combining aerials together to achieve great performance improvement is not new, it’s been done for many years. however, it has been quite a difficult and fiddly to get right. but Vision is about to take away the mystique with the launch of a stacking combiner for any pair of uhf aerials.

stacking aerials together is an inexpensive way of using two standard aerials to create the performance of a much larger aerial. this simple technique increases the gain and improves the directivity, great for optimising weak tV reception. the Vision “stealth” aerial is a great example of stacking. it consists of a pair of log-periodic aerials phased together to gain almost another 3dB in performance and make the array have a directivity of less than 7.5° either side of the boom.

so what is the benefit? more gain is obvious. distant transmitters can be pulled in where a normal array would not work. a tighter acceptance angle makes shutting out unwanted transmitters and frequencies very useful for reducing interference, especially in these time 4G-800 lte transmissions. an added benefit of a tighter acceptance angle is a reduction in reflected signals.

a standard V10-040 log super has an acceptance angle (half-power beamwidth)

of around ±20° either side of the boom. this means that if you swing the aerial ±20° away from the transmitter the signal will drop by about 3dB which, is half the power.

Compare this to a Vision stealth. effectively this is two V10-040 log supers mounted on a cross arm at an optimum distance. the acceptance angle is cut from ±20° to ±7.5° either side of the boom. so by doubling the array we can increase the gain by 3dB and reduce the acceptance angle which is exactly what most “high-gain” aerials are doing.

this technique has been incorporated into “X” design aerials. these are effectively two aerials on one boom with a full wave dipole across the double director chain. this is “stacking”.

the V24-212 stacking combiner allows the serious installer to “stack” two matched uhf tV aerials of any design together for improved results. don’t use a normal splitter combiner though, as that will put a 4dB loss into the combining. V24-212 is known as a “wilkinson’s” combiner and uses tuned transmission lines to combine the signals from the matched pair of aerials.

the cable lengths between each aerial and the combiner must be identical in length to ensure the signals will arrive from each aerial perfectly in phase with each other. if they are different lengths they will be slightly out-of-phase and may have a cancelling effect and reduce performance.

so how does it work? the signal coming from each aerial along matched lengths of cable (usually around 1 to 2m long) have an additive effect when combining, which means a doubling of the power. doubling the power, in theory, makes a 3dB increase but as with all things in life is not perfect. there will be some small losses in the cable, circuit-board and connectors so we could expect a quite useful addition of about 2.7dB over a single aerial. so a 2.7dB increase signal makes a 2.7dB improvement in the workable signal and an increase in the C/N ratio. so stacking aerials has two benefits. more signal and less interference. Now that’s worth having.

in May 2013 the uK began transmissions of 4g telephone services in the old channel 61-68 tV band, becoming known as 4g 800. to ensure consumers properly receive channels 21-60 and are protected from the disruptive 4g signals at 61 and above, conscientious manufacturers of tV aerials and amplifiers will have to redesign all of their models and launch them before the switch on in May 2013.

around 25% of homes rely on tV from transmitters using channels 57 to 60 and these in particular will need some form of filter to protect their tV reception. in other areas, it is likely that strong 4G signals will overload masthead and distribution amplifiers and they too will need protection from the high levels of 4G to preserve the dtt signals.

everyone everywherefrom the end of June 2013 all tV transmitters on channel 61 and 62 will

be moved down the band below channel 60. so the “new” wideband will be from channels 21 to 60. if you are using a transmitter with its highest tV channel below channel 60 already, then a new 4G-800 tuned aerial should be used immediately to minimise the risk of interference.

there is little point installing a tV aerial you know will do nothing to help the consumer. indeed, wideband (21-68) yaGi aerials have more gain at higher frequencies that are now the domain of 4G - and will be the worst type of aerial to install.

beware of foreignersyou also need to be aware that many european products were not designed for the uK. in many european countries, they have deliberately (and wisely) not used tV channels above 57, making filter design far simpler and cheaper to produce. for example in scandinavia they do not transmit tV on channel 58, 59 & 60 and many manufacturers put a channel 57

filter into the aerial junction box.if you used this product in the uK, they would not work properly if you are on the dover, oxford, winter hill or waltham main transmitters and dozens of fill-in stations which transmit right up to channel 60. the problem is, they all claim to filter 4G lte, and so make sure you read the details carefully!

