play, and the tennis courts are full! As we alltry to live our lives to the fullest, we continue to try tomake the very best of life as it is today. Safely and ashealthy as possible, these sports offer great fitness andsanity. Fortunately golf and tennis are able to be playedwithout the hardship of social distancing.

In this edition, we are asking, almost begging, ourreaders to please support the local businesses andespecially restaurants in our community. Many of ourfavorite places are literally on the brink of extinctionwithout all of us supporting them. You will find a smalldirectory of some of our favorite dining optionsthroughout the valley beginning on page 40. We wereonly able to feature a small percentage of the manyamazing restaurant options we all have, however, we willcontinue to include other dining options as we continueto publish.

Of course, we too are extremely grateful for oursupporters and hope and pray that this pandemic losesits grip on all of us, both here in the desert andthroughout the world. There are so many that havebeen unable to operate or open and we must get throughthis together.

With the world-class BNP Paribas postponed againthis year, until hopefully sometime in October of 2021,we thought we should continue to feature tennis andshowcase some of the elite men’s players working to wintheir first major. Our cover feature provides you withsome information on some of the world’s top contendershoping to breakthrough.

Also in this edition are the memorials of two of our“own” that have passed and are now with our Lord.World famous Luigi Serra, our own beloved “littleItalian” was far from little in the world of photography.Having photographed some of the largest events aroundthe world for more than 45 years, Luigi will be terriblymissed by us all and in our future publications as will wemiss his amazing coverage of tennis.

We lost another star and super supporter of thispublication, Kipp Downing. Downing, an amazingrestauranteur, family man and amazing friend to DesertGolf & Tennis for many years lost his long battle withcancer in December 2020. Downing owned andoperated two of the valley’s best restaurants for the past20 years, Pacifica Seafood in Palm Desert and the popularLa Quinta Cliffhouse in LaQuinta, CA and recently soldthe Pacifica Del Mar in Del Mar California. We will missthese amazing people terribly and wanted to honor bothof them in this publication. Please see our heartfeltcoverage of these two amazing people beginning on page20.

This past year, 2020, has been extremely humblingand we hope to be able to continue to publish and bringto you, Desert Golf & Tennis for many years to come. Wethank our subscribers and advertisers for their supportand hope that you enjoy this publication as much as weenjoy putting it together.

We hope and pray that you will all remain healthyand joy the golf and tennis lifestyle that our spectaculardesert has to offer.

As everyone in the tennis industrycontinues to welcome a new yearwith opened arms—cautiously

optimistic about the upcoming season inthe midst of the global pandemic—one factremains clear: the future of tennis isdefinitely in good hands.

Without question, tennis’s future starsare, despite their youth, fully prepared forthe challenges of Grand Slamtournaments, as evidenced by their resultslast season, with major winners rangingfrom 19-year-old Iga witek (FrenchOpen) and 21-year-old Sofia Kenin(Australian Open), to 23-year-old NaomiOsaka (US Open) and 27-year-old DominicThiem (US Open). And they’re certainlyup to the challenges of competing one-on-one with tennis’s biggest names: NovakDjokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal andSerena Williams, among others.

But there is an even younger group ofup and comers that tennis professionals, commentators and fans should be awareof—rising male stars that have the ability tocarry the mantle as legends like Djokovic,Federer and Nadal prepare for the lastchapters of their careers. Ranging from 25-year-old Australian Nick Kyrgios and 19-year-old American Brandon Nakashima, to22-year-old Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas and23-year-old German Alexander Zverev, these four talents will soon prove thattennis’s future (despite the uncertainties ofthe last few months, due to COVID-19)remains as bright as ever.

Nick Kyrgios: A $9 Million WinnerA former world number one as a

junior, Nick Kyrgios has since won sixATP tournaments, while also reachingeight ATP finals overall. Ranked in the top50 in the world ranking, Kyrgios hascompiled a singles record of 161-95 so far,won nearly $9 million in prize money andreached the quarterfinals of the 2014Wimbledon Championships and the2015 Australian Open.

Only the third player to defeatDjokovic, Federer and Nadal the first time

he competed against each of them,Kyrgios also has one doubles title, as hehas a 41-43 record so far. Born in Australiain 1995, Kyrgios also achieved GrandSlam success as a junior, winning the boys’singles event at the 2013 AustralianOpen and the boys’ doubles event at the2013 Wimbledon Championships.

Brandon Nakashima: Leaving College toBecome a Professional

A winner of two ITF singles titles,Brandon Nakashima was a student at theUniversity of Virginia, where he compileda 17-5 singles record and a 20-3 doublesrecord, was named the ACC Freshman ofthe Year and received All ACC First Teamand All ACC Academic Team honors. Andthen, after just one highly successfulsemester, he decided to forego the rest ofhis eligibility and become a professional.

