Welcome to the 30th Annual Vision for America Award Dinner

Page 3: Vision for America Award Journal - 2015

Dear Friends and Supporters,

Welcome to Keep America Beautiful’s 2015 Vision for America Award dinner, our annual event recognizing distinguished leaders in corporate America and their commitment to create positive, lasting change in communities nationwide.

This year’s Vision for America Award honoree is Doug Oberhelman, Chairman and CEO of Caterpillar Inc., who is representing more than 100,000 Caterpillar employees around the world.

Celebrating its 90th anniversary, Caterpillar is the world’s largest manufacturer of heavy equipment. And it’s Caterpillar’s big machines—the ones kids look at with wonder in their eyes—that move and shape the earth to make communities more livable. After all, the road to sustainable progress often begins with a road.

Caterpillar has a robust corporate sustainability effort focused on preventing waste, reducing resource consumption, and developing better systems through innovation. Caterpillar’s 2020 goals for operations and product stewardship signal a dedication to “Making Sustainable Progress Possible,” which Doug Oberhelman calls a “cornerstone commitment” of the company.

Sustainability is fi rmly embedded as a core value at Caterpillar. Earlier today, in fact, Caterpillar hosted its fi rst major national summit focusing on the industry of natural infrastructure restoration as a complementary program to our Vision for America Award dinner. Read more about Caterpillar’s sustainability accomplishments on the following pages.

Keep America Beautiful and Caterpillar share a vision of a country—and a world—in which people’s basic needs are fulfi lled in an environmentally sustainable way and where every community is a clean, green and beautiful place to live.

We hope you enjoy tonight’s program and invite you to join us in our pursuit to end littering in America, increase recycling in America, and to beautify America’s communities. Thanks for your support.

Sincerely,

Jennifer M. JehnPresident & CEOKeep America Beautiful

Its mission is to enable economic growth through infrastructure and energy development, and to pro-vide solutions that support communities and protect the planet.

Caterpillar’s strategy is to provide work environments, products, services and solutions that make pro-ductive and efficient use of resources as it strives to achieve its vision.

Caterpillar applies innovation and technology to improve the sustainability performance of its prod-ucts, services, solutions and operations. The company believes sustainable progress is made possible by developing better systems that maximize life cycle benefits, while also minimizing the economic, social and environmental costs of ownership, as reflected in its sustainability principles.

Caterpillar’s GoalsCaterpillar will move toward achieving its vision by working to meet the aspirational sustainable development goals it has set for its own operations as well as the products, services and solutions it creates for its customers.

OUR IMPACT IS MULTIPLIED THROUGH STAKEHOLDER AND BRAND PARTNERSHIPSThrough Keep America Beautiful’s programs and pub-lic-private partnerships, we inspire people to take action that improves their communities. Our relationships with government agencies, national nonprofits and corporate sponsors, among others, help to multiply the impact of our actions.

GREAT AMERICAN CLEANUP IMPROVES OUR COMMUNITY ENVIRONMENTKeep America Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup (GAC), which enters its 18th year in 2016, engages more than 4 million volunteers and participants whose actions create positive change and lasting impact in communities across the country.

Keep America Beautiful and our national network of community-based affiliates and other participating organizations execute grassroots service projects grounded in the knowledge and needs of local com-munities. We work closely with governors, mayors, local government officials and civic leaders to ensure that we’re meeting the community’s local needs in a sustainable way.

Our volunteers spend millions of hours undertaking wide-ranging projects, including organized volun-teer events, employee engagement opportunities, and experiential environmental education initiatives.

Lowe’s Legacy ProjectThe NCAA, Lowe’s, and Keep Indianapolis Beautiful (KIB) partnered to restore a commu-nity center’s indoor basketball court used by PAL youth leagues; revitalized outdoor play-grounds; and beautified the JTV Hill Park facil-ity as part of the NCAA Legacy Restorations, presented by Lowe’s. More than 70 Lowe’s Heroes worked with KIB on the initiative. They also renewed the historic wall mural of John Thomas Vastine Hill, the first African-American admitted to the Indianapolis Bar Association.

Leaders Against LitterLouisiana Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne kicked off Louisiana’s Great American Cleanup with “Leaders Against Litter,” a statewide event hosted by Keep Louisiana Beautiful (KLB) in partnership with Volunteer Louisiana. Twen-ty-three KLB affiliates hosted litter cleanups and were joined by more than 600 community and business leaders, who pledged their sup-port of a litter-free Louisiana.

Dow Propel to Excel Nearly 200 volunteers from Dow’s Propel to Excel leadership program painted 480 protective wood bollards that line a bike trail in Houston’s historic First Ward neighborhood – the largest community art installation in city history. Volunteers then head-ed to Crockett Elementary to clean and beautify the school’s playground and other outdoor areas. Volunteers also assembled benches, performance platforms and art walls that will be used for events. During the Great American Cleanup, more than 1,000 Dow employees and their families and friends volunteered at more than 60 locations.