built for the uK Vision is the first manufacturer to launch uK Ch21-60 tuned aerials to reject 4G signals. this ensures the aerial installers are now able to install the correct aerial today - and will help keep you off “rogue traders”.

the new Vision V10-32lf and V10-48lf are two new “high gain” yagi aerials with tuning for channels Ch21-60 and have the added benefit of built-in filters on the balun PCB for best performance.

levels have been increased typically by some 13dB. therefore the need for high gain is not the most important parameter required. however, higher gain aerials are generally more directional as directivity is a function of forward gain.

with so many cell-phone masts likely to be converted to carry 4G signals, the directivity of the tV aerial is likely to be very important. Being able to rotate the aerial a few degrees away from the direction of the tV transmitter may reduce the wanted signal by a few dB. this could also move the unwanted 4G signals into the aerial “null” where it has little or no gain so it can significantly reduce or completely remove interfering signals. to do this you need a well tuned and constructed aerial which is why Vision has paid particular attention to aerial directivity and side-lobe performance on the new Vision V10-32lf and V10-48lf. Both incorporate a junction-box channel 60 filter for extra performance.

VISION32LFthe traditional Vision 32 element aerial is one of the best selling aerial models. to replace such a popular product, we needed to design an even better aerial. the compact V10-32lf has only a little less gain than its bigger brother and surprisingly small side-lobes for an aerial of its size.

the V10-32lf also has a tight +/-12.5dB acceptance angle either side of the boom at 790mhz. where wind load is a consideration V10-32lf is an ideal choice due to its wire elements and small profile yet performance is not a compromise.

V10-32lf Gain: Note how the 7 - 9.5dB gain rolls off at 790mhz to an incredible -30dB at 862mhz

VISION48LFthe new VisioN V10-48lf is a 48 element yaGi design with superb directivity, minimal side lobes and high performance uK 4G lte filtering.

it replaces the very popular wideband 48 element aerial that has been installed throughout the uK in large numbers.

directivity is important: note how the V10-48lf has a “tight” polar diagram and few side-lobes making it excellent at rejecting unwanted signals

4g is coming

The interest in multi-dwelling satellite TV systems has been growing rapidly since the 1990s and the “IRS” - combined VHF radio, UHF TV and satellite systems (named Integrated reception systems by Astra) has dominated the installation market for a decade or more. The leading brand in the UK is the Vision V5 series, approaching 3 million points installed in the UK to date.

The most popular 5 wire system, VISION V5, was launched in 2004 and has been making reliable IRS installation easier for the installer for the last 9 years. It’s been so reliable and feature packed, its design has hardly changed in all this time.

However, the recent advances in low power and low noise semiconductors, combined with the demands facing TV systems with the introduction of 4G in the summer of 2013, mean the time is right to update V5. Although the new models look very different to the original, the core benefits of V5 remain. So it’s not a V5 mark 2, or a V5 plus, it’s an evolution of the species. So we named it V5 EVO.

The secret of the success. The secret in the success of V5 is in the quality of the initial concept. By moving the amplification away from the headend and into the multiswitch meant that signal levels on the trunk cables are kept to a minimum. Keeping the trunk levels low means you don’t need expensive, power hungry amplifiers at the headend and several repeater amplifiers all the way down the trunk. Less amplification means lower current, less heat, less to go wrong, leading to greater efficiency and reliability.

VISION V5 was always a low current / energy design and the clever way that the headend only powered the terrestrial amplifier in the multiswitches meant that large systems could be

powered from a single 2A power supply. So V5 was the first cascadable system that could have as many as twenty five, 32-way multiswitches – 800 points -powered from a single power supply. The satellite amplifiers in the multiswitches are only powered by a satellite receiver when it is connected. This saves power and makes the system more environmentally acceptable. No-one had done this before.

