“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding “ Proverbs 3:5 1 |

Food for thought

By Danny

In these trying times we

can often be overwhelmed

by the circumstances of

our lives or the events

that are happening

around us. I believe the

Bible holds the truth that

can liberate us from

anxiety, confusion and

fear that we carry and

gives us hope, purpose

and joy.

Proverbs gives clear

instructions for us to live

successfully in every area

of our lives. Chapter 3: 5-

6, says "With all your

heart, you must trust the

Lord and not your own

judgment. Always let

Him lead you, and He will

clear the road for you to

follow." Trust or

faith requires that we turn

all our problems - all

our situations, all our

fears, all our anxieties -

into the hand of the Lord.

We must acknowledge

that God possess the

power to help us out of

our crisis.

David C. Casland said “In

stressful, confusing

situations, we might ask a

worried, what now? But if

we look to the Lord and

trust in his care our fear

will be replaced with

peace”.

We must always

remember that God is

faithful; we can depend

on him; He will never let

us down.

Recession and You

Broadcasters, journalists,

teachers, students, employers,

in fact people from all walks

of life are using the word

recession on a daily basis.

Examples of current headlines

that paint a picture of this

fearful environment are ‘Asia

Stocks Drop As Global

Recession Fears Fly’, ‘Bank

of England Pressed To Cut

Interest Rates by Full Point’,

‘Slump Will Hit Britain

Hardest’, ‘BT Axes 10,000

Jobs As Crisis Deepens’.

FEAR in the economy (the

result of millions of people's

actions) is the general impact

on the society.

Despite this the child of God

is promised untold blessings

and miracles when they plant

seed to help preach the gospel

of salvation. Malachi 3:10-12

provides one of the conditions

for blessings in recessionary

times, “Bring ye all the tithes

into the storehouse, that there

may be meat in mine house,

and prove me now herewith,

saith the Lord of hosts, if I will

not open you the windows of

heaven, and pour you out a

blessing that there shall not be

room enough to receive it.

And I will rebuke the devourer

for your sakes, and he shall

not destroy the fruits of your

ground; neither shall your

vine cast her fruit before the

time in the field, saith the Lord

of hosts. And all nations shall

call you blessed: for ye shall

be a delightsome land, saith

the Lord of hosts.”

Christians are encouraged to

operate on the principle that

God has not given us a spirit

of fear; but of power, and of

love, and a sound mind (2

Timothy 1:7). With that

reassurance let us examine the

natural perspective on the

word recession.

McConnell and Brue (1993)

define recession as “a period

of decline in total output,

income, employment and

trade, lasting six months or

longer. This downturn is

marked by widespread

contractions of business in

many sectors of the

economy….the price level is

likely to fall only if the

recession is severe and

prolonged – that is if a

depression occurs. An old one

liner is

when your

neighbour

loses his job

it’s a

recession;

when you

lose your

job it’s a

depression.”

The diagram

in the next

column

illustrates

the downward spiral or

recession:

Some of the ways in which a

recession can start are via

over-production -- a situation

in which the supply exceeds

the nation's ability to

consume. Also, terrorist acts

such as September 11th

tragedy contributed to a

recession as people become

fearful of flying. Wars such

as World War II and that in

Iraq also contribute to a

recession.

In the current recession, a lot

of people who have been laid

off are spending as little as

possible, and many people

who fear they may be laid off

are also saving their money

Source: Harris, Tom (2002) ‘How Recessions Work’

(Harris 2008). However, the

government and the monetary

system (banks etc.) want you

to spend money so that the

economy can go into the

recovery phase and eventually

return to growth conditions.

The opposite of a recession is

the upward spiral as illustrated

in the following diagram:

Source: Harris, Tom (2002), ‘How

Recessions Work’

Harris (2008) suggests that the

key word to a growth is the

confidence level of the

millions of consumers and

producers in the future of the

economy which leads to

increased investments and

spending. The idea is that you

buy stock in a company and

hold it to resell at a later date

when it has increased in value.