During the Great American Cleanup, our volunteers’ work returns, on average, nearly $180 million in measurable benefits across the participating communities.

“I WANT TO BE RECYCLED” CAMPAIGNKeep America Beautiful and the Ad Council launched the breakthrough Public Service Advertising (PSA) and awareness campaign – “I Want To Be Recycled” – in July 2013 to motivate Americans to make recycling a daily habit.

“I Want To Be Recycled” is the only national bilingual multimedia campaign that raises awareness about the benefits of recycling, while providing educational tools and resources about how to recycle more and recycle right.

The campaign artfully shows that recyclable materials – a bottle, can, shampoo bottle or other materials – can be given another life and become something new when someone chooses to recycle. Created by San Francisco-based ad agency Pereira & O’Dell, the campaign has generated more than $105 million in donated media.

The second phase of “I Want To Be Recycled,” supported by Unilever and launched in early 2015, en-courages the nearly half of Americans (45 percent) who do not consistently recycle their plastic personal care products found in the bathroom to do so.

Integrated CampaignThe Ad Council is distributing PSAs for TV (English/Spanish), radio, outdoor and digital media with a significant number of people engaging with the campaign on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Tumblr.

Educational ToolsThe campaign is focused on influencing people’s recycling behavior at work, at home and on the go. People can find educational information about recycling on our website (IWantToBeRecycled.org), including a search tool showing nearby recycling locations. The website provides other resources, in-cluding infographics that show the “journey” a recyclable product takes to become something new and an exciting “Super Sorter” game showing how a materials recovery facility works.

Community EngagementKeep America Beautiful and the Ad Council intentionally designed the PSAs in a format that is easy to localize with nearly 20 Keep America Beautiful affiliates “tagging” the PSAs with their logo. And the City of Austin and its Austin Resource Recovery are working closely with Keep Austin Beautiful to distribute localized campaign educational materials to schools and other civic organizations.

AMERICA RECYCLES DAY INFLUENCES RECYCLING BEHAVIORAmerica Recycles Day (ARD) is a Keep America Beautiful national initiative that takes place on and in the weeks leading up to Nov. 15. It is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the U.S. America Recycles Day celebrates the benefits of recycling and provides an educational platform that motivates people to take action to recycle more and recycle smarter – at work, at home and on the go.

Keep America Beautiful’s affiliates and partners recruit government entities, schools, businesses, faith-based organizations and others to participate through collection drives, demonstrations, collegiate tailgate events, facility tours, displays, proclamations, and other special events in celebration of ARD.

In 2014, more than 2,000 America Recycles Day events were registered, engaging more than 2 million participants nationwide. In addition, more than 200,000 people have taken the “I Will Recycle” Pledge online and on paper at ARD events.

OUR COMMUNITY IMPACT PROGRAMS EMPOWER CHANGEKeep America Beautiful corporate partners have funded significant community impact programs that provide our affiliates the means to multiply the impact of their efforts. Keep America Beautiful has provided more than 780 grants, totaling more than $5.5 million during 2014/2015.

RECYCLING: INSPIRING EDUCATION AND ACTIONKeep America Beautiful is focused on influencing people’s recycling behavior at home, at work and on the go by developing programs, campaigns and other resources that raise awareness and inspire action.

Recycling@WorkKeep America Beautiful’s “Recycling@Work” program is a national voluntary initiative challeng-ing businesses, government agencies, schools, hospitals and other institutions to commit to increase workplace recycling. By becoming a Pledge Partner, businesses and other organizations can gain access to special recycling bin discounts, free tools, and other resources. In 2015, Keep America Beautiful released the first phase of the “Recycling@Work” study, supported by PepsiCo Recycling and CBRE, which recommended that em-ployees be provided with a desk-side recycling bin with a smaller trash bin attached so as to increase recycling and reduce waste in the workplace.

SPONSORSAlcoa FoundationMicrosoftPepsiCo Recycling

Public Space RecyclingProviding access to recycling in shared commu-nity spaces reinforces recycling as a “full-time” activity. In an effort to further remove barriers to public space recycling, Keep America Beautiful provides technical knowledge and works with partners to make recycling more convenient by increasing the number of receptacles – 4,000 public space bins in 2014 alone. In addition, Keep America Beautiful is pursuing research to better understand how bin placement, colors, signage and other program design charac-teristics can reduce confusion and encourage recycling in away-from-home settings.

