Vision November 2017

President’s Message

It’s been another year chock-full of events here at OZCF. A scouting jamboree, Mentorship Day,

Gymkhana Night, the Annual Summer Picnic, cricket matches, the Annual Cricket Dhansak and

various other functions continue to highlight the beehive of activity within our organization.

It hasn’t just been social activities which members have been frequenting. Religious activities con-

tinue to be well attended as we celebrated Ghambars, Navroze jashans and dinners, observed the

Muktad periods and the North American Mobeds Council held their AGM in May. Religious intro-

spection continues to draw out members as the Asha Vahishta Seminar Series allow interactive and

engaging dialogue on various topics related to our faith.

Our facilities are used for eight to nine months of the year by both the Scouts Group and the Seniors

for yoga and zumba sessions. Scouts leaders inculcate good citizenship values into our youngsters

via their activities. Zumba, yoga and laughter sessions ensure that our Seniors continue to experi-

ence an active and holistic approach to their lifestyle.

What’s more on offer, you ask? The always popular Jamva Chaloji food fair will take place at the

ZRCC on Sunday December 3rd

. A perfect time to stock up on all your favourite foods just in time to

entertain over the busy Holiday Season. We’ll round off the year with New Year’s Eve also at ZRCC

on December 31st. Keep reading these pages for more info on both of these events.

Our Place of Worship project received a shot in the arm as Halton Region gave us the go-ahead to

proceed with building applications using private services enabling us to proceed with development

applications.

The Board had met with its counterparts from ZSO. It was agreed to that we would continue the

process of co-hosting various events. Cue the Tirgan function, the Iranian festival of water, held for

the very first time at our property and attended by 250 members from OZCF, ZSO and Kanoun

which coincided with Canada Day 150 celebrations.

OZCF has never been so vibrant in terms of the activities and events on offer. Yet as wonderful a

year as it has been, it has been equally difficult for many families who have lost loved ones. May

Ahura Mazda forever bless their souls as He welcomes them to His abode of resplendent light.

Our auditors Lepore & Company Chartered Accountants have informed us that they will no longer

be able to conduct audits for OZCF. Lepore has recommended another firm, DBK Accounting, who

perform numerous audits for not-for-profit organizations. The Treasurer has been in contact with

partner Jonathan Kooiman regarding our transfer.

President’s Message..Continued

Team Golf teed up this year’s fundraiser and raised over $21,000, money which we putted straight into the General Fund to help defray annual operat-ing costs. The 19

th hole (after golf) saw 160+ golfers and members who

drove a fairways to the Caledon Golf & Country Club and produced the larg-est ever turn out for a golf fundraiser to celebrate with dinner and drinks.

A huge “thank you” to Chisty and Firdosh Bulsara for quarterbacking the organization and the entire Committee for demonstrating brilliant teamwork in pulling off a fabulous event, par excellence. As we approach year-end, a reminder to please remember to fulfill your membership requirements and pay your fees and/or forward any changes to personal information on the attached membership form.

We understand that our members lead busy lives. A Pre-Authorized Debit

form was created so that you may set up a one-time annual prepayment

where your bank account or Credit Card will be debited at the beginning of

each year and you shall not have to worry about fees ever again. Set it and

forget it. See attached.

On behalf of the Board, I wish you and your families a peaceful and healthy

New Year!

OBITUARY-ERVAD NOSHIR SAVAKSA MIRZA

(OCTOBER 13, 1938 TO SEPTEMBER 13, 2017)

Ervad Noshir Mirza was born in Mumbai to Savaksa and Homai (Kerawala) and had one elder sister Behroz.