To some, the decision may have beenviewed as a bit premature, as he could havefinished his college career, earned his

bachelor’s degree and compiled morecollegiate victories, prior to becoming aprofessional. However, Nakashima hassince proven that his decision was indeedcorrect, as he received a wild card to theDelray Beach Open—his first ever ATPmain draw event—and reached thequarterfinals. He has since reached the top200 of the world rankings too.

“I want to take my game to the nextlevel and hopefully win an ATPtournament,” he says. “I am really lookingforward to [this] year.”

Stefanos Tsitsipas: Quickly Ascending the RankingsBorn in Athens in 1998, Stefanos Tsitsipas won his first ATP

match in 2017. From there, he began to quickly ascend in theworld rankings, ultimately reaching a career high ranking of No. 5

in 2019 (he was No. 6 as recently as November 2020). This quickascent in the rankings was primarily due to his consistency, as he hascompiled a career record of 133-76 so far, won 5 ATP titles andreached the semifinals at the 2019 Australian Open and the 2020French Open.

A former world number one as a junior, Tsitsipas also reachedthe quarterfinals of all four junior Grand Slam tournaments andwon Wimbledon in doubles, thereby becoming the first Greekmale to win a junior Grand Slam in the Open era. In addition to allof these successes, he’s also the youngest player to defeat Djokovic,Federer and Nadal—doing so before he was 21 years old.

Alexander Zverev: Preparing for Grand Slam VictoriesCompiling a 251-125 singles record so far, Alexander Zverev

has also ascended to nearly the top of the world rankings, reachinga career high of No. 3 in 2017 (and ranking No. 7 as recently asNovember 2020). A former world number one as a junior, Zverevwon a junior Grand Slam singles title at the 2014 Australian Open,a sign of what was to come.

A winner of 13 career singles tiles, he has also finished runner-up at a Grand Slam (the 2020 US Open, after reaching his firstGrand Slam final) and been praised by the likes of Djokovic andNadal, who consider him to be a future star.

“I’m only 23 years old,” he adds. “I do believe I will be a GrandSlam champion at some point.”

On December 29, 2020, representatives of the BNP ParibasOpen announced that the tournament, which wasoriginally scheduled to be held on March 8-21, 2021,

would be rescheduled to a new date. After consulting thoroughly with California’s state and local

health authorities, Larry Ellison, owner of the BNP Paribas Open, decided it was in the best interests of players, broadcasters, advertisers, employees and fans to postpone the tournament—which was cancelled altogether last March when the pandemicbegan in full force—due to continuous concerns with COVID-19.

As of early January, a new date for the tournament had not yetbeen decided, but representatives appeared to be clear that itwould still be hosted this year.

“The tournament is proactively working with the ATP andWTA Tours, as well as title sponsor BNP Paribas, to confirm dateslater in the year to hold the event,” tournament representativesmentioned in a statement published on BNPParibasOpen.com.“Details will be released in the near future as plans are finalized.”

“As soon as the new dates are confirmed, the tournament willprovide more information to current ticket holders, includingcredit and refund options,” the statement continued.

Safety FirstKnown as the “fifth major”, the BNP Paribas Open has taken a

variety of measures to ensure everyone involved with thetournament is as safe as possible once the tournament is actuallycontested. First, it has implemented various social distancingprotocols, based on present guidelines. In addition, an array ofsafety precautions will occur at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, each of which will be focused on attendants’ health, above all else.

“As we prepare to host the BNP Paribas Open, our team at theIndian Wells Tennis Garden has one priority above all else: to

ensure the health and safety of everyone involved with the event—fans, players, sponsors, media, vendors and staff,” tournamentrepresentatives stated on BNPParibasOpen.com.

“With that as our guiding principle, we will continue to consultwith a committee of expert advisors that includes tennis industrystakeholders, medical professionals, government officials and safetyprofessionals to make the best decisions possible in the lead-up tothe event,” tournament representatives added during their onlinestatement.

The tournament representatives stressed that they realized theon-site experience will be altered considerably once thetournament is held—alterations that will require cooperationfrom every attendant.

“We are committed to creating an environment that will alloweveryone to feel safe and secure in attending the BNP Paribas Open;it is our collective responsibility to help keep each other safe,”tournament representatives added on BNPParibasOpen.com.

As evidenced by the event’s typical attendance statistics (up to450,000 fans have been attending the tournament annually lately)and prize money (more than $17 million), the BNP Paribas Openhas not only become one of the most popular tournaments intennis, but in all sports, likely a primary reason why Ellison had nochoice but to reschedule it.

“We’re proud that the BNP Paribas Open has become a favoriteof players and fans alike,” tournament representatives said onBNPParibasOpen.com. “But we know that right now, it’s not aboutus; it’s about what we can do to ensure that everyone can feel safeand [is] excited to return to Tennis Paradise.”