SPONSORSThe Coca-Cola FoundationDr Pepper Snapple Group

Recycle-BowlKeep America Beautiful recently launched the fifth annual Recycle-Bowl K-12 school-based recycling competition, which is supported by na-tional partner Recyclebank, and runs from Oct. 19 through Nov. 15, culminating on America Recycles Day. In 2014, almost 1,500 public and private schools around the country, representing nearly 900,000 students, teachers and adminis-trators, learned about waste reduction and envi-ronmental responsibility through Recycle-Bowl.

SPONSORRecyclebank

Lowe’s Community Partners GrantsLowe’s strengthened its partnership with Keep America Beautiful with a $1 million donation in 2015, which is supporting 50 local community service projects as well as Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup. Keep America Beautiful affiliates and partner organizations received nearly 245 Lowe’s grants the past three years. More than 1,000 Lowe’s Heroes participated alongside other volunteers, who together contributed nearly 196,000 volunteer hours. Through our partnership, nearly 1 million flowers and bulbs have been planted; more than 225 playgrounds/recreational areas have been restored; and more than 1,000 community gardens have been planted.

Waste Management Think Green® GrantsWaste Management awarded nearly 40 Think Green® Grants to Keep America Beautiful affiliates across the country in 2015. These merit-based grants support locally-implemented projects such as recycling and waste diversion education programs and other environmental initiatives. This is the ninth year of our community-based grant col-laboration. During this time, Waste Management and Keep America Beautiful have awarded more than $1.3 million in grant monies to affiliates and partners in support of more than 205 community service projects and programs.

UPS Community Tree and Recovery Tree Planting GrantsThe UPS Foundation provided more than 30 grants, totaling $160,000, to 2015 recipients of the UPS Community Tree and Recovery Tree Planting Grants, which is part of UPS’s Global Forestry Initiative. The UPS community tree grant program is intended to help sequester levels of carbon dioxide through strategic plantings; emphasize the importance of native tree planting; produce fruit from fruit trees for local consumption; and plant trees that will have a greater likelihood of withstanding nat-ural disasters in communities that have lost a significant number of trees because of a recent natural disaster.

LITTER: MORE THAN JUST A BLIGHTON OUR COMMUNITIES Littered environments place a heavy burden on our quality of life as well as property values. Keep America Beautiful’s educational efforts provide the tools and resources to guide people’s understand-ing and actions to end littering in America and reduce blight.

Cigarette Litter Prevention ProgramKeep America Beautiful’s Cigarette Litter Prevention Program (CLPP) relies on measurement tools to quantify success. Over the past 10 years, the CLPP has consistently cut cigarette butt litter by approx-imately half, based on local measurements taken in the first four months to six months after a program has been implemented. As participating communities continue to monitor the program, those reduc-tions are sustained or even increased over time. Keep America Beautiful has found that cigarette butt litter occurs most often at transition points—areas where a person must stop smoking before proceed-ing into another area such as bus stops, entrances to stores and public buildings, among others.

Blight Literature ReviewYears after Keep America Beautiful’s landmark 2009 “Litter in America” study, which focused on the sources, characterization and costs of litter, as well as the behavior of littering, we embarked on a new research effort centering on the issue of blight. A new national report — “Charting the Multiple Meanings of Blight” — provides a snapshot of how researchers, experts and practitioners describe and understand the complex conditions that create blight and the policy responses that communities are taking. With a better understanding of blight, Keep America Beautiful will develop new tools and resources — such as a “community blight calculator” — to better measure the scale, scope and impact of blight in communities nationwide.

BEAUTY IS OUR LASTING SIGNATUREEach year, Keep America Beautiful works with millions of volunteers in beautification and greening programs that impact more than 20,000 communities.

National Planting DayIn a strategic effort to increase planting of native species, Keep America Beautiful promotes National Planting Day, a fall initiative of the Great American Cleanup.

In collaboration with dozens of conservation and gardening organizations nationwide, Keep America Beautiful is also a founding member of the National Pollinator Garden Network and the Million Pollina-tor Garden Challenge.

CHANGING BEHAVIOR THROUGH EDUCATION PROGRAMSKeep America Beautiful’s formal and informal education programs empower generations of community stewards, teaching the essentials of environmental citizenship and preservation of our natural resourc-es. Our efforts are designed to move individuals along a path of behavior change through education, awareness, motivation and activation.

Waste in Place“Waste in Place,” Keep America Beautiful’s pre-K to 6th grade educational resource guide, includes more than 100 activities and enrichment materials covering topics such as litter prevention, recycling, source reduction, landfills, composting and waste-to-energy.

Youth Advisory CouncilKeep America Beautiful’s Youth Advisory Council provides a unique opportunity for 10 high school students from across the country to participate in a service-learning and leadership development program. The newly-selected members will implement local service projects as well as act as ambas-sadors for youth service in their respective communities. Goals for 2015-2016 include promoting Keep America Beautiful Schools, including tools to be litter-free, and developing a framework for extending Keep America Beautiful Youth Advisory Councils in local communities and on college campuses.
