The Challenges of Data Growth
According to IDC (#1142, June 2011), over the next 10 years, the amount of information managed by enterprise data centers will grow by a staggering 50 times! This explosive growth in data can result in a number of data protection challenges within the enterprise:
• How do you protect growing amounts of data with a limited or shrinking backup window?
• How do you ensure applications can be recovered in a timely manner?
• How do you efficiently protect an increasing number of large and smaller objects?
• How do you meet long term retention requirements?
Server Virtualization a Key Contributor to Data Growth
Over the last several years server virtualization technologies have gained in popularity for several economic reasons, however it is a key contributor to the rise in data growth within the enterprise. A consequence of virtualization related data growth is the complexity related to protecting a virtual server environment. This is primarily due to lack of available physical server resources.

SOLUTION PROFILE 3
Traditional Data Protection Solutions deploy resource-intensive backup agents in the physical server, which copy and move data from production storage to a back-end disk or tape environment. This worked well for physical environments with limited storage capacity but is not sufficient for a virtualized environment with high utilization rates. As such, a modern data protection strategy is necessary.
Comprehensive Approach to Data Protection To solve these problems, Hitachi Data Systems has developed a 3-pronged approach for data protection.
1. Reduce the Volume of Data Copied for Protection
2. Storage-Enabled Protection
Moving inactive unstructured data, the amount of data that needs to be protected can be reduced significantly, the following can be achieved: 1) Reduction in time spent to back up data. 2) Reduction in backup infrastructure. 3) Reclamation of expensive tier 1 storage.
Hitachi Data Systems offers the Hitachi Content Platform (HCP) as centralized archive, backup-free storage and cloud tier that is ideal for storing inactive but important data over long periods of time.
1) Self-healing architecture (when deployed in pairs) means organizations can eliminate backup for data stored in HCP.
2) High-density (up to 40PB) and high- efficiency allowing organizations to support large amounts of data while reducing cost through compression and single instancing.
3) Multi-tenancy to support different departments, internal or external customers (e.g. cloud).
4) Specifically designed for long-term retention with support for “one-click migration”.
5) Tight integration with archiving software from independent software vendors (ISV).

Hitachi Data Protection Suite (HDPS) and Hitachi Application Protector (HAPRO) snapshot management solutions can complement or replace existing backup processes. It automates recovery of objects, applications and databases, and link snapshots to backup processes. Highlights include: 1) Deep-application integration with Oracle, SAP, IBM DB2, Microsoft SQL, Microsoft Exchange, etc.
2) VMware server virtualization support.
3) Create 1024 copies (total of 32k copies within HDS storage) to service operational recovery needs when used with Hitachi Thin Image (HTI).
4) Granular recovery of objects (e.g. emails, databases, virtual machines).
5) Zero scripting and full back up lifecycle automation across snapshot, disk, tape and cloud.
6) Supports HDS and 3rd-party storage.

SOLUTION PROFILE 3
Storage enabled protection based snapshot augmenting or replacing traditional backup methods.
When dealing with mission-critical systems requiring minimal data loss, low application impact, reduced backup and network load, a change in paradigm is necessary.
HDS Continuous Data Protection (CDP) solution changes the dynamics of data protection and goes beyond scheduled batch backups by automating real-time data protection, including continuous data protection (CDP), live backup (which combines the techniques of CDP with the long-term retention options of traditional batch backup), and mirrored data paths. Utilizing intelligent agents and object-oriented (OO) repositories, incremental forever strategies can be deployed without the additional overhead of having to reconstruct a full backup image during restore.
Hitachi Data Instance Manager (HDIM) is a unified, easy-to-use, policy and workflow driven data protection solution for File, Microsoft SQL, Microsoft Exchange and Linux mid-tier environments. It unifies backup, data protection, replication, archive, de-duplication and data security in a single solution with top-down policy management. Based on continuous data protection, it captures only “changed bytes” minimizing data loss up to the last minute. It allows organizations to employ an “incremental forever” strategy without
the overhead of reconstructing a full backup which allows for quick restoration if required.
Designed for small and medium-sized enterprises, HDIM helps customers meet mission-critical application service levels characterized by low RPO and RTO requirements both locally and remotely. Another use case is to reduce technical resource, network and backup infrastructure costs as enterprises consolidate data (e.g. databases) that they have in remote offices.
1) Network resilient agents and minimize bandwidth requirements. 2) Reduce remote office backup infrastructure and manual operation. 3) Central policy management based on business-aligned metrics.

Summary
Data Protection is currently synonymous with backup, and organizations are finding it difficult to meet their data protection objectives. This problem is getting worse due to explosive growth in data (especially unstructured) and the adoption of server virtualization. Hitachi Data Systems recommends the following 3-pronged data protection strategy that weaves together technologies, such as archive, content store, replication, snapshots and backups.
• Archiving inactive data to a content store that has built-in data protection
• Augment data protection with application-aware storage based snapshots
• Paradigm shift using CDP based technologies to protect data continuously and apply incremental forever strategies
