4 march 2016

As many of you know on February 4th, 2016 we had intruders in our community. Rather than rehash the whole event, I would direct you to our website (www.sprucecreekgcc.com) where the presentation on what transpired is given at a Community Watch meeting by the Sheriff’s Department. I would, however like to let you know some additional information that has come forward.

First, the three young men lived in a neighborhood close to our Community. Second, they entered the Community by breaching the fence. Additionally, Leland Management had an employee survey our perimeter for broken walls or fencing. Some limited damage was found and has been repaired.

Are we an unsafe Community? Definitely not!! As a matter of fact the Sheriff has said based upon our efforts at security we are among the safest Communities our area. He based this assessment on our systems that are in place. Our perimeter fencing and walls, our gate and traffic systems and our photographing of all license plates entering the Community, our 24 hour Security Patrols, and our very vital Community Watch program which last year logged 6,481 hours driving around our Community. He said we are as safe as we can be. Is there more crime in our Community today than in the past? According to the Sheriff’s office there is no increase in crime in our area.

Some of you may think I am writing this because I have to. I was a victim of an unusual crime in this Community about 3 years ago when mine and others barbeque grills were stolen. One night my wife said “I think someone just stole our barbeque grill.” I looked and it was gone. I asked her to call 911 and said I was going to the gatehouse. When I got to the gatehouse they told me Security had stopped a truck with a grill in the back. Fast forward it was mine, I prosecuted, and the thief went to jail. This incident did not affect my view of the Community but reminded me that I must stay vigilant. Who would think someone would steal your grill.

Should we all forget this incident? Certainly not. But we should not over react to it either. We have a wonderful and safe Community.

What can you do?

1. Lock your car in your driveway.

2. Don’t leave your key in the golf cart in your driveway or garage.

3. Don’t leave your garage door open or even part way open overnight.

4. Be aware of anything that seems out of place. If you see something call 911 first then the gatehouse.

5. If you have some free time become a Community Watch member. These people are our eyes and ears in the Community. They are trained and approved by the Sheriff’s Department. They have radio contact to the Sheriff’s Office.

6. Attend a Community Watch meeting. The Sheriff’s Department is represented at each meeting and gives an update on happenings in Marion County.

7. If you see a Security Patrol person, a Community Watch car or our Gate Attendants thank them for the job they do keeping us safe.

Last, but certainly not least, I want to thank the Marion County Sheriff’s office for their rapid and professional response to this event.

Thank you.

Gary Burd, President SCG&CC HOA

A big ‘thank you” to all that attended the January and February Entertainment Shows. You arrived early, did not cause congestion in the hallways, and facilitated the show starting right on time. Hopefully, by the time you read this article, the lobby renovations will be completed.

The next show is Friday, March 18. The group that will entertain you is Savannah Jack. If you are a fan of country music, you will love this group. Should you not be a country fan, I guarantee you will be by the end of this show. The key performers in the group originally hail from Michigan, Pennsylvania and Florida; however, they are all based in Nashville at the present time.

You might not have heard of Savannah Jack before, but they have been the opening act for such performers as Peter Frampton, John Fogerty, Vince Gill, Doobie Brothers and Kenny

What happens to your Amenities Fee you pay each month to the SCG&CC Homeowners Association?

Right now, every one of the 3,250 homes pays $123.00 per month to cover costs of maintaining our beautiful Community. In 2016, the Board of Directors, at the recommendation of the Finance Committee, is putting $17.00 of your amenities fee into our Reserve Account. It is broken down as follows: 60% ($10.20) of the $17.00 goes to Roads and Drainage, 30% ($5.10) to Common Areas and 10% ($1.70) to Recreation. So, in 2016, a total of $663,000 will be put into our reserve account to cover replacement and general maintenance of the various roads, drainage, buildings, pools, equipment, etc.

As of January 1, 2016, we have a balance of $4,622,504 in the Reserve Fund. We are estimating expenditures during 2016 of $812,440. When you add in our 2016 contribution, along with the estimated earned interest, our total as of December 31, 2016 will be approximately $4,511,064. Just so you know, as of January 1, 2016, Roads and Drainage has $3,459,411 available, Common Areas $525,317 and Recreation $637,776.

The $106.00 balance of your monthly amenities fee then goes to daytoday Operations. The total budget in 2016 for Operations is $4,134,000. There are six departments that make up the Operations budget. The following highlights the dollar amount budgeted for each department along with some specific large expense items within each department:

• General and Administrative $1,151,032 – Labor $476,924 – Trash Removal $294,756 – Management Fee $69,216 – Insurance $108,744

around town

Around TownEach March 17th, St. Patrick’s Day,

or the Feast of St. Patrick, is celebrated by Irish people and those of Irish descent. Just who was St.

