    Vision 2020 Planning Retreat

    Friday, March 22, 2013

    Meeting Notes

    Mission of Vision 2020

    A social movement to address the underlying causes of poverty in the Greater East Los Angeles

    Community through building collaborations amongst all stakeholder groups.

    Proposed Vision Statement

    In 2020, East Los Angeles will significantly improve its social, economic and political influence

    resulting in greater educational opportunities, a thriving business environment and a safe and

    healthy community.

    Questions and suggestion raised in discussion:

    For whom Replace social and economic with socio economic? Need to develop a Values section to accompany the vision

    Next steps:

    Martin will review and revise statement. He will present proposed vision statement to group at

    next meeting. Also Martin will develop a Values section which will include value statements about

    some or all of the following:

    Immigration Poverty Diversity Safety Institutional Racism Family Strengths

    The following participants agreed to lead the discussion in each of the four areas:

    Three Year Goal Development Exercise for 2016

    Health Care

    1. Create an integrated network of care through the Eastside Health Alliance to improve accessto services

    2. Every school will have monthly access to wellness services and education for childrenand families*

    3. Access to healthcare providers for undocumented families through advocacy and outreachEducation

    1. To increase access to Early Childhood Education opportunities by 10%.*2. To promote and support 3rd grade level reading, writing and math.3. Promote retention in high school.4.

    To increase college graduation rates through supportive resources5. To offer support for the continuation of Adult Education

    Economic and Workforce Development

    1. To create strategic partnerships with businesses and educational institutions inorder to promote student internships.*

    2. To help small businesses to expand, remodel or re-construct.3. To have training for current and aspiring entrepreneurs to build and grow businesses (i.e.

    one target population could be immigrants).

    Civic Engagement

    1. To increase voter registration and participation for 2016 elections by 25%2. Promote and support immigration reform and path to legal status by providing

    resources including education and financial*

    3. Provide town hall opportunities on civic engagement4. Raise awareness about importance of civic engagement and provide opportunities for

    participation.

    Next steps: Team Leaders will convene their group prior to next meeting to begin one year

    action plan for their goal. Each team should begin asset mapping as it relates to their goal.

    Group Structure Discussion

    1. Basic MOU should be developed2. A tiered level of financial commitment should be proposed3. Who has voting privileges should be determined4. Who will be lead fiscal agent5. Come to agreement on geographic boundaries - it was suggested to serve unincorporated

    East Los Angeles.

    Next steps: Ritchie will develop a proposal for consideration and discussion at the nextmeeting. Map to be brought to next meeting to look at boundaries and determine who the

    group should be serving.