V5 was also ground breaking in that the gain across each bank of outputs was stepped by 2dB to compensate for differing subscriber cable lengths from riser to apartment. This makes it easier to balance the system and allows long and short

subscriber cables to be connected to the same multiswitch.

Does 4G matter? The new 4G LTE mobile phone service is soon to be a reality, transmitting much of its high speed data around 800MHz, right next to the UHF TV band. It was initially believed that only areas with TV reception in the high channels 56 – 60 would be disturbed by its noisy new neighbours, but further tests have shown that there are other factors that may cause a 4G transmission to disrupt DTT and possibly satellite TV too. LTE is transmitted at very high powers in some regions, and when it gets into the terrestrial amplifiers of an IRS or communal system,

even Group a signals could be corrupted. this is because the terrestrial amplifiers become overloaded. if the tV transmitter uses channel 60 then the problems may be greater and even tighter filtering may be required.

so irs products need to be redesigned with careful thought and the result is the new VisioN V5 eVo.

will old V5 mix with new V5 eVo? V5 eVo is of course backward compatible with the old version there is a direct replacement for each model of V5. the layout of the output connectors is the same with earth bars being the same pitch

as the previous models. uniquely we fit our bars during manufacture and 100% test all V5 products with the earth bars in place, so there is no degradation in performance and reliability with the bars connected. unlike most others on the market, it is manufactured in the eu, in a static free Nitrogen filled environment, negating the need for corrosive chemicals and fluxes. this has helped make V5 the most reliable irs system in the market and is also the birthplace of V5 eVo.

so what’s new?the first improvement was the addition of high performance filters to attenuate the signal damaging 4G interference – so

the new terrestrial tV band now covers channels 21- 60 with sharp filtering from 5 to 790mhz, not 862mhz as in the old models. so the terrestrial input on all amplifiers and multiswitches now only accepts the newly truncated band.

as lte interference is likely to grow in the coming years we had to look at the screening of the sensitive electronics. typically an irs system is used in tower blocks in urban areas where the 4G could be strong and picked up at high levels getting into amplifiers, taps, splitters and multiswitches the thicker the metal between the electronics and the unwanted signal the more chance we have of rejecting the interference. so to improve

4G

screening even further, we redesigned the housings using zinc-alloy diecastings which are strong and dense and very stable. it also gave us the opportunity to reduce the height of the product, so it can be installed in even smaller locations.

with a new PCB layout, we also looked at the latest semiconductors gaining the advantages of higher output capability and even lower power consumption. this means that V5 eVo multiswitches can take higher input levels from the trunk without overload, still power those long subscriber cables and yet use less power.

a new V5 eVo only draws 60ma from the trunk cable compared to 80ma before (a 25% saving) and the new multiswitches also only draw 65ma from a satellite receiver compared to 160ma previously (a massive 60% saving), so they are ready to accommodate sky’s new low current receiver designs which will have reduced lNB power. if your product draws less current, not only are you helping to save the planet but less current means less heat, making V5 eVo even more reliable.

long service life is also dependent upon long life components, particularly user adjustable items. we have replaced the expensive dual ganged variable level controls with switched attenuators. this makes it easy to see the level of

attenuation, so if you upgrade a 24 way switch with a 32 way, you can quickly dial up the same attenuator settings. switchable attenuators won’t change in value over time, so you can be sure what you set on installation will still be there in years to come. this same improvement has been added to our V5 eVo launch/repeater amplifiers, also adding switchable signal/cable slope controls on all inputs, both terrestrial and satellite making system commissioning faster and easier.

although the physical design has not changed over the years, we have listened to our customers. they have made suggestions that could be incorporated in the new models. for example, the input connectors to the switches were quite close together. this combined with the end cap design, meant that it can be quite fiddly to connect or remove an f connector. so new V5 eVo has a wider spacing on the input connectors and the end caps are now removed, so cable attachment is much easier and faster. to make sure you can plug an old V5 into a new V5 eVo, we have a simple adaptor that plugs a V5 into a V5 eVo or vice versa.