There are six key groups

within the population that the

government and the monetary

systems have to consider in

making policies or strategies

to control the economic

environment:

1) Students/youth - future

leaders (receive

income from

parents/carers, grant

funding and part-time

work)

2) employed (receive

income from

salary/wages)

3) pensioners/retired

workers (receive

income from pension

fund)

4) unemployed (receive

income via benefits

scheme)

5) global private

sector/employers

(business owners

receive income from

in-store and online

sales and investments

6) shoplifters and

prisoners (receive

income from

stealing/crime)

The banking system facilitates

the transfer of money from

one group to the next.

The actions of all groups have

an impact on the current

economic environment.

i) Students are investing now

for their future economic

well-being and are scared

of their decisions in these

recessionary times. A

recent survey carried out

by the market research

firm Opinion Panel

Research indicates that

one in 12 final-year

university students regrets

their degree choice now

that recession looks likely

(1,041 first year to final

year students were

interviewed).

The following

responses were extracted

from the survey report:

One student who

took part said: "It's going

to change everything. I

was planning on taking

my time to get a job but

my savings won't go as

far now and I'll have to

take whatever job is

available, even if it's

something like

waitressing."

Another said:

"Maybe a module I didn't

perform particularly well

in could become an issue

when it really shouldn't

be. Employers will be

more ruthless when

looking for new

employees."

Fears about the downturn

are not confined to

students studying finance.

One physiotherapy

student said: "People with

injuries will decide to not

pay to see a

physiotherapist and just

ignore the injury due to

saving money therefore

slowing down business."

On 10th November 2008

in a distinguished lecture

hosted by Middlesex

University Business

School – Hendon campus,

Mr Tom Schmitt the

President and CEO of

Fedex Global Supply

Chain Services stated that

Fedex hires staff for

attitude first and then

skills. The perspective of

this global leader is that

where there is low will &

low skill everyone loses

but if you have high will

and low skills you can be

trained to become an

employee with high will

& high skills. This forms

part of their put people

first policy.

In an interview with Mr

Peter Jones, Assistant

Vice Principal who is the

UCAS Care Guidance &

Support leader at

Paddington Academy on

Tuesday 11th November

2008 he stated that “most

jobs that we educate kids

for don’t exist as yet. The

education has to provide

transferable skills that

they can adapt since the

average person will have

8 – 10 different career

jobs in their lifetime.” He

recommends that students

visit link

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=QeoKQbT8BKs to view the video on You

Tube entitled ‘Shift

Happens’. He also

cautions students not to

look for what career they

want to do but the subject

that they are interested in

as most careers you can

train for postgraduate. It

is better that you do

something you enjoy and

get a broad education.

Also, Mrs Oli Tomlinson,

the Vice Principal -

Teaching & Learning at

Paddington Academy

(hosts Years 7–13),

reassures its students that

the developmental

program should be

beneficial to them in the

future because “we have a

social enterprise

programme in years 7 and

10 that equips our

students with the skills

and attributes to be life

long learners. We provide

students with

opportunities to impact

their school and local

community in a positive

way. This is further

developed in the sixth

form so that at university

they can be confident

positive role models

within the new

community and well

prepared for working life

with a set of generic

attributes and skills.

I have benefited from

choosing to do a Masters

of Business

Administration (MBA)

which is a universal

postgraduate degree. My

major was accounting for

my undergraduate degree

but I also had a broad

education and can transfer

skills in almost any

working environment.

There is hope because

God has the blue print for

our lives. His plan cannot

be defeated or destroyed.

Legal perspective

on current Issues

First-time buyers beware

First time buyers quietly

counting their blessings as

house prices continue to fall

need to be on their guard when

they do decide to step onto the

property ladder. Brokers are

becoming more desperate, in

the falling markets and are

giving into the temptation of

fraud.

There are many instances

where mortgage brokers have

exaggerated borrower’s

incomes, overtime estimates

and invented second jobs so

that the borrower can get a

bigger mortgage for a bigger

property which means that the

broker receives a larger

commission. The problem

with that for borrowers is as

everything becomes more

expensive it is inevitable that

their finances will be stretched

too thin causing repayment to

become unmanageable and

repossession the ultimate

outcome.

