First Editorial

Title: Delayed start (The IPL remains a big draw, but it should not put public health at risk)

Context: The Indian Premier League

(IPL) marches to a beat of its own. It may

lack the enduring international appeal of

the World Cup, the Ashes or tussles

featuring India and Pakistan, yet for a

domestic cricket league that blends the

local with the global, the IPL has

commercial heft and guarantees annual

thrills.

Since its launch on an April night at

Bengaluru in 2008, the league gained

traction and also suffered controversies.

The 2013 spot-fixing crisis forced a

cleansing exercise within the Board of

Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) but the

tournament continued unhindered.

With India still grappling with coronavirus,

the UAE stepped in and the IPL will be held

there from September 19 to November 10,

subject to the central government’s

approval, now deemed a formality.

Once the league’s governing council

mentioned over the weekend that Vivo, the

cellphone company with Chinese roots,

will continue to be the title sponsor, all hell

broke loose.

For now both Vivo and the BCCI have

blinked, a separation is certain, and the

hunt for a lead sponsor is on. If commerce

is one headache to be dealt with, the bigger

migraine is the absolute importance that

has to be given to conducting the

tournament in bio-secure bubbles at

Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.

Final Words:

West Asia with its Indian diaspora has its

distractions and the IPL officials have to

ensure that while cricket prospers on the

turf, the larger picture of health is not

ignored. The virus remains a threat, and

the thirst for profit should not override

public health concerns.

Title: Beirut battered (Blast worsens Lebanon’s situation as it

fights political, economic, and health

emergencies)

Context: The devastating blast in

central Beirut on Tuesday that killed 135

people and wounded 4,000 has once again

turned the spotlight on a city that had in

the past survived civil wars, sectarian

violence, foreign interventions and

terrorist attacks.

While there is no dearth of conspiracy

theories, the initial assessment of the

government is that the blast was caused

by the detonation of more than 2,700

tonnes of ammonium nitrate that had

been stored in a warehouse at the Beirut

port after it was confiscated from a cargo

ship six years ago.

The magnitude of the blast and the level of

the destruction it caused in one of the

busiest areas of the capital city suggest

that the casualties could be higher.

Beirut’s health-care system, struggling to

fight the COVID-19 pandemic, is already

stretched. Coping with the aftermath of

the blast itself would be an uphill task for

the country’s beleaguered government.

The blast could not have come at a worse

time for Lebanon. In recent years, it has

been battling with one crisis or another —

be it political instability, a crumbling

economy or the pandemic. Massive street

protests that broke out in Beirut and

elsewhere last year against corruption

and the government’s inability to provide

even basic services to citizens, paralysed

governance further, leading to Prime

Minister Saad Hariri’s resignation.

The new government’s immediate priority

was to fix the economy. But the economy

is still in free fall. Prices of essential goods

are high, foreign currency is scarce and

the GDP is expected to contract 12% this

year, according to the International

Monetary Fund.

Final Words:

All stakeholders, from the Sunni parties to

Shia Hezbollah, should work together.

Other countries in the region as well as

international institutions should offer help

to Beirut to withstand this moment of

catastrophe.