Patrick? He is the foremost patron saint of Ireland but much of what we know about him is legendary. St. Patrick was born around 387 A.D. somewhere in Great Britain, possibly Scotland. As a teenager, he was kidnapped by Celtic pirates and forced to work as a shepherd in Ireland. While in captivity, the young man turned to God for comfort. After six years, he escaped and returned home. He felt called to study for the priesthood and later became a bishop. A dream or vision led him back to Ireland where he brought Christianity to the druids and pagans, and established monasteries, churches and schools. He died on March 17, 461, in Downpatrick, Northern Ireland.Originally a religious feast day commemorating the life and work of St. Patrick, the holiday has become a largely secular celebration, especially in the U.S., of all things Irish. The vibrant green shamrock, or “young clover”, is a symbol of Christianity and of Ireland. Look for these lovely plants at local stores in March. On Saturday evening, March 12, the Irish American Emerald Club here at Spruce Creek GCC is hosting its annual St. Patrick’s Dinner/Dance. The catered event takes place in the Horizon Center Ballroom and is open to all residents. Enjoy traditional Irish favorites …..corned beef & cabbage, shepherd’s pie, and Irish soda bread proudly baked by club members. Nonalcoholic beverages are included. You are welcome to BYO ‘hard stuff’!Spruce Creek resident Joe Koos will provide themed musical entertainment during dinner and later on for dancing. Irish step dancers from Hogan’s

Irish School of Dance in Gainesville take the stage at 7:30 p.m. Expect lots of green and festive decorations. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and dinner is served beginning at 6:00. Tickets may still be available. If you enjoy learning about Irish culture, heritage and history, and camaraderie among friendly, likeminded folks, please consider joining the Irish American Emerald Club. Members share their heritage thru themed activities including ancestral Irish county discussions, sharing about visits to Ireland, and Irish trivia. Monthly meetings run from October thru April. Membership is open to all residents. For dinner/dance ticket information, call Jim Molloy at 3523476541. ANGEL VOLUNTEERS… A VALUABLE RESOURCE FOR FELLOW RESIDENTS

Do these scenarios sound familiar?

1. “Can you help me? I don’t drive and I need a ride to my doctor’s appointment!”

2. “I’ve been caring for my husband (or wife) and I’d appreciate a couple of hours to go to the grocery store. Is there anyone who can stay with him (or her)?”

3. “Do you know anyone who can provide meals for me while I’m recuperating?”

4. “We need information on local assisted living facilities … can you give us some suggestions?”

5. “Is there any place that provides temporary respite care for a few days or even a week or more?”

These are questions that Angel Coordinators Karen and JoAnne deal with constantly.

Thankfully, with the support of over 100 caring volunteers, they can help provide assistance and answers to most concerns.

So, if you need a volunteer to drive you to a doctor’s appointment, or, if you need someone to stay with your incapacitated family member for a short time, we can schedule a volunteer. Please note, volunteers do not provide medical or personal care services and do NO LIFTING.

For all other questions on various caregiver resources, call KAREN, 4545933 or JOANNE, 2458692.

You can find dates, times and location on Spruce Creek on line. Look for the results of the Pie Baking Contest on March 10th. All results of the events are posted in the lobby at the Horizon Center.

Del Webb Community Wide Garage Sale

Saturday, March 19, 2016

After months of anticipation, the month of March has rolled around and the Community Wide Garage Sale is upon us.

Registration is required for residents wishing to hold a garage sale. Sellers can register at the Horizon Center from 8:00 am to 12 Noon on March 7th, 9th, and 11th. A fee of $2.00 will be required to register to help offset costs.

Residents are welcome to combine their sale with other residents if they wish. Charter Clubs are welcome to host a sale to raise funds for operating revenue or for charitable purposes.

Unlike ticket sales for events at the Horizon Center, we will register everyone who shows up. We will not run out of space so there is no need to show up extra early to be first in line.

Each registrant will be provided with balloons to attach to their light post to indicate they are hosting a sale. The location of each sale will be indicated by push pin on a large map of the community which will be in the lobby of the Horizon Center.

Sellers:

• On the morning of the sale attach balloons to the light post in your front yard.

• Items for sale can be placed on your driveway or front yard or left in the garage.