So, to prevent being defrauded

by unscrupulous lenders,

borrowers should ensure that

they do not sign any mortgage

applications or any other

documents until it is fully

completed and they have read

and satisfied themselves that

they are happy with all the

contents.

Mortgage Repossessions

It is no surprise to anyone that

mortgage repossession orders

are at a high, indicating that

more and more homeowners

are under tremendous

financial strain. As a result of

this the Civil Justice Council

has issued a new pre-action

protocol for mortgage

repossession cases. The

protocol sets out clear

guidance on the steps that

lenders (e.g. Banks) are

expected to take before

commencing a claim in the

courts. The key provisions of

the protocol are as follows:

The lender and

borrower must act

fairly and reasonably

and all

communications must

be clear, fair and not

misleading.

The parties must

discuss the reason for

the arrears, the

borrower’s financial

circumstances and the

borrower’s proposals

for repayment. If those

proposals are to be

rejected then the lender

must give reasons why

they are being rejected.

The lender must

consider postponing

commencing

repossession

proceedings, in which

case the borrower must

take all reasonable

steps to actively

market the property.

The court takes the view that

starting a possession claim

should be a last resort and

should not normally be started

when settlement is still

actively being explored.

Here it goes…

At the turn of the 21st century, a

few men from NLA Dalston were

planning an outreach arm for the

church using the medium of

sports; basketball to be more

specific. Bleak though it looked

in its initial stages, we pressed

on and have been running nearly

a decade. The team

has developed over the past

years, and has been dubbed the

NLA Saints, identifying ourselves

as a part of the New Life

Assembly church organisation.

The team have been

practicing every Saturday at the

Queensbridge Community &

Sports Centre, Holly Street,

Dalston since 2000.

Since that time, we have trained

and developed quite a few

players (both male & female)

some of whom have gone on to

play for their schools or even

colleges and perhaps

universities. Having said that, we

as a team struggled to make any

inroads into any recognised

basketball league, due to various

circumstances, not least finance,

until now...

On the 26th October 2008, the

NLA Saints were able to

participate in the London

Metropolitan Basketball League

(Division 3) and subsequently

played our first official basketball

match on the 9th November 2008

against Middlesex University.

We are very pleased to

announce at this juncture, that

we won that match by a narrow

margin of 74 to 72. A win

nonetheless.

We have future games

scheduled up until March 2009.

See the fixture below.

Anyone who wishes to support

us at any of these matches can

contact either of the names listed

below. Financial support is also

welcome in any amount.

Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord …

“Jobless rate at a decade

high”, “Housing shortages”,

“Credit crisis hits 2012”,

“Businesses go bust!”,

“Inflated food and fuel prices”,

“Rising Homelessness”

“Worldwide Panic”,

“Starvation on the Rise!”

With these headlines and more

blasting the airwaves and

occupying the front pages of

our daily newspapers, even

cosmopolitan magazines have

included sections that forecast

advice to help us safeguard

against this impending disaster.

The world’s largest, most

influential database is

bombarded with a plethora of

predictions for the current

socio-economic situation-The

Global Financial Credit

Crunch. Additionally, the

recent election of America’s

first black president has found

many in a state of euphoria as

they see this bold move as the

necessary solution to a heal a

nation in crisis and save a

world from doom.

What amazes me most is that

even in this situation humanity

still fails to acknowledge the

reality of God in His infinite

existence and sovereignty. It is

in these times we as God’s

children are both challenged

and encouraged as we see

prophesies fulfilled and we

know that the coming of our

saviour is not far off.

Sadly enough, without

exception to the general trend

many of God’s children are

being tossed with the wind. But

the word of God holds firm and

serves as an encouragement,

that in this dispensation we

should fear not, and stand still

for we shall surely see the

salvation of the Lord.

It is natural for us to become

anxious and even fearful but we

must not become immobilised

by fear for it is the absence of

faith and it repels what faith

embraces.

Prosperity in times of famine is

not a new concept to God for

scripture shows us that the very

forefathers of our faith;

Abraham, Isaac and Jacob,

ALL were blessed in times of

famine. Isaiah declares “

Behold I will do a new things

and it shall spring forth: shall

ye not know it? I will even

make a way in the wilderness

and rivers in the desert.” Job

5:20 also supports that in

famine God shall redeem thee

from death and in war from the

power of the sword.