The Economic Influence of CancellationsIn 2017, the BNP Paribas Open generated an estimated gross

economic impact of $406,602,107 on the Coachella Valley

regional economy, according to a studyconducted by The George WashingtonUniversity. In comparison to 2014’s figures, the year in which the last BNP ParibasOpen economic impact study had beencompleted, total gross economic impacthad risen by more than $32 million.

In a little over ten years, from 2006(another year in which the study wasconducted) to 2017, total gross economic

impact increased by more than $187million. This increase is even morenoticeable when the inf luence of IndianWells Tennis Garden’s renovations (on the2017 BNP Paribas Open) are considered, raising gross economic impact to$466,943,364.

Not to mention, the total fiscal impactof the tournament on the Coachella Valleywas estimated at roughly $19 million,

according to The George WashingtonUniversity study; this total was generatedthrough tax revenues for city and countygovernments, particularly throughproperty and sales taxes, along withTransient Occupancy Tax.

In addition, nearly 440,000 fansattended the tournament in 2017, a totalthat has since regularly risen toapproximately 450,000 annually. Eighty-seven percent of all attendees had traveledfrom outside of the region, a primary factorof the tournament’s high gross economicimpact.

With these figures in mind, theeconomic losses, directly resulting fromthe cancellation of the 2020 BNP ParibasOpen, were detrimental—likely evenhigher than the $406 million that wasgenerated in 2017. Therefore, Ellison likelyhas no choice but to host the tournamentlater this year, especially as other ATP andWTA tournaments have remain scheduledfor the first few weeks of 2021.

Although Ellison’s decision may not beknown for months, there’s no doubt aboutthis: the BNP Paribas Open’s return to thetennis circuit will be wholly welcomed byworldwide fans, along with CoachellaValley residents, as Tennis Paradise’scomeback can’t begin soon enough._______________________________

As news of renowned tennis photographer Luigi Serra’spassing went out, tributes and statements of great sadnesspoured in from across the globe. This was a man beloved

by so many—in the Coachella Valley, Chicago, New York, Italy, infact, it seems, wherever he went.

The term “legendary” is not an overstatement of hisextraordinary skill and accomplishments as a photographer.

The 79-year-old succumbed to complications of COVID-19 inChicago on Dec. 9, 2020. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie, andsons, Alessandro and Gianluca, all of them at his side when hepassed away. He is also survived by his grandchildren Isabella,Daniela, Lexi, Gabriella and Vincent, and by his brother Robertoand sister Maria Luisa.

“Luigi was an exuberant, creative Italian who loved his familyand his friends—and he considered everyone his friend,” says hiswife, Bonnie Serra. “Luigi was very fortunate to be able to make acareer out of his two passions, tennis and photography. His deathhas left a hole in the heart of his family.”

Born in Mantova, Italy, and raised in Florence, Serra came to theUnited States in his mid 20s. For nearly three decades he worked asan electrical engineer specializing in the design of nuclear powerplants before retiring and giving himself the time and space topursue tennis and photography. Although he photographed othersports, tennis was his true love, and for 45 years he photographedall of the important tournaments across the globe fromWimbledon to the U.S., French and Australian Opens. His strikingimages of many of the world’s greatest stars and up-and-comingplayers captured the raw power, grace and intensity of on-courtplay. Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray,Serena and Venus Williams, Maria Sharapova, Flavia Pennetta,Simona Halep, Bianca Andreescu and Taylor Fritz are among theathletes so brilliantly portrayed by his expert eye and lens.

In the Coachella Valley he was a stalwart at the BNP ParibasOpen, an ATP Masters 1000 tournament played at Indian WellsTennis Garden, and his photos of that tournament as well as manyother important contests and players provided the visuals for

tennis coverage in Desert Golf & Tennis, a publication that likelywould not have ever included tennis if not for Luigi Serra.

Tim Pade, desert resident and publisher of the magazine, saysthat it was Serra, along with fellow Italian Piero Pierattoni, founder of popular Palm Desert eateries Mamma Gina andPizzaVino, who convinced him to expand the magazine, thenknown as Desert Golf, into a two-sport publication for which Serra

would supply the photographs of all the great tennis players andtournaments. That’s exactly what he did. His first image for thenewly renamed Desert Golf & Tennis was of tennis great RafaelNadal, which appeared on the cover of the February-March 2014issue. His photos have appeared in every issue and on multiplecovers to this day.

Serra split his time between the Coachella Valley and Chicagowhen he wasn’t traveling all over the world to cover tournaments orto visit his beloved home town of Florence. In its obituarychronicling the life of the photographer, the Chicago Tribuneechoed what every other tribute and obituary noted: “Luigi livedlife to the fullest and went out of his way to make everyone he metfeel valued. He was the life of the party and will be missed by manyall over the world.”

