VIRTUAL CPE & VIRTUAL ROUTER
VNF DEVELOPMENT
THE CLIENT
The client is a growing European operator who
wanted to help their customers stay ahead of the
curve by being a driving force for innovation and
adoption of new technology.
ALTEN Calsoft Labs delivered the Virtual CPE and
the Virtual Router VNFs to the client who has been
very innovative and disruptive in delivering optical
connectivity, data center services and OTT services
in the region.
OVERVIEW
THE CHALLENGE
The client wanted ALTEN Calsoft Labs to develop
Virtual CPE and Virtual Router VNFs for residential
services. The key challenges of the project were:

THE SOLUTION
CASE STUDY
www.altencalsoftlabs.com
The client was planning to launch new
residential services in their market
Build a futuristic solution that can address
residential market in the initial phases and
enterprise market in the later phases
The client was looking for a partner who had a
base framework to quickly deliver customized
VNFs, who can build scalable solutions in terms
of features/performance and having prior
experience in delivering customized NFV & SDN
solutions
ALTEN Calsoft Labs Virtual CPE VNF enabled the operator to offer their customers residential services.
The operator could replace their complex and expensive Layer 3 CPEs with simple low-cost Layer 2 CPE
devices and the Layer 3 CPE functions were provided by the residential Virtual CPE on the operator
cloud.

Virtual Router VNF enabled the operator to build sophisticated, multi-tier networks within the
virtualized environments and support adding, configuring and moving network services on-demand.
Virtual Router VNF handled the routing to CDNs and other local services supporting OSPF over IPv4 and
scaled out to utilize equal-cost multi-path routing (ECMP) on the edge router towards the x86 cluster, to
achieve redundancy and scalability.
Some of the key features of the ALTEN Calsoft Labs solution included:
Replacing complex and expensive Layer 3 CPEs with simple low-cost Layer 2 CPE devices
Run on off-the-shelf Intel Xeon E5-2600 servers on Linux
Dynamic provisioning/de-provisioning of residential services
Layer 2 visibility to client devices allowing OTT services to be delivered to a specific end user
High availability through instance remediation
Significantly lower CapEx and OpEx