Noshir grew up in Mumbai’s Dadar Parsi Colony and completed his schooling at the Don Bosco High School. He was an active scout in the then 100

th Bombay Scout Group (now known as 11

th CBDA) in Parsi Colony, Dadar,

Mumbai (Please see below the “100th Toronto Scout Group report for the month of September”, dedicated to

Noshir). After obtaining the Secondary School Certificate, he did the Bachelor of Science from Ruia College. Dur-ing his college years, he joined the National Cadet Corp (NCC),) Infantry, and became a “Non-Commissioned Offi-cer” (NCO) or what was known as an “Under officer “in charge of the Maharashtra State 3

rd Battalion, “Alfa” Com-

pany of Ruia College. After B. Sc., he joined the prestigious Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute (VJTI), also at Matunga, Mumbai and completed a four-year course in Mechanical Engineering and an additional year of Electri-cal Engineering to obtain a combined mechanical and electrical diploma. Noshir joined National steel in Mumbai, in its early days and then moved to Wanson India in Pune which later became Thermax India. Wanson India was formed in technical licensed collaboration with Wanson Brussels to fabricate automatic packaged boilers in India. It was a completely new concept for small boilers then. Nosh travelled to Wanson Brussels under technical col-laboration to learn new technology of automatic packaged boilers. He also travelled to Indonesia, Singapore and the Far East. As always, his creativity led to improved version of Wanson boilers made in India. Wanson/Thermax decided to venture out overseas in completely new market in Canada and formed a company Canadian Boilers Ltd. in 1976 in Mississauga, Canada.

He married Putli Damania in 1967 and they immigrated to Canada in 1976 with their children, Rustom, Aimie and Khurshid and settled in Mississauga. Canadian Boilers Ltd. In Mississauga, could not find a better person than Noshir entrusting development of a steam generator and operations in Canadian Market. Another company, Ther-mogenics, located in Aurora, ON, which was a competitor of Canadian Boilers, always had an eye on Noshir. When Noshir was available for transition, they immediately offered him a contract with five-year job guarantee to make sure that no other company can match the offer. Thermogenics management and staff kept changing but Noshir was indispensable for whoever took over the management and he stayed with them. Wherever Noshir worked, he was liked and respected by top management to bottom apprentice in the organization. Even though retired recently, he was actively involved in developing a high-pressure steam generator for oil field market. He developed a model of the first steam generator which is named after him as “Nosh One” and is on display at Ther-mogenics in Aurora.

Noshir was ordained as a Navar from the Dadar Athornan Madressa and he participated in jashans during Muk-tads, Gahambars, navjotes, weddings and many other religious events. Noshir was the past secretary of the North American Mobed Council (NAMC) and attended their annual general meeting (AGM) regularly, whether it was held in Canada or USA. He performed the annual Jashan on the death anniversaries of Arbab and Meheraban Guiv for past several years. Even in inclement weather, he would commute several hours each way to perform the jashans, as long as he was not snowed in and he could open the door of his house and drive out of the long drive-way at the farm. He loved to be with Nature and in the early ‘90s, he bought a mobile home in Halliburton, ON.

In 1998, Noshir and Putli moved to a farm approximately 150 km North of Toronto in Melanthon ON. In spite of being far away from Toronto, Noshir and Putli would be one of the first to be by the bedside of a sick person in a hospital. Noshir loved his pets, (dog, cats, chicken, and geese) and he would sacrifice attending a party or a trip out of town in order to stay at home and feed them.

The community has indeed lost a precious gem and a noble and kind person. Noshir always greeted everyone with open arms, hug and a big smile. We are confident that his soul will greet Sarosh, Rashne and Meher Yazatas with wide open arms and a big smile before entering Ahura Mazda’s Abode of Endless Light-“Garodemana”.

May his soul rest in Eternal Peace Amen!!!