He was by all accounts one of a kind and the kind of friend any ofus would be grateful to have . In addition to friends and family leftbehind, Serra also leaves the world, especially the sports world, alegacy of exquisite, powerful images of the men and women whoplay tennis on courts across the globe, and of singular momentsthat define athletic prowess. Fortunately, those will be with usforever.

At the request of his family, friends and admirers can honor LuigiSerra by donating in his name to www.toptennischicago.comto support the Luigi Serra Scholarship Fund, or tohttp://wewill.northwestern.edu/lurie to support the nurses andcaregivers at the Robert H. Palm Desert and La Quintarestaurateur Kipp RobertDowning passed away on Dec. 30,

2020, following a hard-fought battlewith NET (neuroedocrine tumors), arare form of cancer. He leaves his wife,Jacquee Renna-Downing; daughtersJulia, Olivia and Matlin; stepdaughtersJamie, Hailey and Drew; sister Jan Kingand brother Kirk Downing.

Born July 5, 1948 in Boulder,Colorado, Downing attended theUniversity of Colorado where hisparents had met years before. Hegraduated from the university’s LeedsSchool of Business and ultimately turnedhis attention to running restaurants. Hefirst opened Café Pacifica in 1980 in theSan Diego area, followed by Pacifica DelMar and Pacifica Grille. In 2001 heopened his first restaurant in theCoachella Valley, Pacific SeafoodRestaurant in Palm Desert, followed byLa Quinta Cliffhouse Grill & Bar in 2012.He was a dual resident of San Diego andLa Quinta.

It was through his restaurants thatDowning became a longtime advertisingsupporter of Desert Golf & Tennis, arelationship that made perfect senseconsidering Downing’s legendarypassion for the game of golf. A memberof The Palms Golf Club and The Club atPGA West, both in La Quinta, he livedand breathed golf. “His days off, hisvacations, his relationships all centeredaround golf,” says his wife, Jacquee. “Heplayed all over the world. He was a greatteacher as well. When he wasn’t in therestaurants, he was on the golf courseuntil he was no longer able to play.”

Jacquee and Kipp had been togetherfor several years and married for just alittle over a year, though their storyactually began some 30 years ago whenthey first dated. It just wasn’t their timeback then, Jacquee says. They went off indifferent directions. Both got marriedand both had three daughters. But whenthe marriages started to fall apart, shenotes, “We found each other again.”

Jacquee ran the restaurants withDowning for multiple years and willcontinue on at Pacifica and La QuintaCliffhouse. But she will greatly miss herpartner. “He had a vision of hospitalitythat was centered around making

everyone—guests and his team—feelspecial. He was the kindest individualever, never a judgment about people. Hewas very accepting of people and he was agreat mentor. He mentored many ofthose who worked for him to go on andopen their own restaurants. He also haspeople who followed him fromrestaurant to restaurant, who worked forhim for 30 years. He was that kind ofperson.”

He was also, she adds, a greatstoryteller with a wonderful sense ofhumor, even though it could be a littledark at times. But above all else, she says,“Above all, he loved his family.”

Although Kipp Downing ultimatelylost his battle with cancer, he firmlybelieved that the doctor he worked withat City of Hope extended his life by somethree years and he was profoundlygrateful for that time. His wish was thatthose who want to do something tohonor him make a donation in his nameto City of Hope, Dr. Li, Research forNeuroendocrine Tumor. “The Coachella Valley has been verysupportive of this tournament for half acentury, and the ability to contribute to thepeople here and many of the local charitiesthat help those in need is an important partof this tournament,” Mickelson said at thestart of the event. “It’s an important part ofthe game of golf, and I’m appreciative thatwe’re able to continue it, even in this time ofa pandemic.”

Additional highlights of this year’sAmerican Express included a somewhatbizarre moment on Friday when MarkHubbard unleashed a social-media-worthymove called “The Snail,” involving a putter, the sudden arc of one arm diving down theshaft and theatrical pinky f lourish justabove the putter head—all after whatappeared to be a perfectly normal setup. The broadcasters guffawed and replayedthe putt multiple times while some prosand fans took to Twitter. If only the four-footer had dropped.

Although Cantlay ultimately didn’tultimately prevail in the tournament, hehas little to regret. “I thought I would havea chance at a playoff,” he said after fallingjust short of his fourth career victorydespite a phenomenal round of 61, hisbest career round as a pro. “I played aboutas good as I can possibly play.”

Cantlay’s four rounds of 69-71-65-61not only gave him the 2nd place finish atThe American Express, it moved him up

to the No. 2 spot in the FedEx Cuprankings.

Kim posted rounds of 66-68-67-64 forhis win, and in spite of appearing entirely

unf lappable throughout the tournament,he may have been a bit more nervous thanhe seemed. “I couldn’t sleep last night,” hesaid just after his win. “Today, I just kepttrying to think positive, not be tooaggressive and just keep calm.”