Now the end caps have gone, we had the opportunity

to re-designed the fixing method, so any V5 eVo component can be attached or removed from a back board by loosening the fixing screws, not having to completely remove them. it’s a small change, but a welcome improvement.

does better mean more expensive? No. the good news is that despite all the improvements in performance, reliability, filtering and convenience, the new Vision V5 eVo is the same price as its predecessor. so Vision V5 continues to lead the market with innovation, value and performance. when compared to other systems the Vision switches seem to cost a little more, but when comparing systems with all the necessary amplifiers, power supplies and install time, Vision V5 eVo is the most economic solution.

want to know more?the new Vision V5 eVo can be seen at leading wholesalers throughout the uK. Product training, technical support and system planning services are provided by Vision throughout the year, at venues around the uK. in most cases, these are provided free of charge to the installation

with 4g arriving throughout the uK at present and rolling out over the next couple of years, the high power 4g signals at the top end of the tV band will certainly interfere with some viewing of freeview / dtt. installers will want to ensure their installations are protected from this reception problem and a low cost, quick-to-install filter is the answer.

there are a range of filters coming onto the market, many are simple low spec filters that may have little effect, and others are well designed products with minimal insertion loss and significant 4G attenuation. Choosing the right product that works properly is essential and help is available from the organisation that is responsible for minimising 4G tV interference - at800.

these folks have developed a strict specification for channel 59 and channel 60 filters, and only the

very best performers will carry the official at800 accreditation. VisioN is proud to be amongst a small number of approved filter manufacturers to achieve this prestigious mark, for the channel 59 “V25-259”.

housed in an indoor diecast zinc alloy housing this high quality filter will attenuate 4G interference by a minimum 16dB at 791mhz and more than 40dB at 821mhz, the edge of the downlink frequencies. of course the insertion loss for the wanted channels has been kept as low as possible at a maximum 4dB in Ch59

but typically only 1.5dB throughout the rest of the uhf band. this model comes supplied with ieC male and female connectors, a short flylead and a Velcro strip to make it easy to conceal behind a wall mounted flat panel tV.

it is expected that the new Vision V25-259 filter can solve 4G interference problems for about 90% of the country using tV transmitters up to Channel 59. the V25-259 is very competitively priced and is available through your usual aerial wholesaler.

one of the very best aerial designs for digital tV is also one of the oldest – the Log periodic. this design has been around for many decades. in the early days of uhf tV reception they proved very useful in giving equal signal levels on all channels and for fighting ghosted signals. the highly directive log-periodic aerial also has excellent front / back ratio which means it shuts out unwanted signals from behind.

in the digital tV age, this flatness proved a great help for collecting a diverse range of signals from tV transmitters. this aerial design is also inherently immune from all but the highest levels of impulse noise interference, produced from electrical switches, passing motor bikes and other “every day” sources.

the down side of log periodic aerials is that in today’s world, the new 4G lte mobile phone signals are also in the tV band, so standard log period aerials are a poor choice. what we ideally need is a log periodic design with a flat response for channels 21-60 and very poor reception of higher channels. this can be achieved by bolting an electronic filter on the side, but it would cost almost nothing if the aerial itself had this characteristic. we need to “chop off” the reception at the

higher 4G channels.this is where we introduce the new Vision V10-28l and V10-36l log-periodic aerials with patented “stub-tuning” that will attenuate the 4G signals from 791-862mhz. this is the first time anyone has been able to mass produce a log aerial that is also a 4G filter. in a live test in the west midlands, the 4G signal was shown to be reduced by 10dB when compared to a standard log aerial, giving a significant improvement in the protection from 4G interference.

although 10dB is not sufficient in many installations, when this 10dB rejection is added to the 35dB rejection of a simple electronic filter, the risk of interference is minimised by some 45dB or more making reliable reception possible in all but the most extreme conditions.

the Vision V10-28l and V10-36l aerials have all of the same benefits of traditional log-periodic aerials, such as high directivity, flat gain across the uhf tV band and excellent immunity to impulse noise.

one of the major benefits of the patented “stub-tuning” is that it is economic to manufacture and introduced no insertion loss - unlike electronic filters that suffer from a reduction in level of the wanted

channels of 2dB or more which might mean weakening an already poor tV signal. in the new Vision 4G log aerials, the tuning and filtering is created by the opposing “stub” elements mounted at the front the boom. these have a cancelling effect on the unwanted frequencies making the gain of the aerial drop away in a very controlled and precise manner.