• The hours of the sale are from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. If you wish to close your sale early simply remove the balloons and close your garage door.

• All unsold items must be removed from your driveway/yard by 6:00 pm on the date of the sale.

• Unsold items and/or trash from the sale cannot be placed on the curb for trash pickup until the normal trash pickup day.

• Sell a lot of junk, have fun and enjoy the day.

Buyers:• The locations of all the sales will be indicated by push pin on

the large map that will be maintained in the lobby of the Horizon Center. Check the map often to see where you may want to shop. (You can acquire your own personal map of Del Webb from the Receptionist for $1.00. It will not have sale locations on it.)

• Do not approach any house until 8:00 am even if balloons are already attached to the light post.

• An open garage is not an invitation to enter. • Buy a lot of treasure, have fun and enjoy the day.

To many people, March is one of their favorite months. After a long winter, March signals a new fresh start; blooming flowers, greener grass and warmer days. It also seems to have an effect on people, you begin to see more smiles and a little more bounce in everyone’s step. As we head deeper into this year, our club will explore more ways to grow and enjoy what life has to offer.

With several exciting outings in the formulation stage, we can look forward to another great year of enjoyment and fellowship with one another. One of the many advantages in living in a community like this, we have so many options to do some of the things we always wanted to do, but in the past, full time employment limited the time to do them. Now is not the time to put off doing what you might like to do, go ahead, indulge yourself, its springtime.

Save the date, Saturday, May 14th, we will be hosting our first annual cookout at the Pavilion. This is one event you don’t want to miss.

Our monthly meeting, for March, will be on the third Saturday, March 19th at 6:00 pm in the Card room. Come as a visitor, leave as a friend.

All Faith Bible Study and Charity

ClubIt’s almost time to reset clocks and greet the onset of Spring, but our calendar filled winter offered two more notable events to enjoy.

Coinciding with Valentine’s Day week, we held a ‘Love Gifts for Babies’ shower. Our appreciative and in formative guest speaker, was Valarie Reed, Development Director for Women’s Pregnancy Center of Ocala; who imparted information on how the Center operates, assistance they provide and how others may help this very worthy and vital service.

In conjunction with our February Queen Esther Tea, another great woman of the Bible was honored. The Anna JOY group members beautifully highlighted the prophetess Anna, a holy and wise woman with divine insight who devoted her life to prayer, fasting and worship. Our appreciation for their artistic

and instructive presentation.

Newcomers, you are always welcome to join us. Ladies meet each Tuesday at 2:30 in the Game room currently studying the Life of Christ, (except as noted below). Gentlemen meet on Thursdays at 3:00 in the Meeting Room with study focusing on the book of Romans.

CERT(IT’S ALL ABOUT BEING PREPARED)

Hello everyone. Our northern friends have been back for awhile and enjoying not having to shovel snow. But, we can have our share of weather challenges as well. Spring tornadoes can be severe, are often associated with a squall line ahead of cold fronts and can strike in the middle of the night. If you don’t have a weather alert radio, consider getting one.

We are also closing in on the summer hurricane season. We generally get sufficient notice of them arriving, but there are preparations we can make beforehand. Consider how you’re going to handle loss of electricity (no refrigerator, can’t use gas pumps or ATM machines), water for drink and cooking, or even evacuation. Those of you who return to the Northeast are not immune to hurricanes, so these preparations apply to your summer homes.

CERT has two exercises and two training sessions during the year, which include first aid training and equipment usage. If you have a desire to participate, we can assist you in getting formal training and help you get your HAM radio license. You can contact me at 7277715600, or Don Dake at 3522457397.

Diamond Dixie Cloggers

You just might ask yourself, “Who are the Diamond Dixie Cloggers and what do they do?” For in part clogging or clog dancing is a lively dance with roots in Irish jig, English country dances, Scottish dances along with African steps and rhythms. It is a percussive dance which means the dancers beat out rhythms with their feet using both toe and heel movements. Clogging is a great form of exercise, with working up your heart rate along with having fun and meeting new friends.

A beginning clogging class was started in early February and will continue until early March, hopefully many will continue in the

group. If you want more information about the Cloggers, please contact President Eileen Goodman.

The Diamond Dixie Cloggers will be the entertainment for the closing of the Senior Games on Friday, March 11th at 12 noon in the Ballroom. Come on out and see us!