The 2021 American Express is Kim’sthird win on the PGA Tour and first since2017 when the then 21-year-old becamethe youngest player ever to win the PlayersChampionship. Asked about that dry spell,he said it’s been a long three-and-a-halfyears. This victory should now put it out ofhis mind.

Perhaps most important for fans and forthe game of golf, the 2021AmericanExpress was a success. Pros played andcharities benefited. That bodes well for therest of the PGA Tour schedule and golf fanseverywhere regardless of the pandemic.

Si Woo Kim 2021 Champion

For a short time on Sunday it looked like a playoff was in thecards, between rock-steady South Korean Si Woo Kim, whohad three bogey-free rounds and had been in contention

almost from the start, and Californian Patrick Cantlay, who barelymade the cut and was tied for 56th when the third round began.Cantlay’s spectacular rise to the top of Sunday’s leaderboard camethanks to weekend play that included 20 birdies—more than inany other non-Major tournament. When he walked off the green inthe final round, he held a solo lead at 22 under, posting a brilliant 61and 11 under for the day.

But that wasn’t enough to stop Kim, described by onecommentator as “a machine” moving through the course. Laserfocused and calm, Kim exhibited only a couple of brief f lashes ofemotion, including a blink-and-you-missed-it fist pump after hissecond birdie of the last three holes dropped in to move him aheadof Cantlay. All that was left was to remain focused and make par on18. He did exactly that in almost textbook fashion, placing his finaldrive from the challenging 18th tee well down the fairway, followedby a solid 8-iron to the green and two putts for a near-perfect par.

Australian Cameron Davis also put on a good show on Sunday, notching a career-best third, followed by Tony Finau who startedthe fourth round sharing the top of the leaderboard but faded, ending with a solo fourth place.

Never really in contention were defending champion AndrewLandry (T64) and tournament ambassador and host PhilMickelson, who failed to make the -4 cut on Friday, thoughMickelson did one thing he’d never done before in his 29-yearcareer—make 18 consecutive pars in one round.

While the breathtaking successes and shocking fails oftournament play were just what we expect, much else about the2021 American Express was not. The fairways weren’t lined withspectators, there was no pro-am tournament and there were justtwo courses in play rather than three. But charity, a cornerstone ofthis event that has changed names and title sponsor multiple timesover many years, was as front-and-center as ever, albeit in acompletely new format.

The first-ever Charity Challenge, hosted by Mickelson, tookplace on Wednesday prior to the start of competition with afoursome of celebrities and Tour pros who competed to donate tochosen local charities. Tony Finau, World No. 22, partnered withformer pro soccer superstar Landon Donovan, and Paul Casey,World No. 27, partnered with country-music star Jake Owen. When all was said and done, Casey ad Owen earned $660,000 for“health and wellness” charities while Finau and Donovan raised$340,000 for “youth development and education” charities—$1million in total.

Why is Scotland such a great golfingarena? Because it has many of the greatestlinks golf courses in the world. Links is thepurest form of golf and is how the gameoriginated some 600 years ago. There are afew golf destinations in Scotland, butperhaps the most famous are the links tobe found in or nearby to St Andrews. TheOld Course at St Andrews is a prime targetfor those making the pilgrimage.Kingsbarns, too, is on most golfers’ bucketlist as a ‘must play’.

However, ‘the new kid on the block’which opened last summer to rave reviewsis Dumbarnie Links, a 20-minute drivesouth of The Old Course. I was veryprivileged to be involved in this project asFounder and Designer of the golf course.Presented with a stunning, genuine linkssite stretching along a mile and a half ofwaterfront, combined with the landowner, Lord Balniel’s blessing, allowed usto utilize 345-acres of his 5000-acreBalcarres Estate and produce a genuinelinks that looks as if it has been there formore than 100 years.

Having only been open since late May2020, LINKS magazine recently rated itamongst their ‘Five Courses in Europethat should Host The Ryder Cup’.“Bunkered” is an international magazine,

and said “It’s impossible to pick a favoritehole. They are all absolutely spectacular.”In all, to date we have had 35 featurearticles in national and international golfmagazines, a number of which are

tapping Dumbarnie Links to be includedin the World’s Top 100.

So, what makes Dumbarnie Links sospecial and worth a visit on your next tripto Scotland? It is an unusual site in that itcomprises two elevations connected by agentle, sweeping escarpment. All 18 holes

have far-reaching, panoramic views acrossthe 11-mile stretch of the Firth of Forth tofamous landmarks like Muirfield, NorthBerwick and the city of Edinburgh. Golfersdescribe the views at Dumbarnie Links as‘stunning’. These panoramic views arecontrary to many of the old, classic linkswhich have a tendency to run ‘out andback’, where their fairways hide under thecoastal dunes giving the golfer someshelter, but only scant views of the water.