these new VisioN log aerials still give the superb flatness of gain in-band. this means that like the old designs of log-periodic aerials each received tV channel will be received at a near equal level making balancing of matV and irs installations much easier.

when faced with interfering 4G signals it is important to know the direction of the 4G transmitter. By using a more directive aerial it is often possible to reduce the 4G interference by rotating the aerial slightly away from the wanted transmitter thus moving the 4G transmitter into the aerial “null”.

the Vision V10-28l log standard and V10-36l log super are priced competitively like other log-periodic aerials making them ideal for the new uhf digital tV band where it co-exists with 4G lte transmissions.

for decades the analogue tV transmissions in many areas of the uK required “help” from masthead amplifiers in order to receive a strong enough tV signal for good quality sound and vision. since the analogue signals were turned off and the digital power was increased, many areas no longer need a masthead amplifier for weak signal reception.

there are still a number of installations that benefit from amplifiers. in the past, an in-fill transmitter provided reception for those locations where main transmitters were compromised. this may be because of the “shadow” created by a large building; it may be geographical such as a valley or other feature masking the signal.

when only 5 tV channels were required, these in-fill transmitters provided an ideal solution. however, with digital tV came multi channel television and many of these in-fill transmitters are unable to cope. as a result, many only carry 3 of the 6 muXes and viewers are left unhappy with restricted viewing choice. the solution is as before. add a large aerial and masthead

amplifier. aim the aerial at the (now more powerful) main transmitter and in most cases, full channel choice becomes available.

to make this possible, it is essential to use an ultra-low noise masthead amplifier. if you don’t, it is very likely the consumer will suffer with unstable pictures and broken audio on some channels or in extreme cases, no tV reception at all. the VisioN Gold series of masthead products arrived more than 5 years ago. the design was revolutionary, with by far the lowest noise figures of any comparable product. these uK designed and manufactured products took the industry by storm.

the use of low power and low noise semiconductors, developed for the mobile phone industry, combined with multi compartmentalised screening and gold connectors produced a range of amplifiers that could receive crisp clear tV pictures where inferior products had failed. the most popular VisioN gold masthead amplifier is a one-input four-output model used like a

“da” to distribute signals to four rooms. the extra gain is required to overcome the additional cable losses rather than make up for very weak signals.

since then, other manufacturers have emulated the appearance and convenience features of the VisioN gold range, but none have come close the Vision gold’s outstanding rf performance. indeed, the design was so effective that it has remained unchanged for half a decade.

with the advent of the new 4G-800 lte mobile phone service operating at 800mhz, mastheads that boost 4G signals are likely to overload and cause more reception problems than they solve. so it’s time to re-design VisioN gold to make them resilient to 4G interference.

the demand for dtt/cofdM modulators continues to grow. only a year or so ago they were the size of large shoe box, needed a computer and a degree in electronics to set them up.

the Vision V40-1000 changed all that. and now Vision has made it even smaller. Now we have a simple modulator that can take a single standard definition a/V composite feed from a camera, dVd or a set-top-box and convert the signal into a dtt channel compatible with freeview digital tVs.

with no need for a computer or handset, the V40-1000 has an extremely simple front panel display where the output uhf channel, programme name and signal level can be set.

where size matters you won’t find a smaller modulator on the market at only 12cm x 13.5cm x 5cm the V40-1000 can be made to fit almost anywhere and gives perfect digital pictures on a digital tV.

V40-1000 is ideal in small hotels, sports centres and apartment blocks for adding security cameras to the digital systems and is now such

good value that it is ideal to replace those old analogue modulators in domestic systems. V40-1000 comes complete with a 12V power supply.

also new to the dtt modulator range is the new modular format V40-2000. this new model can take two standard definition a/V sources from set-top-boxes, cameras or dVd players and the like and modulate the two programmes into a single digital channel compatible with freeview receivers.

again Vision has innovated with simple front panel oled display and software to make set-up a doddle. No computers or hand sets are needed! V40-2000 can be mounted on a diN rail, bulkhead, in a cabinet or directly to a headend board.