Yahweh is still the God who

opens and shuts doors and the

dominion that He has given us

to replenish, multiply, reign and

rule and to subdue in the earth

has not been revoked.

Therefore we still have the

power to command the spirit of

lack to flee and decree and

declare the will and favour of

God to be manifested in our

lives, in the name of Jesus!

We are covenant people and so

great and wondrous are the

promises of God for us.

Our empowerment lies in

knowledge that God watches

over His word to perform it

(Jeremiah 1:12b). He is not

man that He should lie, nor the

son of man, that He should

change his mind. Does He

speak and not act? Does He

promise and not fulfil?

(Numbers 23:19). In this era:

This book of the law must not

depart out of our mouths, but

we must meditate therein day

and night and observe to do all

that is written therein: For then

shall we make our way

prosperous and we SHALL

have good success!

This will allow us pursue after

the righteousness of God which

puts us in line to prosper and

we shall be like trees planted by

the rivers of water that bringeth

forth fruit in due season and

our leaves also shall not wither

…(Psalm 1:3).

Finally, our victory lies in

power of God’s word, after all

the weapons of our warfare

are not carnal (therefore the

worldly solutions don’t apply

to us) but are MIGHTY

through God to the pulling

down of strong holds, casting

down imaginations and every

high thing that exalts itself

against the knowledge God

and bringing into captivity

every thought to the

obedience of Christ.

Thus we are able to relinquish

the spirit of fear and Stand

still to see the salvation of our

Lord …

Power verses

not afraid, neither be thou

dismayed: for the Lord thy God is

fullness thereof, the world, and

they that dwell therein. (Psalms

Recession and you

ii) the employed are saving

and returning to the

system by paying taxes

on earnings and assets

acquired (mortgages

etc.); some find it more

beneficial to rent at this

time. Their spending can

be spread over a larger

number of goods and

services.

Since the bankruptcy of

Lehman Brothers bank

commuters are

bombarded by the Metro

newspapers that

highlight job cuts.

Employees no longer

focus on if they will get

a bonus as the best bonus

is to have any job at all.

The unfortunate side of

job losses is that some

people have lost their

homes to repossession

and this is likely to

continue. Until the final

payment is made on a

mortgage the home

belongs to the

bank/financing company.

Hence the theory has

been put into practice.

People are spending less

and trying to save more

out of fears they will lose

their job. If people

continue to save the

extra funds no change

will happen. Hence, the

world central banks and

the government need to

intervene to regulate the

economy. The G20

Finance Ministers met

this month to discuss

strategies and consider

increasing aid to poorest

countries.

iii) pensioners are using

their savings from their

working periods.

Unfortunately, the rate of

inflation has

considerably reduced the

value of their portfolio.

They are constantly

appealing to the

government for relief in

the utility rates as oil

prices surge to

astronomical heights.

iv) the unemployed are

being cared for by the

general tax pool of

employers and the

employed.

v) Businesses are closing

down by the day. It is

difficult to collect from

customers who owe and

sales are minimal or non-

existent due to loss of jobs,

low income earners etc.

The Federal Reserve System,

the central bank of the United

States was founded in Congress

in 1913 to provide the nation

with a safer, more flexible, and

more stable monetary and

financial system; its role in

banking and the economy has

expanded over the years. The

duties include:

- Conducting the nation’s

monetary policy by

influencing the money

and credit conditions in

the economy in pursuit

of full employment and

stable prices.

- Supervising and

regulating banking

institutions to ensure the

safety and soundness of

the nation’s banking

and financial system

and to protect the credit

right of consumers

- Maintaining the stability

of the financial system

and containing systemic

risk that may arise in

financial markets.

- Providing certain

financial services to the

U.S. government, to the

public, to financial

institutions, and to

foreign official

institutions, including

playing a major role in

operating the nation’s

payments system.