Karaoke Club

Are you tired of sitting home on Friday nights and listening to Presidential candidates explaining to us how they intend to make things great for us? Do you think it is getting somewhat nonentertaining? Maybe even a little monotonous? If you are looking for some Friday night entertainment and fun, why not spend an evening with the Karaoke Club? Every Friday evening the fun begins at 6:30 pm. We average 55 – 60 people who attend Friday Night Karaoke and normally enjoy an average of 25 – 28 singers. We turn down the lights, add special lighting effects and transform the Card room into a Karaoke Night Club. Our singers sing songs that include Pop, Country, Rock N’ Roll and even Show Music. Come and party with us on Friday nights.

Our Karaoke membership is growing fast. We presently have 170 Karaoke members who have joined our Karaoke family. Karaoke Club membership costs $3.00 per person and offers many perks. You are welcome to bring snacks and drinks (B.Y.O.B.) and dance to your favorites.

Hope to see there.

March 14, 2016 – Bill Rowland – The Power of Energy Medicine

Bill Rowland is the Founder & CEO of ENERGY MEDICAL, located in the Spruce Creek Medical Center. He states, “Our whole body runs on electricity. Every cell holds a charge just like a battery. Whenever there’s pain, injury, or disease there’s a change in the electrical properties of the tissue.” Therefore, he will be discussing how we can be treated electrically (energetically) to look better, feel better, and perform better and how we can accelerate our natural ability to heal.

Join us for this fascinating presentation!

March 28, 2016 – Gratitude Projects

Hailey Bartholomew, of 365 Grateful, found that counting her blessings was life changing! In January 2016, club members were invited to begin their own (original, selfdesigned) Gratefulness Project. March 28th, we’ll be watching a brief video about Hailey’s efforts, creating a handson project, and discussing gratitude and its benefits for health and wellness. Whether you’ve started a Gratitude Project or not, join us for this fun and inspiring meeting.

Photography ClubIt’s Birding Season! What a wonderful time of year to witness Florida’s tropical birds in their winter plumage and mating colors. I love to see the bright green shine along the beak of a Great White Egret, or the glowing orange and yellow crown of the cattle egret, and don’t forget the little blue eggs laid by the tricolored heron. Join the photography club on Saturday, March 12 to see these birds up close and personal at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm.

Why the Alligator Farm, you ask. Well did you know that these birds love to nest above alligator swamps for protection? Yes this is true. The gators help the birds by keeping away unwanted predators such as an egg snatching raccoon or a slithering snake. For more information on this trip, please contact Bob Radtke at 3522335189.

Our regularly scheduled meeting will resume on March 14th at 7:00 pm in the Meeting Room.

March Theme: Sport Shot. “Photograph a sporting event & catch the action.” I’m sure everyone has plenty of these as the Spruce Creek Senior Games are finishing up. Members send 3 to 5 photos to [email protected] for this month’s slide show.

Pickleball ClubMany Wizards, Munchkins, Flying Monkeys, Dorothy’s and Witches showed up at the “There’s No Place like Home” dinner/dance. DJ Joe Carter kept the Ruby slippers moving on the dance floor. Thank you Bob Gilbert (and Linda) for their artistic touches to make the dance special.

Did you know we have 9 active PB members over 80 years old? Please say Happy Birthday to Herman Krone 87 years old this year that started his athletics playing football, track and tennis.

In 2004 (when he moved to Del Webb) he learned PB on the tennis courts and still plays four days a week, golf’s one day and plays tennis another day. This leaves Sunday for rest but he is seen at the courts that day also. Way to go Herman – we all need to stay active like you! The Leland Management group sponsored a tournament at Kings Ridge in Clermont, Fl. All Del Webb attendees won gold medals. Congrats to Mike Benrud & Jim Claycomb; Roger Fromme and Joe McMahon; and Linda Torgeson & Candy Lamb.

Casino Night is April 23rd; mark your calendars for fun evening of gambling, raffles, food & beverages and entertainment.

been watching the first major tennis tournament of the year, the Australian Open, on TV. Although not aspiring to that level of play, they hope to pick up some tips to improve their play in the friendly competition of our tennis leagues. These leagues are played each morning, Monday through Saturday, and are structured by level of play. Any resident interested in participating, even if they have not played tennis for some time, should contact a member of the tennis club committee, to help them get involved at the appropriate skill level. Check the bulletin board at the tennis courts for committee member contact information.

Our annual Dinner/Dance was held in the Ballroom on Saturday, February 6. Catering was by Riccardo’s, and music provided by Ron the Music Man. Thanks to Chuck Compton and the other members of the Entertainment Committee for planning and organizing this very successful and enjoyable event.