V40-2000 is designed in a modular format so that several can be linked together to create a professional headend system with loop through for combining the outputs into a network.

these great value dtt/Cofdm modulators are available now from your local favourite aerial and satellite wholesaler.

analysis has shown that 75% of the country receives their dtt between channels 21 and 56. so Vision has launched a new range of “gold” models for these channels including 13dB, 27dB, 2-way 20dB and 4-way 20dB gain models. they have integrated 4G filters that block signals above channel 56. this provides an extremely effective product range with huge attenuation of 4G transmissions. they are great value for money too.

however, this approach is not helpful to

the 25% of the uK that have some tV channels between 57 and 60. for these areas a dual strategy works best. these products have both 4G filtering and high energy amplifiers that are able to withstand much higher signals without overload. even 4G channels adjacent to channel 60 will be properly amplified without overload. these high energy models provide amplification of the weak dtt signal before filtering and can cope with 109dBµV maximum output, more than enough headroom for almost any installation.

the new VisioN gold range provides a complete solution. the balance of low noise, wide choice of gain and applications, flat response, unrivalled performance and reliability will maintain Vision as the uKs leading masthead amplifier brand. when combined with the new VisioN 4G aerials, installers are assured of superb results for their customers in locations previously thought impossible.

The Vision “high energy” Gold series comes in 13dB 1in 1out and a 20dB 4-way.

attenuators are often taken for granted as a standard tool in the installer’s box. few people check to see if attenuators are what they say they are. if you are fitting an attenuator to control the level of signal going into an amplifier, attenuating the signal by a fixed value, it is very important that the attenuator stays at that value for the life of the system.

most coaxial attenuators are poorly designed. often they use sprung brass to contact the outer earthed body which changes with time, moisture and oxidation of the contact face and therefore changes the value of the attenuator.

also there is a tendency to allow the weight of the connecting coaxial cable to pull on the attenuator and strain the amplifier input / output connector. this can damage the amplifier or multiswitch and make for unreliable attenuation or signal level setting.

Now with Vision V60-1xx system attenuators this problem is avoided. firstly they are housed in a fully screened diecast housing which can be screwed to the headend mounting board for stability. Because the V60 attenuators are built on printed circuit boards they offer reliable performance over the life of the system. mounting them to the headend board takes the strain off any coaxial cables.

Vision V60-1xx attenuators come in 4 values, 3dB, 6dB, 10dB and 18dB. they are fixed value with f female connectors and will not change over time making them ideal for long term installation.

V6—1xx attenuators pass terrestrial and satellite frequencies up to 2150mhz and dC making them suitable for both matV and irs installation.

FORWARDVISION

Vision has always dedicated itself to supply products that are simple to understand and reliable. we even print the basic specification on the front of the product label with details such as gain, maximum input and frequency response. however if the installer does not understand the basic technology behind the product he is not in an ideal position to make the right choices when selecting a model for a job.

this is where Vision has excelled. since its launch in 2001 Vision has prided itself on the training courses organised across the country. these one day sessions go into the basics behind the topic giving installers detailed background as to why certain product

features are desirable and others not so.of course all delegates have differing levels of knowledge about a particular subject and some may be new to the industry while others are old hands. But we try to structure the courses so we can balance the level of information without patronising the old hands and not allowing the course to go “over the heads” of the newer delegates.

in the past we have run training sessions on irs design installation and fault-finding, system planning, single channel filters and signal equalisation and recently 4G-800 interference.

Currently Vision is running courses on 4G-800 lte interference solutions for at800 /

dmsl the body responsible for mitigating 4G interference. Vision has trained more than a thousand installers in the techniques needed to remove interference from tV reception.

our most attended course over recent years has been on V5/irs where we have trained more than three thousand installers

Normally our courses are free of charge and can accommodate around fifteen delegates at a time. we don’t like too many more than fifteen as it becomes more difficult to interact effectively with larger audiences.

if you need training you can contact us at [email protected] , via our website or through your favourite wholesaler.