The course at Dumbarnie Links is veryplayable for all standards of golf. There isfurther intrigue with a number of ‘risk andreward’ holes where the golfer can gamblein an effort to pick up a birdie. For instance, although the course ranges from 5,300yards to 6,900 yards – with a set ofprofessional tees bumping the yardage upto 7,600 yards – the course includes threepotentially driveable Par-4 holes. In orderto reach the green on these holes, or comeclose, the ‘risk’ is tempting in order to gainthe ‘reward’. There are also holes with twinfairways where the direct line generallygives a fairway of 25-yards or less in width. The safe line tends to offer fairways of 45-50 yards in width. However, the safe linealways plays very much longer. The 5th

hole at Dumbarnie is a prime example, where a large nest of bunkers separates thetwin fairways. The first time I played it, I hitgood drives down both fairways. For the

direct line I hit drive and 9-iron, but this linehas a narrow, well protected fairway. Forthe safe line I hit drive and 4-iron to the 45-yard wide fairway. So, golfers may choosetheir own poison!

Our superintendent, Grahame Taylor(formerly at The Old Course, St Andrews)together with his team nurtured thecourse during grow-in and it was broughtinto play in simply spectacular condition inMay 2020.

One of the fascinations of links golf, and itis well demonstrated at Dumbarnie, is thefact that because of large, smooth apronsaround the green, the golfer may receivesome assistance allowing the ball to collectonto the green. On the other hand, there arealso some dells and hollows around theputting surfaces. Because of the smoothnessof these large aprons, players might opt touse anything from a utility club to a sandwedge for their approach. The options areendless when playing links golf.

Dumbarnie Links is ready and waitingto welcome you on your next visit toScotland. We invite you to visit ourwebsite at www.dumbarnielinks.com

3rd hole – Par-4 / 310 yards

There’s no question that COVID has negatively impactedthe Coachella Valley. With both Coachella and the BNPParibas Open cancelled in 2020, to say nothing of dozens of

other festivals, tournaments and events that traditionally bringtourists, fans and dollars into the region, the economy took a hit.

How much of a hit isn’t fully known because we have no way ofknowing how many people would have attended these events andhow much money they would have spent. However, two 2017economic impact studies provide working estimates.

The 2017 BNP Paribas Open economic impact study, conducted by George Washington University, the last onecompleted to date, showed that the tournament generated morethan $406 million for the valley—a $32 million increase from the2014 study. Given the tournament’s track record, it stands toreason that the 2018 event brought in even more.

The combined economic impact of the 2017 Coachella festivaland 2017 Stagecoach Country Music Festival was more than $403million according to a report from the Greater Palm SpringsConvention and Visitors Bureau (GPSCVB).

Not surprising, the No. 1 industry in Greater Palm Springs istourism in all its forms. According to the GPSCVB, tourismgenerates $7.5 billion in business sales and contributes an estimated$687 million in state and local taxes—the equivalent of $4,031 intax savings for every local household—and $517.8 million in federaltaxes. Additionally, one in five jobs is sustained by the tourismindustry with the area welcoming an estimated 14.1 million dayand overnight visitors each year.

Back in May, before we were hit with surges and the resultingincreased spread of the virus, GPSCVB estimated that lost visitorrevenue in the valley would total at least $3.7 billion and a loss ofmore than 24,000 jobs. What those actual 2020 totals are has yetto be announced.

And the negative impacts have not yet ended. So far in 2021, thePalm Springs International Film Festival has been cancelled,Modernism Week will be virtual, and the BNP Paribas Open,Coachella and Stagecoach Country Music festivals have all beenpostponed until October.

All that said, there are bright spots. If the vaccine rolloutimproves, it’s likely that the BNP Paribas Open will be contested in

the fall and the major music festivals will run, bringing in thousandsof fans and dollars in the fourth quarter. The American Express golftournament already went forward, albeit without fans, but withplayers, sportscasters, photographers and ancillary staff in town forthe event.

And there’s more good news. In mid-December the Wall StreetJournal reported that since the pandemic began, there’s been a bigjump in demand for homes in golfing communities, which shouldbe a boon for the golf-centric Coachella Valley. According to thearticle, it isn’t just the golf that home buyers are attracted to; it’s alsothe open green spaces and the potential for socializing once thepandemic subsides, all of which Greater Palm Springs has in spades.

In fact, golf communities are looking better and better even asthe pandemic marches on. Why? Because golf is one of the fewactivities people can participate in together outside whileremaining socially distanced from one another. According toreports by Golf Datatech and the National Golf Foundation citedin the Wall Street Journal article, approximately 10 million morerounds of golf were played in August 2020 than in the same monththe previous year.

