Editorial:

Hey there from the new Spotlight team, and welcome to the first of the three main issue of the year. This is going to be a very interesting, and very different issue. We hope you enjoy it!

As someone who has not really done much yet for the Spotlight, but loves writing, this is an amazing opportunity. I hope that we, as a team, can manage it.

There is so much that we want to do with the magazine, and we have started with this edition. Although we considered moving away from themed issues, this edition did eventually have one: Desserts. However, we did not limit ourselves to it, and wrote a collection of articles that were not within the scope of the theme. We have tried to cover a broad spread of topics and managed everything from sports to Model United Nations, with a few recipes sprinkled in here and there. Hopefully these new non-thematic sections will become more regular- with reports on school sport, school events, big debates of the time, and reviews on the media.

Please do feel free to tell us what you think of this edition, and what you would like to see in upcoming editions.

Thank you, and enjoy the magazine!

The Spotlight Team.

When I tell people that I am a vegetarian people always ask ŵĞƚŚĞƐĂŵĞƋƵĞƐƟŽŶǁŚLJ/always wonder whether they actually care or if they are just asking to show some polite interest in what they consider an impossible lifestyle. However, strange as this may seem, this is not the real reason I am a vegetarian. Of course the memory of this scene made me abstain from meat for the re-mainder of the holiday but the real value of that experience is that it triggered an explosive interest into the meat industry and the way in which farming has developed in recent years. Tasty Stuffed Pumpkin

(a Christmas alternative)

-1 medium/large onion, chopped-2-3 cloves garlic, crushed-1 t. fresh rubbed sage-1 t. thyme-Olive oil-1 c. coarsely-crumbled whole grain bread* -or--1 c. cooked whole grain rice -100 gr. mushrooms, sliced (optional)-1 stalk celery, chopped-1 small apple, chopped-Juice from 1/2 lemon

Preheat oven to 180 C or 350 F.

Saute onion, garlic, celery, mushrooms until nearly done. Add everything else once you have chopped them (except bread crumbs and cheese), remembering to stir constantly, over low heat until onions are clear and the celery is tender. Stir in breadcrumbs/rice and mix well. Remove from heat. Allow to cool until you can safely handle it.

Stu! the pumpkin. Top with cheese, then the pumpkin lid. Cover the whole bit and bake until the pumpkin is tender enough to eat. (For faster eats, pre-cook the pumpkin upside down on an oil sheet before stu"ng.)

Serve with cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and vegetarian gravy, and your favorite green veggies.

*If the bread crumbs are very dry and stale, soak them a few minutes in a small amount of veggie broth. I usually use rice, though.

-Anna Rosa Juurlink

-Handful of walnuts, chopped-Small handful of sun#ower seeds-Small handful raisins-1/2 c. (125 gr) grated cheese (gruyere, bergkäse or cheddar are $ne)-1 Whole pumpkin - like Hokkaido - hollowed out. Keep the lid.

‘Across the Universe’!e dining room of Vienna International School is not generally the "rst place you would expect students to be spending their precious Saturdays, however, it is not uncommon these days to hear the loud laughter of the “Across the Universe” cast on their lunch break on any given Saturday.

What is immediately striking as you walk into the lunchroom is the sheer size of the group. So what has attracted so many of VIS’ students to join “Across the Universe”, the famous Beatles musical? Many of the students say that it was the variety of talents that are needed in a musical that brought them to audition. Not only have the students inter-ested in acting joined the production but also those interested in dance, instrumental music, singing, technical and backstage work. Another attraction was the students’ love of the Beatles music upon which the music of this production is based. For others again it was the desire to experience some-thing new and have the opportunity to interact with new people that drew them in. !e musical was originally written and directed by Julie Taymor (widely known for directing the stage musical of !e Lion King) and focuses on the romance between a poor Liverpudlian artist and an upper class American girl in the 1960s. !e entire piece is set to the backdrop of the Vietnam War and deals with some of the societal and historical issues of the time. When asked about her decision to stage a production of this musical at VIS, Ms. MacInnes, the director, said that she had always wanted to do a music-theater piece that was still a challenging text piece, and that she found both these qualities in “Across the Universe”. Once she had decided this was the piece to perform, she had spent most of her summer writing out the scripts and adapting parts of it to be more “educationally sound” as well as to include a Greek-style Chorus that comments on parts of the play.

“Across the Universe” is really a school-wide col-laboration between Secondary students of all ages (ranging from grades 6 – 12) and both Primary and Secondary teachers.

!e musical presents an opportunity for students to try out drama and dance, meet new people, become more immersed in their interests, collab-orate with others and get to see the o#en hidden talents of their peers. !e band also provides a way to interact with other students in a new and cre-ative way. Ms. MacRitchie, the musical director, has commented that the rock band and the orchestra have both managed to bring together students from across the school - some of whom have never had the experience of playing along side others before. She also commented that the production has been a great way for students to get out from under their shells and become more con"dent in what they do.