Scouting year begins in September and ends in August. The beginning of this Scout year has been extremely trau-matic for our Group and our entire Zoroastrian community as we have lost one more of our founding member, Scou-ter (Ervad) Noshir Mirza. Last year, our Group lost Jimmy Mistry, who was also one of the founding members and passed away in October 2016. This month’s report is dedicated in memory of Scouter Noshir Mirza. Noshir started his scouting life at a very young age in the then 100

th Bombay Scout Group, now 11

th CBDA He was a Senior Sixer

in Cubs, and a Troop Leader and Secretary of the Court of Honour Council of Patrol leaders and seconds in Scout. He was the leader’s assistant in Senior Scout (equivalent to our Ventures here) and a Rover. As a Rover, he was one of the team of four Rovers who made a trek through the Himalayas from Kathmandu to Thyangboche in Nepal. It was Noshir’s love for scouting and more importantly, his eagerness that the Zoroastrian children should experi-ence the adventures of scouting, that he helped in forming the 100

th Toronto - First Zoroastrian Scout Group in 1990.

Noshir was on the Group Committee as a secretary and later as a Chairperson. He was so keen to have young kids join our Group, that for those kids who had transportation problems, he would pick them up from Mississauga to at-tend the scout meeting at the Darbe Meher and later on take them back home. He wanted to ensure that every kid enjoyed outings, camps and jamborees. He would always encourage the Group Committee to spend money on the youths for these activities. Noshir loved to be one with Nature and bought a mobile home in Haliburton in the early 90s. Noshir and Putli invited the scouts and the Venturers to camp there and Noshir bulldozed some of the trees for the scouts to pitch their tents and built 2 temporary latrines (“KYBO”) for boys and girls. He attended almost every annual day prize distribution and picnic of our Group. When the Group celebrated the Silver Anniversary from Sept 2014-August 2015, he was requested to arrange for the inaugural opening ceremony Jashan with the past young scouts who were priests. He made handouts explaining the symbolic representation of the rituals. Scouter.

Scouter Noshir was a living personification of the “scouting spirit”. He also had a nickname of “Pathfinder” when he was in college and true to that name he was a true leader and a “pathfinder” to all of us.

With our heads bowed, we place a small stone over a large one which is a scout sign of a pathfinder to indicate that you are “on your way Home” to Ahura Mazda.

May your soul rest in peace forever, Amen!!!

Before we end our Yoga/Zumba sessions in November 2017, we would like to thank the people who have helped to make this year so successful.

Marook Sidhwa who conducts the Yoga sessions and has been doing it for the last so many years. Katlyn Fantin who teaches Yoga when Marook is unavailable. Marook also coordinates the Zumba sessions with our very popular Instructor Ariam. Both these sessions have become so successful that we have between 35 to 40 seniors attending every Wednesday. Of course, this would not be possible without the commitment and help from our Volunteer Drivers. These remarkable people are: Armine Jasoomani, Roya Ariyie, Adil Gazdar, Kamal and Cawas Driver, Xerxes Bamji, Fred Golwalla, Benifer and Hozi Patel and Noshir Clarke. Without the dedication of these wonderful people this program would not be so popular or successful.

Nowzar Borzooyan with the soothing hum of his Tibetan Lama bowl maintains our mental and physical well being with his Laughter Therapy and Meditation sessions. Shernaz Amaria, Pilsi Desai, Fred Golwalla, Ka-mal Driver and Armaity Anandasagar are ever ready to help out when ever and where the need arises.

Lastly but certainly not the least our sincere thanks go out to our President, Cyrus Gazdar, our Treasurer, Tauzer Dalal and our very understanding Liaison, Khushi Doctor. This Board has been extremely sensitive and cognizant of the seniors’ needs. They pay the Zumba Instructors fees so that our Seniors can enjoy a healthy and active life style. We truly appreciate all their input and cooperation.

Motivational writer Louise Hay has authored many self-help books. Her teachings are very famous. She

has a very unique book titled “You Can Heal Your Life”. Some parts of the book talk about dis-ease, which

means not at ease. She explains how each disease comes from a specific stress in our lives and introduces

ways to fix this naturally. In order to fully benefit from her book, I highly recommend you listen to the entire

audio book. A chapter a day, keeps the doctor away.