All of that bodes well. And with at least some good newsalready on the books, it’s not surprising that Scott White, president& CEO of the Greater Palm Springs Convention & Visitors Bureau,is optimistic. He not only sees a more positive near future, calling2021 a turnaround year for the region, he also points out that therewere some positives in 2020, too.

“The pandemic has brought our community together and localcollaboration has never been greater. This makes us stronger as wehead into the future,” White says. “Tourism is the No. 1 industry forthe region, and everyone is working together to ensure our visitorsare safe and our businesses are prepared for the return of travel. Ourdestination is fortunate to have world-class hotels and resorts withkey outdoor activities such as golf, tennis, cycling, hiking andmore. We are very optimistic about the future as more people lookto sunny resort destinations like ours to decompress and getoutdoors. And,” he adds, “the recent addition of Southwest Airlineswill make it much easier and more affordable to visit us.”

37DesertGolf&tennis • februaryMarch2021

Today’s golf topic is “set up - posture”. As golfers we sometimesforget how the basics set up effects the golf swing.

I have a few photos to help visualize the feel of these set upextremes. You can check your set up in a mirror at home.

This is my 7 iron view from the back-down the target line. Here are a few key set up basics to keep an eye out for: bow, knee

f lex & grip distance from the thigh.

Bow- hinge forward: I have golfers stand in an straight stance & work on the “bow to

the ball”. Some golfers call this the “bow or hinge forward”. Keyshere are: bending at the hips NOT the middle of the back, NOTfrom the neck. I feel like for most golfers (if you start from a lockedleg upright position & 2 clicks forward bowIng toward the ball youwill get you there). Then slightly “unlock the knees”.

Don’t “sit” on the wall (photo for visual), bow forward away fromwall.

If your posture is too upright, (or too much sitting) top shots orhigh right or low left will be your result. It will many times NOTallow for the hips to turn & you feel like you are constricted in theturn.

Knee Flex: The knees only need to be bent (or unlocked) to the middle of

the laces on the shoes. Many golfers have TOO much knee f lex(or knees out to the end of your golf shoes). Be careful for toomuch knee f lex, this drops your hips / butt down & can get yourback / posture into a “C” or too rounded position. Which results

many times in the grip too far from the thigh & sometimes griptoo high.

Miss hits with too much knee f lex can cause: over the top, slide, sway, top shots, thin shots, and lack of distance.

Grip distance from the ball: I do the bow & the knee f lex FIRST then the grip distance from

the thigh last.

Here are a few guidelines:Wedges: (chipping & pitching) 3-4” from the thigh (super close

feel for control)

Irons: 4-6” or 1 palm width from the thigh (Arm feels like it isstraighter down from the shoulders, dangling in a relaxed feel state)

Woods: 6-8” distance from the thigh. Arm feels like it is at asight angle (under the chin) because of the longer shaft

I would recommend to check your arm distance in a mirror. Many golfers are too far away from the ball with this radius. If yourarm hang is too far from your thigh: falling forward to your toes, lack of turn, lack of distance, lack of power can happen.

If your arm hang is too high or too stiff, top shots, elbows start tobend too much (f lying elbow & chicken wing), over the top pathcan happen.

Keep working on your set up in the mirror & you will feel amore solid swing.

Using 1 hand as “measuring “the correct distance away

Correct 7 iron posture (not correct) arms Too far fromthigh

(not correct) too much sitting &weight too much on the heals

Shifts in real estate market trends have been just one of thecountless ways the events of 2020 have changed our lives andare continuing to shape our future. We have seen home

prices soar and inventories shrink in the Coachella Valley as buyersin increasing numbers find our Desert environment a great optionfor added space, outdoor living experience, and work-from-homeschedules.

The terrific weather and myriad of outdoor activities has longmade Coachella Valley a haven for second home buyers, but higherrents, lower interest rates, work-from-home schedules, andinvestment opportunities are driving an inf lux of first-timeMillennial buyers to our area. With a tight inventory, it is notuncommon to see multiple offers on a property within a day or twoof coming on the market.

In my 20 years of selling real estate in the Desert, I have neverseen the inventory this low. For example, in PGA WEST, at thistime of year, we typically see between 120 and 170 homes on themarket. As of today, there are 39. If you are considering selling yourhome, there has never been a better time.

Although the real estate industry evolves each year, myprediction is that in 2021 we will see more of the same. While itmay be advantageous for sellers to seize the opportunity in gettingtop dollar for their homes, their options of buying another home, and making a profit on the transaction, are limited, if they are to

remain in the Desert or move to other popular non-citydestinations as inventories are low in those areas too. Meanwhile, Ifeel median home sale prices will maintain a 10% or higher increaseyear over year.