Students and teachers have both been involved in the production alongside their school subjects, however, it has also become a project within class-rooms. Grade 10 art students have provided works for the musical and history and chemistry and physics teachers have come in to talk to the cast about their respective subjects in order to help them with the cultural context. Ms. MacInnes said the musical “facilitates a meaningful creative pro-cess of students with adults and that the music of the Beatles is both inspirational and moving. She also added that “despite having sung Beatles songs until we’re blue in the face, they never get stale!”

ObesityCake is awesome. This much is not debatable. But do not forget that all-ap-plying principle that all things should be taken in moderation. In the particu-lar case of cake, if we have too much of it, there is the imminent danger of obesity.

Did you know that a slice of your average Sacher Torte contains 441 calories? Well now that you do think twice before ordering one. 441 calories is the equivalent of the energy spent in a little over 2 hours of fast jogging. I would like to inform you that fortunately, most of the calories gained will be used up by dai-ly bodily functions and you will not have to worry much for a single portion of Sacher Torte. However, for the back-to-back diges-tions of three portions of Sacher Torte, you will KLÄUP[LS` NHPU ^LPNO[ HUK PM `V\ THRL P[ Hhabit, you will become obese.

Obesity is an issue of global concern. In 2008 it was recorded that more than 500 million adults were obese. This statistic is more than an over-whelming double from the worldwide obesity rates in 1980. Obesity is a major risk factor for diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, both of which are conditions that may result in death. come a greater danger to people of all backgrounds and especially to the VIS community. The United States is a prime example of a state under the looming threat of obesity. Most recent statistics record that 30% of the US population is obese. The US, it can be agreed, is the home of fast food dining and provid-ed with this premise, we can conclude that the cause of the United States’ problem is indeed fast food dining.

We, the VIS community, should be especially aware of our diets because our school is located a minute’s walk from a

shopping complex containing all of the most prominent fast food chains in the world. We have the money and we are young. For these reasons, we’re particularly targeted by greedy cake makers and fast-food restaurants and if we’re also careless, we’ll be falling right into their traps. Obesity is determined by a unit of measurement called body mass index (BMI). Body mass index essentially, much like your ordinary weight scale, determines your weight but with the added con-sideration of height, metabolism, age and gender. It then scales this in its own unit called BMI and JH[LNVYPaLZKPɈLYLU[YHUNLZVM)40\UKLYVILZLL_[YLTLS`VILZLV]LY^LPNO[\UKLY^LPNO[VYhealthy. Do not let this scare you. All it requires is a little care and a little determination from you to keep yourselves as healthy as possible. The goodness of health is hard to realize when you have nev-er experienced any severe maladies but hopefully, the lethal potentials of obesity mentioned earlier have put things into perspective for you. You don’t want to be obese. Good news is that the measures you have to take to avoid obesity are easy. You just have to be conscious of your diet, i.e. always be aware of how many calories there are in the food you regularly eat, and do sports. Now it is hard for me to specify how many calories per day would be a healthy consumption. The healthy amount a person will have to consume to avoid obesity is dependent on gender, age, metabolism and even height. However, the following chart, although excluding several factors TLU[PVULKHIV]L[OH[JV\SKWV[LU[PHSS`HɈLJ[[OLrecommended amount of calories, gives a quite accurate illustration of how many calories you should consume per day.Enjoy cake in moderation and live a happy life. - Gerum Gashaw

!is conference was a life changing experience for me, and this is no overstatement. It truly took me out of my comfort zone in almost everything. Before MUN, the only community I was ex-posed to was the VIS community, and coming into contact with MUN has meant that I have had to drastically alter my expectations of myself.

!e people I met at Prague were, however, so compet-itive and capable that even my new expectations had to be again, rede"ned. I now know from my MUN experiences that my goals will have to be raised substantially if I am really going to achieve as much as I want to in life. !e people I met at the MUN have truly motivated me to work harder and be better in all aspects of life.

Besides being a source of motivation, however, the experience of meeting new people from all over the world was also fabulous. It was very odd for me to see that even though I go

to an international school and interact with people from a diverse communi-ty, the people I met at the conference were all so dif-ferent and unique. !e VIS community has developed and is now dominated by a unique “VIS culture” that unites people from very di#erent backgrounds. Of course, the people I met there were completely unfamiliar with this cul-ture so I had to use only my own essential character to socialize with these people. Other people had to do the exact same and thus, every interaction I had at the con-ference was very genuine.