One Step Closer! We are pleased to report that the many studies needed for our rezoning application have now been submitted to us by our consultants. Once the reports are reviewed internally with the assistance of our planners and architects, we will send our application to the Town of Oakville, Regional Municipality of Halton and Conservation Halton. The studies address future development of our site, effects on the environment and surrounding properties, and will also help us determine the exact location of the building. Once we finalize these draft consultant reports, we expect to make a submission to the authorities by November end with the required application forms and fees. It has been a long and complex process over the past few months. Thanks to everyone's generous support and hard work, we are one step closer to seeing our vision realized. We will post the final reports on our website and keep the membership updated on progress. May Ahura Mazda bless our community. Phil Sidhwa Chair, PWAC

Asha Vahishta Seminar Series – Update

Back by popular demand, the Asha Vahishta Seminar Series reconvened on September 30

th.

One of the failures of all faith and ethnic communities is to remain self-absorbed, as part of their introspection process. It is likely that the range of options and answers become limited when one’s view is restricted to the ‘has been traditionally for us’ realm. Broadening one’s outlook with an understanding of other faith and sociocultural groups allows for a deeper connection to one’s own faith and fellowship. Herein, we begin a series of lecture and discussion type seminars to determine what lessons Zoroastrians and Zoroastrianism can learn by way of a cross-cultural examination. Having explored thematic issues of faith and fellowship over the past year, specialized and focused topics would now become the subjects of discussion and lenses of investigation, while drawing upon our previous understandings. AV session 2.1 was titled Reading Zoroastrianism from Christian Perspectives: Insights into Faith and Fellowship Development. The session dealt broadly with Christianity, and what insights into faith and fellowship development which could be discerned from ‘Reading Zoroastrianism from Christian Perspectives’.

AV session 2.2 on October 14th was titled Retro or Reboot?: Zoroastrian Operating System (ZOS) Now and for

the Future. Previous topics from the first part of the AVSS colloquia were revisited in order to visualize a

Zoroastrianism as an operating system, and if any alterations were necessary to it in order to facilitate resolutions to

current problems/issues of faith and fellowship.

Discussion also took place on whether a retro version of ZOS was equipped to accomplish this, or whether we required a reboot after 'installing all updates'.

This began a series of Anjuman engagement sessions to define a coherent Articles of Belief and Tenets of Faith.

Page 8: Vision November 2017 - Wild Apricot...After obtaining the Secondary School Certificate, he did the Bachelor of Science from Ruia College. Dur-ing his college years, he joined the National

As aforementioned, we are alternating between Education Insight and Resolution Building sessions, in this our second phase of the Asha Vahishta Seminar Series (AVSS, Phase II).

Our upcoming, and 3rd session will be of the Education Insight category. This will be an interactive lecture focused on a case study of the development of Black Worship (mostly focused on Christian congregations, although Islam will also be discussed). This should be particularly illuminating due to the many comparative lessons that may be drawn from Black Worship history, for a discussion con-

cerning Zoroastrian diasporic identity. Specifically, insights from Black History in regard to the building and sustaining of strong bodies of faith and fellowship.

This session will highlight one of the most remarkable instances of the transformative capacity of faith and fellowship, ever! We will seek to understand the processes of the following flowchart:

How an alien faith (Semitic/European Christianity)—Imposed through imperialism—Perpetrated and used as legitimacy for slavery—Could then be transformed—To inspire spiritual recovery and cultural empowerment—Fostering pan-Africanism and Black identity

Our 3rd session, therefore, seeks nothing less than perceiving lessons regarding the transformation of faith and fellowship in order to created Liberation Theology. Specifically, how to sustain Zoroastrian-ism as a lived faith guiding contemporary life, rather than a retrograde version of dogma constantly

responding to secular existence. …….Now, Can I Get a Witness?!

The 3rd Session of Phase II is being held at the OZCF:

Title - Faith and Fellowship Insights from Black History

Date - November 18, 2017