Most developed countries have

a central bank whose functions

are broadly similar to those of

the Federal Reserve. The Bank

of England has existed since

the end of the seventeenth

century. Napolean I established

the Banque de France in 1800,

and the bank of Canada began

operations in 1935. The

German central bank was re-

established after World War II

and is loosely modelled on the

Federal Reserve.

With the election of Barak

Obama as the first black

president of the United States,

the optimism has restored some

confidence in the global

economic markets. The G20

ministers of finance are

confident that they control or

run things but the word of God

indicates that there will be a

transfer of wealth if we look

not at the wind because Isaac

sowed seed during famine, an

unnatural thing to do and

received a hundredfold harvest

within months, i.e. in the same

year. Isaac was so blessed the

Philistines envied him for he

had possession of flocks, and

Page 11: VisionNLA News Letter Nov 2008

VisionNLA Newsletter - November Don’t look at the wind, Cooperate with God

possession of herds, and great

store of servants (Gen 26:14).

God says he knows every hair

that we have on our head and

that he cares for us. I encourage

you to cast all your cares upon

him and sow seed into the

kingdom of God.

Myles Munroe often says that

an ambassador for a kingdom

pays no bills. It is the kingdom

that has responsibility for that.

Hence if you are working for

the Lord he will take care of

you by providing a job,

business, contracts, favour,

whatever is required to ensure

that you represent him well. If

you buy a washing machine

and it does not work it is

returned to the manufacturer.

In the same way when

something is not working in our

lives we can go back (return) to

our creator as Jabez did and

pray “O that thou wouldest

bless me indeed, and enlarge

my coast, and that thine hand

might be with me, and that thou

wouldest keep me from evil,

that it may not grieve me! And

God granted him that which he

requested.” (1 Chronicles 4:10)

Let us who are called by His

name humbly call on Him in

prayer for he promises to hear

from heaven and heal our land.

Talk 2 Me Cory: Hey Thie, I haven’t seen

you for ages what’ve

you been up to?

Cynthie: Hey Cor Hey Rach!

I’ve been around,

working and stuff. You

know how it is

Rachel: I tried calling you lots

of times but didn’t get

you and you haven’t

called back.

Cynthie: Well I’ve been busy.

Sorry and to be frank

Rach, don’t take this the

wrong way but…

You’re just calling to

tell me that you haven’t

seen me in church. Lots

of people keep telling

me that. In the world

that I live in I have to

work on Sundays. I’m

not in some cushy job

where I get to pick all

my hours.

Rachel: I understand Thie but

every Sunday? Well

what about Wednesday

and Friday night.

Cynthie: You know what Rach

I can’t be asked Bye.

Cor I’ll catch you later

Cynthie walks away

Rachel: I should have just left

her.

Cory: She knows it’s because

you care.

Rachel: Last week I sat down

and thought about us,

The inseparable three.

Remember when Sis

Bernard tried to split us

up in Sunday school and

Thie complained to

Pastor that we were just

trying to encourage

each other in the Lord.

Cory: ha-ha I remember, then

she went on to talk

about Christian

persecution and that

splitting up the saints

was a tactic used to

make them weaker so

that they would later

deny Christ and their

Christian believes. Ha.

Pastor just promoted us

to the next class to shut

us up and get us out of

Sis. Bernard’s hair.

Rachel: Yeah and it was in that

new class that we

started to learn about

the foundations of

Christianity and we

decided to follow the

Lord in water baptism.

It was such a good

experience being

baptised with my two

best friends. It’s so hard

not to see her with us

whilst we’re

worshiping.

Cory: Yeah I know… Don’t

worry about it I’ll try

and talk to her.

Later that night Cory rings

Cynthie

Cory: Hey Thie are you OK

Cynthie: Yeah I’m sorry about

earlier. I know I’ve

been a bit distant lately.

To be honest I don’t

feel the same.

Something’s not right,

my life’s confused. I

feel like I’m a plant in a

garden and there’s a

hurricane and

everything else has

blown away. I’m trying

to hold on but it’s hard

Corey: It’s good that you

shared this with me

Thie. Rach and I are

here for you. We love

you and are willing to

help you not judge you.

We won’t just let you

get blown away in the

wind.