One of the brightest highlights of this trip were, as you might have guessed, staying at a 5 star hotel and of course, Prague itself. I do not even know where to start with describing Prague. !e entrancing walks we had around the cobblestone tiled back alleys of Prague, the beautifully adorned gothic castles towering over the quarters and the awesome panoramic view of the Prague sky-

line from my hotel room on the 11th $oor of the Corinthia hotel that I woke up to every morning; these were all sights and sounds that I will NEVER forget.

!e Corinthia hotel had genuine luxury. As could be expected from a 5 star hotel, the services they provided were highly convenient. My one regret would be not having visited the reputed spa in the hotel. My recommendation would be that you really make the best of all the facilities provided at your MUN hotel; it’s not every day that you get to stay at a 5 star hotel.

5 Minutes with Anne Fine

I have loved “Diary of a Killer Cat” since I was 5, it was a book that I would make my parents read to me again and again. Anne Fine came to talk to my English class about the importance of editing, and tips and tricks for writing well.

The MUN Experience...Well, I’ve been in Model Unit-ed Nations since G10, and to all of those G10s trying out, or getting in, welcome, and good luck! That is the same to all of you in the other grades wait-ing to join in coming years. MUN is a lot of work, and you need to know that, but it is totally worth it, and an ab-solutely amazing experience.

There is so much that you can get out of MUN, as long as you are willing to put in extra time and effort to get this experience. I’ll start with a bit of advice, then talk a bit about the conferences, and what skills you stand to gain from all of this.

6RÀUVWRIDOOZKHWKHU\RXplan to join in the coming years, are trying out, or have just gotten in, there are a few things that you need to know about MUN. It is a lot of work- you have to write resolutions, position papers, keep up with current affairs globally, and be able to talk publicly with, if not ease, at least a certain degree of com-fort. And let’s not forget about the debates! Thinking on your feet is a skill that you must have. This is really important for debates, as it is impossible to predict what your oppo-nent will say, and you cannot really prepare much before-hand, other than really know-ing the facts of the matter that will be discussed. So here is some advice for all

of you- watch the news reg-ularly, read newspapers, the Economist, and any world QHZVWKDW\RXFDQÀQGRQOLQHDo your preparations for the upcoming conference as early as possible, and go over it as often as possible, revising it with updates of current events, and using references to past resolutions, treatises, and laws to make your idea as real-world as possible, and as solid as it can possibly be. You VKRXOGGHÀQLWHO\DOVRSUDFWLFHspeaking in public- whether it be speaking up in class a bit more than you would usual-ly in response to questions, or talking to people that you do not know: anything that you can do to increase your comfort with talking to peo-ple who you are not well-ac-quainted with.As for the conferences- the ÀUVWFRQIHUHQFH\RXJRWRZLOObe a more typical European MUN, where you will be rep-resenting a nation in a certain committee, such as Economic Social, or Environment.

You will have set topics to debate and prepare for ahead

of time, and any resolutions you write you will have to lobby, possibly merge with another nation, and get signatures in order to have it debated. Another tip would be to make your resolution as detailed and effective as possible- generalizations generally repel people, as they then have to question the details of how the action will be taken. Don’t be shy to speak up and ask questions as soon as you get there- the sooner you get past the ini-tial nervousness of speaking in front of a lot of people, the easier it gets, and the more fun you’ll have!

Well, I hope that this will encourage to be willing to work and to devote your-selves to MUN and to give it a go, and that you really understand how much you get back of what you put in. Speaking as someone who has been to two conferences, I really can say that it is to-tally worth it.

Page 17: VIS Spotlight Student Magazine - Desserts

The second conference you go to may or may not be Prague- ask Mr. Malone about this; the conference destinations may be subject WRFKDQJHEXWLWZLOOGHÀ-nitely be totally different WKDWWKHÀUVWFRQIHUHQFH<RXcan read more about Prague in the other MUN article.

Finally, what do you get out of MUN? In one word KHDSV<RXEXLOGSXEOLFspeaking skills and self-con-ÀGHQFHJDLQDPD]LQJinsight as to how to effectively research and use other ideas to build up your own on top of those, as well as working on your eloquence and writing skills, and skills of persuasion and communication.

And all this just scratches the surface. A few more things that you learn are how to effectively display your ideas and argue in IDYRUIRUWKHPDQDO\]Hother ideas as to their worth, sort through information to get what you need, as well as being able to get your point across clearly and effectively.

As you may have noticed, all of these skills are not only applicable for MUN conferences, or for future potential careers in politics. They will also help with school work in the short-term, for the IB Diploma and eventually in applying to universities and the work that you do when you get

WKHUHDQGÀQDOO\LQVHFXU-ing a job. There are so many IDUUHDFKLQJEHQHÀWVRIVNLOOVlearnt in MUN that it is worth every iota of energy and effort that you put in, as what you get out of it is dependent on what you put in.

Charlie writes to a friend about his daily life highlighting important thoughts and emotions he has. The book begins each chapter with a new letter, whereas the movie completely cuts this out.
