Commercial Air Service Returns to Mason City

According to Airport Manager Pam Osgood, this airlinewillprovideexcellentaccesstolocaltravelers.“Weareextremelypleasedwiththis

announcementandarelookingforwardtoagreatworkingrelationshipwithAirChoiceOneforthenexttwoyears.”

Currently,AirChoiceOnehasEAScontractsinBurlingtonIA,DecaturIL,IronwoodMI,andJonesboro AR, and operates a second hub at St. Louis Lambert International Airport. Mason City’s commercialairservicewillbeprovidedbyaCessnaGrandCaravanfleet,atop-of-the-lineturbine-poweredaircraftwhichoffersplushleatherseatingandspaciouslegroom.

East State Street Project UpdateSeptember is a big month for the East State Street rehabilitation project. In addition to the Historic EgloffHouse,threehomesfromtheFEMAbuy-outprogramwillbemovedfromtheEastParkPlaceneighborhood to the 300 block of East State Street. Residents and drivers in the area can expect roadclosingsandshort-termpoweroutagesduringthemove,whichisexpectedtotakeacoupleofdays.

After utilities have been restored and repairs are completed, the three homes willbeofferedforsale.TheHistoricEgloffHousewillbeusedasahostelforcollegestudentswhoareinMasonCityonashort-term basis for medical school rotations, student teaching, internships, etc.

Iowa Wine & Beer sweepstakes features Mason City

The Iowa Beer and Wine Promotion Board, in partnership with the Iowa Tourism Office, recently featured Mason City as one of four Iowa destinations in their “Pick Your Sip” Giveaway. The sweepstakes showcased a variety of wineries, breweries and tourism experiences throughout Iowa. Communities highlighted in the prize packages included Council Bluffs, Cedar Rapids, Quad Cities and Mason City. Over 1,030 entries were received throughout the 10-day promotion.

Mason City featured as Road Trippin’ Destination Mason City was recently featured as a Midwest weekend getaway

destination by CBS affiliate station KGAN-TV in Cedar Rapids. Five segments were aired throughout the week of August 4th, highlighting various locations in Mason City including the Charles H. MacNider Art Museum, Frank Lloyd Wright Stockman House and Historic Park Inn, The Music Man attractions, Lime Creek Nature Center and Mason City Brewery. Other communities featured throughout the summer series included Milwaukee, Ames, Omaha, Kansas City, Madison, Clinton, Iowa City/Coralville, Burlington and Cedar Rapids.

The festival in historic downtown Mason City celebrates the spirit of an American era & commemorates the March 13, 1934 robbery of the First National Bank by John Dillinger.

Main Street Mason City honored their Volunteer of The Year & Business of The Year at their annual meeting held on August 28th.

Business of the Year- Mason City Brewing: Having only been open just days over a year and a half, Mason City Brewing has become a downtown landmark, attracting people from all over. They deserve credit for bringing people to our downtown and helping to make it as successful as it is today. Mason City Brewing offers several different craft beers. They

are located at 28 E. State St. and are open Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. MCB is owned & operated by Arian Schuessler, Justin Merritt & Jake Rajewsky.

Volunteer of the Year- Eric Levenhagen: Eric has been on the Main Street Mason City board since July 2013 and in that time has proven his dedication and belief in our community’s downtown district. He has assisted in taking our organization to the next level as Treasurer and is always trying to log the most volunteer hours. Eric is the only Certified Tax Coach in Iowa and is the author of the bestselling book, “Secrets of a Tax Free Life: Surprising Write-Off Strategies Most Business Owners Miss.” Eric is the founder and managing member of ProWise Tax & Accounting, LLC in Mason City, Iowa.

Blue Zones Project ®

To date, nearly 40 Chamber members have achieved designation as a Blue Zones Worksite®. Watch this column for their best practices.

North Iowa Area Community College

NIACC was Mason City’s first designated worksite and is a strong supporter of Blue Zones Project efforts. The college made these environmental changes:

• Added healthy vending machines

• Added a water bottle filling —station 19,309 uses so far this year!

• Organized Walking Moais®

• Offers employees monthly “mini” massages (7 min.) by a licensed masseuse.

• Offered the seven-week “Wellness on a Shoestring” program.

• Offered well-being sessions on meditation and creating a positive aura.

Shelly Schmit, VP-Institutional Effectiveness and Organizational Development, serves on the Blue Zones Worksite Committee and leads the BZ effort for the college.

She chose Mason City to open the 50th anniversary celebrationofherfavoritemoviemusicalentitled,“TheMusicMan—InConcert.”Theshowco-starsPatrickCassidyandfeaturesmemorable songs and dances from the Meredith Willson classic.

TicketsareavailableattheNIACCBoxOffice($45/$35)forthe7:30PMshowsonThursdayandFridayevenings.

FollowingtheperformancesinMasonCity,thetourwillmoveontoMinneapolisandotherMidwestcities.Ifreviewsandticketsalesarefavorable,theproductionwillembarkonanationaltour.

Leadership North Iowa (LNI)isaneducationalandinformational12-weekcourseheldatvariouslocationsinNorthIowa.Thisprogramisdesignedtoidentifyanddevelopfutureleadersinourcommunity. Participants learn leadership skills and examine the economic and social issues of our area and complete a service project.

The2014LNIClasschosetwoserviceprojects:helpingbuildaHabitat for Humanity home and organizing a bake sale to raise funds for the Mason City Noon Rotary’s Layettes for Nicaragua project.

LNI Participants present a check to the Mason City Noon Rotary for their Layettes for Nicaragua project. Donations totaled $1,254.