Another factor to the market is builders are expected toincrease single-family home production in 2021 which willeventually expand selection and inventories. Interest rates areanticipated to rise slightly but remain historically low for homebuyers. Additionally, the new Administration is likely to ensure taxcredits for first-time home buyers which will also fuel the housingmarket boom in our area.

While California will continue to experience a high percentageof exodus overall, the beauty, tranquility and outdoor lifestyle ofDesert living will retain its attraction for both first- and second-timehome buyers. 2020 has taught us that we can be efficient andeffective working from home, giving us more time to enjoy eachprecious hour. What better way to do that than from yourgorgeous indoor/outdoor living space surrounded by majesticmountain ranges and drenched in warm sunshine?

The newest Mustang surprises, inspires and shocks thoseexpecting a sedan in line with the Shelby fastback of the1960s. If a purest will give it a chance, they may be more in

love than ever. A crossover Mustang is sacrilegious to worshippers of the

original 1965 model. The American family who wants size of anSUV and the environmental friendliness of an electric car, the newMustang Mach E is right on target.

Yes, Ford is reshaping the Mustang’s legacy with the Mach E.This electric-powered crossover would be exciting by any name, but Ford chose to pair the future of the brand with the history of itsmost successful sedan. The Mach E is not without characteristicsthat fit well with its namesake.

The torque coming out of the dual electric motors makes theMach feel more like a racehorse than a Clydesdale. That’s especiallytrue in the GT version of the Mach E. The motors max out at 635lb-ft off the starting line. This is neck-snapping thrust. More thanthe 5.0 liter V-8 Ford has in its F150.

The result of this low-end torque is a 0-60 mph time that putsthe Mach E in good company. At 3.5 seconds to hit the mark, theMach E GT competes nicely with its rival the Tesla Model Y. This isPorsche boxter territory in an SUV that weighs nearly 5,000pounds.

The GT Performance model has 480 horsepower. Not bad for acar with no engine under the hood. Again, the output is better thanits little brother the Mustang GT sedan that we’ve all grownexpect big horsepower from. The Mach E is no joke.

Of course with an all-electric car, drivers need enough range toget to the next charging station in a cross-country road trip. Atleast, they need to make the commute to work and back on onecharge. The Mach E gives quite enough range in its 98.8 kWhextended-range battery. The EPA estimates the extended rangegives up to 300 miles of driving. This is the brass ring for electricvehicles and Ford has put itself squarely with the front runnerswith this bombshell of a battery. Another gold star for thecompany is how quickly the Mach E can recharge. With a Fordcharging station, the Mach E replenishes its full battery at 32 milesper hour, less than 10 hours.

Inside, its simple dashboard and interface are dominated by angorgeous digital gauge cluster. The vertically-mounted

touchscreen is the centerpiece. A f loating, f lip-up armrest on thecenter console creates the option for space or storing small itemsbetween the front-seat passengers. The Mache E has surprisingfeatures like the ability to change the color of the ambient interiorlighting, a heated steering wheel, wireless charging, and a hugepanoramic sunroof. This isn’t your grandfather’s Mustang. Thefront trunk is made of a durable plastic that can be rinsed and thendrained, which Ford used in a promotion to store what looked tobe 20 pounds of peeled shrimp. The Mach-E has 29 cubic feet ofcargo space behind the rear seats, and up to 60 with the back seatsfolded.

The exterior is where fans of the original Mustang havecontemplated riots at Ford headquarters. The historic emblemwith the Mustang pony runs prominently across the grill. With noneed for the air intake a gas-powered engine requires, the display isbold. The hood features two long body lines running from nose towindshield, providing a look of sleekness uncanny for such a largevehicle. Of course an SUV isn’t going to turn heads like the ShelbyGT or fastbacks of yesteryear. However, the Mach E won’t belaughed out of the parking lot. There is plenty of style to make thisfit quite naturally in the family of noble body styles.

With a price tag around $60,000 fully loaded, the Mach E GTPerformance model would make a fine addition to any family’slineup of commuter vehicles. The range, fast charging and thesport-car performance make this a pony you’d be proud to have inyour stable.

Despite their playful-sounding name, jumpsuits occupy oneof the highest rankings in the hierarchy of sophisticatedwomen’s couture. They are no longer just for working in

munitions factories like they were during World War II. Originally created in 1919 for parachuters to jump from planes

in, jumpsuits moved into fashion design circles by the 1940s and‘50s. The jumpsuit made its first appearance in “Vogue” in 1964with a design by Guy Laroche. In 1980, designer GeoffreyBeene declared it “the ballgown of the next century”.

After falling out of favor for a couple of decades, jumpsuitsstarted appearing on runways again in the early 2000s and are stillgoing strong. They’re the perfect mix of boyish and feminine, presenting an unexpected silhouette that’s both chic and effortless. The look is easy to wear, versatile and sassy, having now become awardrobe staple. Here’s a look at a few of our favorites for any socialor work situation.
