This year science week will be a little different. Ouroriginal idea was for the Science Ambassadors tocreate and present science experiments to the restof the school. We have now opened this up to anyonewho would like to participate at home. Theseexperiments can be chemistry, physics, biology (PE) oran eco project.

Finding an Idea for Your Science Fair Project

One of the most important considerations in picking a topic for your science fair project is to find a subject that you consider interesting.

We know that finding a topic is the hardest part of a science fair project, and sometimes you just need a little help focusing on what sorts of topics would be of interest to you. I have put together some ideas on the following slides to help. Also you can use some websites that might help:• Science Buddies has developed the Topic Selection Wizard and has a library of projects by subject.• IPL : https://www.ipl.org/div/projectguide/gettingstarted.html• Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.co.uk• Education: https://www.education.com/science-fair/

If you are coming up with your own topic, or have a topic idea from somewhere else, be sure to look at our list of Science Fair Topics to Avoid. Steering clear of these will ensure you have a high-quality science fair project that is easier to complete!

Teacher Tool BoxYour Science Fair Project Question

Once you have chosen a topic of interest, you will need to create a related scientific question. Without a good question, your whole science fair project will be much harder, if not impossible! It is important to select a question that is going to be interesting to work on for and that is specific enough to allow you to find the answer with a simple experiment or research. A scientific question usually starts with: How, What, When, Who, Which, Why, or Where.

Here are some examples of the winners from the Brentwood Science show back in October. We do not need you to go into this much detail in the 2 week time frame that you have. These are just some ideas for you.

•Does the colour of food or drinks affect whether or not we like them? (Taste testing – recording data )•Where are the most germs in your home? (Bread experiment) •Why do we recycle?•Which paper towel brand is the strongest?•Can background noise levels affect how well we concentrate? (Testing of adults and children?)•What type of food allow mould to grow the fastest?•How can dirty water be filtrated to make clean water?•Can plants grow in pots if they are sideways or upside down?•Does the colour of hair affect how much static electricity it can carry? (test with balloons)•Which fizzy drink decays fallen out teeth the most? (Boiled egg experiment)•What is the Arctic ecosystem? •How much sugar in ‘healthy drinks’?•Does the colour of birdseed affect how much birds will eat it?•Does age affect human reaction times?•How does exercise affect heart rate? (good if you can track data over a longer time frame.)•Can you make an eco system in a plastic bottle•What type of vegetables conduct electricity? •What does adding salt do to the temperature of boiling water?•Which vegetable seeds grow faster?•Does the size or material of the sports ball affect its bouncing height?•Which protein bars give the most amount of energy?

Here are some ideas for your science fair projects:

I am happy for you to create any type of science project. You will need to research this and make sureit is suitable in the time frame and in the amount of resources it may need. It would be great to see arange of different types of experiments so maybe something different to a volcano or slime? Howinventive can you be using things you already have at home?

There are a range of different ways that you can present your science fair entries. Here are some examples of how you could hand this in. Please remember this is a virtual science fair so please do not bring entries to school.

How to present your science fair projects:

A short video explaining the experiment and the results.

A display poster (like the American science fairs)

A short PowerPoint showing your experiment from introduction to conclusion.

Remember it doesn’t have to be an experiment if you have a topic that you have questions about. You could make a display answering some of the questions you have using secondary sources e.g. books or Internet.

These are just some ideas, please feel free to be creative with your own presentation style!

Woodside Academy’s science week for this year is 18th – 22nd May. Please can you have all entries in by 22nd May so that we can collate all of the entries and pick some winners. We will have a range of prizes on offer. Remember to include your name and class on your entry.

Categories for winning may include:Originality (can you make your experiment/research different everyone else?)Scientific vocabulary (can you include scientific words and know what they mean?)Scientific conclusions (can you say what happened – even if it went wrong - and why this happened?)Key stage prizes

We will decide these winning categories when we look at all of the entries submitted. We are looking for a range of different things.

Please send these to [email protected] or to your teacher who willpass this on to me.

We hope that you have lots of fun with your project and learn lots of new things!

Be creative, have fun and stay safe!