Travel ClubIf you are a snow bird you know the best place to take a cruise is from Florida. It is so convenient and less expensive. So, before you leave for your summer home, give some thought to how you will spend Thanksgiving and Christmas this year. Do you really want to cook, clean and shop?? Don’t you deserve a real holiday?? Well the Travel Club has a great cruise going on the Princess Regal for Thanksgiving. 150 members went on a Thanksgiving cruise in 2015. If you choose to have Thanksgiving with your family then you should consider going on a cruise for Christmas & New Years. Yes, there is a cruise going out that will cover both holidays and it is on the Celebrity Eclipse. If you must spend the holidays with family then consider the brand new Harmony leaving on 12/3 to 12/10. This is a new Royal Caribbean ship and is very similar to the Oasis and Allure. So many choices.

All you need to do is book now and start saving for a real great vacation that leaves from Del Webb.

See you at the April meeting.

Elizabeth Van Lew, a Civil War spy for the

Union, is rated by experts as being one of the best female spies in history. Dr. Donald Paul Wyman’s book The Chosen Path tells the story of the successes of the Richmond, Virginia socialite as well as the misfortunes and cruelties she endured for her loyalty to the Union.

Dr. Wyman will talk about his research in gathering the story of Miss Van Lew’s life so that the readers of his book will understand the true character and motivation of this American Patriot. General Ulysses Grant is quoted as saying: “Elizabeth Van Lew provided the most valuable information I received from Richmond.”

Please join us to hear Dr. Wyman describe his enthusiasm and incentive to tell the readers the story of this female activist. Originally from Massachusetts, Dr. Wyman now is a resident of The Villages and a retiree after 22 years with the Central Intelligence Agency.

Until we get a woodshop built, we are meeting in the Game Room at the Horizon Center on the 4th Friday of the month at 2:00pm. We try to have a short program followed by discussion. Our big audacious goal this year is to actually present our plans for a new woodshop to the HOA and get approval to start construction. If you are interested and would like to help in this process, please join our club. It’s all about numbers. The more members we have, the more power we have to influence the decisionmaking process.

interest groups

PLEASE….SLOW DOWN

Because of the many complaints we receive, we need to once again remind residents to SLOW DOWN when driving through the community. As we all know, the speed limit is 25 miles per hour; however, we often see vehicles traveling in excess of the speed limit! We can claim that the speeders are visitors or outside contractors, but, that’s not always true. The majority of speeders are in fact, …residents! Why are we in such a hurry that we are willing to put everyone at risk by speeding through our community? We must remember, we share the roads with golf carts, bicycles, residents walking their pets or out for some exercise. It doesn’t take much to cause an injury…a speeding vehicle makes matters worse. Nighttime is especially dangerous. Because some areas are darker than others may make it difficult to see someone walking. We ask that walkers and bikers wear reflective clothing during the evening; however, they don’t always comply.

Another concern is vehicles not stopping at STOP SIGNS! Coming to a complete stop at a STOP sign is required by law. We have witnessed drivers breaking the law by not stopping; especially golf carts! Golf carts need to obey the rules of the road like all other vehicles. Golf cart drivers who don’t stop at STOP signs are putting themselves and others at risk of an accident that may result in an injury or worse. Please remember that accidents just don’t happen. Accidents are caused by either an unsafe condition, an unsafe act or a

combination of both. Take a moment to think about that. Let’s all slow down and be sure to stop at STOP signs!

We have a contract with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office allowing deputies to come into our community to address speeders and all other infractions, including the seat belt law. Obey all laws to avoid a citation. A traffic ticket will result in a significant fine. Save your money!

COMMUNITY WATCH ELECTIONS

Our elections were held in December. Board member Ron Liersch has decided to retire after serving several years of dedicated service. We give special thanks to Ron for all he has done and for maintaining both vehicles while serving on our board. Bob Jacques will be filling Ron’s position. Our officers are: Joe Favata, President; Richard Delaney, Vice President; Mary Delaney, Treasurer; Linda Ruggiero, Secretary. Members of the board include: Tony Cristina, Bob Jacques, Tony Kelichner, John Penko and Wayne Ruggiero.

A special “THANK YOU” goes out to our board and to all Community Watch volunteers for their commitment and dedication in making our program what it is today…”the best!

UUU

Our next meeting is on Friday, March 4th at 9:00 am in the Ballroom … Residents are always welcome to attend. To become a volunteer, contact: Joe Favata at 307-6925.
